"content": "Greg,\nIt is the Amateur Radio Service. It does have 5 purposes as quoted in Part\n97.1\n\nIf you buy supplies and work on something you enjoy doing it is called a\nhobby. \n\nIf you do it to establish a business we call it work. \n\nWe are Amateurs because we receive no compensation for our efforts, not\nbecause we are unprofessional.\n\nSo where is the conflict?\n\nPoliticians are famous for finding the facts to support their conclusions. \n\nI prefer to have all of the cards on the table.\n\nArt,\nKC6QUH\n\n-----Original Message-----\nFrom: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On\nBehalf Of Gregg Wonderly\nSent: Sunday, October 23, 2011 5:42 PM\nTo: Kevin Deane\nCc: [email protected]\nSubject: [amsat-bb] Re: This Is a HOBBY people\n\n97.1 Basis and purpose.-\n\nThe rules and regulations in this Part are designed to provide an amateur\nradio \nservice having a fundamental purpose as expressed in the following\nprinciples:\n\n(a) Recognition and enhancement of the value of the amateur service to the \npublic as a voluntary noncommercial communication service, particularly with\n\nrespect to providing emergency communications.\n\n(b) Continuation and extension of the amateur's proven ability to contribute\nto \nthe advancement of the radio art.\n\n(c) Encouragement and improvement of the amateur service through rules which\n\nprovide for advancing skills in both the communications and technical phases\nof \nthe art.\n\n(d) Expansion of the existing reservoir within the amateur radio service of \ntrained operators, technicians, and electronics experts.\n\n(e) Continuation and extension of the amateur's unique ability to enhance \ninternational goodwill.\n\nNone of these items say \"this is a hobby\" nor do they allude to \"just having\n\nfun.\" I am not trying to say that its just serious in nature, but there is\na \nconsiderable amount of personal responsibility and focused effort implied by\nthe \nabove points. Think seriously about the phrase \"This is a HOBBY people.\"\nIt's \nnot \"just\" a hobby, although there are many things that you might do with \nAmateur Radio that don't focus on the above points. The above points are\nthe \n\"reason\" why the FCC lets you have a license and allows us to use the \nfrequencies. If we don't focus on fulfilling the responsibilities and\ncharter \nof these points with some effort, we are just riding on the heals of the\nhard \nwork of others, who do, in fact, have these things at the forefront of their\n\nefforts to do good things with Amateur Radio.\n\nWe need to have discussions and we need to focus on the things that do have \nmeaning related to the 5 points above.\n\nGregg Wonderly\nW5GGW\n\nOn 10/23/2011 3:33 PM, Kevin Deane wrote:\n>\n> As much as I enjoy the banter, animosity and sometimes really brilliant\nposts, I want to remind everyone that this is a HOBBY!\n>\n> Amateur Radio.\n>\n> Shut up and have fun, some of you take this WAY TO SERIOUSLY.\n>\n> Kevin\n> KF7MYK\n>\n>\n> \t\t \t \t\t\n> _______________________________________________\n> Sent via [email protected].
