"content": "Mike,\n\nSpace stations get peppered with meteoroids hundreds of time a day. The\ndesign issues have long been worked out (Think Salyut in the early '70's).\nIn the case of the ISS, the habitable area is small compared to the whole of\nthe structure and a lot of that structure shields the habitable areas. In\naddition the habitable areas are covered with insulation to deal with\nthermal control. This is essentially layered Mylar with insulating material\nbetween the layers. In addition to thermal control, these layers also absorb\nthe meteoroid impacts and dissipate their energy. \n\nDuring expected peaks in activity such as last night the station can be\noriented to present the least amount of habitable area to the on coming\nstream. \n\nNeedless to say there is more to it, but that's the basic idea.\n\nClear Skies\n\nRick Tejera\nEditor SACnews,\nPublic Outreach Coordinator\nSaguaro Astronomy Club\nPhoenix, Arizona\nwww.saguaroastro.org\[email protected] \nK7TEJ, AMSAT 38452\n\n\n-----Original Message-----\nFrom: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On\nBehalf Of Michael\nSent: Tuesday, December 14, 2010 13:51\nTo: [email protected]\nSubject: [amsat-bb] Re: Clint\n\nI wondered that on previous showers and NASA is quite relaxed about the\nsituation.
