Col. Brady Hauboldt, launch director. \"We've\nreally restored a national capability for heavy lift on the Western\nRange, something we have not had since the last of the Titan IV-Bs\nflew out of Vandenberg. This extends our ability to cost effectively\ndeliver payloads of all sizes and compliments.\"\n\nThe launch follows three years of preparations and $100 million in\nbase infrastructure upgrades at SLC-6. It makes Vandenberg unique in\nproviding the full spectrum of space lift capability delivering\npayloads of all sizes to orbit aboard the Minotaur through Delta II,\nAtlas V and now the Delta IV, said Hauboldt.\n\nWhile this is the first Delta IV HLV from Vandenberg, it will be the\nfifth in the program's history. The first launch occurred in January\n2004 from the East Coast.\n\nThe rocket will carry a national security payload for the NRO.\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------------\n\n LAUNCH VISIBILITY AND VIEWING\n\nThe Delta IV Heavy slated to lift-off from Vandenberg AFB on Thursday\nis a rocket enormous size and power. For observers in close proximity\nto the launch pad at south base, the launch should be impressive.\n\nHowever, for observers further away, the display will be more subdued\nbecause of the propellants the rocket uses and the time of day.\n\nThe Delta IV Heavy launch vehicle consists of three liquid oxygen and\nhydrogen fueled Delta IV rockets that are joined together. The vehicle\ndoes not use any solid fuel rocket motors.\n\nUnlike solid fuel rockets or liquid fuel rockets that use solid fuel\nstrap-on motors for extra thrust, vehicles that rely entirely on\nliquid propellants produce very little to no smoke trail. Such\nvehicles may create a contrail when they pass through an area of the\natmosphere called the contrail zone, but this only lasts several\nseconds.\n\nBurning solid rocket fuel produces a tremendous amount of light.\nBurning liquid rocket propellants, on the other hand, also produce\nlight, but the amount is much less and the flame is semi-transparent\nor clear.\n\nThe fact that the launch is scheduled for the early afternoon will\nfurther impact launch viewing. The Sun will be high above the horizon\nand the launch will occur against a bright sky background. This will\ngreatly reduce the maximum launch viewing distance.\n\nTaking the above factors into account, persons without prior knowledge\nof the launch may accidentally see it with the naked eye as far away\nas 25 miles. People who are specifically looking for the launch may be\nable to see it without optical assistance as far away as 50 miles.\n\nObservers using binoculars or a telescope could possibly see the\nlaunch as far away as 100 miles provided they look at the right area\nof the sky at the right time.\n\nPeople within 50 miles of the launch site or the Delta IV Heavy's\nflight path should be able to hear the launch. In outlying areas, the\nsound will probably arrive a few minutes after liftoff and consist of\na low frequency rumble.\n\nThe best place to view the launch will probably be near the south\nend of the base. The idea is to get as close to the launch site as\npossible while avoiding trespassing on government or private property\nand staying clear of any low clouds or fog.\n\nRegarding viewing areas, Vandenberg AFB Public Affairs recommends the\npublic go to Surf Beach to view the launch. But to hear the countdown\nnet they need to go to the Corral Road viewing location. Maps are\nlocated on the Vandenberg AFB Public Affairs Facebook page at:\n\n www.facebook.com/30thSpaceWing\n\nThe launch should be visible to the naked eye provided you are close\nenough. For better view, use binoculars (tripod mounted binoculars are\neven better). Perhaps the best instrument for viewing the launch is\nan astronomical telescope. Astronomical telescopes are especially well\nsuited for launch viewing and may provide an impressive view of the\nDelta IV Heavy in flight.\n\nRegardless of where you go to view the launch, park safely, be aware\nof traffic or any other hazards, and obey the instructions of\nmilitary and public safety personnel.\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------------\n\n LAUNCH AND COUNTDOWN STATUS\n\nFor launch and countdown status for the Delta IV Heavy/NRO launch,\nconsult the following sources:\n\n Web Sites with Countdown Status:\n\n www.spaceflightnow.com/delta/d352/status.html\n\n Webcasts:\n\n www.ulalaunch.com/index_webcast.html\n\n Satellite Feeds:\n\n Begin Transmission (bars and tone) - 12:15 P.M.\n Broadcast Start: 12:43 P.M.\n Launch Time: 1:08 P.M.\n Satellite: AMC 1\n Transponder: C9\n Band: C-band analog\n Orbital Position: 103 degrees W.\n Carrier: SES AMERICOM\n Bandwidth: 36 MHz\n Uplink Freq: 6105 MHz (Vertical) \n Downlink Freq: 3880 MHz (Horizontal)\n\n\n Twitter Updates: None announced\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------------\n\n LAUNCH ALERT WEB PAGE\n\nFor information about this newsletter, including how to:\n\n - Subscribe, unsubscribe, or change addresses\n\n - Make a donation\n\nPoint your browser to www.spacearchive.info/newsletter.htm\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nCopyright 2011, Brian Webb.
