Dayton Hamvention General\nChairman Jim Tiderman, N8IDS, agreed to feature the ARISS keepsake\ncoin by holding a special prize drawing immediately following the\nintroduction of the winners of the 2016 Dayton Hamvention national\nawards at 2 pm on Sunday.\n\nThe ARISS Team kicks off its 2016 fund-raising campaign at the\nDayton Hamvention to raise money for the very high cost of replacing\nits aging radio system on the ISS and to help defray the cost of\ncontinuing ARISS operations. This special Hamvention prize drawing is\nthe first step of the campaign.\n\nARISS International Chair Frank Bauer, KA3HDO, noted the importance\nof this fundraising campaign: \"ARISS is in need of critical upgrades\nof our on-orbit equipment. The radio system in the Columbus module\nis over 17 years old and underpowered. We need a 21st Century next\ngeneration solution. In\nthe United States, sponsors are the Radio Amateur Satellite\nCorporation (AMSAT), the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), and the\nNational Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The primary\ngoal of ARISS is to promote exploration of science, technology,\nengineering, and mathematics (STEM) topics by organizing scheduled\ncontacts via amateur radio between crew members aboard the ISS and\nstudents in classrooms or informal education venues. With the help\nof experienced amateur radio volunteers, ISS crews speak directly\nwith large audiences in a variety of public forums. Before and\nduring these radio contacts, students, teachers, parents, and\ncommunities learn about space, space technologies, and amateur radio.\nFor more information, go to: www.ariss.org, www.amsat.org , and\nwww.arrl.org .\n\nAlso, join us on Facebook: Amateur Radio on the International Space\nStation (ARISS) / Follow us on Twitter: ARISS_status\nContact:\nDavid Jordan, AA4KN\nARISS PR\[email protected]\n\n\n[ANS thanks ARISS and David AA4KN for the above information]\n\n\n---------------------------------------------------------------------\n\n\n/EX\n\nIn addition to regular membership, AMSAT offers membership in the\nPresident's Club.
