All through the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo \nand Space shuttle programs (most of the space shuttle program) there was \nnever additional or off pad lightning protection. The support structure was \nthe lightning rod and with many points of contact with the wet sandy soil \nnear the ocean. That part of Florida is the lightning capital of the world \nand they knew what protection was required. Now you have to ask yourself, \nafter 50 years of placing man and unmanned spacecraft into orbit, why the \nadditional lightning protection when we're cutting back on launches?\n\nOur manned program will be out of service for at least 10 years and unmanned \nwill only be a handful or just a bit more per year.\n\n\n\n73,\n\nJeff WB3JFS\n\n\n\n----- Original Message ----- \nFrom: \"Jeff Moore\" <[email protected]>\nTo: <[email protected]>\nSent: Friday, June 10, 2011 11:28 PM\nSubject: [amsat-bb] Re: Three towers at NASA launch site\n\n\n> Lightning protection!
