"content": "Mike,\n\n I find myself calling in the pile on HF on occasion (I'm working on\nhelping my HF signal this week). Getting through on satellite is much\neasier and faster. Back when we had AO-13 and AO-10 we also had AO-21 (FM\nBird). The FM bird was pretty much the same in those days. You are correct\nit is a lot like contesting. I actually enjoy the quick exchange format of\nthe FM birds. I really don't understand why other folks feel the need to\ncomplain about it-- if you like it join us -- if it's not your cup of tea,\nthere are many other facets of Ham radio available.\n\n73,\nJoe kk0sd\n\n-----Original Message-----\nFrom: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On\nBehalf Of Michael Schulz\nSent: Monday, October 03, 2011 9:59 AM\nTo: amsat-bb BBs\nSubject: [amsat-bb] Re: AO-51 pass at 22:06 UTC 2011-10-01\n\nHi,\n\nWhile I do agree with the below, one thing we should keep in mind though is\nthat there's a difference\nbetween a pile-up on HF and on an FM sat. Not everybody on the sat may be\nactually interested in\nworking that particular station so we also have to give those some room (in\nthat 10 minute pass). On \nHF the time it takes to work the pile-up is usually a lot longer than that.\n\nOne thing I'd be interested to explore though would be how many of the folks\nthat work the FM sats \nregularly actually do work DX on HF and often find themselves in a pile-up\ntrying to get through \nquick and clean. This is out of pure interest and may help make it easier\nfor some.\n\nThe other problem is that before the madness starts, there are always other\nstations already working\ncontacts before the \"rare grid\" station comes into the footprint. \n\nOf course the best solution would be to get on the linear birds, we all win\nthe lottery so that we can launch\nanother Phase III sat or two and it would'nt be a problem anymore. (Ok, ok\n.. just teasing).\n\n73 Mike K5TRI\n\nOn Oct 2, 2011, at 4:09 PM, James Duffey wrote:\n\n> Sebastion - Good points. They use their exchanges effectively.\n> \n> Anyone can improve their rate. Always use phonetics. If you get part of a\ncall give a report and get his call when he gives his report. It is easy to get overwhelmed, and that\nis OK, but don't let the pileup know. \n> \n> Fills take up a lot of time and anything you can do to minimize it with\ngood operating practices will improve rate. This procedure also satisfies\nthose, mostly weak signal ops, who want a valid QSO to consist of both\nstations copying both calls, a significant piece of information (grid\nsquare), and then confirming that the information has been exchanged. This\nis a valid point, although many, particularly on HF do not necessarily\nagree. \n> \n> CW simplifies things a bit, plus there are fewer calling. \n> \n> Of course the real problem is getting newcomers to move up to linear\nsatellites where multiple QSOs can be supported. - DUffey KK6MC \n> \n>> \n>> _______________________________________________\n>> Sent via [email protected].
