Our\ngoals are still the same, however, the dates for future\nprojects were taken out of the Vision Statement to reflect\nthe reality of the launch environment.\nThe new BOD met and elected a new slate of officers.\nTheir plates are quite full and they have a huge task in front\nof them . The Symposium had many interesting presentations\nincluding new ways to become satellite active. HEO and MEO were\ndiscussed.\nThe Banquet was well attended and a great presentation on the Hubble\nSpace Telescope by one of the actual \"keepers,\" Dan Shultz, gave inside\ninformation on real time happenings.\nThe next Symposium site has not been selected, however,\n2009 is our 40th anniversary so hopefully many of you\nwill attend! Thanks to the Atlanta gang for providing a\nwonderful adventure.\n\n[ANS thanks Dee, NB2F for the above information]\n\n/EX\n\n\nSB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-307.02\nNote from Owen Garriot\n\nAMSAT News Service Bulletin 307.02\n From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.\nOctober 26, 2008\nTo All RADIO AMATEURS\nBID: $ANS-307.02\n\nAll,\nI received the following e-mail today from Owen Garriott, W5LFL and\nwanted to share this with the Amateur Community. Please post this and\npass it to others in the amateur radio community, as appropriate.\n73, Frank H. Bauer, KA3HDO\nAMSAT-NA V.P. for Human Spaceflight Programs\nARISS International Chairman\n---------------------------------------------\nRichard, W5KWQ, landed in Kazakhstan on Friday, 24 October 2008 at about\n0936 local time and was met there by his father Owen, W5LFL. They became\nthe first American \"second generation\" father/son combination to have\nboth flown in space and the first cosmonaut/astronaut-trained pair in\nthe world. They returned to Star City near Moscow that afternoon for\nmedical evaluation and this is the first interview provided by Richard\nthe very next day. It is transcribed and delivered by Owen to the ham\ncommunity.\n\"On my recent flight I had the great opportunity to speak directly with\nand trade call signs with hundreds of hams around the globe. For me it\nwas a unexpected joy to find so many enthusiastic hams, who were so well\ninformed and interested in my activities in orbit. When I began my\ntransmissions with preplanned SSTV images including \"pirate messages\",\ntest patterns and family images, I did not know how they would be\nreceived. But it seemed that fellow hams really enjoyed seeing this\nbeginning to my time on the International Space Station (ISS).\nThroughout the bulk of my 10 days on the ISS I tried to be speaking by\nvoice or transmitting SSTV images whenever possible.\nAfter my first 100 or so QSOs, I understood how well \"networked\" the\nglobal ham community really is. I received specific reports back through\nMission Control-Moscow about technical aspects of my work and how the\ncommunity was enjoying the transmissions. This redoubled my enthusiasm\nto do quality work for the amateur radio legions around the world as I\nrealized how much it meant to those with whom I had the chance to talk.\nBy late in my flight I had contacted many hundreds of hams by voice and\nI have good records of these contacts. Finally I sent some \"Goodbye\"\nimages on my last day in space. I also contacted many hams that had\nlistened to or contacted my father from space 25 years ago. Some hams I\ncontacted 2 to 4 times on my flight.\nOn those last days I was very moved when sent many \"soft landing\"\nmessages from individuals and classrooms full of children as I passed\nby. The ham community has added greatly to my personal feelings of\nsuccess on my flight. I can only hope that you enjoyed it as much as I did.\nThanks so much and 73, Richard, W5KWQ\"\n\n\n\n[ANS thanks Frank, KA3HDO, for the above information]\n\n\n/EX\n\n\nSB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-307.03\nARISS Status - 27 October 2008\n\nAMSAT News Service Bulletin 307.03\n From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.\nNovember 02, 2008\n\nTo All RADIO AMATEURS\nBID: $ANS-307.03\n\nAmateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report\nOctober 27, 2008\n\n1.\tUpcoming School Contacts\n\nAn Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has\nbeen scheduled with Scuola Media Statale Donato Forlani in Conversano,\nItaly on Tuesday, October 28 at 09:37 UTC.
