The gatling gun is one option. I prefer\nsomething with no moving parts. It should be possible (not easy) to center\none engine on each side. That would be six engines. Once in orbit take the\ntime to stabilize the satellite along the first axis before firing the first\nengine to boost the orbit. Repeat the process up to 5 times. Wow - This is\nrocket science!\n\n73,\nJoe kk0sd\n\n-----Original Message-----\nFrom: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On\nBehalf Of Joe Leikhim\nSent: Tuesday, January 17, 2012 5:33 PM\nTo: Ken Ernandes\nCc: [email protected]\nSubject: [amsat-bb] Re: Model Rocket Booster Engine for Picosatellite\n\nI have developed the perfect solution;\n\nA gatling gun type canister for the rocket motors would solve all of \nyour objections per below:\n\nOn 1/17/2012 4:22 PM, Ken Ernandes wrote:\n> How would attitude be controlled so the thrust is in the correct\ndirection? Spin stabilization about the maximum moment off inertia axis is\nprobably the best choice. This would require a magnetic torquing system.\n\nYes just like other missions.\n> Another issue is the thrust needs to be directed through the spacecraft's\ncenter-of-mass or there will be stability problems. How would a cluster be\nfired individually with each, in turn, directed through the center of mass?\nThat's a complex design problem.\n\nA motorized canister with 6 to 8 motors aligned such that the active \nmotor is aligned through the COM. Picture a revolver or gatling gun.\n> One more issue is that when you carry multiple motors, the first must\naccelerate the mass of the unfired motors, so the early firing will be less\neffective. The mass of the spent casings will need to be accelerated buy\nthe subsequent motor firings.\n\nSpent casings would be ejected using the ejection charge normally used \nfor deploying a parachute. Just as with any fuel, the mass of the \nunfired fuel will create mass for the initial firings.\n> You do have some work to do before you have a practical solution.\n\nWork is done. Took about 4 minutes. There would of course be a lot of\nheat in the rocket casings that would need to be dissipated.\n>>\n>> -- \n>> Joe Leikhim\n>>\n>> Leikhim and Associates\n>> Communications Consultants\n>> Oviedo, Florida\n>>\n>> www.Leikhim.com\n>>\n>> [email protected]\n>>\n>> 407-982-0446\n>>\n>> Note to GMail Account users.
