The program provides\r\nlearning opportunities by connecting students to astronauts aboard\r\nthe International Space Station (ISS) through a partnership between\r\nNASA, the American Radio Relay League, the Radio Amateur Satellite\r\nCorporation and other Amateur Radio organizations and worldwide\r\nspace agencies. The program’s goal is to inspire students worldwide,\r\nto pursue interests and careers in science, technology, engineering\r\nand mathematics (STEM) through Amateur Radio.\r\n\r\nEducators overwhelmingly report that student participation in the\r\nARISS program inspires an interest in STEM subjects and in STEM\r\ncareers. Ninety-two percent of educators who have participated in\r\nthe program have indicated that ARISS provided ideas for encourag-\r\ning student exploration, discussion, and participation, and 78\r\npercent said that ARISS was effective in stimulating student\r\ninterest in STEM.\r\n\r\nARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers\r\nof participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed\r\neducation plan. Students can learn about satellite communications,\r\nwireless technology, science research conducted on the space\r\nstation, what it is like to work in space, radio science, and any\r\nrelated STEM subject. Students learn to use Amateur Radio to talk\r\ndirectly to an astronaut and ask their STEM-related questions.\r\nARISS will help educational organizations locate Amateur Radio\r\ngroups who can assist with equipment for this once-in-a-lifetime\r\nopportunity for students.\r\n\r\nThe proposal deadline for 2018 contacts is November 15, 2017.\r\n\r\nThe ARISS website has additional details on expectations, proposal\r\nguidelines, and the proposal form.
