"content": "Clayton,\nOne issue in using magnetometers for azimuth determination is the fact that\nthe sensitivity to bias and scale factor errors increases when crossed\ninstruments are used to measure the field. In a system I designed in the\npast we used a single axis magnetometer and rotated it to null out the\nreading. The angle to the magnetic field was measured by the angle of\nrotation required. The instrument was mounted on a ~ 1 ft. plastic shaft to\nisolate it from the rotation motor and other sources of error. You could\nmount the magnetometer on a simple stepper motor rotator and get better\nperformance as the expense of some complexity. But it might be a fun DIY\nproject. Another thing I could offer is I do have some software which\ncalculates the vector field at any location from the current geomagnetic\nfield model which is available on the internet. But you can do just about as\nwell with any current aeronautical chart.\n\nBTW - Thanks for our QSO of earlier today on AO-85.\n\nRegards,\nAl Watts - AF5VH\n\n-----Original Message-----\nFrom: AMSAT-BB [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Clayton\nW5PFG\nSent: Thursday, February 18, 2016 11:58 AM\nTo: AMSAT-BB <[email protected]>\nSubject: [amsat-bb] Remote sensor for antenna array orientation\n\nHas anyone ever mounted a mutli-axis accelerometer or a magnetic compass\nsensor to their antenna crossboom for making adjustments to point of aim?\n\nI'm currently using Hall Effect sensors but experiencing several degrees of\ndrift over a short period of a few days.\n\n73\nClayton\nW5PFG\n\n\n_______________________________________________\nSent via [email protected].
