For those not aware, 20 years ago,\nin November 1996, an international group interested in installing and\noperating a ham radio station on the ISS met at the NASA Johnson\nSpace Center in Houston and, per NASA's direction, formed an\ninternational working group called ARISS. And the\n White House wants to give them a helping hand. It's launching an\n initiative that will foster small satellites with the resources\n they need to flourish.\n\n To start, NASA is not only proposing as much as $30 million toward\n purchasing data from these tiny vessels, but creating a Small\n Spacecraft Virtual Institute that will offer know-how to\n organizations.\n\n A more direct effort has the National Geospatial-Intelligence\n Agency awarding Planet a $20 million contract for a fleet of small\n satellites that can capture images of \"at least\" 85 percent of the\n planet every 15 days.\n\n Read the full story at\n http://tinyurl.com/ANS304-WhiteHouse\n\n [ANS thanks Stephen, G7VFY via Southgate ARN for the above\n information]\n\n+ Achieving Science with CubeSats Available for Free Download\n\n \"Achieving Science with CubeSats; Thinking Inside the Box\" by\n Committee on Achieving Science Goals with CubeSats; Space Studies\n Board; Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences; National\n Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, ios available for\n download as a PDF.\n\n Space-based observations have transformed our understanding of\n Earth, its environment, the solar system and the universe at large.\n During past decades, driven by increasingly advanced science\n questions, space observatories have become more sophisticated and\n more complex, with costs often growing to billions of dollars.\n Although these kinds of ever-more-sophisticated missions will\n continue into the future, small satellites, ranging in mass between\n 500 kg to 0.1 kg, are gaining momentum as an additional means to\n address targeted science questions in a rapid, and possibly more\n affordable, manner.
