"content": "I have been around tornados, and their aftermath. The devastation can be\ncomplete, but the area devastated is very small (a narrow strip). An\nenormous tornado is a mile wide... All of the infrastructure two miles away\nis generally completely intact. Once the overload subsides, your cell phone\nwill work just fine in the worst part of the destruction. Land line phones\na mile or so away will all work. Handhelds and VHF/UHF mobiles are handy.\nThere generally isn't need for much else.\n\nHurricanes are a completely different story.\n\n73,\nJoe\n\n-----Original Message-----\nFrom: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On\nBehalf Of Bill Acito\nSent: Wednesday, May 22, 2013 8:11 PM\nTo: Stefan Wagener; i8cvs\nCc: Amsat - BBs\nSubject: [amsat-bb] Re: Amateur Satellites and the emergency on tornadoin\nOklahoma and Texas\n\nYep, I was going to raise the same point and link. They list the following\n\"benefits\":\n\n- providing Satellite based Amateur Radio \n\t\t\t\t\t\tServices/meet \n\t\t\t\t\t\tthe long felt need for the\nAmateur Radio Operators of \n\t\t\t\t\t\tSouth Asian region\n(especially a mode B bird)\n- bring Satellite \n\t\t\t\t\t\tServices within the reach of\nthe common man and \n\t\t\t\t\t\tpopularize Space Technology\namong the masses.\n- stimulation of technical interest and \n\t\t\t\t\t\tawareness among the younger\ngeneration by providing them \n\t\t\t\t\t\twith an opportunity to\ndevelop their technological \n\t\t\t\t\t\tprojects\n- providing a low \n\t\t\t\t\t\tcost readily accessible\nreliable means of communication \n\t\t\t\t\t\tduring emergencies and\ncalamities like flood, \n\t\t\t\t\t\tearthquakes, etc.\n\nI never said the last one is a \"falsehood\". I am suggesting it does not hold\nanywhere near the same weight as the first three.\n\nI have never been in a tornado. But I would suggest that those hams in the\nimpact zone no longer have access to any working equipment, which means hams\nin the surrounding areas are coming in to help, and have the choice. If I\nwas going into the impact zone and had the choice of what communications I\nmight bring, it would be \n- a portable cell site\n- mobile/HT VHF/UHF\n- mobile HF\n...in that order. A portable satellite station would be a distant fourth.\n\nIf you read the summaries in the aftermath of Joplin, amateur radio\n(VHF/UHF) played a critical role in the minutes leading up to, and the hours\nafter the tornado tore through. Then mobile phone, mobile date, and social\nmedia took over when the mobile cell sites came on line. \n\n\nBack to prepping my FD station,\n\nBill W1PA\n \t\t \t \t\t \n_______________________________________________\nSent via [email protected].
