After several days of unsuccessful\nattempts, the success of this pass was largely\nattributed to NORAD obtaining a fresh set of Keps for\nRAFT's degrading orbit just before the pass started.\nThe epoch of the elset was less than 3 hours, so our\npointing was much more accurate than in previous low\nEL passes. \n\nI threw together a simple website with the audio\nrecording files and audio spectrum analysis of the\ntransponder tone from the successful pass. The site\nalso has tips and tricks for operators who want to\nhelp record the transmission within the footprint: \n\nhttp://ucisat.eng.uci.edu/RAFT.php\n\nAccording to Bob Bruninga (WB4APR), the audio\nrecording on the website is in fact the transponder\npicking up the ground radar signal. However, he\npointed out that we did not catch the narrow beam of\nthe radar which would have sounded like a bird chirp\nin the middle of an open FM carrier. He believes this\ncould be because RAFT may have been too far west of\nthe radar station and only catching side lobes, or\nbecause the transponder was activated a bit too early\n(difficult to tell due to a last minute configuration\nchange at our station to accommodate the new elset).\n\nBecause of this uncertainty, we absolutely need\nadditional operators within the eastern and western\npass footprints to help record the transponder audio!!\nFor the next couple of days, two command stations will\nactivate the transponder just before the radar fence\npenetration on the eastern and western passes around\n0400 and 0530 UTC respectively. These times are MUCH\nearlier than they were at the beginning of last week\nbecause of the orbit decay (no longer 2-4 AM). Plus,\nall you have to do is record the audio! If you're\ninterested, a procedure for recording stations willing\nto volunteer on the website above. For specific info\non RAFT and its mission/operations, please see their\nwebsite at\nhttp://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/craft/save-raft.html\n\nPlease feel free reply with questions if you're\ninterested in helping with the recording in the next\nfew days and one of us will get back to you. Thanks\nagain to all for your reports and support throughout\nthis week!\n\n73,\n\nMatt Bennett\nKF6RTB \n\n\n \n____________________________________________________________________________________Sick sense of humor?
