ANS reports on the activities of a \nworldwide group of Amateur Radio operators who share an active interest in \ndesigning, building, launching and communicating through analog and \ndigital Amateur Radio satellites.\n\nPlease send any amateur satellite news or reports to:\n\[email protected]\n\nIn this edition:\n* ARISSat Status\n* UO-11 Report\n* STRAIGHT KEY NIGHT ON OSCAR 2011\n* Satellite Shorts\n* ARISS Status - 29 November 2010\n\n\nSB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-339.01\nARISSat Status\n\nAMSAT News Service Bulletin 339.01\n From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.\nDecember 3rd, 2010\nTo All RADIO AMATEURS\nBID: $ANS-339.01\n\nARISSat and the backup unit are in Germany, they are schedulted for \ndelivery to Moscow on Saturday. We will know Tuesday if there were \nany problems getting them through customs. Lou McFadin, W5DID and \nMark Steiner, K3MS will be heading to Moscow on the 10th of December \nto assist with integration and testing of the Kursk experiment and \nbattery. \nThe schedule still has ARISSat going to the ISS via a Progress \nvehicle in late January 2011 and release from the ISS in \nlate February 2011.\n\n\n[ANS thanks Gould, WA4SXM, for the above information]\n\n/EX\n\n\nSB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-332.02\nUO-11 Report\n\nAMSAT News Service Bulletin 332.02\n From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.\nDecember 5th, 2010\nTo All RADIO AMATEURS\nBID: $ANS-332.02\n\n \nThis report covers the period from 29 October to 30 November 2010. During\nthis time the satellite has been heard from 30 October to 09 November and 19\nto 29 November . At the time of writing it is is expected to switch-on 10\nDecember.\n\nExcellent signals have been reported from stations located around the world,\nand good copy obtained from decoded telemetry frames.\n\nThe satellite is now transmitting during eclipses, although signals are\nweaker at those times. This indicates that there is still some capacity\nremaining in the battery.\n\nThe on-board clock is now very stable. It gained eight seconds during\nNovember. This is comparable with its accuracy when the satellite was fully\noperational, when it gained approximately one minute per year. However,\nthere is still an accumulated loss of\n309 days, which has occurred during eclipses of the last few years.\n\nOperation during eclipses and stability of the on-board clock suggest that\nsome part of the system may have recently failed 'open circuit' thus\nreducing the overall power drain of the system, and allowing more power to\nbe available during eclipses.\nWhen analogue telemetry was last transmitted, an unexplained current drain\nwas observed. This fault may have cleared.\n\nThe Beacon frequencies are -\n\n VHF 145.826 MHz. AFSK FM ASCII Telemetry\n\nUHF 435.025 MHz. OFF\n\nS-band 2401.5 MHz. OFF\n\nReception reports have been received from Gene WA4UKX, Horatio CX8AF, David\nG8OQW and Michael M0MPM/PA3BHE . Many thanks for those and to everyone who\nposted reports on the satellite status website.\n\nAt the present time, while OSCAR-11 is operating in a predictable way, I no\nlonger need direct reports by e-mail. However, could you continue to enter\nreports on the general satellite status website. This is a very convenient\nand easy to use facility, which shows the current status of all the amateur\nsatellites, and is of use to everyone. Reports around the expected times of\nswitch-on and switch-off are of special interest. The URL is\nhttp://oscar.dcarr.org/index.php\n\nOSCAR-11 transmits on 145.826 MHz., set receiver to NBFM. The satellite has\na characteristic sound, rather like raspy slow morse code, sending \"di di\ndah dah dah dah dah dah dah\" sent over a period of five seconds. If you are\nreceiving a very weak signal, switch the receiver to CW or SSB. You should\nhear several sidebands around the carrier frequency and should be able to\nhear the characteristic 'morse code like' sound on at least one sideband.\n\nPlease note that you need a clean noise-free signal to decode the signals,\nand your receiver must be set to NBFM mode, for a decoder to work.\n\nIf you need to know what OSCAR-11 sounds like, there is an audio clip on my\nwebsite www.g3cwv.co.uk/ which may be useful for identification and as a\ntest signal for decoding.\n\nThe current status of the satellite, is that all the analogue telemetry\nchannels, 0 to 59 are zero, ie they have failed. The status channels 60 to\n67 are still working. The real time clock is showing a large accumulated\nerror, but is now incrementing accurately to within a few seconds per month.\nThe day of the month has a bit stuck at 'one' so the day of the month may\nshow an error of +40 days for some dates. The time display has switched into\n12 hour mode. Unfortunately, there is no AM/PM indicator, since the time\ndisplay format was designed for 24 hour mode.\n\nThe spacecraft computer and active attitude control system have switched\nOFF, ie. the satellite' attitude is controlled only by the passive gravity\nboom gradient, and the satellite is free to spin at any speed.\n\nThe watchdog timer operates on a 20 day cycle. The ON/OFF times have tended\nto be very consistent. The average of many observations have shown this to\nbe 20.7 days, ie. 10.35 days ON followed by 10.35 days OFF.\n\nListeners to OSCAR-11 may be interested in visiting my website.\nIf you need to know what OSCAR-11 should sound like, there is a short audio\nclip for you to hear. The last telemetry received from the satellite is\navailable for download. The website contains an archive of news & telemetry\ndata which is updated from time to time. It also contains details about\nusing a soundcard or hardware demodulators for data capture. There is\nsoftware for capturing data, and decoding ASCII telemetry. Dick was an active satellite operator in the 1970s\nand 1980s, mostly on CW and usually with a straight key. He was also active\non 50 MHz and the HF bands, and could always be counted on for a kind word\nand a friendly QSO.\n\nThere are no rules, no scoring and no logs required. Just operate CW on any\nOSCAR satellite, using a straight hand key, from 0000 UTC to 2400 UTC on 1\nJanuary 2011, working as many SKN stations as you can..\n\nIn keeping with the friendly nature of this event, each participant is asked\nto nominate one of the operators worked for \"Best Fist.\" It is not necessary\nthat your nominee have the best fist of anyone you heard, just of those you\nworked. Please send your nomination to W2RS via email at [email protected],\nThose nominated will be recognized in an ANS bulletin to be published in\nearly February, and in The AMSAT Journal.\n\n[ANS thanks Ray, W2RS, for the above information]\n\n/EX\n\nSB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-339.04\nSatellite Shorts From All Over\n\nAMSAT News Service Bulletin 339.04\n From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.\nDecember 5th, 2010\nTo All RADIO AMATEURS\nBID: $ANS-339.04\nSatellite Shorts From All Over\n\n+ Look for Drew, KO4MA operating on the satellites from the area\n around NASA Stennis and Slidell, Louisiana.
