Vijian\n\n\n\nNEW DELHI, April 20 (Bernama) -- India successfully placed two\nsatellites in the sky early today, one of which was designed and built\nby Anna University in Chennai -- the first satellite built by an Indian\nuniversity.\n\n\n The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C-12) soared into the sky\nat 6.45am (9.15am in Malaysia) from the Sriharikota spaceport in Andra\nPradesh, in south India, lifting the two satellites, RISAT-2 and ANUSAT\n-- an abbreviation for Anna University Satellite.\n\n\n \"The indigenous ANUSAT was designed, built and fabricated by 10\nfaculty members from Anna University. It took us nearly eight years to\ncomplete.\n\n\n \"This micro satellite will help in storing and forwarding data. It\nwill help us send confidential data, like examination papers. This is a\nproud moment for India and the university,\" Anna University\nvice-chancellor Dr P. Mannar Jawahar told Bernama.\n\n\n The India Space Research Organisation (ISRO) funded the ANUSAT\ncommunication satellite, weighing 40kg and costing nearly RM5 million.\nIt has a life span of two years.\n\n\n The Israel-designed RISAT-2 or Radar Imaging Satellite, weighing\n300kg, with all-weather capability to take images of the earth, would\nenhance ISRO's disaster management ability.\n\n\n \"RISAT will help us in monitoring natural disasters like floods\nand cyclones. It has a life span of three years. ANUSAT is the first\nexperimental communication satellite built by an Indian university\nunder the guidance of ISRO,\" ISRO spokesperson S. Sathis told Bernama.\n\n\n\n Last October, ISRO launched the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft that is now exploring the moon from lunar orbit.\n\n\n\nTo: [email protected]\nFrom: [email protected]\nDate: Wed, 22 Apr 2009 22:13:10 +0000\nSubject: Re: [eu-amsat] ANUSAT - amateur satellite ??.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n\n> One wonders (specifically, LA2QAA) - what 'confidential data \n\n> like examination papers' - would be doing on an 'amateur satellite'. \n\n\n\nI am not aware that anyone at the University has said that confidential data would be passed by the satellite on an Amateur frequency. Do you have any University references for that quote? \n\n\n\nMy understanding was that this was a technology demonstrator for a store and forward system. \n\n\n\nWhile you could in theory build a dedicated satellite for handling exam papers you have to ask why bother since you could use any number of far cheaper alternative systems. \n\n\n\nIt sounds to me like the type of paper justication you might make to get funds for a demonstrator project. Bear in mind that the mass media can distort things that they don't understand. \n\n\n\nOne of the students, Sidharth Balasubramanian, who was involved in the development of the ANUSAT communications system has some information on his website.
