    "content": " Joel, I took a lightning hit with my 847 in 1997. It was a big one, took\nout my sat tv, phone, TNC's , KCT card, computer's, etc.  I had\ndisconnected the antennas, power, everything except the modem(remember\nthem?), that's where it got in, through the phone line, to the rs-232 port.\nI had an APRS station I left up and didn't disconnect during the event and\nit was fine! Go figure. To make a long story short I sent the 847 in that\nwas only 3 weeks old to be looked at. Yaesu graciously fixed it under\nwarranty. I was also Leary about keeping a lightning compromised radio after\na lightning hit but I really didn't want to sell it to anyone so I kept it.\nNow 11 years later it is still working the birds! I just don't want to spend $500 \nfor repairs only to have to send it back six months later for repairs \nagain.  I'll try to fix it, but that's going to be kind of slow - it'll \nalso make for a good teacher.\n\nAs for the rotor controller, I was already going to completely take down \nthe HEO antenna array and put up either homebrew eggbeaters or \nturnstiles.  The 22 elements on 2m and 44 elements on 70cm are a tad \noverkill for what is up there and they need work.  I really want to put \na hexbeam up on that tower anyway.  :)\n\nI guess I'm looking for advice.  Do I send the radio to Yaesu for repair \nor purchase a companion for the 857?  Any other advice is also welcome.\n\nFolks, unplug and disconnect everything.  We had another lightning storm \nlast night.  At 3am, my wife woke me and said, \"Honey, there's \nlight...\"  I ran into the hamshack and just pulled everything out of the \nwall.
