Dragon\nis expected to make its parachute-assisted splashdown around 04:00z\nThursday, July 8.\n\nSplashing down off the coast of Florida enables quick transportation of the\nscience aboard the capsule to NASA’s Space Station Processing Facility at\nthe agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and back into the hands of\nthe researchers. This shorter transportation time frame allows researchers\nto collect data with minimal sample exposure to gravity.\n\nDragon launched June 3 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A\nat Kennedy, arriving at the station a little less than 16 hours later. The\nspacecraft delivered more than 7,300 pounds of research investigations,\ncrew supplies, and vehicle hardware to the orbiting outpost. Dragon’s\nexternal cargo “trunk” carried six new ISS Roll-Out Solar Arrays (iROSAs),\ntwo of which Expedition 65 crew members Kimbrough and Thomas Pesquet, an\nESA (European Space Agency) astronaut, installed during three spacewalks\nJune 16, 20, and 25.\n\nSome of the scientific investigations Dragon will return to Earth include:\n\n * Lyophilization-2 examines how gravity affects freeze-dried materials and\ncould result in improved freeze-drying processes for pharmaceutical and\nother industries. Freeze-drying also has potential use for long-term\nstorage of medications and other resources on future exploration missions.\n * Molecular Muscle Experiment-2 tests a series of drugs to see whether\nthey can improve health in space, possibly leading to new therapeutic\ntargets for examination on Earth.\n * Oral Biofilms in Space studies how gravity affects the structure,\ncomposition, and activity of oral bacteria in the presence of common oral\ncare agents. Findings could support development of novel treatments to\nfight oral diseases such as cavities, gingivitis, and periodontitis.\n\nLearn more about SpaceX missions for NASA at: https://www.nasa.gov/spacex\n\n[ANS thanks NASA for the above information]\n\n--------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nARISS NEWS\n\nAmateurs and others around the world may listen in on contacts between\namateurs operating in schools and allowing students to interact with\nastronauts and cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station.
