I currently work AO-7 and\nthe other non-FM birds (FO-29, VO-52, and - when it was working and\nin SSB - HO-68) with the following:\n\nTX: Yaesu FT-817ND (5W)\nRX: another FT-817ND or Kenwood TH-F6A (all-mode receiver in this HT)\nAnt: Elk Antennas handheld 2m/70cm log periodic\n\nI have a 10-foot length of RG58 from the antenna to a Comet diplexer,\nthen 3-foot lengths from each band's port on the diplexer to each radio.\nI do not use preamps, although on shallow passes I will not use the HT\nas my downlink receiver. The 817's receiver is more sensitive at 2m\nand 70cm in SSB/CW, but HTs like the TH-F6A have receivers that are\nmore sensitive in FM.\n\nIn the past couple of years, I have logged several hundred QSOs in SSB,\nand a handful in CW, with this portable station. I don't have a home station,\nso I do all my operating with this setup from wherever I go. Other than the\nantenna and anything not permitted in carry-on luggage, this station fits in\nan old laptop bag, and has traveled across the US as well as to Canada\nand Mexico.\n\nGood luck, and maybe we can hook up on AO-7 or one of the other non-FM\nbirds. 73!\n\n\n\n\n\nPatrick WD9EWK/VA7EWK\nhttp://www.wd9ewk.net/\n", "attachments": [] }
