Quickly, I\nfound it no challenge when we had AO-51, SO-67, AO-27, and SO-50 on\nFM. The odds are good because there are more unique stations on the\nFM birds. Like the FM birds or not, they DO attract more operators.\nIn about four months, I had over one hundred grids confirmed. In the\noriginal six month goal period, I'd already hit two hundred. It\nslowed down quite a bit.\n\nI changed my goal a little bit as I neared the 6 month window. I\ndecided I'd pursue it via Logbook of the World. That turned out to be\na real challenge! To this day, of the 300+ grids I have confirmed by\ncard, I only have 120 or so confirmed by LoTW. Some of the ones I\nhave in LoTW, however, I do not have in paper cards. I always try to\nreturn the favor and have confirmed 65+ grids for people via LoTW on\nmy road trips.\n\nWith SO-50 our only operational FM bird, I do spend more time on the\nlinear SSB transponder birds. It's fun, of course, since you can have\nan actual QSO rather than a contest-style grid exchange. Heck, I even\npick up a new grid square once in a while. But I miss having AO-51.\nI support FOX-1 as it will be the gateway drug of choice for new\noperators.\n\nOne thing that I have noticed is that about 50% or better of those on\nthe Leader Board for Satellite VUCC are seldom or NEVER heard on the\nsatellites. Maybe they are silent keys or maybe their interests\nchanged. It's just an observation. Not good or bad. If you're one\nof those who hung that piece of paper up and parked your antennas, I'd\nlike to work you. I'm sure others out there could use a grid\nconfirmation.\n\nStill learning, having fun, and making new friends....\n\n73\nClayton\nW5PFG\n\n\nOn Mon, Dec 17, 2012 at 8:01 PM, John Price <[email protected]> wrote:\n> My goodness! For satellite pass\npredictions, I use HamSatDroid. It has worked well on both\ndevices. I don't have a compass on either, since I have a\ncompass in my radio bag. I have installed the \"GPS Status\" app\nto see location and other GPS-related data. The Nexus 7 tablet\nworks only with the US GPS system, where the Nexus 4 phone\nworks with both GPS and the Russian GLONASS systems. I can\nuse the GPS Status app in both devices without an Internet\nconnection, and it does not take long to get a lock on the signals\nand start displaying location data. The Nexus 4 takes less time\nto acquire the signals to calculate my location, with access to two\ndifferent navigation systems, compared to the Nexus 7 tablet.\n\nSo far, these are the only apps I have installed specific to my\nsatellite operating. Both are free apps from the Google Play\nstore. I still use a Sony digital audio recorder, instead of an\napp on either of these devices to record the audio from passes\nI work. The Nexus 4's camera will record 720p or 1080p video,\nand I might make use of that in the future. I still have an iPod,\nand now plan to have the iPod and these new Nexus devices\nwith me for hamfest demonstrations, to show off examples of\napps in either environment.\n\n73!\n\n\n\n\n\nPatrick WD9EWK/VA7EWK\nhttp://www.wd9ewk.net/\n\n\n------------------------------\n\nMessage: 15\nDate: Tue, 18 Dec 2012 11:10:17 -0500\nFrom: Mike Seguin <[email protected]>\nTo: <[email protected]>\nSubject: [amsat-bb] Re: Android Sat Apps\nMessage-ID: <[email protected]>\nContent-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed\n\nUsing a Samsung Galaxy SIII\n\nHamsatdroid - tracking\nHamGPS - 10 digit grid squares\nZP Dashboard - Using the camera phone with HUD for checking position of\nthe pass (AZ/EL)\n\n---\n73,\nMike, N1JEZ\n\"A closed mouth gathers no feet\"\n\nOn Tue, 18 Dec 2012 08:31:50 -0700, Patrick STODDARD (WD9EWK/VA7EWK)\nwrote:\n> Hi Clint!\n>\n>> What apps for the Android platform are you pleased with?\n>> Satellite prediction, compass,\n>> anything satellite-related that comes to mind.\n>\n> I'm a recent convert to Android, buying a Nexus 4 mobile phone\n> and a Nexus 7 tablet in the past month or so.
