Meaning someone could have sat down and added that feature and\nallowed others to benefit from it.\"\n\nIt is the unrealized potential FOSS that is making me grumpy. While I\nthink you were referring to AMSAT satellite software, I was of course\ntalking about GNU Mailman list software. The Mailman software is widely\nknown, and the current version 3 has been under development for years so\nyou would think that all the thousands of \"someones\" out in the open source\ndevelopment world would have gotten the Mailman migration tools right, but\nso far they have not. I put my faith in the open source development\nmethodology and it let me down.\n\nI am simply arguing for realistic expectations of the open source\ndevelopment model. To open source everything AMSAT would be expensive in\nterms of management labor and most likely lawyers, so lets clearly\nunderstand the likelihood that motivated, capable technical experts who can\nfollow through will in fact present themselves as a result. One can of\ncourse point to some spectacular open source successes, but it is a lot\neasier to find stuff half baked and forgotton.\n\nOpen source or not, we can do a better job at communicating with each\nother. I am not that good at it ... I have spent at least 2 hours\ntrying to write this e-mail without accidentally offending anyone, and I am\nnot sure I succeeded. What baby steps can we all take togehter to open up\nas much information as we can as soon as we can?\n\nde KM1P Joe\n\n\n", "attachments": [ { "email": "https://mailman.amsat.org/hyperkitty/api/list/[email protected]/email/ZEIEF3VCP6RFUJ3QWIXQ6O5PNEPKOUEO/?format=api", "counter": 2, "name": "attachment.html", "content_type": "text/html", "encoding": "utf-8", "size": 1973, "download": "https://mailman.amsat.org/hyperkitty/list/[email protected]/message/ZEIEF3VCP6RFUJ3QWIXQ6O5PNEPKOUEO/attachment/2/attachment.html" } ] }
