The completed \nkit, soon to be widely known as a \nPICetSat II module, is a simple remote \nsensing unit that serves as an expendable \nhigh-altitude small balloon payload. \nIt transmits downlink telemetry on the \n70 cm Amateur Radio band. \n\nOther attendees will provide and \nconfigure radios, computers and software \nneeded to receive, decode and analyze \nthe PICetSat II telemetry. \n\nThe workshop is an experiment unto itself \nfor the sponsoring AMSAT-DC group. This \nworkshop may prove to be a fine training \nopportunity for one to learn the basics \nof the design, construction, testing, \ncalibrating and operating an earth-\norbiting satellite. All in one long \nSaturday of fun! \n\nHELP IS NEEDED\nThe workshop planning team meets weekly \non Thursday evenings via a telephone \nconference. If you wish to help organize \nand/or execute the workshop then there may \nstill be time to hop aboard if you are \nquick. Contact me by e-mail for the \ndetails of connecting with the group on \nthe telecom at [email protected]. We \nneed another experienced soldering and \nconstruction helper or two, a photographer, \na videographer, and several \"Go-fers\" to \nname a few. \n\nINFORMATION COMING\nBecause of the workshop's experimental \nnature, the size is designed to be small \nin attendance this inaugural year. It \nwill be an exclusive opportunity to \nAMSAT members, new and old alike. \n\nOn Sunday, March 16, we expect to \nrelease details on the attendance \napplication process and donation. Watch \nfor information about the workshop via \nthe AMSAT News Service (ANS) bulletins, \nthe AMSAT-DC e-mail list, and the local \nAMSAT-DC web page. \n\nIMPORTANT LINKS\nhttp://www.amsat.org/\nhttp://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/tools/maillist/\nhttp://patkilroy.com/amsat-dc/\n\n\nMore info to follow later. This meeting is historically held in early spring at \nor near the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.\n\nPat is proposing individuals and groups of Amateur Radio operators \nform teams who compete at this AMSAT-DC workshop to create and \noperate a satellite mission.\n\nThe first groups will build a PICetSat II flight module from a kit \nof electronic parts on a small printed circuit board. You can see \nan example of the original PICetSat module at:\nhttp://patkilroy.com/simsat/3/\n\nThe second groups will set up simple satellite ground stations to \noperate on 433.920 MHz SSB. These team members need to provide a \nradio, antenna, and feedline for the 70 cm band.\n\nThe third groups will be in charge of setting up and loading soft-\nware in the computers at the ground stations to decode the telemetry \nand to analyze it according to a set of instructions.\n\nThis event will be perfect for beginners and advanced satellite\nusers alike, all ultimately working together to \"launch\" the flight\nmodule, receive the downlink, and decode the telemetry. Instructions \nwill be provided in advance of the event to enhance preparation.\n\nPat notes he needs volunteer help to plan and organize this event.\nA couple of dedicated individuals are needed immediately to start \nthe plans to lock in the workshop meeting space, advertise the event, \nto do the footwork needed to process participant applications, and \nto assure one set of radio and computer stations are on hand and \nready at the start of the workshop. To volunteer contact Pat at his \ne-mail address: [email protected] as soon as possible. Pat will convene \na conference call for all interested participants to finalize the \nWorkshop details with the volunteers.\n\nPat requests that interested amateur radio operators RSVP to him via \ne-mail [email protected] and indicate which group you will be most inter-\nested in working with. The cost of the Workshop is still \"TBD\" to cover\nthe materials and meeting space. Those choosing the PICetSat II will\nkeep their completed project.\n\n[ANS thanks Pat, N8PK for the above information]\n\n/EX\n\n\n-----Original Message-----\nMessage: 1\nDate: Tue, 3 Feb 2009 09:43:37 -0600\nFrom: [email protected]\nSubject: [amsat-dc] AMSAT-DC Workshop Planning Starts\n\nHi! We must start the planning sessions for \nthe next AMSAT-DC gathering. If you would like \nto join us then please send me an RSVP e-mail \nsoon. I will respond to you with the call-in \nnumbers. \n\nOur first planning session will take place next \nweek, via telecon, likely on Thursday evening at \n7:00 PM EST. I hope it will last less than a \nhalf-hour, certainly no more than 45 minutes. \n\nThe first agenda item will be to discuss the \nlocation and date of the all-day event. \n\nYou may check the local AMSAT web page at \nhttp://patkilroy.com/amsat-dc to refresh your \nmemory on what I propose to take shape for \nthis workshop in place of the \"old\" seminar \ntype of meetings that we held in the past. \n\nHope to hear from you soon.
