"content": "Greetings!\n\nThe 2009 AMSAT-DC Workshop was held this\npast Saturday as planned. It was held in\nplace of the annual spring \"AMSAT-DC Meeting\nand Space Seminar\" of previous years, as\nvoted by acclamation at last year's\nmeeting. Something \"new and different\"\nwas the vision. And, ...\n\nWhat a great day ... for education, for\nAMSAT and for NASA!\n\nThe workshop was not without its scrapes,\ncuts and bruises. After all, it was an\nexperiment unto itself, in part to see how\nwell such an event might \"take\" in the\nmid-Atlantic USA region before attempting\nto emerge beyond. In the all-day event, a\ntotal of five individuals participated and\nthree flight modules were built. We had\nhumble beginnings, indeed.\n\nA follow up session is in the planning\nstage. (We didn't have enough time to\ncomplete some troubleshooting and to start\nthe calibration procedure on each module.)\nWe will meet at NASA GSFC again in the next\nmonth or two -- this time, instead of in a\nhuge cushy conference room serving as our\n\"fab lab\", it will be inside a real space\nflight hardware laboratory -- to calibrate\nthe PICetSat II flight sensors.\n\nWould you like to participate in a\ncalibration session? Even if you missed\nthe workshop, you are welcome to \"finish\nthe job\" with us! The session(s) are free,\nbut slots are VERY limited. Current AMSAT\nmembership is required, and an advanced\nRSVP is required for security purposes.\n\nContact me by e-mail if you are interested\nin participating.\n\nAfter our next AMSAT-DC planning telecon\n(to be held within the next two weeks) I\nwill release our calibration date(s) and\ntime.\n\nPlease share the excitement. Please pass\nthe word. What a great day for education\nand outreach. And fun!\n\nRespectfully submitted,\n\nPat Kilroy, N8PK, co-host\nBruce Semple, WA3SWJ, co-host\nAMSAT-DC guys\n\n\n------------------------------------------\nDate: Thu, 5 Mar 2009 14:11:04 -0600\nFrom: [email protected]>\nSubject: [amsat-dc] AMSAT-DC Workshop Saturday,\n April 25, in Greenbelt, Md\nTo: <[email protected]>\n\nAN AMSAT-DC WORKSHOP will be held on\nSaturday, April 25, at the NASA Goddard\nSpace Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.\n\nA small \"simulated satellite\" kit will\nbe built, tested and operated by\nindividuals attending. The completed\nkit, soon to be widely known as a\nPICetSat II module, is a simple remote\nsensing unit that serves as an expendable\nhigh-altitude small balloon payload.\nIt transmits downlink telemetry on the\n70 cm Amateur Radio band.\n\nOther attendees will provide and\nconfigure radios, computers and software\nneeded to receive, decode and analyze\nthe PICetSat II telemetry.\n\nThe workshop is an experiment unto itself\nfor the sponsoring AMSAT-DC group. This\nworkshop may prove to be a fine training\nopportunity for one to learn the basics\nof the design, construction, testing,\ncalibrating and operating an earth-\norbiting satellite. All in one long\nSaturday of fun!\n\nHELP IS NEEDED\nThe workshop planning team meets weekly\non Thursday evenings via a telephone\nconference. If you wish to help organize\nand/or execute the workshop then there may\nstill be time to hop aboard if you are\nquick. Contact me by e-mail for the\ndetails of connecting with the group on\nthe telecom at [email protected]. We\nneed another experienced soldering and\nconstruction helper or two, a photographer,\na videographer, and several \"Go-fers\" to\nname a few.\n\nINFORMATION COMING\nBecause of the workshop's experimental\nnature, the size is designed to be small\nin attendance this inaugural year. It\nwill be an exclusive opportunity to\nAMSAT members, new and old alike.\n\nOn Sunday, March 16, we expect to\nrelease details on the attendance\napplication process and donation. Watch\nfor information about the workshop via\nthe AMSAT News Service (ANS) bulletins,\nthe AMSAT-DC e-mail list, and the local\nAMSAT-DC web page.\n\nIMPORTANT LINKS\nhttp://www.amsat.org/\nhttp://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/tools/maillist/\nhttp://patkilroy.com/amsat-dc/\n\n\nMore info to follow later. Thank you\nfor your patience on this subject.\n\nCheers,\n\nPat Kilroy\nN8PK\nAMSAT Area Coordinator\n\n\n\n",
