ESA challenges anyone to record\nthe signal and send it to us ([email protected]) and Aalborg\nUniversity ([email protected]).\n\nThe first correct email received will win the following prices:\n\nESA/AAUSAT5 poster with signatures of the team members\nESA Education goodie bag\nScale 1:1 3D printed model of the AAUSAT 5 satellite\nAAUSAT5 is the 5th CubeSat designed and built by the University of\nAalborg, Denmark. It is the 2nd AAUSAT satellite tested under ESA’s\nsupervision as part of the ESA Education Office’s Fly Your Satellite\nprogramme.\n\nThe technical objective of AAUSAT5 is to test an improved version\nof an Automatic Identification System (AIS), which aims to track and\nidentify ships transiting away from coastal areas and those in remote\nareas.\n\nIf successful, a satellite-based AIS system could enable the\nestablishment and use of safe new shipping lanes.\n\nFor more information please see the ESA AAUSAT5 website\nhttp://www.esa.int/Education/CubeSats_-\n_Fly_Your_Satellite/AAUSAT5_CubeSat\nand the team site from the University of Aalborg.\nhttp://www.space.aau.dk/aausat5/\n\n[ANS thanks ESA for the above information]\n\n\n---------------------------------------------------------------------\n\n\nLAPAN-A2 To Be Launched September 28\n\nLAPAN-A2 satellite will be launched together on a mission astrosat\nIndia's PSLV-C30 / astrosat on 28 Sep 2015. It will operate in the\nnear equatorial orbit between 6 to 8 degree, 650km and able to cross\nthe territory of Indonesia 14 times a day.\n\nLAPAN A2, also known as LAPAN-ORARI, is an indonesian microsatellite\nbased on the LAPAN-Tubsat. It carries an AIS (Automatic\nIdentification System) to identify the ships in the waters of\nIndonesia and a video camera with a range three times wider than the\nLapan-Tubsat. It also carries a payload for disaster management by\namateur radio communication.\n\nThe satellite structure and many subsystems are the same as in its\nsister satellite LAPAN A3.\n\nThe Earth observation payload of LAPAN A2 consists of a Video camera\n(Kappa PAL) for 80 km width ground coverage and a Video camera (Kappa\nHDTV for high resolution satellite color video observation with a\nground resolution of 6 m and a ground coverage of 11 × 6 km per video\nframe.\n\nLAPAN-A2 carries a payload of voice repeaters and an APRS Repeater\nfor communications of the Organisation for Amateur Radio Indonesia\n(ORARI) during a disaster.\n\n[ANS thanks Wisnu YBØAZ and Gunter's Space Page for the above\ninformation]\n\n\n---------------------------------------------------------------------\n\n\nARISS-Europe Chairman Retires, Successor Elected\n\nAmateur Radio on the International Space Station-Europe (ARISS-EU\nhttp://www.ariss-eu.org/) Chairman Gaston Bertels, ON4WF, will retire\nfrom that post this fall after serving since 2000, when the ARISS\nWorking Group was formed. Among other initiatives, Bertels was\ninvolved in the project to have Amateur Radio equipment and antennas\ninstalled on the ISS Columbus module and with the installation and\ncommissioning of the Ham TV DATV system on the ISS. He has also\npersonally assisted in many ARISS contacts involving schools and\ngroups on the Continent.\n\n\"[I'm] now 88 and slowing down a bit,\" Bertels told ARRL in\nannouncing the election of his successor as ARISS-EU Chairman,\nEmanuele D'Andria, I0ELE.\n\nIn 2014, International Amateur Radio Union Region 1 (IARU-R1\nhttp://www.iaru-r1.org) awarded the Roy Stevens, G2BVN, Memorial\nTrophy to Bertels, in recognition of his service to Amateur Radio in\nspace, first as chairman of the Eurocom Working Group and then of the\nAmateur Radio Space Exploration Working Group.\n\nAs Bertels explained, a slate of four ARISS-EU Board candidates was\npresented to the ARISS-EU member societies. All ran unopposed for 2-\nyear terms. In addition to D'Andria, other Board members include\nOliver Amend, DG6BCE, technical director; Bertus Hüsken, PE1KEH,\ncounselor, and Jean Pierre Courjaud, F6DZP, counselor. The new ARISS-\nEU Board takes office on October 1.\n\nThe ARISS membership includes the AMSAT organizations in Belgium,\nFrance, Italy, Sweden, and the UK, and the IARU member societies in\nItaly, Germany, Poland, France, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland, the\nNetherlands, and the UK. IARU member societies in Malta and Lebanon\nare associate members.\n\n\"Congratulations to the elected Board, and best wishes for a very\nsuccessful term of office,\" Bertels said in announcing the new board.\n\n[ANS thanks The ARRL Letter for the above information]\n\n\n---------------------------------------------------------------------\n\n\nSpace Auction to be held again at this year’s AMSAT Symposium\n\nIn light of the very successful—and fun—auction at last year’s AMSAT\nSymposium, AMSAT-NA is pleased to announce that you can look forward\nto another auction at this year’s Symposium. The auction will be\nheld at the Friday night reception. Drew Glasbrenner, KO4MA, has\nagain volunteered to be the Auctioneer.\n\nTo date, we have several space-related items for the auction.\nHowever, to make this auction, interesting, fun, and “profitable”**\nwe could use many more items. Some of the items auctioned last year\nincluded several astronaut autographed items, including a DVD from\nRichard Garriott, Russian memorabilia, spacecraft and rocket models,\nspace related books, the sign from the AMSAT Lab and items from\nprevious AMSAT satellites.\n\nIf you have any space or AMSAT related items you would like to\ndonate for the auction, please contact Frank Bauer, KA3HDO, at\[email protected]. Think about this and use your creativity as this\nis for a good cause. We thank you for your donations in advance!\n\n**And don’t forget that AMSAT is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit\norganization. So your auction donations are tax deductible!!\n\n[ANS thanks Frank KA3HDO for the above information]\n\n\n---------------------------------------------------------------------\n\n\nAMSAT Space Symposium Paper Publication Deadline Looms\n\nAMSAT Space Symposium Proceedings Chairman, Dan Shultz, N8FGV,\nreminds all that the final deadline for receiving Papers for\npublication in the AMSAT Symposium Proceedings is\n\nMONDAY SEPTEMBER 28.\n\nFinal drafts should be submitted to Dan, n8fgv (at) usa (dot) net.\n\nDan advises that authors who are pushing hard to meet this deadline\nshould contact him immediately. n8fgv (at) usa (dot) net.\n\nThese papers will be presented at the AMSAT Space Symposium to be\nheld on the weekend of October 16-18, 2015, at the Crown Plaza Hotel,\nDayton, Ohio.\n\n[ANS thanks Dan N8FGV for the above information]\n\n\n---------------------------------------------------------------------\n\n\nFox Telemetry Decoder Software Version 1.0 Available for Download\n\nVersion 1.0 of the FoxTelem software, the Fox Telemetry Decoder is\nbeing released to enable setup, testing, and debugging of your Fox-1A\nground station prior to the launch of the satellite. FoxTelem is used\nto demodulate, store and analyze telemetry data from AMSAT's Fox\nseries of Cube Sats.\n\nFox-1 satellites include two telemetry formats:\n\n+ Slow Speed, also called Data Under Voice (DUV) is 200 bps FSK data\n sent at the same time as the transponder audio. Whenever the trans-\n mitter is on, data is being sent. This happens during beacons and\n during live QSOs.\n\n+ High Speed is 9600 bps FSK sent instead of the transponder. This is\n used for data intensive experiments such as the Virginia Tech\n Camera.\n This is only active when commanded from the ground. You can\n recognize High Speed because it sounds like an old school computer\n modem.\n\nFoxTelem will receive and store both formats assuming you can feed\nit audio that does not have the frequencies below 200 Hz filtered.\nFor High Speed, the audio must also extend to include the full\n9600bps bandwidth of the FM signal. For both modes this is best\nachieved from a Software Defined Radio or from the 9600 bps packet\nport of some radios. The FoxTelem User Guide provides more details.\n\nFoxTelem is supplied as an archive file (.zip on windows, .dmg file on\nMacOs, .gzip on Linux). Links for downloading can be found at:\nhttp://www.amsat.org/?page_id=4532\nYou can unzip the contents and put it in the directory of your\nchoice. Also,\ndetailed in the User Guide, are instructions to select the sound\nsource and\nset received audio levels on your computer.\n\nUntil Fox-1A is launched you can confirm everything is working by\ntesting with test wav file which will be available from:\nhttp://amsat.us/FoxTelem/recordings . Access to the test file is\naccomplished by selecting \"Load Wav File\" from the FoxTelem File\nmenu, then navigate to the directory where you saved the test wav\nfile. Once you press the start button the file will play through the\ndecoder.\n\nThe FoxTelem page can also be accessed from the main AMSAT web page:\nhttp://www.amsat.org --> Fox Project --> FoxTelem Software for\nWindows, Mac, & Linux.\nThe direct link to the page is: http://www.amsat.org/?page_id=4532\n\n[ANS thanks the FoxTelem software team for the above information]\n\n\n---------------------------------------------------------------------\n\n\nARISS-US Contact Proposals for Schools, Educational Organizations\nStill Being Accepted\n\nMessage to US Educators\nAmateur Radio on the International Space Station\nContact Opportunity\nCall for Proposals\nProposal Window September 1 – November 1, 2015\n\nThe Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Program\nis seeking formal and informal education institutions and\norganizations, individually or working together, to host an Amateur\nRadio contact with a crew member on board the ISS. ARISS anticipates\nthat the contact would be held between July 1 and December 31, 2016.\nCrew scheduling and ISS orbits will determine the exact contact\ndates. To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS is\nlooking for organizations that will draw large numbers of\nparticipants and integrate the contact into a well-developed\neducation plan.\n\nThe deadline to submit a proposal is November 1, 2015. Proposal\ninformation and documents can be found at www.arrl.org/hosting-an-\nariss-contact.\n\nInformational Sessions\nTo help organizations in preparing their proposals, the ARISS\nProgram Coordinator will offer hour-long online information sessions.\nThese are designed to provide more information regarding US ARISS\ncontacts and the proposal process and offer an opportunity to ask\nquestions. While attending an online information session is not\nrequired, it is strongly encouraged.\n\nThe next and last of these will be offered Wednesday, September 30,\nat 2300 UTC.\n\nAdvance registration is necessary. E-mail ARISS ([email protected]) to\nsign up for an information session.\n\nThe Opportunity\nCrew members aboard the International Space Station will participate\nin scheduled Amateur Radio contacts. These radio contacts are\napproximately 10 minutes in length and allow students and educators\nto interact with the astronauts through a question-and-answer session.\n\nAn ARISS contact is a voice-only communication opportunity via\nAmateur Radio between astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the space\nstation and classrooms and communities. ARISS contacts afford\neducation audiences the opportunity to learn firsthand from\nastronauts what it is like to live and work in space and to learn\nabout space research conducted on the ISS. Students also will have an\nopportunity to learn about satellite communication, wireless\ntechnology, and radio science. Because of the nature of human\nspaceflight and the complexity of scheduling activities aboard the\nISS, organizations must demonstrate flexibility to accommodate\nchanges in contact dates and times.\n\nAmateur Radio organizations around the world, NASA, and space\nagencies in Russia, Canada, Japan and Europe sponsor this educational\nopportunity by providing the equipment and operational support to\nenable direct communication between crew on the ISS and students\naround the world via Amateur Radio. In the US, the program is managed\nby AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) and ARRL (American\nRadio Relay League) in partnership with NASA.\n\nMore Information\nInterested parties can find more information about the program at\nwww.ariss.org and www.arrl.org/ARISS.\n\nFor proposal information and more details such as expectations,\nproposal guidelines and proposal form, and dates and times of\nInformation Sessions go to http://www.arrl.org/hosting-an-ariss-\ncontact.
