As part of\nthis there will be available on site a fully operational satellite\nstation for demonstrations and use. More will be announced as this\nprogram develops.\n\nOur keynote speaker this year will be Mr. Sy Liebergot, a former EECOM\ncontroller responsible for the electrical and environmental systems\nonboard the Apollo Command Module. He was part of the team that guided\nApollo 13 back to Earth following the explosion which crippled the\nspacecraft. For movie buffs, in the Apollo 13 movie, Sy Liebergot was\nplayed by Clint Howard, the brother of director Ron Howard.\n\nThe Pittsburgh Airport Marriott Hotel has fine accommodations including\nwireless internet access. Shopping and dining venues are easily\naccessible from the hotel as well scenic views of downtown Pittsburgh.\nMarriott has not yet provided a reservation code but it will be\nannounced as soon as we have it. An announcement will be issued by mid\nMay 2007 that reservations for the symposium and hotel will be taken\nfrom the 2007 Space Symposium page of AMSAT.org.\n\nFinally the Call For Papers announcement will follow shortly.\n\nBasic Information:\n\nPreliminary Symposium Information:\nhttp://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/symposium/2007/index.php\n\nWhere:\nPittsburgh Airport Marriott Hotel\n777 Aten Road (Moon Run exit of PA 60)\nCoraopolis, PA 15108\n\t\nPhone: 1-412-788-8800\nFax: 1-412-788-0743\nToll-free: 1-800-328-9297\n\nhttp://marriott.com/hotels/travel/pitmc-pittsburgh-airport-marriott/\n\nSymposium Rate: \t\nSingle $104 per night (this is a special Symposium rate)\n\nWhen:\nOctober 25, 26, 27, & 28, 2007\n\nPreliminary Agenda:\n\nThursday, October 25 through Friday noon, October 26, 2007 BOD meeting\n\t\t\nFriday, October 26, 2007\nSymposium First Session; 1:00 to 5:00 PM Annual meeting; 5:00 to 6:00 PM\nIntroduction to Amateur Satellites by Gould Smith; 7:30 - 9:00 PM\n\nSaturday, October 27, 2007\nSymposium Second Session; 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon Symposium Third Session;\n1:30 PM to 5:00 PM Cocktails & Hors D'ourves; 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM Banquet\n(Keynote Speaker Mr. Sy Liebergot); 7:30 PM till ?\n\nSunday, October 28, 2007\nArea Coordinators meeting; 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM Tour (details to be announced);\n\n9:00 AM to ?\n\nThe Wireless Association of South Hills Amateur Radio Club and area\nAMSAT members are excited and eager for the chance to provide attendees\na great Pittsburgh Pennsylvania experience.\n\nSincerely,\n\nKevin Smith, N3HKQ\nPat Sanford, KC4WTT\nCo-chairs\n2007 AMSAT Space Symposium\n\n[ANS thanks Kevin and Pat for the above information]\n\n/EX\n\n\nSB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-112.03\nOSCAR-11 REPORT\n\nAMSAT News Service Bulletin 112.03\n From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.\nApril 22, 2007\nTo All RADIO AMATEURS\nBID: $ANS-112.03\n\n\n\nRECEPTION REPORTS REQUESTED!\n\nOSCAR-11 is expected to switch ON around 22:00 UTC 21 April. This is\njust after the start of solar eclipses, which may cause the satellite\nto switch OFF for 21 days. In the past the satellite has been very\nsensitive to the start of eclipse season, although the duration of the\neclipses is initially very short. Please send reception reports to the\naddress below or post to amsat-bb. If you are able to record the\nsatellite as a WAV file, please do so, but let Clive know what you have,\nbefore sending it!\n\nIf you need to hear what the satellite sounds like, please visit\nhttp://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/clivew/ The satellite transmits on\n145.826 MHz NBFM.\n\nDuring the period 22 March to 17 April 2007, the satellite's 145.826 MHz.\nbeacon was heard from 01 to 11 April . Excellent signals have beeen heard\non most passes, and good copy of the telemetry obtained.\n\nIf the satellite's watchdog timer continues to operate normally, the\nbeacon should switch ON around 21/22 April 2007. However, solar eclipses\nare expected to start on 20 April and will continue until 23 August.\nIf the satellite performs as it did last year, it is unlikely to be\nheard, for any length of time, during the eclipse season.\n\nClive said, \"I am indebted to David G8OQW, Jeff KB2M, Edward BX1AD,\nSil ZL2CIA, Gene WA4UKX and Rik, ON4GJ for their reports. Many thanks.\"\n\nThe spacecraft computer and active attitude control system have switched\nOFF, ie. the satellite' attitude is controlled only by the passive gravity\nboom gradient, and the satellite is free to spin at any speed. When\ntelemetry was last received it showed that one of the solar arrays had\nfailed, and there was a large unexplained current drain on the main 14\nvolt bus. After 22 years in orbit the battery has undergone around 100,000\npartial charge/discharge cycles, and observations suggest that it cannot\npower the satellite during eclipses, or sometimes during periods of poor\nsolar attitude.\n\nThe Beacon frequency is VHF 145.826 MHz. The second in an on-going series of high altitude bal-\nloon flights carrying Amateur Radio, ARBONET-2 is being dedicated to\nthe memory of Kim R. Miles, N9IS SK, a long time contributor to the\ncentral Indiana Windtrax Amateur Radio High Altitude Balloon team who\npassed away March 27th at the age of 51.\n\nARBONET-2 will be launched from the JD Trissell Airport in Clarksville,\nTX which is located in the northeast corner of the Lone Star State.\nLaunch time is scheduled for 9:00 AM CDT on Saturday April 28th. Current\nwinds aloft forecasts indicate the ground track of the flight will\ncarry the amateur payloads into the southwest corner of the state of\nArkansas. If ARBONET-2 reaches its expected altitude of 96,000 ft,\nradio amateurs in parts of as many as seven states should be able to\nmonitor the beacons and communicate through the cross band repeater\nonboard the near space vehicle.\n\nThe compliment of payloads aboard ARBONET-2 include:\n\n A plain language homing beacon that will transmit navigation data\nto the ground on 146.560 MHz in plain English thus allowing anyone\nwith a scanner or 2 meter hand-held in the coverage zone to follow\nthe progress of the flight without the need for additional equipment\nto process the data.\n\nAn APRS beacon operating on 144.390 MHz to report vehicle location\ndata throughout the duration of the flight and to aid in the recovery\nof the packages following descent.\n\nA 70 cm Up / 2 meter Down Cross band FM repeater (445.800MHz Up\n147.560 MHz Down) will support two way communications during the\nduration of the ARBONET-2 flight.\n\nA 10 meter CW beacon experiment produced by the Richardson Wireless\nKlub, K5RWK will transmit a 500 milliwatt signal on 28.061 MHZ.\n\nIn addition, ARBONET-2 will carry a number of secondary payloads that\nwill perform remote data collection functions for analysis once the\npayloads are recovered. These payloads include a 4 mega pixel digital\ncamera configured to capture images every 30 seconds through the dura-\ntion of the flight, a self contained balloon burst video system design-\ned to capture images of the balloon burst event, a three axis acceler-\nometer and other environmental data loggers.\n\nOperators are encouraged to submit reception reports from the ARBONET-2\nflight to team members via the ARBONET web site: www.arbonet.net. A\nspecial commemorative QSL card will be made available to everyone who\nsubmits reception reports to the ARBONET team.\n\nAn ARBONET Launch Information HF net will be held on 7.260 MHz ( ± 10 KHz)\n\nbeginning at 8:30 AM CDT to report the progress of flight preparations\nand to provide real time coverage of the expected 2 and a half hour flight.\n\nThe ARBONET team encourages radio amateurs throughout the flight's coverage\nzone to make use of the payloads aboard ARBONET-2.\n\nAdditional updates will be posted to the ARBONET web site in the days\nleading up to the mission. In the event weather conditions cause a post-\nponement of the launch, the next launch attempt is scheduled for the\nfollowing Saturday, May 5th.\n\n[ANS thanks ARBONET Membes for the above information]\n\n73,\nThis week's ANS Editor,\nDee Interdonato, NB2F\nnb2f at amsat dot org\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n", "attachments": [] }
