While I will be focusing\nmost of my efforts on business activities, I will do my best to make the\ntransition seamless\", stated Rick in an e-mail to the current members of the\nAMSAT Board of Directors. Rick has served as President of AMSAT since October\n2004.\n\nThe current Board of Directors election concludes on Monday, September\n15, when results of the balloting will be announced. Members of the\nnew Board will then begin a formal search process to recruit and\nselect a new President. This process is expected to take several\nweeks with the goal of having a new President identified prior to the\nAMSAT Board of Directors meeting on October 23, prior to the AMSAT\nSymposium in Atlanta. The search process starts immediately with an\ninvitation to current AMSAT members (including BOD members, Senior\nAdvisors, Officers, and the AMSAT general membership) to suggest\ncurrent AMSAT members that they would recommend for consideration.\nRecommendations are requested by 1900 EDT Tuesday evening, September\n16 to the AMSAT Corporate Secretary (Barry Baines, WD4ASW; e-mail:\[email protected]). Names that are submitted will be initially reviewed by the\nBOD and those candidates that the Board would like to follow up with will be\ncontacted concerning the interview/selection process.\n\nRick Hambly, W2GPS will continue to fulfill his duties as President\nuntil the Board meeting in October. His current term on the Board of\nDirectors expires in September 2009.\n\n[ANS thanks the AMSAT-NA Board of Directors for the above information]\n\n/EX\n\n\nSB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-258.02\nWorldwide Amateur Radio Effort Saves COMPASS Cubesat\n\nAMSAT News Service Bulletin 258.02\n From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.\nSeptember 14, 2008\nTo All RADIO AMATEURS\nBID: $ANS-258.02\n\nMike, DK3WN said this week that a worldwide amateur radio effort\nsaved the COMPASS cubesat. Mike reports receiving reports of\ngood COMPASS beacons from Japan. The COMPASS cubesat has not reset\nover several eclipse periods and remains operational.\n\nThe problem that depleted the batteries aboard COMPASS had its\nheater remain on constantly. Amateur radio stations around the\nworld successfully transmitted the command to turn off the heater\nand allowed the batteries to recover.\n\nAfter the heater was turned off Mike wrote, \"The only thing we can\ndo is WAIT. Wait for longer sun periods and voltages over 3.47 Volts.\nThat's the standard threshold value in emergency mode to switch into\npowersafe mode. Only in this mode we can change the threshold values.\nAs of September 8, COMPASS was back in its powersafe mode of oper-\nation.\n\nAs of September 10 COMPASS was back in NORMAL mode. Mike had gained\ncontrol of the satellite and could successfully command the satellite.\n\nMike summarized, \"Thanks to all - this is truly a worldwide ham radio\neffort - thanks so much for your help. Also, PLEASE do NOT send any\ncommands to COMPASS until further notice. If you send any commands\nyou overwrite the current settings and COMPASS may fall back into\nemergency mode. We almost lost a cubesat, but we've definitely gained\nsome new friends. Thank you all for your efforts!\"\n\nMeanwhile please listen to the beacon and keep your fingers crossed\nthat COMPASS will remain in its normal mode.\n\n[ANS thanks Mike, DK3WN, for the above information]\n\n/EX\n\n\nSB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-258.03\nCollege Satellite Nite - 18 September 2008\n\nAMSAT News Service Bulletin 258.03\n From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.\nSeptember 14, 2008\nTo All RADIO AMATEURS\nBID: $ANS-258.03\n\nA college Satellite night will be held Thursday, September 18, 2008 (local\ntime).
