Upcoming School Contact\n\nThe Challenger Learning Center of Alaska in Kenai, Alaska has\nbeen scheduled for an ARISS contact on Saturday, July 7. The\ncenter engages Elementary and Middle school students in space\nexploration, science, math and technology. Home schooled children\nwill also be invited to participate in the contact and there\nis a possibility of reaching rural students through a School\nAccess video conference. Workshops are planned prior to the\ncontact to introduce children to the ISS, its mission and the\ncrew's responsibilities. Students will participate in poster\nand essay competitions related to space exploration. Media\nwill be notified and coverage is expected on both a local\nand national level.\n\n2. Astronaut Training Status\n\nExpedition 17 backup crew members Nicole Stott, KE5GJN, and\nTim Kopra, KE5LUT, participated in an ARISS training session on\nWednesday, June 27. Using a Kenwood D700, the astronauts answered\nquestions posed to them by the trainers, simulating a school\ncontact aboard the ISS and allowing them to familiarize themselves\nwith the operation of the radio system.\n\n3. ARRL QST Articles\n\nThe American Radio Relay League's July QST included several news\nitems about the ARISS program:\n\n + An \"In Brief\" note about the ARRL Foundation granting an\n additional $2000 toward the cost of constructing and installing\n antennas on the new Columbus ISS module (page 12).\n\n + Two photos and a half column of print space on Space Day at the\n National Air and Space Museum (page 13).\n\n + Author Wayne Yoshida's technical article on microwave radio (Wayne\n has written a number of QST items over the years) contained a\n footnote stating that the most memorable ham radio experience of\n his life was working in the press room as a volunteer at Johnson\n Space Center during the 1983 Owen Garriott flight aboard STS-9/\n Spacelab-1 where Owen made the first-ever ham radio contacts\n from space (page 30).\n\n + A half page special on Bill McArthur's presentation at the ARRL\n annual Donor Reception (page 43).\n\n + Another 1/4 page on Bill McArthur meeting and greeting hams who\n came to ARRL's booths during the Dayton Hamvention held on May 18-20\n (page 43-44).\n\n4.
