That will weigh out against how much time we \r\nhave to meet support beyond the expected base level of EM/FM, manual, \r\nand some help with difficulties or bugs in getting it talking to their \r\nspacecraft bus.\r\n\r\nAnd then cost, a one or two-off (EM, FM) build is more expensive than 5 \r\nor 10 so AMSAT should consider whether we want to do a run to have \r\nothers available for yet-unknown disposition or just serve customers on \r\nan as-needed basis. Since we generally do not want to charge anyone for \r\nthe LTM (in-kind would probably be smart but is up to you, not \r\nEngineering) then whatever costs we will absorb should fit our vision \r\nand due diligence on spending.\r\nAnd there are other factors IMO with that cost such as how long the \r\nmission will last. I would expect them to operate the amateur radio \r\nuntil the spacecraft demise, not just until their experiments are done. \r\nI would expect the best possible orbit to extend that life and in that, \r\nwith Keith's mention of OD regs US vs. Canada if they can go higher and \r\nlonger, it makes sense to perhaps consider a minimum orbit lifetime of x \r\nyears for the cost to us for the LTM and support. Like, not an ISS \r\ndeploy for six months or a year IMO.\r\n\r\nSummary: Yes, we have the potential capacity. What exactly that means \r\nin terms of all of the above, is the real question.\r\nI see no, or negative, value in saying we'll provide this \r\nfree-to-hamsats LTM sure thing let's go only to fail for whatever \r\neventualities (including supply chain). The risk of losing any future \r\nchances by failure far outweighs over-optimism on meeting the sales pitch.\r\n\"AMSAT has been offering a fully tested cubesat transponder suite to \r\nthose groups interested in building and launching \"amateur radio \r\nqualified\" experiments into earth orbit\" is a sales pitch that does \r\nbother me. Perhaps we should consider finding some better coincidence \r\nof sales pitch vs. realism.\r\nWe do not want to own, or expect to be given, any or all LTM we give \r\naway. You have it (our) radio, you license it, you operate it, you own \r\nit, you keep it.\r\nI think Keith is on that but it's not apparent in this email. It has to \r\nbe, in whatever sales pitch.\r\nAnd what is a \"transponder suite\", anyway?\r\n\r\nJerry Buxton, NØJY\r\nVice President - Engineering\r\nRadio Amateur Satellite Corp.\r\n(AMSAT)\r\n\r\n\r\n\n\n", "attachments": [ { "email": "https://mailman.amsat.org/hyperkitty/api/list/[email protected]/email/QHVDTEMS3MX73HY2SE4LSWZ47RAPIWFH/", "counter": 2, "name": "attachment.html", "content_type": "text/html", "encoding": "utf-8", "size": 3684, "download": "https://mailman.amsat.org/hyperkitty/list/[email protected]/message/QHVDTEMS3MX73HY2SE4LSWZ47RAPIWFH/attachment/2/attachment.html" } ] }
