If you have a working VU station be sure to work TF/NJ7H while he's in Iceland. Until this year Iceland was very rare via satellite and it's incredible that Gabe has been there twice this year. And, FO-29 is now in just about the best possible position to give everyone in the CONUS a chance for a Satellite QSO. He's also planning to visit the Faroe Islands and later Greenland. Those are even more incredibly rare. Even if your DXCC count is low, work him NOW. It could be many years before any of these come up again, and if you miss him, someday you'll regret it. Ryan, What 6 are you referring to? ? The three are SO-50, AO-85 and Lilactsat-2 (rarely active). IO-86 has an FM transponder, but it's equatorial orbit is unacscesable from the US. EO-80 will most likely never be activated, for reasons I don’t recall, I'm sure someone will fill in that blank. The only other one I can think of is the ISS, whose repeater is again very rarely active and then usually when the downlink is available for other uses (as was the case when they tested the Russian satellites earlier this week.) TF/NJ7H HP74

Hello bird peoples, I'll be venturing to HP74 in the morning (Friday 7/7). This grid has only a tiny sliver of land in it. My must-work passes are: 1208Z FO-29 1313Z SO-50 1358Z FO-29 Planning a fixed transmit of 145.940 on FO-29. In case of QRM (lids, EO-88 beacon, etc), I'll plan to move down. When FO-29 goes to polar bear country on the early pass I may QSY to AO-7 if I'm not getting any more customers. AO-7 of course needs to be in mode B or C (overhead pass in EU, who knows), but it has good footprint to the US, but the QSY assumes I'm not working anyone further on FO-29. There are some other passes on various birds while I am there, I may get on randomly or can get on by request. There are some good looking SO-50 passes later which will cover most of the Eastern US and Europe that I will plan to be on, although I cannot guarantee grid (likely not HP74, probably 84 or maybe 94). With that being said, it is a three hour drive to the HP74 in the morning and I need to get a bit of sleep for this one. I'm gonna go ahead and call it QRT for the day. To those on the west coast who still haven't worked me, I'll get on more of the late-night western passes in the coming days. Find a decent horizon, seriously. You have a rover in TF who can work the horizon and I happen to be here during apogee season, this is a rare opportunity to work Europe from the North American west coast, try not to keep blowing it. As far as future plans for the trip, I am looking to get back to HP93 and hopefully IP03 (maybe IP04 also). Possibly a grid line (dare I say, a corner). I'll try to get on some NA bound passes from these, possibly even FO-29 on Saturday morning. Howdy all, In case anyone was looking for one of these gems, there's a E4406A w/ the baseband inputs on eBay for an amazing price. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Agilent-E4406A-VSA-Series-Transmitter-Tester-7-MHz-… I suspect this unit is in perfect shape, judging from the displays pictured. Tanyusha 1 (RS6S) heard over southwestern USA earlier today

Hi! It looks like Tanyusha 1 was activated on schedule today, as I heard it on 145.800 MHz as the ISS passed over the western USA around 1918 UTC today. This was a very high pass over central Arizona, maximum elevation of 62 degrees. As I tried (unsuccessfully) to work stations on the 145.825 MHz packet digipeater with my TH-D74, I used the audio recording function on the HT to capture the signals on 145.800 MHz. My recording would momentarily cut out whenever the HT transmitted, but I only missed the identification before one of the 3 messages I heard. According to the ARISS press release from last week, Tanyusha 1 transmits messages in Russian, English, Spanish, and Chinese. I copied 3 of those 4 messages, missing only the Spanish message. Before each message played, the satellite would identify itself in English, "Romeo Sierra Six Sierra". I have posted links to the recordings I made in a post on the QRZ satellite forum earlier this afternoon. Little Cayman EK99/FK09 SO-50 and FO-29 paases

Happy July 4th! I hope everybody is enjoying a wonderful day enjoying festivities, friedships and fireworks. Someone is going to owe me a couple of big steaks and a few cases of decent beer after this adventure!! I have had multiple requests to make it to FK09 and I managed to secure a ride to the EK99/FK09 line here on Little Cayman for the next two nights. I am returning to Grand Cayman on Thursday the 6th at noon time. Assuming no issues with the equipment, (it is very hot and very humid here) and assuming the mosquitoes stay away after some heavy DEET action, I plan to get on the following passes this evening and tomorrow evening: SO-50: 0123Z to 0135Z July 5thFO-29: 0203Z to 0222Z July 5th I know Sean KX9X/9 will in on SO-50 at the same time. I will defer the early part of the pass to him. Tomorrow: SO-50: 0148Z to 0201Z July 6thFO-29: 0253Z to 0313Z July 6th I anticipate SO-50 will be tough. Please, please make sure you can work full duplex if possible. The last time I operated from FK09 many years ago it was mayhem on SO-50 and few stations managed to get through. I had a great couple of passes on FO-29 from Grand Cayman a few days ago and I really appreciated the very orderly contacts during that pass. I hope we can do the same again this time. Lora and other modes

Is Lora a candidate for satellites? How well does it handle doppler? Given that it uses CSS(Chirp Spread Spectrum), it is claimed to be resilient to doppler shift. Does anybody have any further details or knowledge? My understanding is that the RFM22B didn't use LORA protocol as used in the $50 sat. I'd appreciate more details. We are trying to evaluate a radio technology that is widely and cheaply available to be placed into a cubesat. - Ashhar Farhan, VU2ESE

IARU Revises Satellite Coordination Guidelines to Align with WRC-15 Decisions 07/03/2017 Starting on August 1, the International Amateur Radio Union (_IARU_ (http://www.iaru.org/) ) will follow revised guidelines for satellite frequency coordination. Educational satellite projects have grown in popularity as launch opportunities have increased. These satellites, constructed by students at universities and other institutions, generally have been licensed to operate in the Amateur-Satellite Service, which the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) _Radio Regulations_ (http://search.itu.int/history/HistoryDigitalCollectionDocLibrary/1.43.48.en…) define as having the “ purpose of self-training, intercommunication, and technical investigations carried out by amateurs…interested in radio technique solely with a personal aim and without pecuniary interest.” “The strong preference is for all satellites using spectrum allocated to the Amateur and Amateur-Satellite services to operate under amateur licenses and within the definition of the Amateur-Satellite service and the service-specific Article 25 of the Radio Regulations,” IARU said in announcing the change. “The IARU believes the definition is sufficiently broad to encompass nearly all educational satellite projects that include giving students hands-on experience with radiocommunication and are conducted under an amateur license.” Some administrations have issued experimental licenses for such satellites operating in Amateur-Satellite Service bands. The IARU has coordinated these satellites as well, to reduce the possibility of harmful interference that might result from uncoordinated operation. Since July 1, 2014, however, it has not been possible to coordinate experimental satellites in the 144-146 MHz band, because of the high probability of harmful interference in this heavily used band. IARU will continue to coordinate satellites with combined amateur and non-amateur missions. It will only coordinate a non-amateur satellite if an administration directs in writing that it be operated in an Amateur-Satellite band under an experimental or other non-amateur license. The new guidelines bring IARU’s satellite coordination policies into line with Resolution 659 at World Radiocommunication Conference 2015 (WRC-15). The resolution noted that the use of 144-146 MHz and 435-438 MHz by non-amateur satellites was not in accordance with the definition of the Amateur-Satellite service in the Radio Regulations. Resolution 659 made clear that the spectrum needs of what are now called “non-geostationary satellites with short duration missions” should be met either within the service in which the space station is operating, or within the Space Operation Service. If new or upgraded allocations to the Space Operation Service are needed, studies should be limited to the frequency ranges 150.05-174 MHz and 400.15-420 MHz, IARU said. WRC-19 has been invited to consider steps to facilitate the deployment and operation of nanosatellites and picosatellites. Such satellites generally must use spectrum below 1 GHz for operational reasons. FM Birds

As someone myself not into the FM Birds, I really have not paid any attention to what is out there FM bird wise. But this past Field Day we had this 14 year old kid stop in at our Field Day site. He's newly licensed Tech, ( January got his ticket ), He sat down in front of the HF radio and listened for ohh ten minutes or so, we then offered him a chance to run the logger. And he did Great! We were running a Freq on 15 meters at the moment, and then asked him if he would want to try getting on the radio, and he said sure. We explained the exchange and QSO pattern of what to say and when and all that. And said go for it! He was Incredible! Almost from the start he was Running the Freq like a veteran pro! The off freq SSB sigs never even fazed him at all. Even pileups he handled perfectly. I was very impressed. For someone that has never been on HF or even heard it before, it was like he was doing this for decades! He would "QRZed Field Day" And he'd grab a call out of the pile, never write it down or anything and go back to them with the exchange and all that. Monitoring the QSO rate meter, he for the two hours he played, he was running an average 90 QSO's a hour rate! Incredible for someone that has never ever been on HF ever before! After he got off I talked to him a bunch and learned that he got his license because he read someplace about Amateur Radio and how we can talk through Satellites all our own. Right now all he has is a Baeofeng BF-F8HP, so not much of a Sat radio there,, BUT.... I want to give him a list of FM birds to at least listen for, and Elmer him into some of the prediction software's and or web pages.
