New AO7 world distance record

I am pleased to report that Wyatt AC0RA and I broke the AO7 world record today with a GPS-measured 7849km QSO between JN88 and EN31 at 0955Z. Recordings of the 40 second QSO will be posted to my web page, see www.qsl.net/nz5n (I tried to attach but it seems attachments not allowed on this board). Wyatt did all the hard work by waking up at 3am, driving to a hill an hour away from his home, setting up his station, and working me before sunrise. It appears that an even longer distance is attainable, and Wyatt is looking for a suitable place from which we can try before I leave Slovakia in mid-July. My working conditions are an FT847, 2 x 10 element yagi on 2m with SP2000 preamp, and an 8 element yagi for 70cm. Feel free to email me for a sked. 73, Bill OM3BD NZ5N

Greetings from Hot and Humid North Texas, As I am sure everyone has heard, Ed Long, WA4SWJ is retiring from his duties as editor of the AMSAT Journal. Ed has done an outstanding job providing the AMSAT membership with a quality publication for over 8 years and we all owe him a debt of gratitude. Effective with the next issue of the Journal I will be assuming the responsibilities as Editor of the AMSAT Journal. Ed will be a hard act to follow, but I will do my best to continue to meet the high standards he has set in producing AMSAT's flagship publication. To those of you who have already contributed articles and other material, thank you very much. I am very appreciative of your support. There will always be a need for material to publish in the Journal. My experience with AMSAT dates back to the mid 70s and I recall previous editors of the Journal constantly expressing their need for material and in today's Internet based world where information instantaneously flows freely around the globe, the Journal, as with other publications, is constantly competing for material. So please keep our flagship publication in mind and I can assure you that any material you would care to submit would be greatly appreciated. If you don't have experience in writing an article, don't be intimidated - I'm new at this too! So, we will learn together. On the other hand AMSAT has many members with technical or academic backgrounds with lots of experience writing articles and papers. I urge these folks to share material with us as well. One of the great things about AMSAT is the opportunity for all of us to be exposed to interesting topics related to our hobby and science in general and to constantly learn about a wide variety of immensely interesting topics often times from leading experts in their fields. Publishing a quality publication is hard work, much like building a satellite itself, it requires a team working together to insure that the publication reaches the membership in a timely manner which contains informative and useful content. In my view the Journal should address a number of topics on a regular basis. These topics include: Organizational news Spacecraft Engineering Topics Spacecraft Operational Topics (Command and Control, mission analysis etc,) Spacecraft Utilization (What's on the birds, what are we learning?) Hands-On Projects for ground station applications Educational News Amateur Radio Astronomy EME High Altitude Balloon Flights General Space Science Topics. I am sure there are others, and if you have ideas, please let me know. To best serve the members, I would like to enlist the services of individuals who would be willing to serve as a column coordinators for each of the topics identified above. All too often, the folks building the spacecraft, raising the money to build them and running the organization itself are the same people that end up writing material for the Journal. While some of this is to be expected, these folks are already highly tasked and as we say in Texas "we need a few more horses to pull the wagon". Please consider volunteering to be a member of the AMSAT Journal publication team. Your contribution would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to contact me with your ideas and suggestions. insulated mast??

Just a curious question. I know the insulated el. boom subject has been beat to death. I happen to have five, 5 foot fiberglass boom sections. Is it worthwhile using one for the mast?? Does anyone know offhand whether the "guts" of any particular past or present Yaesu rotor are a direct replacement for those of a G-5400B azimuth rotor? I sent mine to Yaesu for an overhaul, and they returned it saying parts were no longer available... George, KA3HSW

Field Day site-to-site texting

Every FD site will usually have APRS on line. Remember, you can contact any other FD site in the world on your APRS channel. (144.39 in North America). Just send them an APRS text message. Of course, this assumes you know their callsign. To facilitate learning who else is on the air, send a CQ FD message to the APRS CQSERVER and your CQ will go to every other CQ FD site on the planet. This has nothing to do with FD rules and points. It is just a way to have fun and be able to contact any FD site without knowing apriori their calling freq. Just send an APRS message to CQSRVR and make the first two words of the message be CQ FD .... for example, "CQ FD from Bob in Annapolis, MD". These do not count for points, but are a great way to have ham radio fun with other sites. This will log you onto the CQ FD message group and from then on, you will get ALL OTHER such messages from all other such stations. When you DO see an incoming CQ FD message, now then you know their callsign and can MESSAGE THEM DIRECTLY from then on. To keep the load down, you can only send one CQ FD message once every 30 minutes, but you will remain logged on for up to 12 hours. After no activity, you will be dropped. FM LEO sats on Field Day - A unique perspective

On Saturday, I was at around 2600-3200 ft elevation going through Skyline Drive in Northern Virginia. I hadn't planned on working any satellite passes since I was a portable station and not participating in Field Day, but I stopped to listen to two AO-27 passes in the afternoon. The first pass, I was facing the west side of the mountains. Amazingly, I heard 4 stations trying to get into AO-27 on the uplink. I was hearing them direct on 145.85. The funny thing is, not one of them ever was picked up by AO-27. Secondly, 2 of the 4 stations kept giving their callsign over and over from AOS to LOS, even with AO-27 being on a seven minute timer. This tells me a couple of things: 1. They don't know how AO-27 operates and 2. They apparently weren't listening to the bird. I tried calling two of the strongest stations on 145.85 after the pass, thinking they might be listening. Nope. I never heard a response. Makes me wonder how many people leave the volume up on the uplink side of their setup (if running full duplex.) The second pass, I was pleased to hear several "5 land" stations making contacts through the madness. However, I heard several different stations on the uplink. This time it was the usual variety of "hello hello hello" and "test 1 2 3." Again, I was hearing this trash all on the uplink 145.85... The sad part is, I never heard a callsign. It sounded like 2-3 different stations trying than on the first pass. I realize the satellite hears a lot more crap than I could ever hear at 3200 feet, but it was a very interesting perspective I've not encountered before. I have been in areas when other stations (local) were on the birds, but this is different -- one of the stations I heard on the uplink was 200+ miles away. 73 Clayton W5PFG

Hi all & thanks Bernard, If you follow up the report in view of the costs and other factors. One of the options for an ATV future was for a use of recovery of debris and satellites. Whilst the cost may be considerably high for such a development, I thought that it would be very interesting and a positive step forward for study of failure and ageing factors of on board equipment etc. (Batteries ??) Also of course the objective of clearing up and reducing hazards of possible impact or pollution. Hello All I will be operating on the FD using my own call sign and "1E DX" I plan to concentrate on the linear satellites and I'll try to make my 1 QSO on AO-27, SO-50 and ISS digipeater. I will be able also to operate on FO-29 and SO-50 during the late night and early morning passes. I think that It is a great opportunity to encourage the amateur radio by satellites in my Radio Club, So I have invited a lot satellite enthusiasts to my home to listen the satellite operation. It is my first Field Day on the linear birds and I know that it will be very fun as It is said that during Field Day the transponders come alive like 20 meters on a weekend. Hi Philip, Happy to hear you are getting active again! Great. One small precaution, based on personal experience during Field Day---be careful about creating expectations that can't be delivered...in other words, using the handheld system to listen to an FM bird is pretty easy, but on Field Day, it might be impossible to get a signal into the bird for a real contact. When I've done demos on Field Day, I warn my observers that it's going to be quite busy, and while we certainly will hear the bird, it's unlikely with 5 watts that I'll make a contact *today*. But letting them hear the busy bird gets them interested, and has led to invitations to give a presentation/demo at a local club meeting---which CAN more easily lead to making some contacts (especially if you announce the event here on the BBS. People will look for you specifically, in order to make your event successful). If you're going to have both the TS-2000x and the little radio, you could have somebody else waving it around to listen, while you operate the transmitter. It's fun to have audience participation! For Field Day, I will be looking to help out with contacts, Especially late at night, I chase grids so I am used to being up late at night on the "lonely" passes. I plan to concentrate on the linear satellites but SO50 is flying over the US late at night so I will try it as well. those that are planning to try a satellite contact for the points drop me a private email and I will listen for you in the wee hours, I have already had several requests from some of the other night owls like myself, so let me know so I can be listening. Just give me a general idea of which passes you are looking at I am sure I can work a few stations! Phillip, You have already gotten really good advice from others on FD operation, but I will offer one nugget from my experience: if you feel the pressure to make that one satellite contact for the club, here is my recommendation for the highest probability for success: - pick an ascending pass of FO-29, preferably to your East (at AOS it will be mostly over the Atlantic Ocean) - pick a frequency at least 5 kHz above the center's downlink with Doppler (at AOS this will be about 8 + 5 = 435.863 MHz) - assuming you are not using PC-control, set your trasnmit 5 kHz below the uplink center and call CQ - be ready for the pile-up from the dozen 4-call stations in FL who will all call you at the same time You have about 60 seconds before the NE and mid-west get into the window... after that, just play the downlink audio for the audience. 73 es GL, Jerry, K5OE

Hi all I'm doing satellite demos for Field Day for my club, and I'm trying to narrow down which ones to try. I'd like to demo two of each type, even if all the audience is able to do it listen. So please let me know which FM and which linear ones you would recommend. For FM: SO-50, AO-27, and ISS (assuming that it will be on at all, either in repeater mode or even better, a real live operator :-) ) For linear: VO-52, FO-29, and AO-7 I'm leaning towards AO-27 for listen only, as I know the bird will be jam packed with ops that weekend (although I do have a decent pass at 230 am local Sunday, and an even better one at 4 am) and actually trying to make a contact on SO-50, although I'm sure it will be busy too. Definitely AO-7 for my linear choice, as I know the linear birds won't be as busy as the FM ones. FO-29 is my next choice. I'm planning on using the Arrow antenna with my VX5-R for the FM birds, and I have an M-Squared 2M/440 (same boom, but offset 90 degrees) with an "armstrong" az/el control for the linear ones with my TS-2000X. (I'll also have a longwire on the off chance that AO-7 pops up in Mode A, as I may be working 20 M phone/CW when not busy with the sats.) Any advice will be appreciated Thanks! Hello AMSAT, I wish to make an inquiry to those AMSAT members that might also be active on ATV. There is a group of us who each morning get on the air starting around 7:30 to exchange "live" ATV on 439.25 MHz. Our contacts are coordinated on 3930 KHz. For several mornings this week we've had some very strong openings getting P5 pictures consistently over distances up to about 180 miles. Some of the stations involved are WB8LGA, Marengo. OH, W8URI, Mt Gilead,OH, KA8MFD Edison, OH, W8RVH, Springfield. OH, KB8GUE Leesburg, OH, WA9EEI Taylorsville, IN, and W4HTB, Bowling Green, KY. By checking the local Nexrad Radars we note extensive ground clutter with extended reflections beyond, which we believe relates to a propagation mechanism contributed by very hot days and cool nights. . This morning there were similar patterns on Pittsburg, Pa, State College, Pa and Buffalo, NY Nexrads. We wish to appeal to ATV stations especially in these locations and even further East and to the West to be on the lookout for ATV DX to the West.. Please give us a call on 3930. SkyCube CubeSat Proposes "Tweets from Space"

The funding concept of this CubeSat is $1 will sponsor 10 seconds of the mission and what you get for that 10 seconds is the ability to broadcast a message from space, “effectively tweet from space”. It uses a balloon de-orbit mechanism. Hi Tom, I have managed to use the HRD sat tracking program to 'remotely' control my Foxdelta 'copy' of Howards LVB interface, you will need a 'local' PC hooked up to the interface though. Run the HRDDDESattrack server on the machine hooked up to the antenna, along with the HRD rotator software - set HRD to use Nova DDE. On the machine you want to use to control the antenna, run HRD Satellite tracker (I guess you may be able to use Nova, or another bit of software that will use the DDE interface) - in HRD Sat Tracker on this machine, select DDE server, then select the remote server tab, enter the IP address of the machine and your password to send the DDE date to the PC hooked up to the rotator. Bit of a tricky setup that took me a few hours to suss out, but it works. Alternatively something like this may do the job (driver software will create a 'virtual' serial port on your PC):- http://www.perle.com/products/IOLAN-DS-Terminal-Server.shtml Have seen a few expensive ones, but your mileage may vary. I have been looking for information on using the TCP interface on the LVB Tracker. The AMSAT-UK store lists the board http://shop.amsat.org.uk/shop/article_8/LVB-Traker-USB_TCP-Interface-bare-P… but the US AMSAT store does not carry it. I have been a user of PocketSat since its old Palm PDA version (still supported, BTW!). It has since been updated/upgraded to PocketSat3 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - and there's an Android version, too. The "OSCAR News" review was, IMHO, a little weird. "Too many options," the reviewer wrote. For me, it is a simple program to use, and painless to update the Keps of my choice. I can go to any date and easily search for passes of the sats I am interested in. Both a "radar" map and a Earth view map is viewable. Of all the apps in that review, the author does note, "... [PocketSat] has the best web site for support, including a manual." For me, support is important. And being able to contact the program author with questions and ideas - and receiving timely replies - is valuable to me. Of the 300+ apps of all categories that I have downloaded/purchased for my iOS devices, PocketSat3 was the most expensive - at $25. When I consider the ease of use, the feature set, the available author, and the support message group that you get for that one-time fee, I have absolutely no reservations recommending PocketSat to all. In general, all use is routine except for special circumstances. Typical Special usage is for demonstra- tions, and long term events. Priority usage may be for VIP demos or special one-time events. Use good judgment, being fair to all other usrs. perfect groundtrack contest

I vote for Intelsat G-11 at 304.5 deg E. This is a Ku band only bird, however, the semi-retired Intelsat 805, which is co-located with this sat has a global C band beam with a downlink that extends into the amateur 9cm satellite band (3400-3410 MHz). I often wondered if Intelsat would consider "donating" a few Khz to AMSAT. We could then tie a single, commercially licensed uplink station via echolink and hear it on the 9cm downlink. At least it would be a reason for people to use the 9cm band before it's taken away for the latest mobile broadband gizmo. Howie AB2S
