Just over a decade ago Peleg 4X1GP gave a good presentation to the annual AMSAT-UK Colloquium in Guildford that pointed out that OFDM was the way ahead for Amateur communications. Well 10 years later the first OFDM Amateur transceivers have been announced. Doodle Labs have announced a range of 64 QAM OFDM Transceivers for the Amateur bands above 420 MHz. The 420 MHz transceivers feature speeds of up to 12 Mbps and bandwidths of 10 MHz or 5 MHz, while data throughput of 48 Mbps is claimed on the 1240 MHz verssion. KB7ADL --------------- RELEASE: 11-370 NASA AND SPACE FLORIDA SMALL SATELLITE RESEARCH CENTER PARTNER IN SPACE LAUNCH CHALLENGE WASHINGTON -- NASA has signed an agreement with the Space Florida Small Satellite Research Center of Cape Canaveral, Florida, to manage the Nano-Satellite Launch Challenge, one of the agency's new Centennial Challenges prize competitions. The Nano-Satellite Launch Challenge is to launch satellites with a mass of at least 2.2 pounds (1 kg) into Earth orbit, twice within the span of one week. The new challenge has a NASA-provided prize purse of $2 million. The objective of the competition is to encourage innovations in propulsion and other technologies, as well as operations and management relevant to safe, low-cost, small payload delivery system for frequent access to Earth orbit. Innovations stemming from this challenge will be beneficial to broader applications in future launch systems. They may enhance commercial capability for dedicated launches of small satellites at a cost comparable to secondary payload launches -- a potential new market with government, commercial, and academic customers. "Monday's agreement between NASA and Space Florida for use of facilities at the Kennedy Space Center even better positions the organization for managing this new Nano-Satellite Launch Challenge," said Michael Gazarik, director for NASA's Space Technology Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Space Florida has extensive experience working with NASA, the FAA, the Air Force, commercial spaceflight companies and universities to advance their plans for spaceflight operations. We look forward to having the Space Florida Small Satellite Research Center overseeing the competition and bringing together innovative teams with creative problem-solving ideas." Space Florida submitted a proposal last spring in response to a NASA solicitation for this partnership opportunity. They will now begin detailed preparations for the challenge, publishing rules and then registering competitors. The first competition launch attempt is expected to take place in the summer of 2012. The Centennial Challenges seek unconventional solutions to problems of interest to NASA and the nation. Competitors have included private companies, student groups and independent inventors working outside the traditional aerospace industry. Unlike contracts or grants, prizes are awarded only after solutions are successfully demonstrated. NASA's Centennial Challenges program provides the prize purse for the technology and innovation competitions. The competitions are managed by non-profit organizations that cover the cost of operations through commercial or private sponsorships. In October, NASA awarded the largest prize in aviation history following Pipistrel-USA's win of the agency's CAFE Green Flight Challenge, sponsored by Google. NASA's $1.35 million first prize and a $120,000 second prize recognized competitors using electric airplanes to break all previous fuel efficiency records. The technology and innovation used in electric aircraft may end up in general aviation aircraft, spawning new jobs and new industries for the 21st century. There have been 22 Centennial Challenges competition events since 2005. NASA has awarded nearly $6 million to 15 different challenge-winning teams. Anthony, Thank you for giving us a better perspective on what it is like to be involved in these sorts of projects. I, for one, really appreciate all you guys do and I am having a blast trying to track and decode the telemetry. I have not been very successful but one is never too old to learn, and I am learning a lot. What little free time we have we spend in research labs instead of watching TV, or drinking. We spend a lot of that time trying to keep the project funded to a level that allows us to continue. We are very aware of how much it costs to construct a station to track satellites, and to build the satellites, and to launch the satellites. If we are able to bring in any extra money we spend that right back into the students we have putting 20 hours a week that they could and probably should spend on something outside of school. We devote years into these little boxes of electronics, in the hope that it will someday fly in space. We reach out and connect with other students doing the same thing, we congratulate them for their successes, and console them on their losses. I personally was up all night watching this latest launch as one of the cubes (E1P) was to have been launch on the Glory mission in march which failed to reach orbit. It is now on orbit and doing fine, M-Cubed however seams to be having issues and I will track it every chance I get to help that team understand what is going on. I got into nano-satellites by first being a HAM, and if I have my way anything I put into orbit will be switched over to a BBS, APRS digi, or even voice repeater when the scientific mission is done. That time may not come in the operational life span of the satellite and it is very important that it complete the mission that someone has generously paid for. If nothing else then I hope what I learn from this endeavor will serve to further the collective understanding of something. I attend a state school as a student of Mechanical Engineering, I have been dumpster diving for parts, I carry two rolls of duct tape, I find a hammer can fix many problems, I have spent hours building things to replace tools I either cannot afford, or cannot afford to wait for. The moral is that these aren't multi-million dollar projects with blank checks, these are shoestring operations that have to take things one step at a time. If you don't want to help out the next generation of aerospace engineers and rocket scientists that's up to you. We won't turn down help, but many of us have grown to expect nothing from anyone. We will build a ladder so we can through our satellite into orbit if we have to. Thanks Anthony for some perspective that some of us really need. If anything there needs to be tighter cooperation between the general AMSAT community and the universities, and less of this adversarial nastiness and "gimme" mentality. The Fox program is trying to address some of these issues by providing the spacecraft bus and repeater (or transponder in Fox-2), and room for an experiment from a partner university. We hope the experiment and university partnership gets us a low-cost launch, and the university gets a ground network and reliable comms system. AMSAT gets an on-orbit asset after, and probably during, the experiment part of the mission. Satellite Demonstration

Hi Andras, I totaly agree with your point. To turn the "rudder" a little bit more into ham radio dx direction I designed several years ago a small CubeSat sized linear transponder. (Just google "LE005-R2" and you will find it). The idea was to make it off the shelve available for the Cubes, as it is quiet complex to design for students. Surprisingly the interrest from these Cube groups was/is very very low. (Most requests are from privat hams ! for using it on a mountains or balloon). CubeSat groups seem to prefer FM, AX25, and not to much difficult ssb stuff they can not use and test themselves. Most of these small sats are under the name off education, but in the background a huge business sector is available (just google "Cubesat shop" and enjoy). Because of this I believe the AMSATs none-profit status is a huge disadvantage, and it is very hard to get a HEO into orbit. AMSAT should have kept the RF payload (of a big satellite), and give away some spaces to universities, sharing the ham radio payload. Now the spaces are given away as separate small boxes (cubesats) that all have similar RF systems (FM and 1k2/9k6 AX25). Why not assemble the cubes all together as one big satellite, where AMSAT provides the common digital download payload + some extra linear transponder ??? In this way there is more space for university experiments, and the RF is done by people who have many experience in amateurs satellite radios. But best of all is that we have our own payload added. (Some less frequencies then AO40 but possibly in a MEO/HEO). RAX-2

Using Object C, E, and F, I did hear RAX-2 this morning but could not copy the data. Since I do not have an external TNC, I used the TS-2000 internal TNC. For those who have the TS-2000, I set Menu 46=Main; Menu 47=9600 bps; Menu 48=TNC Band; and Menu 55=On. I then used HyperTerm to connect to the TNC and did a RESET. I turned Kiss=On, Mon=On, MCON=On, and MCOM=On. I disconnected from Hyperterm and ran RAX_Serial_to_TCP.bat; I then ran RAX_GS_Client.bat. The Summary Panel is being displayed and I received not errors from either BAT file. I have the Mode set to FM on 437.345 MHz. I had to manually tune (from 5 KHz above to 5 KHz below the center frequency during the pass) since the TNC is using the COM port negating any CAT control. As I said before, I am seeing a very strong signal on my S-meter about every 20 secs. Since 9.6K sound much like noise, I can not really distinguish the data from the noise. Anyone have a suggestions as to why I am not displaying data? -- *Carl W8KRF*

To show you how uncertain this whole thing is---this morning I went to Space-Track and got a set of keps for these birds. Most were dated with "day 304". Just now, I went for another "fresh" set--they had gone back to "day 303" and when compared to the previous set from early this morning, and all the AOS times are about 2-3 minutes different! ARRISat-1 Linear Transponder

ARRISat-1 continues to function although the signal from orbit to orbit is quite different. On the previous pass at 2135z 30 Oct, I could barely hear my downlink. I was hearing W8ZCF and he heard at least part of my call. On the next pass at 2309z, the transponder was strong and I was able to hear my downlink until the bird went silent at 2313z just before it eclipsed. A good contact was made with K9OIM. I guess it all depends on the angle with respect to the stubby uhf antenna. ARRISat-1 does go off even when it is in good sunlight. Then when it looks like it is just barely getting enough sun, the bird stays on and the signal is strong. You just never know what it is going to do. 73, John K8YSE

I am pleased to report that Burns, W2BFJ heard me but he was on temporary power and could not respond to Tx.. I heard a station calling, believe was call ending "YSE" but my Rx was off due to doppler and it was at end of pass. I will be trying again Oct 31., 17:08, 18:43, 20:20 and 21:56 using LSB on Tx. 73, Thanks to all others who might have tried to Tx or Rx. Charge for Satellite Tracking? (Kevin Gordon)

This would open a lot of legal considerations in the US with respect to prohibition for remuneration for amateur radio services. The argument can be made that if a station is only serving to RECEIVE transmissions, then the data gathering for hire may be legal, irrespective if the satellite were using amateur, scientific or commercial frequencies. This is because reception is not regulated by the FCC. If the station were to tele-command the satellite on amateur frequencies, then transmissions would be for hire and thus prohibited. The bigger issue is one of politics and cooperation. Serving as a no cost service has the political benefit of potentially "getting a ride" which has a bigger monetary benefit that providing an earth station for hire. Of course there is the possibility of constructing a global network to benefit a start up like SPACE-X on a quasi-commercial basis that could include a ride along agreement. Hi all, Apologies for mailing this information rather late. Only found this time this evening to pass on the inforamtion. I was monitoring the UHF frequencies allocate to the recent ELENA Cubesats over here in Wales (UK) this morning 1142 - 1156 hrs GMT. I heard packet data quite strong on the frequency allocated to Explorer -1 - It was quite healthy but I had not set anything to record or decode the data. Charge for Satellite Tracking?

If a satellite does not provide amateur radio services, why not charge for satellite tracking? We could at least ask for a fixed amount per satellite as a donation to our amateur radio satellite fund in lieu of tracking services. Thousands of satellites will be placed in orbit in the coming years. We must lay claim to our share of orbit space by placing satellites in orbit. Just a thought! Kevin zl1bgk

Thank you Domenico. You understood my email exactly. Today Universities are commerical. Universities and other Commerical organisations need world wide reporting services and data collection ("tracking") of satellites. Only with regard to satellites should Amateur Radio (i.e. AMSAT) change its traditional stance ("We are NOT a commercial entity and exist because of our traditional support of emergency related situations and our experimental nature"). Free ambulance services request a donation. Minimum FCD setup to detect Arissat-1 bpsk?

This afternoon using a Fubcube Dongle I detected the arissat-1 spectrum on 145.920 as the transmision doppled across. I've screendumped it as evidence! The signal was weak but visible (and audible) and rapid as you would expect at the nominal frequency. I used FCHiD to set the frequency and HDSDR to demod it at usb. I owe it all to my homebrew one-transistor untuned preamp (RSGB's VHF-UHF handbook) at the end of a 6 ele XY fixed in az/el. It didn't decode at the tlm software though, and I'll try again next weekend using DK3WN's doppler control software. However I am pleased I have detected arissat1 bpsk with a FCD - that's one small step... 73 de andy g0sfj

This year's "Proceedings of the AMSAT-NA Space Symposium and Annual Meeting", which is provided to every Symposium attendee contains 21 papers and is over 250 pages in length. While not all papers will be presented, there are also several presentations scheduled to be presented where the material was not finished in time for publication. Along with the outstanding materials presented, Symposium offers a great opportunity to meet the AMSAT leadership (the Board of Directors members as well as Senior Officers), other satellite enthusiasts, and interact with our volunteers who are involved with our engineering projects. The single channel transponder will operate in a similar way to AO-16. The uplink on 145.900 MHz will be FM and the downlink on 435.020MHz will use the BPSK telemetry beacon transmitter to produce Double Sideband (DSB) that can be received on an SSB radio. PW-Sat will be launched into a 300 by 1450km 69.5 degree orbit and may be expected to have a lifetime of about 2 years before re-entry. RAX-2 Decoding

I have installed the RAX-2 decoding software hoping to be able to copy and decode the telemetry. I am using a TS-2000 with a SignaLink USB and AGWPE as the TNC. I am not able to get the software to recognize this set up. I have AGWPE setup in Kiss Simple mode at 9600 Baud. (I use the SignaLink with the ARISSATTLM software and it works fine.) Can anyone tell me if this setup will work with the RAX-2 software? If so, what am I not doing or doing wrong? Thanks and 73, -- *Carl W8KRF*

pardon my caps lock on my post, I thought I was on the AO51 afternoon pass and I was yelling at the bird! in reference to the "lapsed" call heard on AO-51: Apparently several people heard/worked the station in question, the lapse could be an oversight or someone picked up this persons call. Based on what I heard the operator had been around the satellites previously. Maybe some one around him locally can ask him if he knows that the call has lapsed. The old FCC data base had him located in Alabama and he was giving out a grid locator of EL98, maybe he moved and lost track of his renewal date. We can give him the benefit of doubt until some one can ask if he knows that the license is shown as lapsed and recommend that he cease operation until he clears it up, altho' at the speed of government now-a-days that could be a while! well I said previously that was my two cents worth I guess i'm up to a nickle now!

They're in the final hold, weather is awesome and everything looks good to go for the 0948 UTC launch. Much like RAX-1, RAX-2 will have an Amateur Radio beacon spitting out 500mW of 9600 baud GMSK every 20 seconds from it's right handed circularly polarized antenna... Such a spunky lil bird... Hi Roger, I think only 8 of the OrbComm satellites are on 137.56.. It sounds like it may be worth contacting OrbComm though- I'll give them a call. I 'm not using a beam presently - using a 360deg parasitic Lindenblad for circular polarisation, but it is susceptible to all the high power pager stuff nearby. 70 MPH S-band dish

Besides the occasional MDS dishes, is there a source now of larger commercial 2.4 GHz wire or mesh dishes? We want to outfit a van with a 4' dish for Balloon Tracking live downlink video and not have it blow off the roof at 70 MPH. I'm considering changing over many of our student projects to high altitude "cubesats" that can be completed in one semester and actually LAUNCHED (by balloons), as opposed to the occasional once every 3 or 4 year satellite missions which spend more time in bureaucracy than engineering for the students. I just worked an AO-51 pass at 1957UTC and had a contact with N4HML at EL98. I am unable to find this call sign in the QRZ database. In the FCC database, that call is registered to PRESCOTT JR, RICHARD H and the status is Expired 02/27/2007 and Canceled 02/28/2009. So, either the FCC is wrong or we have a bootlegger on the sats. Satellite QSO's and LoTW

Morning all, I was curious what the standard was for Logbook of the World (LoTW) reporting. Which band do you log your QSO with, Uplink or Downlink? I've been seeing mix results coming back via LoTW, where HRD Log defaults to using the downlink frequency although I've had some QSO's report back using the uplink. Hi Thomas, Somewhere in the year 2001 I have also been busy with this oscarlator system. It is very interresting and works quiet well, when you have some experience in using it. It looks outdated, but for ham radio it is good enough, and the most advantage is that is does not use power, cables or fragile parts/software. Before upgrading your SatPC32 installation, be sure to use the new program (in the ZIP file) to backup your user configuration. The upgrade erases all previous user configurations, but the new program will restore your configurations after upgrading. The download is a demo version that requires users to enter their lat/lon each time the program is started. Send me a direct email and we can arrange something. I had read that there is a 148.000 MHz transmitter on board prospero, and I listend to that frquentie during the pass from 15:55 UTC. Maybe it is interesting what is happening on that transmitter. AO-27/SO-50

I am new to satellites as of this weekend. I have worked AO-51 three times with much success. SO-50 I can hear off and on, but I am having trouble raising it. As for AO-27, I had a nice daytime direct overhead pass and heard nothing. I am using a yeasu g-5500 rotator with the AMSAT controller and ham radio deluxe. Kenwood ts-2000 for the rig and a 8 element 440 and a 4 element 2 meter antenna. The antennas are currently linear polarized since my phasing cables still have not arrived from the manufacturer. My questions are, is AO-27 difficult to work? Is it on a schedule? Any ideas why I could not raise or hear it? As for SO-50: Should I be listening 5khz down? Ham radio deluxe is controlling the radio frequencies and I made a custom entry for 5khz down and corrected for Doppler. This still did not seem to help. Richard K7LWV

Hello all, Just a little question. Is the Prospero downlink active only after recieved command from ground station or it should be active world wide? I would like to try recieve any signal but not sure if it will be transmitting over Cuba and the Caribbean.
