SatPC32 and Nova both support Flip mode directly. Just follow the instructions within the programs on how to do the set up. 73, Charlie AJ9N In a message dated 9/4/2011 1:28:05 P.M. Central Daylight Time, wa4ivm(a)amsat.org writes: I believe the G5400 is a 360 degree rotor control. If you are wanting to go from West through North to East, you will hit the stop. Two options come to mind. Put the stop at South, but this gives the same problem going from West to East though South. The second option is a program like FLIPANTS that turns the antenna on it's back and turns the Az control plus/minus 180 so that the stop is not a problem. Decide if the "through North" or "through South" will become a problem and make a choice, then use the software to overcome it. Flipants is a old DOS program, but I think you can find an equivalent available. Adjusting true north for azimuth rotator.

I am planning to install my G5400 rotator inside a tower having a welded rotator shelf. The tower is not installed yet and will have one face against the side of my house which is positioned about 28 degrees northeast (Per Google Earth). I assume when I drill the rotator shelf, I can adjust for the gross 28 degree offset of the tower. However how important is it to do this at all? Does the rotator have to be installed exactly toward true north or can I make up the difference when clamping down the antenna mast assuming the antenna is oriented true north? Note I will be using a Trakbox and need the ADC to center on true north. Secondly does anyone know if the ruler function in Google Earth points true north? Thanks to all who replied. When I last installed the rotator, I had a free standing tower and I pored the foundation and mounting bolts such that one leg was aligned true north. In this new case, the tower face will have to be against a wall and that wall as I mentioned is +28 degrees from north. The consensus is that the azimuth rotator case can be oriented in any direction and the antenna's (and elevation rotator separation kit) be clamped to the top of the rotator aligned to true north. What I can't sort out is if I will hit a stop if I rotate full CW or CCW, before reaching the south direction. The comments seem to imply I won't. IARU AC Meeting Summary

The IARU administative council meeting took place in Sun City on August 19-20 and the summary has now been released. The Amateur Satellite Service is mentioned in several places. Among them is the expansion of the 70cm CubeSat segment: "6.3. Owing to his presence in Sun City for the regional conference, IARU Satellite Adviser Hans van de Groenendaal, ZS6AKV, presented his report in person and supplemented his report with oral remarks. He mentioned that educational institutional satellites using amateur radio frequencies were increasing. The Satellite Advisory Panel has expanded the CubeSat band from 437.305 – 437.505 MHz by 100 kHz to 437.605 while taking into account certain ARISS preferred slots. He mentioned the opportunity to convert the CubeSats to amateur usage upon completion of the educational institutional experimental usage and in this way anticipated more satellite availability for the amateur-satellite service." The minutes of the Final Plenary of the IARU Region 1 meeting held in Sun City have now been released. Among the satellite releated items are: SC11_C3_Rec _02 – Document SC11_C3_37a To add to the constitution A.1.3.11 Protection of the fundamental, natural and finite resource “frequency spectrum,” to keep it clean and undisturbed from man-made electromagnetic disturbances causing harmful interference to the amateur service and the amateur satellite service. SC11_C5_Rec_10 - SC11_C5_16 D-Star in Italy using SAT-Band Escalation Procedure: 1. Write the repeater operator to remove out of satellite segment. 2. Inform the trust server operator of the IARU bandplan breach made by the use of the repeater. 3. Inform the government about the repeater and request them to remove the repeater. Proposed by OeVSV, seconded by REF. Approved unanimously. SC11_C5_Rec_23 - SC11_C5_44 VHF Handbook Satellite Chapter Removal of the existing Satellite chapter and replace with the attachment of paper 44. FUNcube will carry a UHF to VHF linear transpon- der that will have up to 1 watt and which can be used by Radio Ama- teurs worldwide for SSB and CW communications. Measuring just 10 x 10 x 10 cm, and with a mass of less than 1kg, it will be the smallest ever satellite to carry a linear transponder It will support the educational Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives and provide an additional resource for the GB4FUN Mobile Communications Centre. The target audience consists of primary and secondary school pupils and FUNcube will feature a 145 MHz telemetry beacon that will provide a strong signal for the pupils to receive. The FUNcube Dongle connects to the USB port of a laptop to display telemetry and messages in an interesting way for students. September 4, 2011 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-247.08 The International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) Region 1 meeting in Sun City, South Africa this week noted that several Italian repeaters are currently causing on-going interference to satellite uplinks and down- links in the Amateur Satellite Service segment from 145.8-146.0 MHz. While the IARU R1 decision stressed the importance of the satellite service they also noted that coordination is needed to continue to introduce new modes. The IARU R1 C5 committee report recommended that the D-STAR repeaters/nodes that continue operation in contra- diction to the IARU-R1 band plans be disconnected from the inter- national D_STAR network. September 4, 2011 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-247.09 The European Space Agency reported that its August 16 test to re- pressurize gas tanks aboard their Proba-2 spacecraft were successful. Proba-2 was launched on 2 November 2009. Less than a cubic metre in volume, it carries a total of 17 new technologies and four science payloads focused on the Sun and space weather. According to the ESA, Proba-2 uses a 'resistojet' engine to maintain the microsatellite's orbit at 600 km altitude. This experimental en- gine runs on xenon gas heated before ejection to provide added thrust. Laurens van Vliet of Dutch research organisation TNO, which developed the technology explained, "What makes this repressurisation unique is that the added gas was not stored in a pressurised state but produced from a solid material at room temperature, the first of four 'cool-gas generators' on Proba-2. Nitrogen, like xenon, is an inert, non-react- ive gas, so the resistojet can work just as well with a xenon-nitrogen mixture." The bottle-shaped cool-gas generators are filled with a rigid solid material that, once triggered, produces more than 250 times its own volume in pure nitrogen gas. The other three generators will be used later in Proba-2's orbital lifetime. Pocket- Qubs are 5 cm cubes and can literally fit in a pocket. The PocketQub leverages the CubeSat standard and the revolution in the miniaturiza- tion of electronics. PocketQubs will ultimately have a wide range of applications including: Network Nodes, Sensor Systems, Satellite Con- stellations, Inexpensive, Redundant, and Spatially Organized Earth Remote Sensing Platforms. Morehead State University's Space Science Center (SSC) and Kentucky Space collaborated with the University of Rome Sapienza Aerospace Engineering School on a series of student-driven educational satel- lite projects. The goal was for students to develop, build and fly a series of four satellites (EduSat, UNISAT-5, UNISAT-6, and UNI- SAT-7). These satellites were built in Rome and in Morehead and controlled from MSU by students using the big dish antenna and by Italian students using satellite ground assets in Europe. EduSat was launched in August, 2011 by a Russian Dnepr rocket from a silo. During its first 30-days on orbit, EduSat will test an orb- ital deployer designed to release the PocketQub, also called a femto- class satellite. While the femtosats will not be released on the first mission, the deployment system that will ultimately deploy them will be tested. A follow-on mission in 2012 (UNISAT-5) will deploy four femto-class satellites when they are ejected from the UNISAT-5 "mothership" at apogee. You and I both are at about 5 degrees west declination. That's almost "in the noise" with any normal VHF or UHF array, and not much above the accuracy of the rotor. Most compasses are marked no better than 3 degrees per tick mark. bye bye S band

Before the weather gets bad I am planning of "redoing" a lot of antennas. As part of that process the satellite antennas are to be moved. At which time I plan to remove the S band system that worked so magnificently on AO-40 (sobsob) and a little bit on AO-51. With AO-51 declining the probability of S band activity is remote. Why am I floating this on the bb? To me it appears to be a turning point of what I (we) would like to do and what I (we) can do. Smarter people than I have said it will be a long time before we can really have some L/S activity. So rather than wear out my rotors turning some useless hardware I will put it in "mothballs". It does not address the issue of FM repeaters in the satellite segment but repeaters such as IR0CK (node 488822) depend on being allowed to connect to the Echolink server which I believe is run from the United States. I do not know who owns the US Echolink server or what their policy is on providing connections for nodes that deliberately cause interference to other services such as the Amateur Satellite Service. OSCAR-11 REPORT 01 September 2011 This report covers the period from 27 April to 01 September 2011. The satellite has continued to operate in a very predictable way since the last report, and no changes have been observed. During this time the satellite has been heard reliably during its ten-day transmission periods. Excellent signals have been reported from stations located around the world, and good copy obtained from decoded telemetry frames. The easiest way to check whether OSCAR-11 is operational is to look at the General Satellite Status website http://oscar.dcarr.org/index.php . You can also calculate the operating schedule from the last switch-off time, which was 26 August 2011 at 08:00 UTC (approx), using 10.35 days off followed by 10.35 days on. Reception reports have been received from David VE3SB, Jerry WB5LHD, Toby MM0TOB, Colin VK5HI and Lee M0HOK. Many thanks to all and those who posted to the status website. Although eclipses occur during every orbit, the evening passes over the UK were mostly clear of eclipses, owing to the longer hours of daylight during the Summer months. This resulted in stronger signals during the evening passes. However, as winter approaches eclipses will now start to affect the evening passes. The on-board clock continues to gain, 26 seconds during the current reporting period, and 83 seconds since regular transmissions started at the end of August 2010. There is however a large accumulated error of 308.54339 days slow. This was caused mainly by the clock stopping during eclipses, when there was also an unknown drain on the power supply. The units of the least significant digit correspond approximately to seconds (0.86 seconds actually). The VHF beacon frequency is 145.826 MHz. AFSK FM ASCII Telemetry. The satellite is operating in the default mode, with a cycle time of 20.7 days. 10.35 days on followed by 10.35 days off. At the present time, while OSCAR-11 is operating in a predictable way, I no longer need direct reports or files by e-mail. However, could all listeners continue to enter their reports on the general satellite status website. This is a very convenient and easy to use facility, which shows the current status of all the amateur satellites, and is of use to everyone. Reports around the expected times of switch-on and switch-off are of special interest, especially for times 12:00 - 17:00 and 22:00 - 07:00 UTC, when the satellite is out-of-range in the UK . hi, i have used this satellite with limited results do to the battery condition a while back, this page http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/pcsat.cgi lists PCSat as being used for aprs messages not just beconing? please correct me if i am wrong, but when sending a message over aprs it does sound like a position becon. i have also done this though the ISS also really cool. kc0zhf WY Amsat Area Cooordinator

AO-51 Scheds with Europe

I am looking to flesh out some grids, and Michael (EI3GYB) and I are running out of things to talk about. With my handheld set-up I can work reliably down to 3 deg, which brings Europe west of central Germany, the UK, and western Scandinavia into the circle during the dinner-time-Europe passes. I usually hear KB1RVT on the passes as well (and his QRZ entry has a grid map that will give you a good idea of what is possible), so you could check off two grids. So far, Amsterdam is the farthest east I have worked. AO-27 kicks into data too early to be usable. I am located in FN42IO during these passes; please feel free to drop me an email to set-up a sched while AO-51 is still kicking (and actually, has sounded much stronger this past week). Hi Giulio, AB2VY Edusat is a "Non amateur satellite" ? ......OK ,but it has received an experimental license on 435.750 MHz for communicating at no cost into the "Satellite Amateur Frequencies" without coordination from IARU..OK ? It is very strange that Edusat has received an experimental licence for communications into the Satellite Amateur Band without a frequency coordination from IARU It is also very strange that the GAUSS group do not officially published the operating frequencies of Edusat stating that those frequencies published via internet are wrong frequencies. It seems that there is no coordination between our Communication Autority in Roma and IARU as well between the GAUSS group the IARU and the Radio Amateur community. Has the ARISSat-1 CW-2 frequency shifted?

A couple days ago, I noticed that to get a 500 Hz signal for CW-2 (nominally 145.9190 MHz) to decode the BPSK-1000 signal, I had to change the unDoppler-shifted frequency on my USB receiver from 145.918500 MHz to 145.918280 MHz, a change of 220 Hz. This new value have been consistent over a couple days of careful watching. I don’t believe it to be an error in the keps or clock as it has been true both at the beginning and end of the pass. My receiver has been on for over a month, so unless a component changed value suddenly, .... Has ARISSat-1 changed, has my radio changed, or does only my hairdresser know for sure? Ron W5RKN

ARISSAT-1 TLM Problem

Hi all .. I am receiving the CW and TLM ok signal wise .. I tune in the CW to the mark in the CW / BPSK window.. But I don't ever receive any telemetry .. Using USB, FT897D .. I use the rig and computer for BPSK31 all the time .. Any ideas or suggestions ?? I even watched the You tube Video that was posted .. The FM telemetry downlink was initially acquired at 0014 UTC with the end of the SSTV transmission. The signal was barely audible. Hello everyone, This morning I had a good pass of ARISSat-1 over Hanoi, Vietnam and decoded its BPSK-1000 for the first time. According to ARISSatTLM, more than 30 frames were sent to the server out of more than 60 decoded. Manually tuning the CW signal to keep it within range is fun and it was audible until the satellite was 1.5 degree under the horizon. Maybe next time I'll try the transponder :) 73, Thu XV9AA

Antenna advice please

Hi, At a new QTH and setting up a dual band quad antenna for 2m and 70cm. I plan to make the 70cms antenna,the vertically polarised one, 2m horizontal, as I believe this is the normal arrangement. If anyone has practical experience that goes against this assumption I would be interested, either direct on on the bb. I don't have polar phasers, switchable delay lines or anything else its just a straight choice, which one goes vertical. They are on the same boom so I suppose I could go slant for both ? Main activity here will be phone, VO-52, AO-51, FO-29 plus satellite telemetry from cubesats etc. Thanks in advance John G7HIA

ARISSat transponder

At the 1850z pass, ARISSat passed at approximately 20 degrees for me. I hadn't tried the SSB transponder in a while, and decided to give it a go. All, For those of you who are following the ARISSat-1 telemetry, we now have a second web page with decoded telemetry available at http://www.arissattlm.org/live This page is intended to be viewed on a computer (or large screen computing device). It shows all of the telemetry values that you would see if you were running ARISSatTLM. The advantage of the web page is that it is powered by submissions from other amateur radio ground stations, and it is updated once a minute whenever ARISSat-1 is in range of a telemetry forwarding ground station. Since it depends on stations forwarding telemetry over the Internet, there will occasionally be periods without any updates. The original ARISSat-1 telemetry page at http://www.arissattlm.org/mobile is still up and running. The difference is that the "mobile" page is designed to be viewed on a cellphone or other small screen computing device. Both pages are updated at the same time from the same telemetry. The "live" page just shows more telemetry. Please keep forwarding in your telemetry over the Internet. Also, if you received any telemetry from ARISSat-1, even if you are forwarding, please email the .CSV file(s) to telemetry at arissattlm dot org. Hi Sebastian, I have had similar experiences over the past few days here in Wales ( UK) during the higher daylight passes which now transpire. I was really surprised how strong my downlink was and I only use an "ELK" antenna ( with tracking ) software. No replies to my calls but I did hear others keying / tuning on to my operating frequency. Strange though as I also know of reports from others whom had no response. Perhaps with the rapid changes that have transpired one has to just be lucky with conditions being concident. CSV data file question

I am running ARISSatTLM software to receive the data from the ARISSat-1 satellite. I have seen several mentioning sending .csv files with data. Is the ARISSatTLM capable of generating a .csv data file? Perhaps a cut and paste of the data is done. I have used print screen to capture what I have recorded. Is there a much better way to record the data? I feel like I have missed something somewhere. At first I did not have much success receiving the data. I think I was trying too hard. One day I was getting disgusted with it all and just did nothing, no tuning, no nothing. I received 9 frames of data perfectly. Once again the philosophy of "if it don't stink, don't stir" applies. This satellite has added many hours of fun to my amateur radio hobby. 73, -James, W5AOO

I wonder if a couple of small Lithium polymer battery packs would be a suitable replacement for ARISSat-2 ? Hi Guys Many thanks for all the help the Doppler function is now working correctly. My issue was that because all my computers are on a domain the my documents folder is on the server and not the local PC when SATPC32 installed it puts all the .SQF files on the server. Once I realised what was happening I found the file and added the satellites and all worked ok. Thanks again for your help 73 Keith GU6EFB

A while back, while moving some cables, I managed to connect a 25 pin serial cable to my 25 pin parallel printer port. Some interesting things happened, the weirdest was that my computer reported a wild CPU temperature increase. SatPC32 Doppler.SQF file

Hi Group Have just downloaded the trial version of SATPC32 and have most things working ok. The only thing I cant get to work is the Doppler tracking SatPC2 controls the rig an Icom 910 fine with the default satellites well. It give examples of what to added in the Doppler.SQF file so here are my questions. Should the Doppler.SQF file have been created during installation I had to create my manually? I have put an entry in for ARiSSAT1 but SATPC32 is not picking this information up from the file. g5400b problems

Hello Further details. Rotor controller will not talk with computer. Rotors work manually, still not working with second computer, tried park, not go,, satpc32 using a serial port not virtual, satpc32 works the doppler fb on the 910H. It worked yesterday, however I "rearranged" some equipment in the shack, no go after rearrangement. Not sure what the ^%%$#$% I did. Suggestions and some guidance please. 73 Bob W7LRD

If the ARISSat-1 satellite goes into eclipse, and the battery has failed, the software doesn't get to decide when to shut down. The lights are out with no power. ARISSat1 Telemetry

I believe that there is at least one frame of emergency power telemetry in this attached file, the others I believe indicated high power. I believe that the voltage indicated was about 35.6 while in emergency power mode. I could only hear the satellite for about 3 minutes. It was only 10° elevation at the apex from my QTH in New Mexico. My antenna system is a small horizonially polarized 7 element cheap yagi and mast mounted pre-amp. I hope this information helps indicate the health of the satellite. It almost seems like a software bug and not a battery problem. The satellite seems to switch to low power unnecessarily when the voltage the telemetry indicated is greater than 35. Regards, Mike, KI7AB

No CW beacon was heard. FM downlink was acquired at 0312 UTC with at least S7 and no fading but some noise. SarPC32 and local repeater

Since I use the same radio (Icom IC-910H) for both satellite and local UHF/VHF repeaters, I’d like to be able to have SatPC32 automatically switch over the radio to satellite mode when a satellite is in view, and switch back to the repeater after LOS. I seems it should be possible to use “Automatic sat change ON” and have a dummy satellite in the satellite list configured to a local repeater. When a real satellite comes into view, SatPC32 would switch to that and when no real satellites are in view, the dummy satellite (repeater) would become active. My first idea would be to have the dummy satellite in the lowest satellite priority, and a dummy keps entry which would have the dummy satellite always in view. However, I don’t know how to construct such a keps element. Perhaps there is a more elegant way. Suggestions? Ron W5RKN

Southwest Texas Grids - August 22/23 SUCCESS!

I want to thank all who supported my efforts to activate DL98/DL99 on the Texas/Mexico border. I also made quite a few contacts from EL07 in Laredo, Texas. Despite two border patrol inspection stations and three border patrol "drive-by's" while I was operating, the boundary operation went smoothly. APRS coverage was fairly poor for most of the trip unless I was in between major metropolitan areas in the Interstate 35 corridor. My SO-50 operations weren't as smooth as on AO-27 and AO-51 because they were unplanned and I was working them from whatever place I was on the road at AOS. Sometimes it was *not* a great location. Overall I ended up making 102 contacts from grids EM00, EM01, EM02, EL07, EL08, EL09, DL98, and DL99. I've already uploaded these contacts to Logbook of the World. Hello all again. Can some good person help me try packet on the Iss 145.825. I have Multipsk and also Mixw on my pc so hopefully one of these will allow me to send packet via soundcard to my Ic-910. Hii all, ARISSAt-1 voice telemetry just now: 00:27z 8/21/2011 received at CM98 MET 42 min IHU Temp = +30c Control panel temp = +20c Battery 3??? (lost to QSB) Battery current ??? ma SSTV picture followed (a real one this time, not pre-recorded!), then off. 00:29z 8/21/2011 received at CM98 MET = 45 min IHU Temp = +31c Control panel temp = +20c Battery 35.66v Battery current -8ma This was followed by 2 min off, and another voice announcement, children chanting, and then off again to LOS. So, a question... Why, when the spacecraft is in full sun, is the battery current negative? I'm guessing that there some orientations that will not supply sufficient power for operations. If so, what happens when we lose the battery altogether? Reset? Or is there a shedding of load first when the voltage drops? Greg KO6TH

EL18/19 activation

Over the next few days ('til around Tuesday 8/30) I will be near the EL18/19 border and will try to work the FM sats (SO-50, AO-27, AO-51) from there. I cannot guarantee any specific times or passes due to my unpredictable work schedule (which includes the weekend), so stations needing these grids will just need to keep an ear out for me. If anybody needs EL08 or EL09, please e-mail me to try to work out a schedule. I am actually near the corner of EL08/09/18/19 but will focus on the rarer EL18/19 pair since the corner itself is inaccessible. Thanks, Wadhah, WA5DA
