ISS cross-band

Has anyone had a cross-band QSO or heard yourself on ISS? Is ISS actually in cross-band mode? I may have heard myself at 1558Z just now, but there was a lot of crud along with any signal, so it was probably nothing. Certainly no other sigs in my 4 minute window. Tnx and 73, Tony, N2UN

SpaceX with AMSAT DL Written by Peter Gülzow Tuesday, 28 October 2008 This was the fourth and successful launch of the Falcon-1 rocket on September 29 2008 of the SpaceX program. It is the beginning of a new era . This first purely privately financed launch using a liquid fuels operated rocket, which can bring pay loads into a stable earth orbit. SpaceX (space exploration Technologies corporation) was created of the entrepreneur Elon Musk as a privately financed starting up enterprise for the building of a large extent re-usable two-stage rocket, the Falcon in June 2002. On the occasion of the successful launch of the Falcon-1 rocket AMSAT DL president Peter Gülzow congratulated the SpaceX team and Elon Musk personally for this huge success. AMSAT DL follow the activities of SpaceX already for quite some time with large interest, especially regarding a possible co-operation and launch possibility of the AMSAT P5-A Mars mission. On 9 October 2008, a meeting with SpaceX in the central development lab of the AMSAT DL in Marburg was organized in a relatively short notice. Jonathan Hofeller of SpaceX was received by AMSAT DL president Peter Gülzow and Hartmut Päsler. Professor Dr. Karl Meinzer, project manager of the P5-A Mars mission were in addition represented, as well as P3-E project manager Heike Straube. In the process of theses very detailed discussions it became obvious and again and again clear that the guest and the hosts of SpaceX and AMSAT share a quite unite and same philosophy and approach, and it will only lead again and again to success. Besides it was to be developed it is interesting to see that Elon Musk has already his own ideas and plans toward Mars and there is here quite further thing in common in our goals in the present time. In the further discussion also the technical aspects were discussed regarding possible launch configurations for AMSAT P3-E and P5-A, with the appropriate schedules in addition. After an afternoon of very informative very positive discussions for both sides future further deepening discussions were agreed upon. Possibly as a result of it also new perspectives for the AMSAT P3-E and P5-A Mars mission will arise. P.S. If AMSAT-NA set aside his Eagle funds towards P3E can we expect to have a HEO in 2009-2010? It is obvious that our German friends are in a very advance state of completion for their HEO project. I just hope in a TRUE amateur radio spirit that all the international AMSAT'S will regroup and support the AMSAT-DL project. Hi! Omar XE1AO will be operating on the FM satellites from grid DK99wt between today and Friday (26 December). This location is near Oro de Hidalgo in the state of Mexico, the Mexican state that virtually encompasses Mexico City. Omar has an FT-60R HT and a handheld Yagi with him as his satellite station. Omar was on the AO-51 pass tonight around 0100 UTC. He was hoping to make more contacts, but unfortunately he was not able to answer most of the stations trying to call him with some stations talking over others. Keep in mind that English is not Omar's primary language. Please remember to call him using the standard international phonetic alphabet and digits ("four-three" for 43, not "forty-three") when trying to work him, and he will be happy to put a new grid in your satellite log. 73! Making regular QSOs on the Linear Satellites

Happy Holidays Everybody! Recently, I added a CT62 cable to my FT-817ND, and have been using Ham Radio Deluxe for computer control. And without changing anything else (i.e. Still using the Eggbeaters on the garage), I have made several contacts on both VO-52 and FO-29. I have to say that it is JUST AS EASY, if not easier to make said contacts on the linear satellites due to more room on the transponder as well as having better reception capability since it isn't using FM as the mode of choice. Try the fun I had 10 years ago: http://science.nasa.gov/newhome/headlines/ast22dec98_1.htm It's very easy to do; I just sat perched a TV antenna (only thing I could get very quickly) on a camera tripod, and pointed it in the direction of Lake Kickapoo, Texas (very close to Wichita, Tx) with some slight elevation. Lots of very loud returns (had to dive for the audio control at times) during the shower, lots of short ones- a great visual as well as radio event. As for Spacecraft, it was no sweat to pick up returns from the then small ISS. Just use your prediction program to predict when the station will pass through the beam (a huge, fan shape directed straight up), point your antenna at that point in the sky, and you will hear it if it is above the horizon at that moment at your location, and you are not too far away. The station is *much* larger now, so has a much greater RCS/larger return signal, so the horizon might be the only limiting factor now. I found the strongest signals occurred when the spacecraft was located in the NavSpaSur radar beam, and between my location and the transmitting ground site or nearer overhead and in the beam. I used no preamp, and only the twin lead from the antenna directly to an Icom R7000 receiver. The Shuttle was also quite audible. I did not try other spacecraft; remember these two are leo's. I could not convince the author of the NASA article that the short fainter pings were not other satellites, even with simple math examples. The receiving sites the government runs catch about 20,000 pings a day according to personnel. 73, Steve W5ZA (located in Shreveport, La. -Northwest Louisiana, about 300 miles east of the radar site)

The beam is only 0.2 degrees wide, so a spacecraft moving at 5km per sec will only be in the beam a fraction of a second. However for a number of days each month, the moon passes through the beam twice a day, and is moving slow enough to be in the beam for about 2 minutes. Maybe that is what you heard? Easy to prove, jsut set up Kikapoo Texas as a ground station, then run a moon track, and the time of the fence crossing is whenvever the moon croses the 91.5 or 271.5 azimuth from Kikapoo. And the mooon being so far away, anyone on this hemisphere can hear it. But for LEO spacecraft you have to live within the mid to southern USA. ITAR - Chinese Launchers

Another newbie question

Again, thanks to all who are so supportive on this BB. I am trying out one of the ARR mast-mounted pre-amps on 432. I just listened to the SO50 and AO51 passes. I swear I cannot hear any difference, ok maybe just a bit. But not much, not enough to make a difference. SO50 was not audible except for a brief portion of the pass here (my antennas are oriented horizontal at 30 degrees elevation, so that explains part of it). Maybe the pre-amps really do their stuff on the passband birds? If I am wasting my time, I won't be embarrassed if somebody tells me so. Please, I am open to suggestions. ARISS special event thanks and suggestion

My greatest thanks for this special ARISS event. It's new challenges encourage me to hone my equipment up to standard (which is arguably the serious point of the thing). My frustration has been that due to work commitments (which I do in my spare time from satellites, hi) I haven't had any time except weekends, and just got my 9k6 tnc adjusted so that it'll properly modulate my rig, and the 9k6 effort has now stopped. But I see that there's a programme gap between the 3rd and 15th of January? So I am sending this to the -bb because others may have their wish list too!! 73 de andy g0SFJ

Thanks Joanne! I would think that it might also hear the short 1 sec pings of any big satllites (ISS etc) that also went through it unless they have filered those out somehow... Easy to check. Just put a gnd station at the coordinates of kikapoo texas and watch for any ISS or hubble etc passes the instant they pass an azimuth of 91.5 or 271.5 fro m Kikapoo. Here's something to do while waiting for the next satellite pass ... http://spaceweather.com/ has an audio feed of the meteor pings from the Ursid Meteor Shower as they pass through the Air Force Space Surveillance Radar in Texas. Note: the Ursid radiant is circumpolar (always up) over the radar so the echoes may be heard at any hour, night or day. IC910 ctcss - thanks

Thanks to David B and Ib, I now have 67Hz ctcss enambled on the uplink and have found it there using the scan function of my TMD710. There is a whole host of bands and subband combinations when in sat mode and with HRD and in one of them - the critical one! - it was still set to 77Hz. thanks guys andy g0sfj

Eurpoean IC-910 CTCSS disabled? ISS contact implication!

Hi according to the manual, CTCSS encoding is disabled on all IC-910 s in Europe, Sweden and Italy! I can set it in tone squelch but does that tx it too when in satellite mode? Otherwise it won't be possible for me and other IC910s over here to contact the ISS in the new repeater mode (which I don't think is in operation yet anyway). andy G0SFJ

A number of interesting opportunities and events have developed over the past two months for AMSAT that I would like to briefly share with you: 1. ARISS Silver Anniversary. The first amateur radio two-way communication between the Space Shuttle and amateurs on the ground took place on December 3, 1983 when Owen Garriott, W5LFL made his historic flight on STS-9. There are a number of oppor- tunities for amateurs to help celebrate this event and the ARISS International Committee, chaired by AMSAT VP-Human Space Flight, Frank Bauer, KA3HDO have arranged for some special events. Please check ANS and the AMSAT webpage (www.amsat.org) for the latest information and join the fun! 2. AO-16 operations. As expected, performance of this spacecraft is declining as the spacecraft's temperature is dropping due to longer eclipses resulting in less sunlight and a cooler spacecraft. This drop in temperature is causing the satellite's hardware timer to reset until the spacecraft warms up (when there is at least 85% illumination). If you're interested in making two-way contacts using AO-16's unique cross mode, cross band voice repeater, with an uplink on 145.920 FM and downlink on 437.026 MHz reduced carrier AM, now is the time to try it! The satellite is expected to 'go silent' shortly when temperatures stay low enough as to not allow software configuration of the satellite before the hardware timer resets itself again. 3. President's Club. A fundraising appeal letter was mailed this week to all AMSAT members. Please consider donating to the AMSAT President's Club so that we can continue our efforts to maintain amateur radio in space. 4. Near Term Engineering Task Force. I announced at the AMSAT Annual Meeting in Atlanta that a group led by Bill Ress, N6GHZ had been formed to review the 'Rideshare' Proposal developed by Tom Clark, K3IO as well as evaluate AMSAT's ability to develop a modularization strategy to adapt RF packages to various structures. The committee has been diligently meeting every two weeks via tele- conference to discuss future options for AMSAT and to help structure AMSAT's thinking on future spacecraft opportunities. While it is too soon for formal announcements of their findings, it is good to know that we have a formal group actively focused on engineering issues. 5. SuitSat-2. Development work continues to place SuitSat-2 in service sometime in 2009. Several engineering issues have recently surfaced regarding modulation and transmission schemes and the team is evaluating several options regarding how best to resolve the issues. Several individuals have recently joined the engineering team to help overcome these challenges by developing potential alternative solutions. 6. ITAR. I announced at the AMSAT Annual Meeting in Atlanta that AMSAT would actively develop a strategy concerning ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) and related export regulations. Our goal is to ensure that AMSAT is in full compliance with ITAR, develop materials to train our satellite builders on ITAR compliance, and to seek ways where we may continue to work with other AMSAT organizations on satel- lite projects. Since the Annual Meeting, Bill Ress, N6GHZ and I have been working with an attorney who specializes in ITAR. We hope to make a formal submission to the State Department regarding ITAR in early 2009. 7. AMSAT Lab. AMSAT is actively seeking a new home for our AMSAT Lab. Unfortunately, due to changes that took place at HISS (Hawk Institute for Space Sciences) in Pocomoke City, MD over the summer, we are forced to remove our equipment and clean room from the current facility. We are in active discussions with several institutions concerning potential relocation, but no decision has been made. If you are in position to provide contacts with a not-for-profit institution that might be inter- ested the hosting the AMSAT Lab, please contact me. 8. AMSAT 40th Anniversary. AMSAT was incorporated in 1969, so this coming year (2009) is our 40th Anniversary! The 2009 AMSAT Symposium will take place the weekend of October 9 in the Washington-Baltimore area. As per standard procedure, the ISS ham radio system will be turned off for the EVA. + December 28-January 3 - we plan to reconfigure the Crossband repeater for a special experiment. This will be a test of our L-Band uplink capability, which, to date, has not been proven out. Plan for an uplink of 1269.65 MHz and and downlink on the standard frequency 145.80 MHz using low power. Given the subtan- tial cable losses of the L-band system, we hope some "big guns" are able to penetrate through, keep up with doppler, and make the connection. + And at times, especially during the weekends, you might see some SSTV operations if the crew is available. December 21, 2008 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-356.03 ARISS US Hardware Manager Lou McFadin, W5DID provided a summary of expected parameters for those considering trying to make a contact with the ISS on L-band to VHF crossband repeater experiment planned for December 28 to January 3. Lou reported, "The measured sensitivity of the L band receiver on a D700, as the radio aboard the ISS, is -105dBm for full quieting. The cable loss from the radio to the antenna is 9.3db. The antenna gain is zero db. The polarization is LHCP." Extending the calcuations to cover the entire system path, Lou said, "The path loss at the horizon on L band is -160dB. That means the required EIRP for a full quieting contact at the horizon is 65dBm. The path loss decreases by 15dB at 80 degrees elevation so that means you can get full quieting with 50dBm in that case. To further elaborate if you use a 20dB gain antenna (a small dish), it is estimated that you can complete a QSO with 32 watts at the horizon or 1 watt at 80 degrees elevation." December 21, 2008 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-356.04 AMSAT-NA VP Operations, Drew KO4MA reported on behalf of the AO-51 Operations Team, "We are now back to the normal uplink arrangement of 145.920 and 435.300 for normal repeater use. We changed from the QRM mitigation experiment of operating via the 145.880 uplink back to this normal mode to enable low-power repeater QRP operation. The QRP repeater is now operational on 145.880 and 435.150." As a result of the QRM investigation Drew said, "I'm convinced not all of our problems are related to the cordless phones. I heard tonight whistlers, blowing in the mike, and folks giving extended CQs. We are working on finding the general location of the cordless phones, but it takes time. Then we'll work at shutting them down. The AO-51 Operations Team provided results of their QRM investigation on and around the 145.920 uplink. There may be some low level modula- tion on some of the signals in the captured waterfall diagram. It is believed they may be from some of the same long distance phones that were plauging AO-27 and SO-50 a few years ago. Observations indicate the interfering signals are lost about the time the edge of the foot- print crosses the mid Atlantic states. PCSAT-1 is only operation when its solar panels are illuminated by sunlight. Full sun periods occur when passes are at sunrise and sunset to earth observers. PCSAT gets sun 24 hours a day then, but only on the side panels due to the orientation of the satellite. I'd like to weigh in on this topic with my 2 cents worth, being a long time QRP operator on various bands and modes... I think QRP means soething different depending on what kind of operating you do. On HF, its generally 5 watts into a simple antenna, such as a dipole or vertical. HF digital, there isnt much of a distinction (psk31) as many run 5 watts into a dipole vs maybe 20-30 watts into a similar antenna for QRO? I operate VHF and microwave. to me, on 2m SSB tropo, I consider QRP to be 5-10 watts into whatever and however large an array you can muster, as most QRO stations run 50 watts or more into a similar antenna. EME ops typically defines QRP as anything under about 500 watts or so into a single yagi. (no matter how large that single yagi is) Meteor Scatter I've been called QRP running 50 watts into 10 elements. However, on 10 GHz, I run 2 watts into a 18 inch offset fed dish, and I do NOT consider myself QRP. I'm an "average powered station" with that setup. When I ran 200 mW into the same dish, it was questionable even then if I could consider myself QRP. 2 watts = about 2-4KW ERP, 200 mw -= 200-400W ERP. (I havent actually MEASURED the gain, this is calculated ERP) QRP is a relative term. Depending on what kind of operating you do, ERP certainly does take into account whether you're QRP or not. I think in the satellite realm, I would understand QRP to be 5 watts or less into a low gain antenna. Maybe I'm wrong about this, as I'm still a relative newcomer, however This puts everyone on an even keel as far as someone stepping over another to make it fair for everyone. I know there are operators on the main channel that might tweak up the power to get thru on a busy channel. I know, because I have when I started out. I have realised it wasnt right, and now my power stays at 5 watts on the 857. Do i consider myself QRP on AO-51? well, with my homebrew 3 ele/6 ele V/u antenna on a fixed elevation mount, yea, at times I do, when running 5 watts. I actually have LESS antenna gain than someone would have with a handheld yagi because the antenna is hardly ever pointing right at the bird. The QRP channel does provide some interesting experimentation like what Tim, N3TL and others have done, exploring "how low can you go" and still make contact. To me, THAT is the kind of experimentation that seems like a logical purpose for the "QRP" channel. As a side note, hasnt the rule always been to run just enough signal to achieve a downlink of reasonable quality? I remember this from my AO-10 days. Too much power on an SSB bird robs power from everyone. Too much power on an FM bird robs others from getting in. I would have opened up more eastern countries but due to the fm effect was stamped on by siberian stations, etc. Would love to uplink in a qrp channel and downlink onto the main channel so that qro ops could uplink on the main (qro) uplink and down link onto the same channel as me. I don't think qro ops listen to the qrp downlink channel? I never saw anything in FCC exams about QRP or ERP but it has been a long time for me since I was last examined . . . folks are confusing ERP and QRP . . . 5 watts out QRP driving an amp . . . get real . . . it is 5 watts out of the final stage feeding the antenna . . . the gain of the antenna does not have anything to do with QRP it has to do with ERP . . . one is apples and the other is oranges . . . the original issue arose out of someone feeling that folks using the AO 51 QRP channel were not using QRP . . . well I use 5 watts on the QRP channel but I only have fairly big yagis for satellites . . . If the goal is to have HT users with compromised antennas use the "QRP" channel then drop the QRP designation and ask the users to keep the power to 5 watts out from the final stage of the transmitter and then WHAT ? ? ? 5 watts many can compute but that is it . . . ERP is guess work by most . . . that is my point . . . seems senseless to me but surprising the responses . . . ERP is not QRP different concepts . . . apples and oranges . . . . Jim W9VNE

Jack KD1PE et al A ham radio antenna installation is not very static (no pun intended) it is rather dynamic ; to wit : improper assembly of a antenna (variation from the instruction), age and mounting losses of the coax from ultra violet rays, water intrusion, the angle of the antenna wave vs. where the satellite is at the moment, use of improper coax connectors, i will keep the list brief . . . to repeat it is a dynamic (constantly changing ) situation not a static (stay put) system . . . when a TV or FM station states its ERP it can do so with more certainty since it uses very sophisticated instrumentation and hardware that is relatively static ( coax with helium etc) . . . commercial antennas that have rigorous specifications installed by professionals etc . . . so for a ham radio QRP set up you can make a SWAG (simple wild a_ _ guess) . . . a db loss from ultra violet, another for water intrusion and still more for bad connectors and you have 2 or 3 db (loss of half your imagined ERP) then find out like I did that M Square sent me elements that did not pass QC (quality control) and I got a simple ; " ah shucks" from my telephone call and confirmation by others on this BB (bulletin board) that indeed they too had received elements that did not conform to spec . . . a hack saw fixed that goof Add to that the db or two loss from the guy in New York State (some university) that told me that he just assembled his M Square antenna by starting with the longest element and progressively assembling the shorter ones to the boom DESPITE admonishment from M Square that there would be 1 or 2 sequences when the progression would require a longer element ( probably to reduce side lobes ) . . OK : so many feet of LMR 400 or RG 213 and what did the manufacture say about db gain ? do the math calculating the feed line loss and multiply that by the gain = simple QRP power . . . OK well what is the mfg's gain . . . advertised , isotropic, vs a dipole . . . read the fine print . . . not many do or even know the difference. . .what if any gain to you give a 1/4 wave ground plane ? ? ? where is its major lobe when the satellite is at 70 degrees of elevation . . . OK let me change my QRP calculation after checking the printout of the ground plane's loss . . . the premise that I follow is that QRP in the ham fraternity for decades prior to AMSAT was 5 watts output from the final stage of the transmitter . . . any other attempt which hopes to replicate that simplistic approach is speculation based upon a dynamic that is flawed from lack of accurate measurements . . . and constantly changing parameters . . AMSAT started using the term QRP when they probably should have used ERP or more accurately "estimated" ERP . . . after all the goal is to allow those with lesser powered rigs (HT) to have a channel on AO 51 where they could be more competitive with restricted power . . . maybe a better interpretation of ERP should be ESTIMATED RESTRICTIVE POWER rather than EFFECTIVE RADIATED POWER which in amateur radio is more speculative than accurate as I have attempted to point out in prior posts . . . unfortunately when I run 5 watts output on AO51 "QRP" channel I only have one set of satellite antennas to use . . .I could . . .( might be interesting ) use my Bird 25 watt 2 meter slug . . . on the other side of the attenuator (which I built years ago 10 db) so I could use 1/2 watt Uplink to my 10 db antenna or 50 watts estimated ERP . . .before I do that I think I will attempt my last ham goal, EME . . . QRP ????

I have been Reading the various comments regarding what is or is not QRP... The various contests have all taken the easy way out - that is with a transmitter output power level - but to my way of thinking it is only the easy way out as the antenna, the coax, and the ability to direct or condense the signal are equally - if not more so - of importance. since the FCC has no problem with specifying ERP (Effective Radiated Power as compared to a specified antenna) for some modes/bands, I see no reason why that would not be the criteria for determining what is and what is not QRP... After all the real goal as I understand it is to level the playing field and the ERP rule would certainly do that. So if you want to QRP (using the 5 watts criteria), then do so, but don't brag to me when your ERP is really 125 watts because of your antennas gain and your ability to place your signal on target and keep it there... SatPC32 track error help

I have had this happen before and cannot remember how I fixed it. Tried to track ISS today and the track is off. Both the computer and SatPC32 show the correct time and date. Latest Keps have been downloaded. I am hearing ISS packets but the computer says it is over the southern-Indian Ocean. QRP is a measure of the transmitter output . . . on a practical basis how would an operator accurately measure the ERP if you were using ERP (effective radiated power) as a QRP benchmark . . . you would need instrumentation to measure the feedline losses and sophisticated instrumentation to measure the gain of an antenna . . . most of that type of instrumentation is beyond the average amateur radio operator . . . . but most do have access or use of a watt meter . . . . thus the simple way of calculating QRP . . . ERP is used primarily in satellite operations because it affects the transponders (not FM repeaters) I have had several private emails in response to my comments about QRP . . . I have seen folks operate the CQ WW CW contest in the QRP category with stacked beams or monoband beams . . . . I have never seen a definition of QRP that went into ERP . . . . they just use the transmitter output with all of the ambiguities that brings . . . have fun Jim W9VNE

I just read in the news that Majel "Number One"/"Christine Chapel"/ "Lwaxana Troi"/"Computer Voice" Barrett-Roddenberry died today. She will be missed. I was a kid in the 1960s and was inspired by a number of things to the technical career I have today. Star Trek was one of those inspirations... IC-910H data port receiving

Happy Holidays, I am trying to receive packet from my data port to the audio in of the computer, unfortunately I have not been successful. I have a 6 pin mini din connector with bare wires at one end, I buzzed out the data out, ground is the shell, and made the connection to the stereo plug, no sound. I'm missing something, any help from someone with the Icom would be appreciated. 73, Pete, WB2OQQ

After 4 months of working the satellites I have the following observation . . . . I have QSLed close to 300 stations with great response (thanks for confirming close to 200 Grid Squares) . . . most but not all of those QSOs were North American stations . . . . many (but not all) QSLs indicate the type of antenna that was used . . . my statistics show that about 2 out of 3 are using some compromise antenna . . . definition of compromise antenna : Elk, Arrow, Eggbeater, Vertical. They are compromised compared to a Yagi or Helix antenna. Some of the compromised antennas are further impaired by being used indoors. I have often worked K9CIS on either FO 29 or AO 7 when Frank was running milliwatts and I had an armchair copy on CW. He was not running compromised antennas. FM mode is the mode of choice for most. Those using FM must realize that there is a difference on how FM receivers work. The strongest signal captures the discriminator and comes out on top compared to a competing signal. That does not occur on SSB or CW. Frank, K9CIS and Mike, K9QHO further assisted me when I got on in August with my use of a dual polarity yagi. . .this type of antenna mitigates the constantly changing polarity heard by those using linear (vertical or horizontal) polarity. . . Many of those compromised antenna users also use QRP power levels ( 5 watts or less). . . . when I got back into satellite operating from a 30 year hiatus, I noted the advertising for the Arrow and its use with an HT (QRP) rig. That was certainly novel and interesting from my 56 years of operating sometimes with stacked yagis on HF and VHF. . . My receiving antenna for satellites has 14 db of gain and dual polarity . . . well 13 db of gain is equivalent to a multiplier factor of 10 for 10 db and double that to 20 for the extra 3 db. A friend of mine has used the Elk and the Arrow. He could not carry on a cross town QSO on 435 mhz using the Elk so he sent it back. I often make QSOs into France, UK, Netherlands and Belgium on AO 7 using my antennas at an elevation of 1 or 2 degrees. I can hear very well with these antennas. Something that a compromised antenna can not do. [ transponder satellites] AO7 , FO29, VO52. . . turn on a preamp and it gets even better for the transponder operator . . . you do not use a preamp on an HT . . . With 5 watts (QRP) on FM and a 10 db transmitting antenna my ERP is 50 watts . . . . and an HT @ 2 or 3 maybe 5 watts to a compromised antenna maybe is lucky to get 6 db gain (a factor of 4) . . . for an ERP of 8 to 10 watts and linear polarity (another compromise) which can reduce the ERP during a pass by a factor of 3 db (half) . . . cutting the HT's operator's power to 4 or 5 watts . . . compare that to my 50 watts ERP ( 5 watt station ) with no compromise antennas used both on FM and Transponder satellites to the HT operator . . you will see that it is not QRP levels but antenna efficiency and effectiveness that is the BIG difference . . . QRP operating refers to the power not to the antennas being used . . . I think folks need to reflect on what QRP operating is compared to QRP and compromised antennas . . . Using an HT is OK but do not expect it to compare to the same 5 watt power level and a set of yagis . . . 5 watts is still 5 watts for either station . . . the difference is the antennas. . . . . yes it is novel and good PR to see HT users use the satellites . . . . . reality is something else . . . A pair of yagis with dual polarity (not linear polarity) and ACCURATE TRACKING is still another advantage that is compromised by the hand held antenna . . . I have seen operators wave the antenna and twist it around . . . well it works . . . the yagi operator using elevation and azimuth rotors can set his antennas to the correct positions within a couple of degrees . . . . that is another advantage over a compromised antenna . . . . yes there is a lot of passion by the Davids out there who want to outdo the Goliaths . . . that is human nature . . . if both are running 5 watts ; the increased gain , tracking and superior polarity all add up to grabbing the FM receiver in the satellite and shutting out the less advantaged station running the same power but with inferior antennas . . .it is the antennas not the 5 watt QRP that makes the difference . . . Probably 20 % of the FM users have the superior antennas compared to those with compromised antennas . . . . so often the compromised antenna user feels good and being able to compete (against other compromised antenna users) for QSOs . . . in the situations where they run into a user who does not have a compromised antennas they should understand the situation for what it is . . . it is not QRP against non QRP it can be the antenna hearing is another issue . . . i call stations that I want to add to my Grid Square or country total like every one else . . . others do not hear the DX stations i call . . .i can get multiple stations replying to my call . . . others get upset . . . . remember what compromise means = PATIENCE and UNDERSTANDING. . . . thanks for reading , I hope this helps some understand the reality of the situation . . . HI, Peter The draw of the data socket on Icom 910 manual is for the female socket (on the radio) . The male socket is a mirror of this draw check up this first.!! Pins are:- Pin 4 for 9k6 Pin 5 for 1k2 Pin 2 grounds Pin 1 data in Pin 3 PTT Ground connect to the base of the audio plug and data out to the tip of the plug. On the back of the radio there were two mini sockets one for main band and other for sub make sure you select the right one. The ACC pins configuration can be programmed through setup mode. AO-7 historic orbit approaching

Hey everyone, Based on the AO-7 Log Web page, AO-7 is about to begin its 56,000th orbit! The next pass over the USA, which begins for me in Northeast Georgia at roughly 01:12 UTC (8:12 p.m. Eastern Standard Time) will be part of that orbit. I wonder just how the QRP repeater is regulated so to speak. I gave up on the regular repeater as 5w in is just a waste of time but this evenings pass on the QRP repeater was just as bad with stations clearly running well in excess of QRP levels. DM31 and DM51 QSL card status

All of the requests for QSL cards for contacts with K8YSE/7 in DM31, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, 18-19 November and DM51, 22 November, Bisbee, Arizona were put in the mail today. About 50 different stations were worked from DM31 and 20 were worked from DM51. Organ Pipe was a real experience from both a radio standpoint as well as hiking through this amazing park. The campground was nearly empty; we had no one in view from our campsite. Every visible AO51 and SO50 pass was worked and only one pass netted zero contacts due to the extraordinary amount of east coast activity. All qso's were made from the campground. DM51 was a night time pass on AO51. The location was scouted out in the afternoon when you could see where the mountains were. Then we drove back to the same gps coordinates later that day when it was pitch dark. This was the only way to insure that we would have a low horizon for the pass. QSL cards for DM31 were printed from a photo taken by my XYL, W8ZJB. The DM51 cards are photos with labels printed for me by my son, KD8CAO. If you need a card for either grid, please send an SASE to my qrz.com address. If you're looking for a little excitement, try doing a portable operation from a relatively inactive grid. There are plenty out there that are not that far from active stations. Take a photo, have them printed at your favorite discount drug store, cut them down to 3-1/2" x 5-1/2", put a label on them and confirm a new grid for those that are paying attention. And if you live in a rare grid, please try to get on the birds now and then. We all need something new to work to make it interesting. A special thank you to WD9EWK, N5AFV, N5ZNL, KD8CAO, ND9M, VO1ONE (N8TLV) and all of the others who have made the effort to operate from grids away from their home QTH. The launcher will be carrying a total payload of 9,220 kg, including 8,340 kg for the two satellites, which will be released separately into their targeted orbits." PO-63 Status?

Hi all, Does anyone know the status of Peheunsat-1 (PO-63)? The Weekly Satellite Report only states that it is in orbit and I could not find it listed on any of the AMSAT sat status pages. SO-50, YES!

Tonight, I worked into SO-50 for the first time. All it took was some patience and listening. My FT817 pair and Arrow antenna worked just fine. I did notice that I could hardly hear anything at the beginning of the pass (330 AZ), but heard the signals quite loudly at the end (180 AZ). The elevation went as high as 70 degrees, and I had good copy from 70 degrees at peak all the way down on the descent. I presume this was due to the rotation of the satellite, which explains why I did not hear anything on the ascent. Also, all I heard was courteous and professional behavior during the pass. I was impressed, there was no "gaggle" of rudeness. Kudos to W8KHP and AA5PK who provided me with new grid squares and copied my 5 watts. To the other FB ops who called but I could not copy, my apologies. I will catch you on a future pass. Thanks to all. It is a MKU 232 A2 Super Low Noise 2.4GHz HEMT Preamplifier with 1268MHz Notch Filter. Measured from the factory with a noise figure of 0.68dB and 40dB gain. AO-51 notes and observations

Just a few notes on AO-51 to share with the group. We are now back to the "normal" uplink arrangement. 145.920 and 435.300 for normal repeater use, and 145.880 and 435.150 for QRP use ONLY. While switching between the two pairs tonight I heard folks calling stations that were operating on the other repeater. Sorry for the confusion by switching back so fast to the 145.920 uplink, but we had to do it to make the QRP channel available. I'm convinced not all of our problems are related to the cordless phones. I heard tonight whistlers, blowing in the mike, and folks giving extended CQs. All of these are totally unnecessary, but to be expected out of some portion of the newbies just getting their feet wet on satellites. I caught some callsigns of some of the ops exhibiting shall we say a lack of "finesse" when it comes to those types of behavior, and will be dropping them a friendly email pointing them to some suggestions. I encourage other regulars to do the same, with a gentle hand. Ben Jackson's guide is a good reference, available at http://www.innismir.net/etc/CourteousAO51_v1.1.pdf . The biggest thing is to not get wound up too tight about the whole thing. To quote my favorite SciFi show, "This has all happened before, and will all happen again". Those that knew and loved UO-14 know what I mean. If it really gets your goat, c'mon up to AO-7, FO-29, and VO-52. We need more SSB/CW ops to use these birds, and it's easy as pie. Got an 817 or other capable rig with 2m and 70cm? Add an arrow, other small beams, or good omnis preferably with preamps, and a PC with SatPC32, and start making QSOs. We are working on finding the general location of the cordless phones, but it takes time. Today I mailed out DVDs with SDR recordings of FO-29's transponder and the QRM to some folks that will treat it as an Easter egg hunt and find the general location of these troublemaker phones from their Doppler curves, and then we'll work at shutting them down. 73, and thanks for the support, Drew, KO4MA AMSAT-NA VP Operations

That is barely in the footprint from Campo Grande, Brasil. It is also possible that Jim AA4MD was operating portable from Central America while doing volunteer medical work. ISS 9K6 with ICOM 910

Anyone using the 910 on the VHF port for full duplex 9K6 operation with the ISS ? I use a DSP2232, and of course, the upper part of the 910 does the transmitting and the lower for receiving, as with GO-32 9K6. The hardware/software I use is HALLOSAT by DB3DH, for rotator and radio control. I'm using UISS for decoding/displaying. 73, Dave.

Hi All, I think we had folks transmitting on one uplink and being heard on the other downlink. For those that didn't know, they activated both pairs last night and switched back to 145.920 uplink for the 435.300 downliink. The APRS mode TX/RX is in the APRS menu. There is a separeate TX/RX setting for PACKET mode in the radio menu. You maybe using the wrong one. Another cross-sat opportunity?

Looking ahead using HRD Sat Tracker, it looks like FO29 and VO52 will be offering another opportunity for the Northeast US around 1518 UTC on Saturday. Qualification: Those that have had 2 way communications with the ISS on Voice, Packet (APRS), or through the voice repeater. And those that have heard the ISS from space in any of the ARISS operations modes (Voice, SSTV, School Contact, Voice Repeater, Digital). Valid dates to qualify for certificate: November 30 to January 15. Receiving the Certificate: A) Please note on your QSL the ARISS mode of operation (e.g. SSTV, voice, school, etc) and whether the contact with you was 1 way (receive only) or 2 way. C) On the outside of the QSL envelope, please include the words "25th Anniversary Certificate" D) Make sure your envelope is big enough to accept an 8.5 by 11 inch certificate and includes the proper postage. Important note: We will be sending your certificate to the volunteer distributors in bulk AFTER the event is over. (This saves workload and money). QSO Results: Richard made over 500 voice QSOs during his flight, clearly more than any single ham has made on-orbit during a short duration mission. And he sent down about 1000 SSTV images during his flight. QSL Card: Those that had a QSO with Richard can receive an ARISS QSL card using the normal ARISS process. (See www.ariss.org). Richard Garriott is also planning a personal card which is in development. Once it is developed, they will be shipped to the ARISS international QSL distribution volunteers for distribution. ARISS Update--25th Anniversary of Ham Radio in Space 12/14/08

All, As I mentioned on November 29, the ARISS team is currently celebrating 25 years of amateur radio operations from space. This e-mail describes some of the planned set of special event opportunities for the remainder of the month of December and the beginning of January. To date, the ISS crew has configured the radio to support cross-band repeater operations, they have supported some SSTV downlinks and we have had the opporunity to participate in a special test of 9600 baud packet radio operations on the simplex frequency of 145.825 MHz. This week through December 19, we expect the ISS Ham radio system to be on the 145.825 MHz frequency supporting 1200 baud packet. If PCSAT is configured during the week, double hop APRS is possible. Dec 21-26 we plan to support the Crossband repeater mode with a twist. Our intent is to configure the radio for 145.99 MHz uplink including PL tone of 67.0 and 437.80 MHz down. This will be performed in low power mode. We should also note that an EVA is planned for that week. Expedition 18 Commander Mike Fincke and Flight Engineer Yury Lonchakov plan to perform a spacewalk on December 22. As per standard procedure, the ISS Ham radio system will be turned off for the EVA. Dec 28-Jan 3 we plan to reconfigure the Crossband repeater for a special experiment. This will be a test of our L-Band uplink capability, which, to date, has not been proven out. PCSAT status report.

PCSAT status: For the first time in 7 years, we were not able to fully recover PCSAT during this full sun period despite the efforts of a number of dedicated volunteers around the world. Full sun periods occur when passes are at sunrise and sunset to earth observers. PCSAT gets sun 24 hours a day then, but only on the side panels. It is an interesting conundrum that when PCSAT is in full sun its average power is worst because the sun only hits the side panels, but if we can recover it once, then we can lower the average power and keep it alive. (we have been unsuccessful this time). On the other hand, a month later, the peak power available (on the best -Z panel) occurs during the worst case eclipses, (midday passes in the Northern hemisphere) so then there are strong packets for 20 minutes or so, Recovery is very reliable, but useless since then 15 minutes later she goes into 35 minute darkness and she dies. But she is useable during the middle of those sunny side passes which will be approaching in mid January. Anyway, this is not the last you will hear of PCSAT, but there will probably not be any more several week full sun, full recovery periods as there have been in the past. Remember that PCSAT has its best panel pointing along the magnetic field lines of the Earth towards the South Magnetic pole of the Earth, and so if you are good at 3D visualization, it is easy to see what is happening. There is a plot on the PCSAT web page, and when I get back to it, I will make another plot showing what it looks like during the peak period above. See www.aprs.org/pcsat.html Sun angle is worsening for my location, and this being nearest the winter solstace, the sun won't get any better. Full sun period in Feb will not be as good as this one was. The good news is that I think a colleage of mine will develop a better magnetic attitude model so we can know better exactly when is the max power on the spacecraft. It should be entirely predictible, so that we do not waste any time on poor angles. I really appreciate all the efforts of so many operators. This is my last day for this season due to some long expected family news last night I will be on travel to Alabama for the next weeks and doubt I will get much email access. Kenwood TH-D7 split Tx/Rx

Hi folks, Ok, so in the manual it says that I can set up the D7 to transmit on one side, and receive on the other, with APRS. With the ISS seemingly in that sort of mode, this would seem to be the configuration to use. APRS menu 2-M gives me that choice, but when I have either of the spilt modes selected (Tx-A, Rx-B, or Rx-A, Tx-B), I can't turn on APRS mode. Packet turns on, but not APRS. I tried transmitting blind (simplex) on the last pass, but it would be good to be able to hear what's going on too. What is the magic spell to run on split operations with APRS? So, how exactly does that go again? Kenwood TH-D7 1200 bps packet (I think someone said that it's on 145.825 right now) Packet Path set to "ARISS" Message set to "email2 me Test message through ISS" (where the "me" alias has already been set up) I just tried this on the 00:00z pass over the west coast. PCSAT Recovery status

PCSAT Recovery Status: Still no joy on recovery. Still too many unattended stations overloading the bird while we are trying to command it. I get command on the first ascending pass each day (PCSAT over atlantic, out of view of most USA). But next passes are impossible. Today, I plotted packet-attempts-by-PCSAT (noise bursts by ear) and noticed an astonishing 3 times heavier load over the USA compared to over the atlantic. Of these dozens of packet attempts, only 2 decoded. But now that I can tell by ear the huge difference in attempted packets by PCSAT when it is over the USA, I can see why we are having problems. And the sun angle gets worse every day for a chance at recovery. So don't hold your breath this operating period. Have fun on ISS, its working great! And if you have an unattended beacon via W3ADO-1, please turn it off. Thanks Bob, Wb4APR

Sadly no bird now works on 1k2 baud (store and forward) Just think of series of Cube digital sat to be build by AMSAT orgs The cost =for sure less than all eggs in one basket satellite The joy = for sure every one will be happy and busy, many Will cut out the DSL line from their shack Benefit = our own satellite net. With the wx getting more "cabin feavorish", the voices in my head are saying we should have an impromptu AMSAT contest where the exchange would be your grid square and your AMSAT member number.
