Dimitrios; I own two of them. I have the UX97 and UX98 1.2 and 2.4 GHz modules (very hard to locate in US). Although I have not been active since moving a few years ago, I have been very happy with the IC970. Very easy to operate, excellent LCD panel to look at and great performance. One troublesome area is the UHF VCO. One of mine went out of lock and it was necessary to disassemble the sheild and replace the tuning capacitor, Getting it retuned was a snap. Hardest part was the small bottom shield to remove and replace. I think the only drawback is lack of availability of the microwave band modules. Printed copies of Brit publicity of Garriott flight

After sending one to Richard Garriot himself c/o Space Adventures, one to ariss-eu and some to friends in the UK, I have 3 copies left of the newspaper "Market Harborough Herald and Post" that printed 3 of Richard Garriott's ARISS SSTV pictures. The text is on a previous posting - this has 3 smallish photos I received off air. If anyone wants a copy - worldwide - please email me off line. Personally I always like the complete edition of a newspaper so that you can see what else was thought to be important in that community at that time. I'll cover postage costs. AO-51 Mode

Hey Everybody! OK, Drew....is it possible to put AO-51 into the same unique mode that AO-16 is in (145 FM UP/435 SSB DOWN)??? I would be interested in trying it on AO-51. How about more QRP on the 2nd Channel? OR...Can the Up and Down links be reversed...as in 435 up and 145 down??? AMSAT symposium - what happened?

Hello to all those who attended Atlanta, Apart from a new vision statement and a BOD meeting, did anything actually happen at Atlanta? I haven't seen the usual "What a great symposium.", "It was great to catch up with ...", "I was inspired by the ...", "Demonstrations of... were held", "Hundreds of new members", or "Well done to the organisers" type messages. I haven't even seen the usual announcement for the 2009 event. Perhaps there won't be one - that would be newsworthy in itself. Don't get me wrong - I'm not knocking the event. AO-51 mode V/S

Although I missed a couple days of the satellite in V/S, once I got the antenna up, I had a LOT of fun on the mode. Learned a lot, some of which I'd like to share here. I was using a California Amplifier 130099 downconverter with an 18 inch linear polarized yagi which is attached to the converter. The amp was modified according to the instructions given by K0SM on the Rochester VHF Group's website. Article is at http://www.rvhfg.org/articles/k0sm/basic%20mods.php There is also a "block downconverter" out there that has an N connector for attaching whatever antenna you might want to put on it. If its for MMTS, chances are its capable of being modified. The unit I have is identical except the antenna is part of the unit. There is about 20 dB of "excess" front end gain, so you can place this at the end of a long piece of lossy cable or put an attenuator on the radio side of the bias tee, but that is not totally necessary. The IF is 123.200 MHz for the downlink, plus or minus doppler if the crystal in the unit is netted perfectly. Mine is off about 30 KHz or so (at 2400). Using the linear polarized antenna in the vertical plane worked very well for me. I have the antenna at fixed elevation about 20 degrees or so above the horizon, on the same mast as the V/U antenna. IF is the FT-817nd. I get one significant fade during the pass which I'll mention later. Everything was manually operated , tuning and antenna. And with a VHF uplink, there isnt enough doppler to be concerned about. First thing I noticed is the very light activity on this transponder. Lack of S band gear is probably the reason. These MMTS units are available. I've seen them at hamfests real cheap - $5 - $10 each. They are VERY easy to modify, taking about 15 - 20 minutes each. The modifications are foolproof and require no test equipment. After modifying mine, I had it tested at a friend's in Pittsburgh, and found it to be quite sensitive with no additional modification. they do, however require a minimum of 15 volts, so running them portable presents a few additional problems, but nothing more than a pack of AA batteries wont cure. Now for the actual operation... Working the satellite, I found that there is a major fade that lasts about 30 seconds or so as the bird passes by. This happens at all elevation angles, so I would assume it has to do with the satellite's antenna orientation in regard to my polarization. There are also fades that vary with each pass and time of day. My early hypothesis for this might be local tropo effects that reflect the signal. I noticed no such effects during a rainy, windy pass, which usually produce no conditions such as that. The lower the bird gets to the horizon, the more pronounced the effect is. I can work the bird consistently down to 6 degrees elevation, and that may be because of ground clutter or the elevation angle of the antenna. The antenna beamwidth is wide enough that I can work the bird from about 40 degrees to about 6 degrees above the horizon. The signals are generally quite strong and 100% full quieting for most of the pass. Trees absorb the signal almost totally, so I can only use the bird for a little more than half a pass, as I have trees to the south. As the leaves go away, perhaps it will shoot thru the bare trees, but as of this session, I didnt start picking up the bird until the bird was clear of the trees. Anyway, I had some nice QSO's on mode S while in V/S mode. I'm building a mode L uplink from scratch, but its a long way from being finished. I wanted to share my experiences with the group, and perhaps entice some more operators to set up for this mode. A load of fun, and so many are missing out especially since for V/S, all that is needed is a simple surplus receive converter and a rig that will receive 123 mhz. Michael Heim ARS KD0AR

Hi, This format is completely unreadable on my 'text only' mail program. Looking at the header I note that it's encoded as BASE64. It also appears to have been auto-converted by amsat.org from Quoted-printable format to BASE64. Some time ago, I enquired about BASE64 and was told that it was an obsolete system. I apologize for the formatting issues. Typically I use Eudora to send out ANS. However, I had to replace my router shortly before leaving for the symposium and discovered the new one from Linksys wouldn't run my VPN software. The result was that I tried using my ISPs webmail interface to get the news out from my hotel room. It looked OK here but obviously did not work as well as I'd hoped. AH...I checked back to the older bulletins and the font has changed from Times New Roman. It also may have gone up a font size. Looks a little different, and "might" be harder to read. Given the limited availability of ISS computer systems, the ARISS team will continue to utilize the VC-H1 well after Richard's flight. So don't be surprised if you see some VC-H1 SSTV operations from Mike Fincke, KE5AIT, during his stay as the commander of Expedition 18. The ARISS team apologizes for the temporary shut-down of the ARISS SSTV server. They have been a victim of their own success in that the site has been overwhelmed by the popularity of Richard's SSTV images. Hopefully the system will be operational very soon. ARISS Development and Operations As a reminder to all, the ARISS team is an international volunteer working group that is sponsored by three major entities in each ISS region---the National Amateur Radio Society, the International AMSAT organization and the National Space Agency. The 5 regions that comprise the ISS development are Canada, Europe Japan, Russia, and the USA. In the USA, the two ham radio sponsors are the ARRL and AMSAT-NA. NASA is the USA space agency sponsor. Over 12 years ago, the formulation of the ARISS working group was a specific request from NASA. They wanted the amateur radio community to internationally consolidate into one team all the development and operations of the ISS Ham radio system. FO-29 telemetry status?

Greetings, Does anyone know if there are problems with FO-29's telemetry system? The structure temperatures seems to be very cold during the daytime portion of the passes here, even allowing for the long eclipse periods. All four structure temperatures are about -12 with one structure temperature jumping to +13 on one pass. DK3WN's 6 Oct captured telemetry on his web site blog page seems to confirm these very low temperatures at least on that date. Anyone have any other information on this? Thank you. Jim (N8OQ)

I use audacity software for recording and editing. IC 910H same band problem

I must be doing something wrong here. I cannot switch the IC 910H to tx and rx in the same (2 metre ) band while doppler tracking using HRD. Carlos showed me a tick box on his version of HRD that enabled single band working on his TS2000 but it's not present on my program and I've just downloaded the latest version. The only change I can see in the latest version is that the option to change bands between main and Sub for TX and Rx has been grey-ed out. And I can't understand the help section that says I can set both bands to Main - because they are greyed out. Any help gratefully received. andy G0SFJ

There were great talks yesterday (Friday) and lot of informal chatting about satellites over the day, evening, and into the wee hours of the night. Great fun and interesting conversation. And yes you can have intelligent, fruit full QSO without being smashed. So pull up your blind and see the big picture beyond your imagination, old timers know what iam talking about. Henk "Modification of the Cushcraft 416TB (2x8 elements) 70cm antenna" (add switchable circular polarization) Introduction Cushcraft provided with the 416TB antenna a polarization 'phasing harnesss' that allows either fixed LHCP or RHCP. For years I used RHCP and was fully satified with the performance (AO51, VO52, FO29, Cute-II, ...) I could clearly notice the signal strength difference between 435.300 (RHCP, strong) and 435.150 (LHCP, hardly audible). Then when AO51 started to apply repeater modes on 435.150 as well, which I now was starting to miss out on, I wanted to be able to switch between LHCP and RHCP. Design As I had only one relay available (these projects alway start on Sundays when shops are closed), the option of HOR/VER/LHCP/RHCP was dropped and only switching between LHCP/RHCP remained. >From various sources on the internet and an article of Domenico Marini, I8CVS, ("Switching four Polarizations on a 70cm Crossed Yagi", AMSAT Journal May/June 2007) I derived the set-up needed for the Cushcraft 416TB, which has both antennas at 1/4 lambda distance separated from eachother (A - B in the diagram below): http://www.pa3guo.com/cushcraft_416tb_pol_system.jpg The original Cushcraft harness basically consisted of Z1 and Z2 only, and RCHP vs LHCP was selected by swapping the conductor & shielding at the feedpoint of the front dipole. In the new above set-up, LHCP is obtained when the relay is excited (signal travels through Y2), else the resulting polarization is RHCP. Z1 and Z2 form the impedance transformers, which transform the 50 ohm of each dipol into 100 ohm, which are then connected in parallel resulting in 50 ohm. Y2 is the phase shifter: if enabled the signal from/to the front dipol is shifted 180 degrees (1.2 wave). Implementation For Z1 and Z2 I used RG59B/U (75 ohm): V=0.66: ((300/435)*0.66)/4= 11.4cm. X1 and X2 just need to be identical in length, I have used 40 cm Aircell (50 ohm). u1 and u2 need to be identical in length, u2 is a small piece of copperwire between the relay pins (~4mm). Y1 needs to be 1/2 wave longer as u2, I used Aircell (50ohm): V=0.83: (((300/435)*0.83)/2)+4mm= 29.0cm U1 is created by soldering the conductors of the two coax cables directly together and putting a closed copper shielding around that (by soldering the shieldings/braids of the two coax cables together and around the conductor) to form again a shielding. Refer to point 'u1' in the picture of the box below. Domenico Marini advices in his article to use proper coax relay and in general describes a more perfect system, including HOR/VER/LHCP/RHCP options. I have chosen a much cheaper and simpler implementation, which is most likely also less accurate. So for those that want to built this system as well, I recomment them to read the article of Domenico first and decide themselves how to built. Do not only refer to my implementation described here. I have used a simple SDS S2-12V relay, which is expected to work up to 450 MHz. Key is to keep all wires as short as possible. All coax braids (shieldings) have to be soldered together via the shortest possible way. See the yellow circle in the picture of the box. Parallel to the relay I have mounted an LED, which makes it easy to be able to see without a voltage meter (eg outside standing at the roof) if the 12V is present in the box or not: http://www.pa3guo.com/pol_switch.jpg Again: using a real coax relay would have been much better. Using a waterproof metal box instead of my plastic one would have been better as well, but I didn't have one and it would have made the construction much heavier. But as I am not aiming for an EME station I decided to give this implementation a try. Now I can; by selecting the correct polarization. - Signal strength of the 435.300 downlink has not decreased compared to the past (the fixed Cushcraft harness). Conclusions With a few pieces of coax, a waterproof housing and a relay a Cushcraft 416TB can be upgraded from fixed Circular Polarization (CP) to (remote) switchable Left or Right Hand Circular Polarization (LHCP or RHCP). Implementation has been done using spare parts as I needed LHCP/RHCP to become available quickly. However, a next time, instead of a normal relay, I will use a coax relay as it is expected to give better mechanical stability and improved RF performance. Hi all, The text file (_http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ariss/news/arissnews.txt_ (http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ariss/news/arissnews.txt) ) indicates whether an ARISS contact is expected to be retransmitted via Echolink, IRLP (there are 2 ways to listen if using IRLP, more down below), or any other media. This is purely at the discretion of the ham crew and the school where the contact is to take place if the contact is to be a direct one. We at ARISS encourage this to happen but we are not in control; the local hams and the school are. So when I say should be on Echolink and IRLP; it means exactly that. We have been told that the Armada contact will have audio provided to both Echolink and IRLP; but there can always be a last minute problem that will prevent that from happening. If the contact is a telebridge, then just about all of the contacts are retransmitted via Echolink and IRLP. For some schools, the use of Echolink or IRLP is a last minute thing; so sometimes we don't know until very late. When I post my announcements to the various bulletin boards, I try to indicate whether Echolink and IRLP is a possibility. Sometimes Kenneth gets later last minute news and he posts that info. Not all schools have the ability to even do one or the other. Many of the schools do not have an IRLP or Echolink repeater nearby. With Echolink you could go directly to a computer and then to the Echolink system; unfortunately, many schools have firewalls that prevent that from happening. I think for the Armada contact the audio will be going out via Skype and then our IRLP and Echolink ham interfaces will pick up the audio and retransmit it to the 2 systems. As Kenneth pointed out, you can listen to the contact via the IRLP website at the Discovery Reflector. Or if you have an IRLP repeater nearby, go to 9010 . Everyone should be aware that there is a delay between real time and when the audio comes out of IRLP. Sometimes it is about 2 minutes; it could be more or less. The best place to find information of any contact is to wait for the announcements that are sent out by Kenneth or me (usually I have the first posting). We are as close as one can get to the latest news. Millionaire space tourist Richard Garriott this week sent colour pictures to Andy Thomas from the International Space Station in orbit. Richard is legendary NASA astronaut Owen Garriott’s son, now a multi-millionaire who made his fortune with computer games. As a space tourist he sends radio pictures “live” from the space station while it is in space. The pictures are captured by radio amateurs - hams - across the world. Market Harborough radio ham Andy Thomas received a number of images live from the space station last weekend. He said: “These are stunning colour photos live from the International Space Station. “There are the tops of clouds over England, and then you can see the whole of France and Spain from the porthole of the space station. On the next orbit, Richard Garriott turns the camera away from the porthole and you can see the astronauts working inside. Sometimes they look upside down - but there’s no up or down without gravity. The camera system works like a webcam. It takes a photo then sends it over ham radio for 30 seconds. Computer sotware then decodes it. There is a new photo every 30 minutes." It's difficult to explain the mission to local journalists, and some of it as printed is just plain wrong, hi, but I hope I have done Richard's "ham radio" mission some justice. The point of the story for me was the photos - I haven't seen the print edition yet but will source it tomorrow and Saturday, hopefully there will be the great photos from Richard received last weekend. Seems to have been a small problem up there as the first image started before the TX keyed up and only a quarter of the second image was sent before the TX went off. I had a great view of them streaking across the sky this morning while I listened to their carrier and then some tweeting (SSTV). . .I heard them ID in CW mode too which was a first for me . . . the signal was not as strong as on previous passes either but I could see it . . . it was at 18 degrees and I stepped out of the shack into the cold and there it was . . . of course I have had a lot of experience seeing before so that was easy . . . . the sky was clear and Orion was beautiful as it always is in the Southern Sky. Fixed antenna for ISS reception?

At the moment I've been receiving the SSTV and voice signals from the ISS with a homebrew omni on a pole in my back garden. I don't really have the room to put up a tower, and since the house is rented I suspect the landlord would have some pithy words to say about digging up a chunk of the garden and pouring a plinth. How well would an aerial with a cardioid pattern such as an HB9CV work? Since the ISS is never much above 30 degrees this far north (IO75) I doubt I'd need to worry about elevation. How well would just adding a 144MHz preamp to the omni work? How have other people solved this, without recourse to big rotators and things? Gordon

ARISS Update October 21, 2008

All, I think you all can agree that this has been a stellar and an historic week for Amateur Radio on the International Space Station! Speaking on behalf of the ARISS international team of volunteers and the AMSAT community, we really appreciate the overwhelming flood of positive comments that we have received from the ham radio community and the general public regarding the ham radio operations on ISS this past week. Collectively, we have all made history..starting with Richard, W5KWQ and his father Owen, W5LFL and continuing with all of you that participated and/or volunteered in his ISS journey. And along the way, we have sparked the imaginations of thousands of students. Got more interest in satellite operations. And, I understand, excited some youths to the point where they are now licensed. Richard Garriott, W5KWQ has been extremely prolific on the ARISS ham radio system, making hundreds of voice contacts, operating the packet system during the crew sleep times and transmitting hundreds of SSTV images throughout the day. He put the newest ARISS hardware, the Kenwood VC-H1 to good use, performing the vast majority of contacts with this hardware system coupled with the Kenwood D700 Transciever. The remaining SSTV downlinks were performed with the software-based SSTV system---using either the SpaceCam software or MMSSTV software that are on-board ISS. Given the limited availability of ISS computer systems, the ARISS team will continue to utilize the VC-H1 well after Richard's flight. So don't be surprised if you see some VC-H1 SSTV operations from Mike Fincke, KE5AIT, during his stay as the commander of Expedition 18. The team apologizes for the temporary shut-down of the ARISS SSTV server. We have been a victim of our own success in that the site has been overwhelmed by the popularity of Richard's SSTV images. We hope to get the system operational very soon. This may take a URL change, so please check the listservs and the ARISS SSTV blog http://www.ariss-sstv.blogspot.com/ for updated information. http://www.ariss.org will also carry updates. ARISS Development and Operations As a reminder to all, the ARISS team is an international volunteer working group that is sponsored by three major entities in each ISS region---the National Amateur Radio Society, the International AMSAT organization and the National Space Agency. The 5 regions that comprise the ISS development are Canada, Europe Japan, Russia, and the USA. In the USA, the two ham radio sponsors are the ARRL and AMSAT-NA. NASA is the USA space agency sponsor. Over 12 years ago, the formulation of the ARISS working group was a specific request from NASA. They wanted the amateur radio community to internationally consolidate into one team all the development and operations of the ISS Ham radio system. This specific request from NASA, and ultimately the other space agencies, was to provide a single focus of ham radio on ISS within the amateur radio community and within the space agencies. As a result, the 5 international delegations that make up ARISS tightly coordinate the day-to-day mission operations as well as the strategic hardware development planning and implementation. The success of this past week would not have been realized without this tight coordination, particularly between our Russian colleagues, led by Sergey Samburov, RV3DR and our international operations team, led by Will Marchant, KC6ROL. Individuals are always welcome to volunteer their support to ARISS through their regional delegation. Voice QSOs We have received some reports of individuals providing advice to the ISS on-orbit crew or making specifc requests to the ISS crew to change or modify the ARISS hardware, on-board software or ham radio operations. The ARISS team would like to remind the amateur community that we all have a duty to the international space agencies to coordinate ISS ham radio operations through ARISS. Our advice to you is that if you have a specific request or idea, that you forward it to one of the ARISS international delegates or ARISS team leaders. These individuals are identified on the ARISS web site http://www.ariss.org. Also, please remember that there are a *lot* of hams that would like to get their QSO with the ISS (including me!) So please use courtesy and keep your contact short. And once you have made a contact, please do not go for a repeat.despite the intense temptation to do so. I think you all know that this is an "open" hobby. So all are listening in, observing and remembering your operating habits. Tuesday 10-21-08 NABS, Richard Garriott (aka W5KWQ), has been very busy this past week. Every ISS pass over the Eastern North America has had either space to ground SSTV or voice contacts. (except during sleep times). Sunday, Monday and Tuesday he worked mostly voice contacts. It took me three days to finally get a QSL from him at 1106Z this morning !!! I bet he had a pile-up on his hands. Does anybody know how /if Richard will work QSL cards ? //Bob - KB5YZG //

beginner question re: uplink power

hello, I have a beginner question. I am in the process of setting up my first satellite station. My initial investment is minimal and I have chosen to start out with a pair of 2m and 70cm omni antennas on the roof. To help out a bit I am also adding a mast mount preamp on each antenna. To protect the preamps they will be switched out of line by a RF sense switch (one for each amp). For reference the two preamps and the pair of RF switches are all made by Ramsey (I know there are better preamps, but not available in my current budget). I am keeping this initial adventure limited to the LEOs (and ISS, etc.). _The question: _ When I assemble the RF switches I must choose a RF range for the switch to work within. The range is determined by the choice of a specific resistor. The default three ranges suggested are 0-10 watts, 10-30 watts, and 30-100 watts. I would be able to change the range later but it would require removing the unit from the mast. So... not having any experience (yet),_ what uplink power range is recommend for non-gain antennas?_ Is there one range that should cover the LEOs? If not, how much should I expect the required uplink power needs to vary across various satellites? Is it different for each band? I have read that it is always best to never be louder than the beacon and that's fine. I'm just needing to know where to start off my hardware choices. This is a great mode I agree. I just need to group the S and L band antennas together. Right now they're on separate towers and I'm extra busy tuning separate radio dials and antenna controllers for each pass. Need an extra hand for the mic. All, I'm speaking for myself here but I hope some of the sentiments expressed below will be felt by you all. I'm sure when Richard leaves for home on the 23rd it will be too soon for many Amateurs around the world who have enjoyed his boundless exuberance during his stay on the ISS. Richard's (and the support teams) contribution has been immense. His QSOs have been carried out succinctly and with professionalism, his voice filled with contagious enthusiasm. The SSTV has been a triumph again due to the unstinting dedication of Richard and his support team. As one of those who enjoyed the privilege of a QSO with Richard and the receipt of some 40+ SSTV pictures I would like to publicly thank him and the team for what has been a superbly enjoyable period of unprecedented activity. There are some advantages to living in bush Alaska and 400 miles from civilization. This Sunday at 2106 UTC I made successful contact with Richard Garriott on the International Space station. Mr. Garriot told me I was his first contact in North America for that pass. I had him all to myself for three minutes before the space station passed over the lower 48. This was definitely a QSO I'll always remember! Thanks to all those who have and continue to support ARISS. I have been visually tracking the ISS for several years. One of my other interests is in star gazing. Now I can say that I have talked to the BIG BIRD too. At 1242 GMT Richard came back : " will the station in Cincinnati come back". Well I decided that he was hearing a lot of alphabet soup . . . . just numbers and letters and that something different might be useful in catching his ear . . . . so I used my city CINCINNATI. Well it worked. I have operated from the other side of pileups too and know that you appreciate having something differentiate A signal from the others. A friend of mine who lives about 10 miles from me has it all on a recording. Good luck to all of you who are trying to grab a quick QSO with Richard. I achieved one of my goals in Ham Radio. What command to use to get next 24hrs AOS/LOS for a particular satellite using predict server

Hello all Anyone more experienced with querying the predict server? The only documentation I have for querying it is the demo.c file which comes with predict. What I want to do, after I have built the list of satellites using the GET_LIST function is to build a list of AOS and LOS times for each satellite in say the next 24hrs. Is there a PREDICT command to do this? Closest I have seen is the PREDICT "SAT NAME" time command, but this gives me a prediction of the satellite position at a certain time. WD9EWK @ Tucson AZ hamfest (18 October) - report

Hi! I was at the Old Pueblo Radio Club hamfest in Tucson AZ on Saturday, 18 October 2008. It was a good event, with nice weather that morning. The hamfest was in the parking lot at Tucson's Kino Sports Complex (grid DM42me): http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=32+10.793+N+110+55.819+W&i… I had an AMSAT table at the event, with the help of Larry Brown W7LB. Along with the AMSAT table, I had demonstrations using 3 satellites - AO-51 (2 passes), SO-50 (1 pass), and VO-52 (2 passes). We also copied the SSTV transmissions from the International Space Station during 2 passes, hoping that we might hear voices on the 145.800 MHz downlink. The demonstrations were well attended. Since AO-51 was set up in the "JOTA" mode (uplink on 145.880 MHz FM, downlink on 435.300 MHz FM +/- for Doppler) for the weekend, I wanted to work any Scout groups that might be on the passes. If a Scout was available at the hamfest, I wanted to put the Scout on the radio to work either other Scouts or anyone else who might be on those passes. I did not have any Scouts around for the first AO-51 pass I heard at 1336 UTC. I - and a few others - worked KT4BSA in North Carolina on this pass. For the second AO-51 pass at 1511 UTC, I was able to put a Boy Scout on the mic. Jim Fagan KE7IDC, a Tucson ham and Boy Scout, made his first satellite contacts using my portable FM satellite station (IC-2720H at 15W, Arrow Antennas handheld 2m/70cm Yagi) at the hamfest. I held the Yagi and took care of adjusting the 70cm VFO to deal with Doppler, and Jim did the rest. He made a total of 7 contacts in the span of 5 minutes - two Canadians, one Mexican, and 4 US stations. Jim had fun, and I had fun helping him make those contacts. Last night, I sent Jim and his father an MP3 with that audio and Jim's 7 contacts. Besides the AO-51 passes, I was able to do my first demonstrations at a hamfest via VO-52. Using my two FT-817NDs and my handheld Yagi, I was able to make a few QSOs on the two passes I had. I tried to work FO-29, but had a lot of difficulty hearing its 70cm downlink over the intermod from military UHF radio systems at Davis-Monthan AFB a few miles/km east of the hamfest site. I apologize to those who were hoping to hear me on FO-29 Saturday morning, as I was not able to overcome that noise. I was able to work one SO-50 pass along with the others I've already mentioned, ending up with 20 QSOs for WD9EWK (plus 7 for KE7IDC) at the hamfest. Not a bad morning. After the hamfest, I drove to a spot south of Tucson straddling a grid boundary (grids DM41mx and DM42ma): http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=32+N+110+59.649+W&ie=UTF8&… This location is approximately 15 miles/25km south of downtown Tucson along the I-19 freeway. A casino, Indian reservation, copper mine, and an ICBM missile silo-turned-museum are all nearby. The Mexican border is only 50 miles/80km south of this spot. I wanted to work AO-16 from somewhere in southern Arizona, and possibly an AO-51 pass, before returning home. I was able to make 18 contacts from here - 14 via AO-16, 4 via AO-51 (including a Scout group in Texas using the special call W5S). Thanks to all who made contacts with me (and KE7IDC) at the hamfest, and to those who worked me from DM41/DM42 later in the day. QSLs for those who worked WD9EWK at the hamfest went in the mail this morning. I'm not the QSL manager for KE7IDC; his address on sites like QRZ.com is correct. Hi folks, one member just reminded me about what is the chance one station uplinking one picture uniterrupted? Maybe we could cordinate here and use are calls as a your turn my turn such as abzzz goes first as his starts with A, or use the last letter of the call such as kc8gkf and everyone with f in there call (last letter) thats there day to xmit up. something like that I think we could work out. That would cut down on the stations trying to xmit up. Or someone could pass out times to the users (get a list here) to xmit up. Anyother ideas? kc8gkf
