xmit sstv to the ISS

Hi Folks, was just thinking about this again and these last two passes were quiet so maybe that would of been a good time to xmit up. hopefully they have the gear on and would maybe qsl us somehow or even not. I wonder if anyone xmitted to the ISS sstv the last two passes. Everyone was sitting there listening/waiting like me probley. Anyway I am sure they will let us know if and when they want us to xmit up. I heard someone mention it here earlier about maybe a day to xmit up. Would be nice to have a way to take turns. I think most of the users are here on this bb. maybe not. kc8gkf

Today woke up at the SSTV sounds. Two mages: #1 was a noisy one, very dark with like three light bulbs and #2 saw like a lenses, reminded me of Hal 2000 from the 2001 movie . . . . and in between, got out and saw ISS pass to the east from south to north!! A 2-0n-1treat!!!! Angel Santana - WP3GW

Hey folks, Mike, WB9L, and I worked cross-satellite at 22:50 UTC. Mike was on AO-51 to the northeast, while I was working AO-16 to the southwest. I heard some other stations that I know were working AO-51, but didn't get any other contacts. Icom ic-820H Problems

Hi, I have an Icom 820H that is having some issues with transmit/receive. The radio just acts funny, receive audio level very low, but at the same time the key tones are normal audio level. The display won't keep a freq on it, when powered on the frequency appears, then disappears after a few seconds. The radio won't transmit and when I tune to a local 2 meter beacon, nothing is heard. I've double checked power supply voltage, checked that all ribbon cables are properly seated, and done a factory reset without any luck. If anyone has any troubleshooting tips for me, please send me an email. Radio was stored for a while and just turned on for use. Thanks in Advance, Chad N0YK

Very good points, Tim. Comments on vertical antennas. First define vertical: 1) If you are referring to a high-gain FM base station antenna, then I would NOT recommend using one (because the gain compresses the signal pattern down near the horizon - for better repeater operation at long range). 2) If you mean a simple 1/4 wavelength ground-plane whip (like a 19-inch mag-mount attached to a square of sheet steel for the ground-plane), then (if used with a preamp) it will work quite well at either 2m or 70cm on Leo's. Of course you need to use a preamp for the freq. band you desire to receive. I used a 19-inch mag-mt with P432VGA preamp to collect UHF telemetry from AO-51 shortly after launch. Also obvious is the need to provide bypass switching for preamp if you anticipate using the antenna for transmitting. The M2 eggbeaters are probably slightly better than (and a whole lot more $$$) a 19-inch whip as are other more advanced omnis such as: Lindenblad, and Quadrafillar Helix. But a simple little mag-mt 2m whip works great (especially with a preamp). For a home-based Leo station, I think they are fine. For portable (standing in the parking lot) operation the handheld Arrow is hard to beat. Well hams use the term "cross-band contact" to refer to a QSO made using two bands, where one band is the medium from station A to station B, and the other band is the medium from station B to station A. By logical extension, a "cross-satellite contact" is exactly what was going on here. Note that nothing stated a "cross-link" (or crosslink) between the satellites, or a "multi-hop" satellite contact. That's what you and Auke are referring to. Satellite Info for real time mobile operator

AMSAT Application Programmer wanted: For years there has been an APRS program that puts out local real-time satellites-in-view information to the front panels of mobile users with the D7 and D700 radios: www.aprs.org/APRSdata.html When a satellite comes into view, the user is given the satellite direction and range, and also the frequency and doppler all right there on the front of his radio if someone in the region is putting out the info on APRS. What is new, here is that we just realized that there are tens of thousands of additional handheld satellite radios that can also display this local information. The FT-51R and TH-78 radios can also display TEXT messages, and so with the right application written, these radios which are already used by many AMSAT satellite operators, can also receive these alerts while traveling, and thus enjoy more satellite time. Hi, Does anyone know how to drive the IF-100 via the parallel port? I am sure I am send the correct commands (I've looked in the WISP code) but am failing to get the hardware to recognise my commands. The same hardware works fine with an old DOS program. Dear AO-7 Bandits, As most of you know, I've always been QRP on AO-7 and due to the mountains very often used them as passive reflectors - using knife edge propagation ... conditions permitting. However, due to the stringent antenna restrictions imposed on me recently and the dismantling of the satellite array I now have to reduce power even more and utilise an Arrow aerial indoors fromt a basement apartment ... surrounded by mountains. What was previously a "challenge" ... has now become a *REAL* challenge, QRPp on AO-7. (One of my DXCC's is for QRP so don't laugh at me just yet). I expect to be QRV by Wednesday or Thursday so if you hear somebody knocking - it'll be me. Good news Joe ?? (K3SZH) ... put'cher cans on mate and have a lissen on the usual QRG. beginner question re: uplink power

hello, I have a beginner question. I am in the process of setting up my first satellite station. My initial investment is minimal and I have chosen to start out with a pair of 2m and 70cm omni antennas on the roof. To help out a bit I am also adding a mast mount preamp on each antenna. To protect the preamps they will be switched out of line by a RF sense switch (one for each amp). For reference the two preamps and the pair of RF switches are all made by Ramsey (I know there are better preamps, but not available in my current budget). I am keeping this initial adventure limited to the LEOs (and ISS, etc.). _The question: _ When I assemble the RF switches I must choose a RF range for the switch to work within. The range is determined by the choice of a specific resistor. The default three ranges suggested are 0-10 watts, 10-30 watts, and 30-100 watts. I would be able to change the range later but it would require removing the unit from the mast. So... not having any experience (yet),_ what uplink power range is recommend for non-gain antennas?_ Is there one range that should cover the LEOs? If not, how much should I expect the required uplink power needs to vary across various satellites? Is it different for each band? I have read that it is always best to never be louder than the beacon and that's fine. I'm just needing to know where to start off my hardware choices. Hello All, Just decoded my second set of telemetry from DO-64. So far I have heard the 145.870 beacon every pass. Unlike during the first 3 months when it was heard 1 pass in 10. A question for the designers - are the two beacons separate transmitters or just separate feeds to the one transmitter? The 145.870 is far more reliable. 73 de David VK5DG

I'll send you a couple of QSL's Brien, or more if you had more than one Boy Scout there....Let me know... Years ago we would make many contacts for the same event... When I was a Navy fighter pilot flight instructor at Pensacola 1947-48 I was an Air Scoutmaster, so perhaps my interest is a little higher....I'd give them rides in an R4D navy transport...C47 for other than navy.... Perhaps too late for the rest of the country by the time I could get on today, we'll try again next year.... The problem this time when I go to predict I get A message on the screen that says Information and X on the top It also tells me No Iridium loaded And the only option I have is say OK This means I can,t get the latest keps. I cant tell what they are. I have two on the power connector and nothing on the ground pin. I know they need to be changed. Can you help with this?? Hi folks, More pictures from ISS this morning. One blue-screen from the 15:29z pass, then two pictures out the window on the 16:00z pass. The 17:41z pass (just completed) I almost turned off the rig after a silent pass, when one picture was sent right at the end (about 5 degrees elevation). Still full quieting for most of the image, and I finally got the skew adjusted on my software (qsstv on Linux). Pictures uploaded to the ARISS site. While it's nice to see what they see out the window, I'd much rather have them turn the camera around and see the insides of the Station. Is that possible to request? Or, is the camera in an area of the Station where privacy would be a concern? Thanks to all who made this possible. My neighbors were by on Thursday during the morning school contact, and my wife turned up the volume so they could listen in (I was at work). They were amazed. And then to see the pictures, too. Apparently my 70 cm. Preamp is fried... Unhooked power to it just as the ISS flew over, and heard SSTV at 20 db over S9!!! Hey everyone, I hope as many of you as possible get a chance to work at least one of the satellites stations on the air for this JOTA weekend. I've worked two so far, and both contacts have been really cool. Both operators let scouts take the mic, and I'm sure those kids were thrilled to have stations calling them like they were. I'm sending 2 QSL cards to both stations - 1 with a note of thanks to the operator(s) who made the effort to get some scouts into orbit this weekend, and another to the scout I spoke to. Hi Clive, Good to hear you are listening for our satellite! We have not published the telemetry format and conversion equations at this point. The reasoning behind this is that all this has been incorporated in RASCAL, so you can just read if off the screen there. Unfortunately, tuning and getting RASCAL to lock properly turned out be harder than we thought. Therefore we have written a small manual on our website and you can find it at http://www.delfic3.nl/rascal/ under 'instructions'. The audio clip on our website is perfectly suited for this purpose and has in fact been used by ourselves and many radio-amateurs to get their set-ups up and running. Hi, I am trying to get some telemetry from DO-64 while it is in this mode. Unfortunately I missed the the initial period of TLM just after launch, owing to other problems. By the time I had solved these, DO-64 had switched into transponder mode! I've managed to get some packets using my hardware PSK decoder (G3RUH) and PK-88 TNC in KISS mode. However, I can't find any information about the format of the data or any telemetry equations. Where are these details located? I've had less success with RASCAL. It appears to be working, and I get short periods when it locks onto the signal, but no packets received. The indicated frequency seems to vary widely, and sync is often lost when a packet is transmitted. Is the audio clip on the Delfi-C3 website suitable for use as a test signal? Good Morning All: Is there any visible difference between the several available software sound-card solutions for decoding SSTV? Other than soundcard noise, I expect that the faster the soundcard samples, the better? I've been using MMSTV and really like it. Is SATPC32 supposed to switch the IC-910 to the correct VHF TX/RX frequencies (as it does for sats) in mode U/V? If so, how do you do it. I was just playing with the radio and software and it seems to command the RX frequency but the TX frequency isn't correct. I received a total of 3 SSTV transmissions today (17 Oct 2008) at grid FM18. The transmission at 2031z was mostly clear depicting the Soyuz module with Earth in the background. The other two earlier ones were pretty noisy/ghostly. Received using MMSTV in Robot36 format (auto selected). WD9EWK from Tucson AZ hamfest, Saturday (18 October)

Hi! I will be part of the AMSAT table at the Old Pueblo Radio Club's hamfest in Tucson AZ tomorrow. The hamfest is at the Kino Sports Complex on Ajo Way, east of I-10, in grid DM42me. During the hamfest, I am planning to do several satellite demonstrations as WD9EWK. For AO-51, I hope to have a Scout at the mic to contact other Scouts during those passes. If not, I will try to make contact with Scouts, in keeping with AMSAT's wishes for the AO-51 JOTA configuration this weekend. Besides AO-51, I plan on trying SO-50, FO-29, and VO-52. This will be the first time I will do demonstrations on non-FM satellites with my two FT-817NDs at a hamfest. On FO-29, I tend to end up around 435.850-435.855 MHz on the downlink. For VO-52, I generally work around 145.910-145.915 MHz on the downlink. Of course, if there are stations around these spots already, I will move to another spot on the passbands - probably a little higher - so my non-automated station doesn't QRM others. Since the ISS will be passing by in the morning, I will be listening during those passes. If someone is on the microphone up there making contacts, I will try to make a contact from the hamfest. I will send QSL cards to all stations that make contacts with WD9EWK from the hamfest. No need to send me anything first, if we make a contact tomorrow. 73! Hi Angelo, Very good advice, as usual, Dom... I replaced mine years ago, got mine out of the junk box, and it did not exactly make contact with some of the foil on the board...I just made a jumper from small diameter copper, and it has been up there for years...same thing if some of the traces are missing.. Well, life is weird. I'm not going to attend the hamfest tomorrow. Things are up in the air as of now about allot of things. I don't know which direction I am going. Up or down. Left or right. I had know problems hearing all audio here in EL09rk, San Antonio, Tx this morning. W5KWQ, Richard was talking to a group of kids answering there questions from a school. KLM polarity switch schematic

I have tried to work ISS on voice but no luck. I find this unusual as I have auto antenna and doppler control and more power then I need. I have never made a call to ISS or shuttle and not got an answer. I am guessing that either there is so many hams trying to work Richard, or he is listening on another frequency???? Perry WB8OTH

hi folks, those of you who are using mmsstv to decode sstv from the iss, what sstv settings are you using, such as demodulating method. pll,hilbert T.F. or zero crossings? and if so what are the other settings? any settings you are using to bring your pic in better, any help would be nice to have. thanks in advance. p.s. my pics are not coming in to well as of yet, its why I am wondering about the settings to help. kc8gkf

Hi all: Yesterday at 1204 UTC I did get an ISS image, and the interesting thing was that it had on Hurricane Omar, for which we were lucky only a few rains fell here. It was on Robot 36 and used MMSSTV and FT-857 w/ vertical AR-2. It's like a P4 with some noise. Today did not received or heard anything, but let's see. The delay between automatic transmissions is fixed at 3 minutes. Came home today after leaving the rig and the PC running all of last night and today to find that Windoze had downloaded an update and restarted my computer at some point. I forgot to turn on autosave on CPIX and completely forgot about automatic updates being on so I got nothing! Oh, well back to the drawing board. Michael, W4HIJ

ISS SSTV No Joy...

Just had a pass of about 42 degrees at 21:13 UTC over the eastern part of the U.S. Grid EM83 and heard nothing. No SSTV, no voice. Looks like I'm going to have to leave the rig and PC running unattended 24 hours a day to have a chance at snagging anything. I should be able to copy this with a vertical right? I'm having some problems with my AZ/EL rotators and don't want to leave them unattended. 73, Michael, W4HIJ

Another opportunity for cross-satellite

Hey Everyone, >From 22:48 UTC to 22:54 UTC later today (16 October), AO-16 and AO-51 will be "up together" again. AO-51, during that period, will cover much of the eastern U.S. and Canada, according to Orbitron. AO-16 will cover all of the western U.S. during that same period. Stations in the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest, please note - it appears as though Alaska stations may hear folks working the 145.920 uplink on AO-51 if they're working AO-16 after both kick me out of their respective footprints - in the 22:55-56 UTC area. I am going to work AO-16 that pass. That is, I will be transmitting 5 wats from my HT into an omni antenna at 145.920, and tracking AO-16 for receive using my Elk log periodic, handheld, at an FT-817ND to receive on UHF sideband. AA1PL banged into AO-16 from Rhode Island this morning, mobile. Anyone running an omni antenna could have their signals reach both satellites, and those stations pointing beams to reach AO-51 to the northeast have a chance to reach AO-16 from the back side. That's what happened during both of the cross-satellite contacts I've made so far, with WB9L and WA4NVM. hi folks, qsl NA1SS , got the call in the pic but not a very good pic. must of been a weak signal @18 degrees north. Will be there for the next good pass. Found out my rig must be on fm not dig mode for SSTV. (ft-857) By the way our 145.800 freq has lots of noise in my area of the world. (west Michigan) Wondering how it is in other areas. kc8gkf
