Hi all, heard voice contacts from ISS on 145.800. Signal very strong on handeld 4 elements yagi, but no way to pass with only 5W into this antenna. best 73 Frank IZ8DWF

Good Evening everyone....nice to take a break from politics, etc. On tonight's AO-51 QRP pass at 2330z pass, I was using my ever-faithful Icom 2AT as an uplink. At 1 watt, I was pretty amazed at how good it sounded in the downlink...and was able to work Drew, KO4MA, Dave, VP9/G1OCN in Bermuda, and Paul, N2BX. Is the ISS uplink freq for voice still 144.490 for the US? I can hear W5KWQ (Richard) talking to people but cant hear the other end even when the call is fairly nearby. Mike

Another cross-satellite contact!

Hey everyone, Between 11:48:48 UTC and 11:39:04 UTC this morning, I enjoyed another cross-band, cross-mode, cross-satellite (AO-16/AO-51) contact – this one with Rick, WA4NVM, in Memphis, Tenn. Rick’s beams were pointed east, and he heard me on AO-51’s 435.300 FM downlink. I was listening on 437.026 in sideband and, as usual, was hand-holding my Elk log periodic. It was pointed almost due west when I heard Rick call me. I had transmitted an ID with my callsign and “listening on AO-16.” I transmitted 5 watts from VX-7R HT into a 0-gain eFactor omni antenna, using the same 145.920 FM uplink for AO-16 that AO-51 uses. I first copied Gerry, VE4GTB, from Winnipeg at 11:35 UTC. I then heard Pete, AA1PL, confirm his first-ever satellite contact with Rick, KB1PAJ. Rick uses a handheld station for the FM satellites, so his signal wasn’t making the trip to AO-16. AA1PL, on the other hand, was loud, clear and strong – and he was mobile! I’ve emailed him to let him know that, because of the respective footprints of the satellites when I heard him, his signal extended from somewhere around 28 degrees west to about 144 degrees west – not bad for a mobile! I sent an MP3 clip, too. Here are the numbers regarding the N3TL-WA4NVM contact. I’ll use 11:39:00 UTC for reference since it was just slightly past mid-contact: AO-51 was at 7.3 degrees elevation to Rick’s east at a range of 2,377.198 km (1,477.122 mi). AO-16 was at 11.6 degrees elevation to Rick’s west at a range of 2,221.306 km (1,380.256 mi). AO-51 was at 15.8 degrees elevation to my east at a range of 1,795.391 km (1,115.604 mi). AO-16 was at 4.7 degrees elevation to my west at a range of 2,794.482 km (1,736.411 mi). What a hoot! Before closing - congrats to those who have worked NA1SS. ISS recording this morning?

I would be very grateful if anyone could offer a recording of this morning's 8:31 am pass of Richard Garriott's transmissions over the Gulf of Mexico (1331 UTC). I clearly recall listening to his father as he passed over in the Shuttle in the early 80's. I was parked then along the Cane River, in Natchitoches, La. Rig: Kenwood 7400A, Auto: Old Bonneville...leaky trunk....mobile whip. Today it was my pickup truck, 706mkIIG, and $4 worth of WA5VJB 4 ele beam on a pole in a stake box. Expensive rotator... Hi AMSATERS My Yaesu G 5500 Rotators us blowing fuses. The primary of the transformer has <.5 ohms of resistance implying a shorted primary. I tried to order a L3190011 transferor from Yaesu they told me that part is no longer available. Do you believe my diagnosis is correct and where do I get a replacement transformer? Thanks nick

VC-H1 cable

I have an original VC-H1, never even opened it. I did not buy the cable to hook it to my D7a, 700 or 710 (possible?) when available. Is there anywhere to get the cables now? I want to try and copy ISS SSTV with it. Mike Kb8zgl

To whom this may concern (Kenneth N5VHO ?): Thursday 10:45utc pass over Europe: With the very latest keps I monitored both 145.800 and 143.625. Late in the pass, a carrier appeared on 143.625. Also I heared now and then voice from another source (distorted) through that. Initially I believed this was a local station transmitting on 143.625. But: switching between HOR/VER/LHCP/RHCP gave exactly the same ratio of that carrier versus the voice/other signal... they must have identical polarization: too much coincidence to me. Then: the carrier faded down fast in the last 2 degrees elevation, like the ISS 145.800 also always does: the carrier must have come from ISS: I guess the D700 also has 143.625 programmed ? Conclusion: I suspect that maybe the Kenwood D700 onboard was transmitting on 143.625 and at the same time the astronauts tried via the other radio to reach Moscow (like they do every day). ISS voice contacts

It was as a thrill for me to just hear his voice and some SSTV signals. Sure I wanted to work him but many do too. I just wonder what it sounds like for him as he flys over a populated area ? I used phonetics Victoria Norway Echo in my W9VNE call sign. He came back ; is there a station from Norway calling ? Well his foot print was no where near Norway at the time as he headed South East over the USA. So just maybe he caught a little of my call. I too heard him say K8YSE but I never heard anything after that . Good Luck John, K8YSE I hope he recorded your call. He is super strong. I have an M Squared circular polarized yagi with 7 vertical and 7 horizontal. It has about 10 db gain. I could really track him with both azimuth and elevation very well. I have been a fan of the ISS for a long time watching it visually half a dozen times a year. My neighbors have been treated to it when I point out what it is I am watching . . . . . I remember 35 years ago when Skylab was scooting across the sky . . . my XYL and I went out to a dark sky area and were parked waiting for Skylab to appear. A cop came down the rural gravel road and wanted to know why we were parked there. I explained that we were waiting for Skylab and wanted to see it visually. He really looked at us like . . . . are you kidding me ? We then got out our driver licenses which showed the same address and showed him our wedding rings . . . then I said LOOK . . . . he was shocked . . . then he had this silly look on his face and said, " I'm sorry" .. . . as he drove away. Additional SSTV Information: The computer-based SSTV can also support SSTV picture taking using a USB camera. We don't anticipate Richard using this as his primary SSTV operations for his mission will be with the VC-H1. The USB camera was checked out over the weekend by the Expedition 17 crew, where they took photos of themselves and downlinked these to the ham community. VC-H1 kenwood SSTV camera plus access. FS

I have a like new VC-H1 that I bought new and have used very little. I bought all the factory cables at the same time. They include the connection for the Kenwood D7a/e handheld, the D700 mobile, and comport cable for computer control. I have the original 12 volt Kenwood wall power supply. I also have the VC-H1 manual. The software is on a 3.5 floppy and will run under Windows 95 and 98. I don't know about XP. I can copy it to a CD if needed. I still have a computer with a 3.5 floppy. If anyone is interested I would consider selling all this for $350.00. I got about 1/2 of an SSTV image on the earlier pass from CM87ux, but on the second pass, I had my recorder on and caught the downlink conversation from Richard as he was apparently carrying on some kind of voice exchange. SATPC32 CAT on TS-2000

Folks I am preparing for an ISS contact later this week, and historically we have used SATPC32 to do the Doppler correction. The last contact we did over here in the UK the SATPC32 Doppler correction broke, and despite hours of trying to get it to work again, it failed to work so I resorted to manual Doppler operation if required. A similar thing happened on another contact previous to that one. I now seem to be in the same boat again. After upgrading to 12.8 tonight, I did get it to work, but then in order to make room for another low port COM port for SSTV work I shifted the CAT for SATPC32 up to COM18 and since then I can't get the CAT to work again. I reverted back to COM2, and now on launch SATPC32 says it can't open COM2. If I switch to a COM port of 0, then the error clears but of course I can't use CAT as that disables it. Using sysinternal's Portmon, I can see the rotor serial port opening but no attempt is made to open COM2 or any other port. I can open COM2 (and COM18) using Hyperterminal. Portmon indicates that no other process has the COM ports open. I know you don't really need Doppler for the ISS, but Doppler correction is a prerequisite for ARISS contacts, and I'd like to get it working again. I'm happy to mess around with the .SQFs, if I knew which one(s) to tweak, and which parameter(s) to alter. 73, Howard G6LVB

Jamboree on the Air on AO-51, 18-19 October 2008

AMSAT-NA is again supporting the 51st Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) Scouting event by dedicating AO-51 operation to the event. For October 18th and 19th, AO-51 will be configured as a single channel V/U repeater, and all users are requested to standby for JOTA stations. Please limit QSOs to those between or involving at least one JOTA station during this weekend. The frequencies used for this weekend will be 145.880 FM uplink, and 435.300 FM downlink, no PL tone required. The mode change should occur at ~00:00 UTC on the 18th (Friday evening in the US) and run for approximately 48 hours. I'd like to wish the Scouts good luck operating via the AO-51 satellite for the event, and would like to encourage reports to be sent to the AMSAT-BB or directly to me at ko4ma(a)amsat.org. Delfi-C3 / DO-64 Status update October 14th 11:00 UTC

Hi all, as announced earlier, today we have successfully switched the Delfi-C3 / DO-64 satellite into basic mode. Delfi-C3 is currently transmitting 1200bit/s BPSK housekeeping telemetry on the primary downlink frequency of 145.870MHz (contrary to our earlier announcement which said 145.930MHz which is the other downlink transmitter). In this mode, AX.25 frames containing housekeeping telemetry are transmitted approx once every 4-5 secs, the rest of the transmission is filled with idle flags. We would like to encourage everyone to receive, decode and forward telemetry using the RASCAL software just like during the first three months of science mission, this will be greatly appreciated by the team. RASCAL can be downloaded at: http://www.delfic3.nl/rascal At this moment, we do not know how long the satellite will be in this mode, but it will at least be a couple of weeks. Hello all, I really HATE to do this but unless something drastic happens this week (IE...hitting the lottery) I am going to sell out of ham radio and electronics in general. I have been collecting satellite gear for the past few years and have not even used most of it. Alot of the items are brand new. ARR Preamps, M2 CP VHF and UHF antenna's, (the BIG one's) Rohn 45 tower parts, ect... The radio's are.. Kenwood TS-790A with 1.2Ghz and IF-232 computer module Yaesu FT-847 Both radio's are in excellent condition (8-9 out of a 10) I also have 3 service monitors and assorted test gear that I will be selling. 2 ea IFR 1000S and 1ea. Yes, I'm that sick. I'm working on solving the predicion problem with a pencil and paper. I've taken quite a bit of calculus, but that was quite some time ago. Please reply directly. I'll make sure your fine words get back to the list once the details are sorted out. I'd appreciate direct email replies and I'll summarize to the list. I have tracking software, I don't need to track via pencil and paper, I just want to know how to do it by hand. I'm refering to the ARRL book AMatuer Satellite Handbook (Davidoff) I'm starting with the Keplerian data for AO-7 from Keplerian Bulletin 78, ARLK078. The epoch time is Oct 10, 2008 at 15:45:01.72Z I attached the kep file for AO-7 for reference. Any reference to values is about AO-7 from that Keplerian Update. Here are my questions: First to get the terms and understanding correct -- the Mean Anomoly is listed as 320.9603 deg. Is this the value of E that is used on page 12-4 to 12-5, and I quote: "In an eliptical orbit, time from perigree, t is given by: t = ( T / 2pi) * (E - e *sin(E)) [ eq 12.10 ] where the angle E, known as the eccentric anomaly, is defined by the associated equations: E = 2 * arctan( sqrt( (1-e)/(1+e)) * tan ( (theta)/2 ) + (360deg * n) n = 0 when -pi <= theta <= pi or 1 when pi < theta <= (3pi)" OK, so it says E (the eccentric anomaly) is a function of theta and eccentricity. Eccentricy of the orbit is in the Keps. Let's just assume I'm trying to compute the lat/long of AO-7 at the epoch. Is the RAAN in the Keps the longitude of the satellite at the epoch? Is the mean anomaly the longitude of the satellite at the epoch? I need the value of E to compute the value of t for this reason: (skip ahead to page 12-18 from the Handbook mentioned above) Finding latitude of the satellite, phi, at perigree is: phi(p) = arcsin( sin(i) * sin(w) ) where i = inclination, w = angle between the ascending node and perigree. Using equation 12.23, to find that latitude of the SSP: phi(t) = arcsin ( sin(i) * sin( phi(t) + w) ) [Eq. 12.23 ] Is that a misprint? the value of phi(t) depends on phi(t) ? The gap here I'm trying to understand is, computing t (the elapsed time since the ascending node) so I can plug it into the formula for latitude [ phi as a function of t, phi(t) ] Summary of questions: Which data from the kep do I use to compute t based on equation 12.10 What does RAAN and Mean Anomaly mean at the Epoch? Is the bird at latitude zero at epoch? Computing a from Keplers laws, a = 31.25 * T^(2/3). Is this T the Anomalistic Period? Using that value of a, and eccentricity e, I can compute w_dot = 4.97 * (Req/a)^(3.5) * (5 * cos^2(i) -1)/ ((1-e^2)^2) [eq 12.13a] How does w_dot relate to ang of apogee from the kep data? Programming language recommendation?

We have a lot of folks here who do programming at a variety of levels. After a 20+ year hiatus, I am looking to get back into doing a bit of programming. The intent is not to get into it at a professional level, but to be able to rip off quick and dirty small programs. Data acquisition, taking the output of a program and merge and reformat it for specific purposes, which of course I can do in some cases with Excel, are a couple of things which come to mind. It will need the ability to interact with external hardware. However, the primary purpose is as a brain stretcher for someone who once thought F*RTR*N was a real language. I am tempted to say that I am looking for the current generation BASIC, but I am want something a bit beyond that, though of course the ability to print "Hello World" with less than 10 lines of code is a plus. ;) And it needs to be something I can get into using a free or low cost compiler. I am not much interested in spending a few hundred dollars. People have recommended Python, older versions of Delphi, early version of C, etc, as what I should do. Well, maybe. "Flea Power" follow up

Hey everyone, Over the weekend, I ended up working four passes of AO-51 running 300 milliwatts out of my Yaesu VX-7R HT, which was powered for these passes by 2 AA Duracell batteries. I used the Elk 2M/440L5 log periodic antenna - handheld - for all four passes. Here are some numbers: I made a total of 11 contacts in the 4 passes (1 with 4 contacts, 1 with 3, and 2 with 2). The average elevation of the satellite during these 11 contacts was 34.1454 degrees. The average range was 1,364.0726 kilometers/847.5954 miles. A contact with KG4ZLB at 00:26 UTC on 12 October found the satellite closest to me of any contact – 53.5 degrees at a range of 959.810 kilometers/596.3995 miles. A contact with WD9EWK at 01:09 UTC on 11 October found the satellite at its most distant for any contact – 12.3 degrees at a range of 2,197.771 kilometers/1,359.418 miles. That was fun! I’m now really looking forward to the last week of the month, when the “regular” FM pair is scheduled (based on what I read on the Web site Sunday night) to be configured for SSB up and FM down – the opposite of AO-16’s current, very unique mode (the downlink actually is dual sideband, and many of you likely have read in AMSAT Journal coverage of AO-16’s rebirth). 73 to all, Tim – N3TL AMSAT Member No. 36820 Athens, Ga. – EM84ha

AO-51 SIGNAL?

Hi All, I've been noticing that when AO-51 passes me, I have a much harder time receiving a decent signal from it. It does not matter what type of antenna I have ( beam or vertical). K8KFJ wrote that he disagreed with my statement that there is not a great deal of interest in CW on the HF bands. I had my first CW QSO 56 years ago last week on Oct 9th (1952). My log shows 99 % of my activity is CW until I got back on the satellites. My perspective and observation is a long one when measured in time. I do not know how many QSOs I have had over the years but it certainly exceeds 100,000. I have had 40,000 using my call in the last 20 years based upon my logs. I used to call CQ on Forty Meter CW and get answers within a minute or two. Now I call for 10 minutes or more and get no answers. Oh YES, you are correct Garie (K8KFJ), there are Contests on the weekends on CW. I have held contest records myself and participated in DX contests from both sides of the pile up (on CW of course). Once in awhile I ask one of the contestants a question at the same speed they are using. They struggle or ignore the question. Using a computer to send CQ and a call on CW and to log the station is not CW activity in my opinion. That type of operating is the usual manner in CW contests these days. My comment referred to carrying on a conversation (having a QSO not a contest contact). CW contests on weekends really are no substitute for a CW QSO. Garie, I am currently a member of a CW group ( for 38 years) . I have been a member of other CW groups too. I stand by my statement that there is little interest in CW on HF. Years ago when I reached 50 (I am now 70) I started to record the age of the guy on the other end of the QSO in my log. I usually give my age and there is a response in kind. I have continued that habit of recording the age in my paper log (now kept in thick binders). Most of the time (even now) the other person's age is usually more than mine and I am 70. That is some hard evidence in the apathy towards CW.The FCC further maligned the art of CW when they dispensed with even a paucity of CW skill for obtaining a license. The ARRL in their annual Field Day activity ( the most popular operating event by their own claim ) had to go to the position of giving twice the amount of points for a CW contact during Field Day. My experience has been the increased absence of CW QSOs; the inability of those that do operate to use a paddle and converse rather than relying upon a computer ; the FCC's dumbing down of the standards for obtaining a license and finally the ARRL's catalyst of doubling the points for a CW contact during Field Day. In the aggregate, in my opinion, that is pretty good evidence of the lack of interest in the art of CW. Just my two cents. Some may disagree. Jim W9VNE

DX on satellites

Congratulations to Jay AA4FL on his DX accomplishment. I am a relative newcomer to the satellite game. I have been lucky to have worked just about every DX entity that has come along for the last 50 years. I find that there is little interest in CW on the satellites. That is not surprising since there is little interest in CW in the HF spectrum. I enjoy both DXing and ragchewing. I have watched many FO 29 passes over Europe where my signal is good copy but no activity. Not surprising since it is 3 AM in Europe. If anyone in Europe would like to try a schedule with me on FO 29 I would be interested. I am primarily a CW operator too (my preference). Every year I see many DXpeditions to various spots in the Caribbean for contest activity. It would be great if these groups would get on the satellites and spice up the birds. I have thought about going to OX (Greenland) next Summer where I could access both Europe and a lot of North America on both the FM satellites as well as those with SSB/CW. Is there any real interest in working DX (rhetorical question) ? I have heard a couple of Central American stations get ignored on the FM satellites while stations swap reports for the umpteenth time between themselves. FO 29 gives plenty of DX capability but rarely have I heard it utilized. I work Europe on AO 7 but FO 29 appears to be better in my opinion. Anyone interested in a sked from NA to EU ? CW on the satellites

Hello Jim and other CW addicts, I too, have been a CW junkie all of my ham radio years. I was first licensed in June of 1960. I can't claim being a total CW operator but that is certainly my operating mode of choice. I did a quick scan of my last five log pages. (I keep a hard copy but I also enter my QSOs into log-EQF so I have a double logging system.) I found only 10 fone contacts out of about 125 total Qs. When we had AO-40 up and running quite well I gave up on HF and devoted all my efforts to chasing DX on that bird. I did actually make nearly 1000 Qs but I will sadly admit that about 90% of them were on fone. It's not that I wanted to work fone but there was very, very little everyday CW operation on the bird. Several expeditions made good use of their time by operating both CW and SSB. Since I was chasing hard for satellite DXCC I worked whatever DX I could hear on whatever mode they were using. My first satellite QSOs were via RS-12 and they were on CW! My first QSOs on AO-10 and AO-13 were also on CW. (Wish I could have been interested in the birds when 13 was in it's prime.) I too, operate , just for the fun of it, in some DX contests but generally have much more fun doing the CW versions. I often wonder if those high speed contesters I work can really copy as fast as they send. I can because I still log on paper first and then e-log later. I too, work Field Day whenever possible but make the stipulation that I get to do the CW operating. No one has ever challenged me for that. Jim, I too am 70 years old and I'm seriously wondering if I'll live long enough to see another HEO bird in orbit. At the current rate of putting such birds into orbit the chances of my living long enough to chase DX on a satellite again seem, as the saying goes, slim and none!! I love chasing DX but the challenge of doing it via ordinary HF is certainly less satisfying than working Cocos Keeling Island with less than five degrees of elevation at both ends and doing so through a hole in an Elm tree across the street from my satellite antennas. BTW, I need only North Korea to have them all on HF but I have only about 120 worked via satellite so the challenge remains for me via satellite but without an HEO bird it's only a vague dream. I favor, at the moment, 30 meters only because there is no fone allowed on this band. I hear quite a few 'struggling" CW operators there but I have to give them due credit for trying. I don't currently operate 40 meters but I too have often called CQ on 30 without any answer whatsoever. Interest in CW is waning and doing so at a fast pace. Jim, let me know if you'd like a sked for a CW QSO. Seems we have much in common. Please promise not to send faster than 25/30 WPM. That's OK in a contest or for a DXpedition but 20 WPM makes for a much more enjoyable rag chew!! Long live CW both on HF and satellite but us old "die hards" can't continue for much longer. After hearing "RS0ISS" in CW, I received the images! The strength of the signals reminded me of what U5MIR sounded like in the 90's. 432 MHz linear amplifier

At the suggestion of the AMSAT Treasurer I am posting this request to the bulletin board: What I am looking for is a solid-state 70 cm linear amplifier that has an input of no more than 250 mW and an output of at least 10 watts and 25 or more would be even better. The frequency range needs to be from 432 MHz to 435 MHz or wider. I am familar with a couple of kits including the one from Australia that definitely has the best price. However, I am also looking at building my own but have not found a suitable construction article here on the Internet using both "google" and "yahoo" as search engines. Nor have I found a suitable amplifier in the issues of Ham Radio Magazine and 73 Magazine that I have. What I am looking for is something that has a board "layout" (I am definitely able to reproduce a board). I do have a "fair" number of suitable transistors and other parts available that can be used. Also, if someone has a suitable linear amplifier (this is for both CW and SSB) at a reasonable price or else for trade I would definitely be interested. I have all sorts of things to trade including tubes (receiver, transmit, higher power), components, and a few "boat anchor" items. Since I am on a "fixed income" (Social Security disability) I definitely do have to be careful as to how much I spend on such things (my wife would definitely take severe action against my bodily health if I spend too much). What I need the linear amplifier for is a Microwave Modules 432 MHz transverter. The 10 watt linear amplifier board is missing and the basic exciter only puts out 250 mW. Now I did know the amplifier was missing before I traded for the unit so that was not a surprise. The transverter works very well but the output power is not sufficient to really do anything with and is way too little to drive my 4CX250B amplifier. Congratulations to the sstver's on ISS. Ron Parise, WA4SIR and I EXCHANGED SSTV pics between 2 and 10 Dec 1990...on a COLUMBIA SAREX. QSL's to prove it.. Present users may be interested in my claim that I delivered the first NEWSPAPER in space! Dick Richard, KB5SIW and Ellen Baker, KA5SIX set a record in space on Columbia 25 June to 9 July 1990, and the SAN DIEGO UNION NEWS recorded the event on 2 July 1990....I got up at 0500 on 3 July, took a picture of the paper article, and SSTV'ed it to COLUMBIA. And of course have that QSL.. I don't know if NASA archived any of those transactions... I have just uploaded my QRN-full image onto the ARISS gallery. Note that it will not accept a high resolution jpeg so I set my jpeg to medium and it uploaded ok. MMSSTV reported reception at 1656z. Cor PD0RKC reported 1656z too but his image said 1652z; my image too obscure due to QRN. andy G0SFJ

Hello Andy,I had a good signal from ISS in the last low el. pass inrange of Holland.Also the signal sounded very clear but for somereason my image is a bit distorted.I used a FT897 (9 el tonna X yagi H/V lin.) Diplexer question

I'm installing a diplexer on my downlink side. Since I'm running two antennas, do I just leave the 145 MHz alone or is it more better to terminate it with a 50 ohm load I suspect the load is a better answer. Does the preamp go prior to the diplexer? Or after? Thanks and 73 de Tim, K4SHF FM04

AO7 DX - best possible?

I have worked and confirmed by QSL what appears to be an AO7 DX record, LU2DPW (GF05gi) to W4DFU at the University of Florida Club Station (EL89tp), 7537 KM according to TinyLocator software. See www.gatorradio.org <http://www.gatorradio.org/> for the card and info. It took CW to do so with not much more time other than to exchange calls, grids and reports. I have heard OH8MBN in CW once from the home QTH (EL89wo). That calculates at 7813KM and is probably not enough time to exchange all info. Perhaps with a perfect pass and schedule.just to wet everyone's appetite as to what is possible on AO7.so get on and work some DX! 73, Jay AA4FL

Hello All, Current Exp.17 crew will trie to send SSTV test images at 12 Oct. 2008 between 18:00 - 21:00UTC (on 145.800Mhz FM). This images do not come from Richard Garriott because he is now in the SoyuzTMA13 on the way to ISS. Richard Garriott first SSTV images will be expected at 14Oct. 2008. More information (from ARISS) is to see below. 73's Cor PD0RKC http://iss.ontwikkel.nl October 12, 2008 RICHARD GARRIOTT LAUNCHES TO SPACE On Sunday, October 12, Richard Garriott, W5KWQ, is scheduled to begin his journey to the International Space Station (ISS) as he blasts off into space via a Russian Soyuz and docks with the ISS two days later; he is due to return to Earth on Thursday, October 23. Richard, the sixth private citizen to be accepted by the Russian Federal Space Agency (RKA) for a short-term mission on the ISS, is the son of Owen Garriott, W5LFL. In 1983, Owen was the first ham to make QSOs from space. Richard said he plans to build on his father's legacy by also making QSOs from the ISS: He plans to perform several school contacts and downlink slow scan television images during his flight, as well as contact the general ham community in his free time and perform random scout contacts during Jamboree on the Air (JOTA). Richard and Owen have been working as a team to plan how to cram in all of the objectives Richard hopes to achieve in space, including scientific experiments. Richard and Owen sent this message to all hams: "We are both very pleased and appreciative of the ARISS and ARRL support in making the voice and SSTV ham operations more fun, interesting to the public, and valuable for research on Richard's flight this October. One of the most exciting aspects of living and working in space is the chance to look back at the Earth. Owen had one of the first opportunities to do this 35 years ago on Skylab. He also had the first opportunity to talk with the ham community from space 25 years ago aboard [NASA shuttle mission] STS-9. Richard now has the opportunity to connect with the ham community almost exactly 25 years after his father's shuttle flight and 35 years after Skylab. One of Richard's primary objectives with his flight is to photograph the Earth 35 years after the first orbital laboratory and look for changes on the Earth in the intervening time." "While Richard is at the ISS window, he will be operating the amateur SSTV equipment and sending its images down to hams around the world. These downlinks can then be sent to an ARISS central repository for delayed and wider use. That was it. Because it was missing those two files, it just couldn't do anything which caused the closers and crashes. I can't explain it WHY those two files would not be included but it seems to the way things are done when setting up for the repositories. I can't get PREDICT to run on my linux systems for some reason and would like to access a online PREDICT server for my PREDICT-GSAT program until I can fiqure out why PREDICT won't run on any of my systems. FYI, I have PREDICT loaded but it keeps going to the edit location screen each time I start. I enter my information each time and it shuts down each time. James W8ISS

To Greg KO6TH, I don't think we are talking about the same software as the software I am trying to run is entitled VC-H1 Commander and is specifically for the VC-H1. The options you were mentioning were related to the D7. Al W8KHP

I made recordings of the entire pass, and could hear inbetween that QRM still quite a bit of SSTV signals. Unfortunately to much noise most of the time to decode. .. I did see partially someone's shack I believe. Thanks for transmitting the SSTV signals ! Henk, PA3GUO

AO-51 SSTV test

Heard N5UXT send 5-6 frames on the 1310Z pass. Using HRD, I decoded one fairly clear picture of a cubical satellite, but never got a good enough lock on the others. RX signal was excellent, but the audio level was a bit low, and had enough noise that the uplink did not seem to be achieving full quieting to AO-51.
