Bird Admirers, I've been reading the bb and feel like I'm emerging from a torture chamber. (That can't really be the case because torture is illegal here--or is it?) We have serious problems as an organization, though it's tough to be specific because the info we're given on the subjects closest to our hearts has been so woefully inadequate. From the viewpoint of a long time AMSAT member (LM183) that seems indisputable. It's possible that a great deal of this unpleasantness could have been avoided if the folks who are aware of the facts would have made them widely available. The membership is entitled to know quickly when important things change, whether that's a change in approach to getting a new bird up, a fundamental change in design philosophy for a new bird, financial difficulties, or a significant personnel change. We've been given next to nothing, and naturally that breeds discomfort, to say the least. NO MORE PABLUM, PLEASE. Unless our leaders have given up completely on HEOs, and I don't think they have, a development schedule is a must. No serious project, whether built by paid pros, volunteers, or elves, can be pursued without one. (Schedules for project components change, it's true, and when that happens, the master schedule is usually adjusted, and a new one is promulgated.) In our case, because the launch is so uncertain, perhaps the final milestone on our project schedule should be "Ready for Spaceship Integration" or some such. There is widely used computer based project management software available. Without a well-known and well-disseminated development schedule, there is no project, and our leadership should understand that. What about financial, management, and technical resources? We know that there are serious--possibly fatal--financial obstacles to launch. But what about other constraints? Is there enough money to develop and build the bird or not? I have never heard a statement on the matter. What are the specific areas in which technical and managerial volunteers are needed? My sense is that if the outlook for resources is that we'll have enough for everything except the launch, then we should get Eagle and/or the Intelsat thing ready as fast as prudently possible. Everyone--designers, builders, Board, membership at large-- will have a great sense of achievement. Then, if it comes to naught, we'll all know that we did what we could. As it stands, it seems it would take a great deal of time--years-- to be ready even if a launch opportunity appeared. But then again, I'm not at all sure of that, because for information we have available is, well, woefully inadequate. One final thought: I'm just as tired of reading posts that come down hard on "complainers and whiners" as I am of the rest of it. We do have very serious unresolved issues that threaten the future of our piece of this great hobby. Why shouldn't people complain about that and urge resolution? Calls to "stop complaining and volunteer" strike me as rather hollow. What is it that we're volunteering for, envelope stuffing (everyone can do it), building something (very few can do it), strategic thinking (many think they can do it)? Again, give us the facts and, with the impressive talent we can draw from, we'll come up with some answers. Without the facts, we won't. 73, Tony, N2UN

Software and hardware design skills are not at all the same as people and management skills. I can tell you from years of experience that the best designers are often not the best managers (to say the least). But for many years, management positions have been the only way up and that has not always had the best results. Hence there has evolved in the software business (at least) the senior position of chief architect. Thus someone will exemplary technical skills is recognized (and paid) accordingly, and expected to manage the design, not the people. This gives a project the guidance it really needs without putting such a technically valuable person into a management position that (s)he may not be well suited for. AMSAT-NA, our future

My mission has been successful. The recent diatribes (mine) brought a lot of the people out of the woodwork. And if the shoe fits, wear it...I am just looking for information... Now some facts: Project Oscar launched AO7 (ssb,cw) 34 years ago, a LEO. India launched VO52 (ssg. cw) 3 years ago, a LEO. Both very successful for many qso's, simultaneously, and miraculously AO7 came back to life. I can certainly understand that AMSAT-NA cannot afford a HEO...Hopefully, AMSAT-DL can. Now the questions (for the Board of Directors, or anyone that has the answers). What are our future plans for launching another hamsat? And when? If no launch plans are in the mill, what will be done with the funds we presently have? For what is the money now being spent?? vanishing hams etc

hi folks, fig i would get in on this one, at least say what feel and think about it, Im waiting with that one fellow till they die off, hi old fuds that is, some of them anyway,none of them like the shuttle! Won't even move up to the real world and have a shuttle launch net here. ( I tryed that once and they tryed to ban me from the local repeater) Just one or two fellows is all it takes to take the fun out of this hobbie. When I first went to get my license, the old fart said to me, What do you want? it was just the way he said it, mean. Ever since I had this feeling about some of the fellows there that I really don't want to know. I call them grumpy old men. Sure we need some young blood in our hobbie, and its going to take another way of gettting them there/here.. Tryed giving my station/time for the ares/races group, that did not turn out, to many Indian Chiefs and no one knows who is in charge. (station manager) And the people that are there have been the head honchos for twenty five years and things won't change. Or the new people that come are now placed in charge and they know less, let alone how it makes you feel, being there for years and someone new comes in and takes charge of you. We had field day and no one came to our booth. I wonder why. by the way not many for field day also, Listened to the skywarn net tonight, not many there no more also. I wonder why. I know why, Its the way people are acting/treating each other. So everyone needs to think about it, be nice and pay attention to that amateur code, make sure (others) have fun. And be nice. :) And I won't even mention the descrimination that I seen. Vanishing Hams, probley, maybe. but maybe not, if we see our mistakes and take heed. and tell others about them like i am here. kc8gkf just another middle age ham. looking here for another topic

Amsat is not a for-profit corporation with employees who take orders and follow directions from management. Amsat's management cannot order anyone to do anything. It is an all volunteer organization and an ego stroke is the only reward that people get for their hard work. It has always been well known that this sort of environment attracts the Type-A prima donnas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prima_donna ->"the term often signifies a vain, obnoxious and temperamental person who, although irritating, cannot be done without.") In a room full of such people, arguments and fights are not uncommon. It has always been this way in Amsat, but perhaps the rapid communications of the internet makes it more apparent now than it was in the past. This too will pass. As a volunteer organization, Amsat depends on people like you to step forward and do what needs to be done. If you think you can do a better job, then step up to the plate and do it. If you don't like the web site or the online store then come forward and build a better one. If you think you can run the organization better than the current management then run for elected office. If you do none of these things, at least stop complaining about the people who do. If you think P3E is the way to go, you are free to send your money to Amsat DL to fund P3E. Rick - I think you're being very gracious. At the risk of being acccused of making personal attacks, I will say that my personal opinion/perception is that there are certain individuals who are chronic complainers. I would be curious as to how many of those make half as much effort toward being part of a solution as they spend with unproductive complaining. I have a personal list of those I believe have nothing better to do than complain and are rarely if ever part of a constructive solution. I would go so far as to suspect some of these individulas do not even wish AMSAT-NA to succeed. I delete BB-directed messages from such individuals without ever reading them. Doppler Frequency Device Control

Hi guys, If I'm not mistaken, several years ago, I read an article which shows how to build an electronic device to run a pair of Yaesu, Kenwood or Icom VHF/UHF rigs to compensate for doppler effect on inverting or non inverting transponders. I'm not exactly young. Amateur radio has a few things going against it as far as "young" people are concerned, and some of these things cannot be easily solved by regulation changes, mentoring, etc. First and foremost is that amateur radio is a technical hobby and is consequently viewed by young people (hereafter taken to mean "people under 25") as nerdy, uncool, etc. I say with some confidence that very few people who currently hold amateur radio licences were members of the popular crowd in high school or university. Is that silly? Perhaps... but it's also true. Young people have a lot of demands on their time, and being "cool" is as important now as it ever was, maybe more so. The result is that amateur radio is going to appeal to a comparatively small number of young people from the get-go. I am not sure how or if this perception can be overcome. Second, advancing technology makes the hobby less useful than it once was. If you wanted to chat with people in far away lands back in 1979 (when I first started SWL), then amateur radio was probably just about the only way to do it. If you want to do that today, you need only download any of a multitude of simple computer programs and have at it, with no technical skill, no licence and little or no cost. People getting into amateur radio now will be doing it, in my opinion, purely for a love of radio or tinkering rather than what I perceive to have been a large palette of reasons in decades gone by. This issue can probably be overcome by raising the profile of amateur radio as a hobby with a modern flavour. Certainly amateur radio satellite and keyboarding modes for amateur radio help out a lot. No offence to morse code afficiondos, but the vast majority of the kids I see (I volunteer at the Canada Science and Tech museum) think of morse code as a quaint reminder of days past... interesting only as far as "yeah, my grampa used to do that, neat" but not interesting enough to be something they'd want to do. Every time someone tries to raise the importance of morse code in amateur radio, I guarantee it scares away another potential young licencee who sees amateur radio as old-fashioned and backward. On the other hand, get a kid talking on a satellite to someone across the continent (or ocean, from here) and they'll remember that for a LONG time. Get a kid chatting with someone around the world by keyboard using Olivia or PSK31 and they can relate instantly because they're used to instant messaging. Seriously, as radio amateurs we should really downplay morse code outside our licenced ranks. People who want to keep code alive will do so, but very few people are attracted to this hobby by morse code and I believe a great many people are repelled by a perception that if you can't do code, you're not a "real" radio amateur. Third, and this also can't be overcome by mentoring etc., is that amateur radio has space and financial requirements that are beyond most young people. Everyone on this list go look at your stuff right now and add up what it cost in terms of currency as well as indoor and outdoor space. Sure, you *CAN* get into amateur radio with a used 2m HT picked up in Dayton for $100. But let's face it the really cool stuff requires more sophisticated (read: expensive) equipment, usually with antenna systems that require space and more money. When you're a teen or a young person just starting a family, it's a discretionary expense that is probably just not high on your list. Only when you've started to get a few grey hairs (if you have any hairs left) is it likely you'll be in a comfortable position to invest in the "good" stuff. This is the reason, in my opinion, that radio amateurs largely seem to be no younger than about 35 or so. It simply takes that long to get in a position to really pursue parts of this hobby. All, I have and continue to be proud of this organization. We are not a perfect organization. Just a few volunteer. And they do the best job that they can. I know that I personally can only do so much. I do have a very demanding job and a family that needs my attention. But I think that I and the many volunteers that support the ARISS activity have done a fantsatic job in supporting AMSAT. And amateur radio in general. We are doing good work and share a positive attitude as we know we are making a difference. I KNOW that there is an active effort within AMSAT-NA to bring HEO and LEO amateur radio satellites to fruitition. I can see it happening, despite the negative rhetoric and severe comments that exist on this BB. For those that are continuing to support the AMSAT mission...I tip my hat. I have been in the space business for 33 years. At one point in my career I went a LONG time without launching a specific satellite. (7 years!) This happens to NASA. This happens to ESA and the other space agencies. And this is currently happening to AMSAT. So....keep the faith and VOLUNTEER. For those naysayers out there....those that like to NOT volunteer and/or enjoy throwing stones...I wish you would change your attitude. Or move to another BB. Help, not hurt. As all I see you want to do is tear down this organization. And I must say that it is easy to tear down an organization. And it is very hard to build one up....to volunteer...to make GOOD THINGS happen. I received this URL today. Is amsat-bb fun for anyone?

Honestly, I'm completely disgusted with amsat-bb. Is anyone having any fun at all out there? You people seem resolutely determined to complain about the current state of amateur satellites, without provocation, and with no idea of how fix anything. Or even any idea how to have fun using what few satellites we do have. If someone were interested in getting into satellite operation on VO-52 or even AO-51, I'd actively _discourage_ them from joining this cesspool of negativity. And less the AMSAT-NA think I'm giving them a pass, what the hell is up with you people? The store, down for months. Consistently out of date info on the website. Promises that updates will be made via the Amsat Journal or at conferences. EARTH TO AMSAT BOARD: THIS IS THE AGE OF THE INTERNET. It isn't good enough to publish summary information on paper a couple of times a year. People are frustrated because to all appearances, you aren't being honest with them, and you certainly aren't being timely. I even tried joining the namaste-dev list to combat the lack of any serious, technically relevant development going on, to see if a skilled programmer like myself could reasonably contribute anything to the ongoing efforts. I lurked for a month or two, and what I observed did not thrill me with confidence. I see a group mired in requirements negotiation, bickering, and in the last few weeks, completely imploding. Bleh. Okay, that's enough complaining. Here is some food for thought: 1. It seems to me that the groundstation development is completely turned on its head. The goal is to create a ground station design which is both a) reasonably inexpensive and b) reproducible enough to be constructed by large numbers of hams. So, begin there by actually (and this will seem really radical) DESIGNING AND BUILDING SOME HARDWARE. It seems to me that the majority of the design is actually software. Software is difficult to design, but has a number of other offsetting qualities. It's easy to modify and cheap to redistribute, so it makes some sense to pursue it later. Additionally, it allows the hardware design to be picked up and extended by others with parallel interest, gaining momentum from them. Perhaps the TAPR software defined radio platform with suitable up/down converters is a good place to start. Or GNU radio. So, let's get those into the hands of several hundred hams, and start working. Volunteers don't work well in the abstract in my experience, so let's make the development process as concrete as possible to get them involved. Let's work to get costs down. Let's get basic software freely available under open source. Leverage work from VHF, microwave and packet groups. If we can't do everything, then let's at least do something. 2. Milestones. We need tangible milestones. It's far easier to find the status of Kiwisat (very cool, incidently) than it is for Eagle. In part this is because the kiwisat team seems to take their contributors seriously, and likes to keep them informed to keep morale high and to show progress. What milestones have been passed in the Eagle design and construction? Can anyone find that out without knowing somebody personally? 3. We've received notice from AMSAT-DL that they don't have enough money to launch P3E. Well, how much do they need? How much are they short? If they are off by 20%, or even 50%, then I suspect fundraising could conceivably close that gap. If they are off by 80%, then I think we have to honestly admit that until competition makes boosts to HEO more economical, we've been priced out of the game for now. That'd be a tough thing to swallow, but pretending that we are going to have launch opportunities which do not exist isn't improving anyone's morale, especially as years go by and nothing gets done. 4. AMSAT needs to find some good volunteers, and importantly, it needs to reject some bad volunteers. Not everyone who offers to help is helping. On the other hand, not all criticism is complaining. FS: Icom W32A dualband HT (great for sat ops)

I have for sale an Icom W32A dualband (2m/70cm) HT with the BP173 and BP180 battery packs, and the BC-110 wall charger. This is the dualband model that also does dual receive, so it is great for satellite operations because you can hear yourself on the downlink. The W32A has long been a favorite HT of satellite operators. It will also do dual in-band receive, will do wide receive up into 800mhz. A couple of the keys have the lettering on them a little worn off, but they are still readable. The rest of the HT looks good. It also has an aftermarket 17 inch long high gain dualband antenna instead of the stock antenna. This is also great for giving you the extra gain you need to hear and get into the satellites. AMSAT-DL wouldn't be as far as they are on P3E without that input, and of course THEIR input has been outstanding also ... 9600 bp AX.25 soundcard decoder

Greetings, I am wondering if anyone on the BB knows if there are any 9600-bps soundcard-based AX.25 ASCII decoding programs out in the www? If so what is the web address for it? I know 9600-bps is possible with modern soundcards as I have a program from COAA that decodes it for non-HAM related data. I am using my IC-910H data socket port output with it set to 9600 in the settings. I am interested in using the 9600-bps program for capturing the 9600-bps telemetry of AO-51, for example. I would then parse the text externally and and combine with the engineering equations to get to the calibrated data. Thank you very much. KG4QWC, Jim.

Field Day suggestion

I was thinking of providing a PDF for field day submissions next year that will have fill-in fields for scoring. Would there be any reason someone would not use this or is there a better way? I have always provided a flat text file you could fill in as well as a word doc. Of the submissions I have received, they are split almost 50/50 for PDF and text. Maybe with radio buttons for the FM birds that you can click if you made your one contact? Any suggestions. Trying to streamline and improve things. I know sometimes things are better left alone, that's why the request for any suggestions. All of the submissions are coming via email now, none by paper in the mail. Hi! On Thursday (17 July), I begin a week-long road trip that includes a hamfest and visits to several unusual grids in and around Arizona. These plans, other than the hamfest, are tentative and subject to change without warning. On the 17th, I leave Phoenix for northern Arizona. I will try to be on the afternoon AO-27 and possibly the evening AO-51 passes from somewhere up there. I don't know which grids I will get to for those passes, but I will be on from wherever I happen to be at those times. The ARRL Arizona State Convention and Hamfest is a two-day event, on Friday (18th) and Saturday (19th) in Williams. Williams is a small city on Interstate 40 and the old US route 66, west of Flagstaff and south of the Grand Canyon, in grid DM35. At the hamfest, I will be part of the AMSAT table and will give presentations and do some demonstrations on the FM satellites and *possibly* VO-52 during those two days. After the hamfest, I plan on taking the next 3 or 4 days traveling around northern and western Arizona and neighboring states. As of now, I am planning to initially head northeast from Williams toward the Arizona/Utah border, and then work my way west toward Las Vegas before returning home. WOW! Nice to have such a knowledge base to work with! I want to thank all of you who responded and gave me info and links to some inexpensive goodies to get the rotors under computer control. For anyone else who is lurking in the wings and reading the mail, here is what I got for a short list and links where applicable. FOD track boards. Boards available from Far Circuits, http://www.farcircuits.net AMSAT tracker. AMSAT carries the LVB tracker: http://wa4sxm.googlepages.com/home It uses the same protocol, can be configured for either USB or serial port, and goes assembled for around $200, and can be had in various versions of completion for less. ARRL Sat Tracker 688 boards. http://www.arrl.org/FandES/tbp/ariss-kits/ This is probable for the price it is looking like about the most inexpensive solution. Uni_Trac. http://www.etelectronics.com/html/uni_trac.html Nice but NOT inexpensive. Primetec Primesat Controler. http://www.primetec.pt/products.php?sec=2&cat=3&prod=12&lang=en Very nice but break out the bucks cause it ain't cheep! So, there you have it. Special event 12-13/7 Fryktories

A Greek ancient system of communication with fire from torches above mountaintops is called fryktories from fryktos that means "the torch" in Greek . On 13 of July 2008 and after 3200 years we will be climbing up the same mountaintops with Turkish Hams and will transmit through the hamradio frequencies a message from Troy – located in N.W Turkey up to Mykines that is in Southern Greece using a special call on every mountaintop that the original message passed through. The same mountaintops are mentioned from Aeshylus in his drama "Agamemnon" and they are the ones that brought back to the Mikines city the message that Troy has fallen into the hands of the ancient siege army. The transmitted message will be passing along the nodes on the 2m band from one station to another. The special calls that will be used through this campaign will be: Turkey Mountain Ida(Troy): to be announced. Greece Station 1 (Lemnos Isl): SX8FRA Station 2 (Athonas mnt) : SX2FRB/A Station 3 (Kandili Evia): SX8FRC Station 4 (Mesapio, Biotia): SX1FRD Station 5 (Kitheronas): SX1FRE Station 6 (Gerania): SX1FRF Station 7 (Arachneon, Peloponisos): SX3FRG Station 8 (Mikines): SX3FRH Every Station will have at least 2m SSB/FM capability with yagi antennas. Before and after the event every station will be trying to make as many QSO's as possible with the special calls. Also that day we expect that many other hilltops will be activated in 2m band from other Greek and Foreign hams that will be joining this event. Hello gang, I am in process of putting together a ground station for AMSAT use and I have acquired a Yaesu 5400 rotor system with a pair of older Cushcraft antennas. I now need a controller box to go between the PC and the rotors. I checked the price of the GS-232B by Yaesu and nearly had heart failure! Then I looked at the schematic and was appalled! Surely someone has come up with a better/cheaper solution. Searching the web only produced a few build from scratch articles and a fellow from Europe selling a board. SatPc32 question on W0LMD server rotor control setup

In the setup box for the "Server W0LMD" can someone tell me what should be checked in the "Azimuth rotor turns in" box?? The two choices are South and North. I am using the Yaesu G-5400 with a north center. I can't find anything about the setting in the SatPC32 manual nor the setup section for the W0LMD control box. Thanks Dick K8ZTT

I've Created a Monster...

This gentleman wrote me a couple weeks ago, thanking me for my meager "How to Work Sats..." tutorial he found on the 'Net. Fellow AMSATers, I have created a monster. Here's his latest email message... ================================================ Hey Clint, I crunched some numbers here just now based on the seven contacts I made yesterday running 50 milliwatts out (!) : I worked all three birds with crossband FM mode (AO-27, AO-51 and SO-50) During those seven contacts, my signal travelled an average of 620.7 miles to get to the satellites. My longest trip was to SO-50 in a contact with KD8ILL - my .05-watt signal travelled 830.5 miles to the bird. Finally ... on a 25-degree-angle pass of AO-51 an hour ago as I type this, N7JK in Phoenix became my 100th contact on the birds - in less than 13 full days. Yeah ... I'm soooo hooked! 73, [Name deleted to protect the innocent] ================================================ YES - I got him to join AMSAT-NA. And he is anxiously awaiting Martha's initial mailing. It is my understanding that the prohibition against amateur radio equipment on Royal Caribbean ships does not apply to HTs. Guests are also allowed to have two-way radios, more commonly know as walkie-talkies, for onboard personal communications. Basic specifications are as follows: Up to 10-mile coverage range, Up to 5 watts power, Internal Voice, Operated Transmission, No external mounting antenna. I have not had any problem operating satellites of Royal Caribbean ship using my Icom W32A and an AL800 telescoping antenna. I would guess that the prohibition is in place to prevent amateur radio operating on HF where you have a run of coax and an external antenna. This type of equipment raises safety issues with the cruise line. G500 / KR500 parts needed

Hello group, I've just rebuilt my 'spare' elevation rotator, a Kenpro KR-500. Thanks to all of those that have contributed to the knowledge base on these rotators. I found several articles, including one with very detailed pictures. I'm planning to swap this one for the Yaesu G500a currently atop the tower. As you know, these units are identical, and I was hoping someone on the list had an extra terminal cover (Yaesu p/n s8000279). This is the plastic cover that protects the terminal strip and wiring from the weather. Yaesu has discontinued the part, so I was hoping that someone had an extra or knew of a source for this part? I'm also in the market for a set of U-bolts and clamps for the crossboom. blown preamplifier

Hi, wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this and what may have happened. My friend runs a very modest station a 3 element yagi on 2mtrs and 7 ele on 70cms, I think he uses ecoflex 10 coax etc. He installed a 2mtr preamp which had RF sensing and a BF964 as the active device inside the preamplifier. He just this afternoon joined his outers of the coaxes together to form a common bond, and help reduce his noise figure (which did I think work). However he has found that the preamplifier has now failed and needs a new BF964 device fitting. Anyone know what might have happened? He was TXing on 2mtrs when the unit failed, what went wrong? He bonded the outers together at the shack end and the antenna end, and all seemed fine but obviously something went wrong. Any thoughts or ideas please let me know and I will try and find him a BF964 and replace it in his preamplifier. many thanks regards Gus M0IKB -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. SSB LNA435 preamp and Arrow Satellite Antenna

If I insert an SSB LNA435 preamp between the 70cm antenna and the diplexer will the suppression of the 2 meter signal from a 5 watt HT be adequate so that the preamp will not be fried? Or, should I add something like the Ramsey RF sensing T/R relay to protect the preamp? Thank you! 73, Al, W8KHP

Thanks David Hi David, G0MRF Looking at the specifications of AO40 I found that at 435 MHz the equivalent noise temperature of the RX is TN (k) = 500 kelvin The Prx (23) i.e. the power needed by the receiver to develope a signal of 23 dB over the noise is -145 dBW The 435 MHz satellite antenna gain is 14 dBi It is not specified the transponder output power with a S/N=23 dB because it depends on what transponder is intended to be used for the downlink. Probably -145 dBW at the RX input is the power needed to get a S/N = 23 dB at the IF input before to be switched by the matrix to different transponders. By the way the attenuation earth to moon at 435 MHz for 400.000 km is 197 dB and going back to calculations we get : TX power at 435 MHz on earth........................ + 20 dBW (100 W) 435 MHz antenna gain on earth ....................... + 18 dB ----------------- EIRP of the ground station................................ + 38 dBW ( 6.3 kW) Attenuation 435 MHz for 400.000 km .............. -197 dB ------------------ Power received on a 435 MHz isotropic........... - 159 dBW antenna at a distance of 400.000 km Satellite antenna gain ......................................... + 14 dBi ------------------ Received power at RX input for S/N=23 dB.... - 145 dBW It seems that both calculations match and 5 kW to 6 kW EIRP up on 70 cm and 13 dBi antenna gain on the 2 meters downlink are a minimum necessary provided that the satellite antennas orbiting around the moon are constantly directed toward the earth but this is a very difficult task. 73" de i8CVS Domenico

Review of FD ST1 computer interface to Yaesu 5400/5500 rotators

I just completed testing of a Fox Delta ST1 computer interface for Yaesu G5400 and G5500 antenna rotators. I purchased this kit as a backup to our GS-232 interface for our ARISS school contact on July 4. http://www.foxdelta.com/products/st1.htm The kit was delivered quickly and kit completion took only a couple hours. It is available with either an RS-232 interface (which I purchased) or a USB interface (not tested). The only connections required are a serial port on the computer and a DIN-8 cable to the Yaesu controller. I used SatPC32 software but it is said to work also with Nova for Windows. The only calibration required is setting the "OUTPUT VOLTAGE ADJ." for both Az and El on the Yaesu controller. The instructions say to set this voltage to 4.5V, but with this setting, the controller tried to rotate the antenna beyond its limit. I got a hint from WA8SME who programmed the PIC firmware to try increasing the calibration voltage slightly. I found a value of 4.7V worked properly. The Az and El rotators are moved sequentially rather that simultaneously as does the Yaesu GS-232 controller. This slows down large movements in both Az and El, but since incremental movements are usually small, this should not matter much. The unit performed as specified. The price sure beats the Yaesu GS-232 price. Ron Parsons W5RKN

Best type of coax to use between preamps and antennas

After problems I had on Field Day in trying to operate the satellites, I am looking to upgrade the coax I use between the preamps and the antennas. I am using 9913FX from the IC-910H and the preamps. I had been using RG Mini 8/U for the connection between the preamps and antennas. Should I also use 9913FX between the preamps and the antennas? The run between the radio and the preamp is 50 ft. The run from the preamp to the antennas is about 10 - 15 ft depending on where I set the antennas up. I am concerned about how flexible the 9913FX would be in terms of the antennas rotating back and forth. I was planning on ordering the cables pre-made from CableXperts since working with N connectors isnt my strong point and dont want to worry about my soldering and having a good connection on both ends of the cable. SEEDS-II at 1 degree elevation

Keeps impressing me somehow ... Yesterday I monitored a pass of SEEDS-II (max 89 degree elevation) Most remarkable to me is that these little satellites can be heared at very low elevation with very good S/N figures. Receiving their CW telemetry can be done down to 0.5 degree elevation. Just using an old 2x8 elements antenna without pre-amp. To commemorate the 400th anniversary of Quebec city foundation by Samuel de Champlain on the third of July 1608 marking the continuous french presence in North America a special call sign has been issued "VC3C" I will activate this very special call sign on all available amateur satellite from July 7 to July 13. On July 13 the mobile communication unit "On the Champlain Road" who travel the same route along the St-Lawrence as Champlain does in 1608 400 years ago will be in Sorel-Tracy where Champlain enters in the Richelieu river (see below the ****) and was the first to european to discover the Lake Champlain. The station will be located at the Governors House in Sorel http://grandquebec.com/monteregie/maison-des-gouverneurs/ (The tower in the back ground is located on the roof of the Sorel-Tracy ARC HQ.) People of French descent across North America can trace their history back to Québec City, recognized today as the cradle of French civilization in the New World. French North America extended from the Gulf of St Lawrence to the Great Lakes and from Hudson Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. re best antenna array?

Thanks for info on your thoughts on the best transceiver for the satellites, what about the best array? Here is my example: 2 mtrs 7 ele (3.5mtr boom) X yagi with switchable H, V, RHCP and LHCP and homebrew preamp. 70cms x 12 (3.0mtr boom) X yagi with switchable H, V, RHCP and LHCP and homebrew preamp. 23cm and 13cm 1.5 mtr homebrew dish with helical feeds. The unit has elevation thanks to my neighbour donating a sat dish acctuator! This will be the only array I am allowed on the house by the XYL and neighbours (more by the XYL hi). I shall also use it for local chin wagging on repeaters and little bits of SSB work during tropo etc. So what do you think, OK, hmmm not so good or fine for the job? Is there something I have missed, I will only get one chance of putting the unit up, so I have to get it almost perfect first time. AO-51 L-Band Packet Uplink

Hi All, I'am trying to access AO-51 9600Bd packet uplink on 1268.700MHz but had no succes so far. Maybe someone on the amsat bb group has some experience on this? I see on the downlink the message "Frames heard from PACB-1". I think it means the receiver is getting some signal but can't decode it. I believe my 23cm transmitter is working ok with 10w output into 26el yagi. Also the 9600bd is working OK because I can connect to local stations. I see no other traffic on the sat so it seems to me the L band receiver of ao-51 is not to sensitive. 73 Rob PE1ITR http://www.pe1itr.com

The possibility of using launch sites operated by India, Russia or Japan is being investigated. Dr. Achim Vollhardt, DH2VA, AMSAT-DL spoke on the status of the inter- planetary Mars mission AMSAT P5-A. P3E is closely linked to the P5E Mars Orbiter also being built by AMSAT-DL. This will be the first pri- vate venture spacecraft to go to Mars and will use the 2.4 GHz and 10 GHz Amateur Satellite Service frequency allocations. Dear friend! I like to ask you: If my Kenwood TR-751 is in scanning mode I hear impulse noise(about in every 0.1 second) from speaker if I near the speaker(5cm) or use a headphone if volume is 12clock position. Can you check it with other TR-751? What cause this problem? Other people doesnt have this problem with TR-751. I realised that if I rotate the main dial I hear also this sound .Why? GS-232 & SatPC32 12.8

Anyone else having trouble getting the GS-232 interface to work on ver 12.8? The rotor setup "Search" takes me to the KEPS folder, then I select the SDX folder. When the program is re-run a pop-up window indicates "SDXParem.exe is missing. I can't find it either using XP Search. I've tried this on a laptop that has never seen any other version of SatPC32 to avoid any conflicts. Went back to 12.7 which works fine. 73's Mike, WB8CXO

Make sure you get the correct N connector. You may have to trim some strands out of the center conductor if you get the wrong connector. I had the problem with a local Ham store that had connectors for RG8/RG11. Having started out on AO-10 with an IC-211 for 2m receive and a TS-180S+mm432/28+50w amp for 70cm, then a FRG-100+IC215mod as rec conv plus a TenTec Scout+DEMI 28/432+50w amp, Finally a FT-847, I'll take the FT-847 every time! The IC-910 is probably comprable! To avoid transmitting into your preamps or downconverters, modify the radio for Rx only. My flavor for S band is- I use an old TS700A 2 meter xcvr with the transmitter dissabled. It is so easy that when in the heat of battle to accidently transmit into the dc. These and similar radios are fairly cheap (less than $200), and depending on the dc cost is well worth it. Hi all, just wondering what you think is the best transceiver or transceivers for the satellites. By this I mean to be able to TX and RX at the same time (covering from 144mhz, 70cm and 23cm), was thinking possibly something like the ICOM IC910 (with 23cm board added) so that USB downlink and LSB uplink can be done (can the TS2000 do this also). Or is it better to have 2 seperate radios altogether, and use one for the uplink and one for the downlink? The gain increase for the antenna would be deltaG = (12/4)^2 = 9, or in dB = 10Log(9) = 9.5 dB. You get this gain in Tx and again in Rx so the total gain = 19 dB. So this means that the spacecraft will need to be 32-19 = 13 dB stronger than AO-40. So perhaps the S/C antenna would be larger and maybe the Tx higher power? AO-51 FM UHF Downlink Power Output?

I read a posting somewhere that said that because of eclipse AO-51's downlink power would be progressively decreased and then increased over time. I am unable to find information on what the UHF FM Downlink power has been set too since the end of May 2008. The reason this is off interest to me is that up until the beginning of June I was able to easily hear and work the bird at above 40 degrees, using an M2 Eggbeater antenna, with minimal drop out. Now even on the highest passes reception is very poor. I get good reception on all other satellite beacons so I know the station is working properly. Can anyone tell me what the ouput power curve was during the June time frame. Thanks, Brien KE7WB

Help for Landwehr El. 70 cm preamp GaAsfet

Hi all, in 1989/90 I bought a Landwehr Electronics preamp for 70 cm band and all was OK till now.A few weeks ago,for some reason,( may be an electrical shock during a storm ) the GaAsfet decided to die. Unfortunately it is impossible to read the name of the GaAsfet to be replaced and on Landwehr technical sheet for 70 cm preamp,the GaAsfet is listed as IC with no particular specification. No useful answer to my e-mails about the type of GaAsfet used from Landwehr El. in Germany. So,I hope someone can help me to find the name of that GaAsfet, I would appreciate. Thanks. So that you will know "where I am coming from", let me say that I am not an active satellite user. I am a semi-retired aerospace engineer, in that I work part time on a NASA project - the modification of a 747 to carry a sub-millimeter and infrared telescope into the stratosphere. I had my hands into amateur radio, literally, before Sputnik, though I did not get my license until years later. I cannot remember when I was not interested in space exploration. My first engineering job was testing rocket motors and associated prototype hardware for the first and second stages of what evolved into the Peacekeeper missile. And for a brief time I tried to be an educator. My opinion is that ASMO is a result of the stark realization by NASA, whether from within or forced on it by national leadership, that the supply of skills to build and operate spacecraft is rapidly drying up at a time when national goals are to expand our reach into space by returning to the Moon and perhaps sending people to Mars. Within the ASMO website is the statement that twenty-five persent of NASA employees are eligible to retire in less than five years. The problem is similar for the companies that NASA depends on to develop and operate its various systems. Indeed the entire aerospace industry, while facing major difficulties due to the current fuel prices, will have severe personnel shortages for decades. Even when engineers and scientists can be hired, they still face the problem of learning what it is that they are hired to do. A problem particularly acute for NASA since they tend to be doing things that have never been done before. ASMO is an attempt to find solutions to both of these areas of concern. You may ask how this relates to AMSAT. First, for those of you that work with students, you might get the opportunity, assuming of course that ASMO gets off the ground, to encourage students to seek a university program that will allow them to build and operate satellites. Presumably, you will have converted them to AMSAT members along their path. At the very least they should recognize that the amateur radio community is a friendly ally. And if you are an AMSAT member preparing to go to college, and have some interest in a program like ASMO, then by all means go for it. ( And keep an open mind for projects that can attract more students to follow you. ) For those of you not already working with students, here is your chance to influence not only the future scientists and engineers that will be building future spacecraft, but it is an excellent opportunity to connect with, and begin to influence, the universities that will be training them. Not so long ago, I read here some comments ( Dare I say grousing? ) about university satellite projects using amateur frequencies and assets, but then giving nothing back to the amateur radio community for their service. Meet with them. Propose activities to work together. Demonstrate to them that working with you is in their own self interest. Show your stuff. Of course you won't get all of them interested in your hobby, but you might get a lot more than you have now. Suppose you took the time to submit some ideas to NASA about the kind of things that a student project should include. Remember, the intent is to allow students to learn about building and operating an entire space probe. Point out that the students should include communications ( not just depend on the existing NASA communication system ) as part of the system. There is room for thought about communications experiements - perhaps a radar sensor array could be pointed at the Earth when not being used to scan the Moon. Students could learn a lot more about communications, if say the "radar" was commanded to listen first, then transmit back something that it "heard". Think outside the box. Don't limit yourself to the mindset that a radar sends an unmodulated burst and listens to the echo, which is processed for information. The same "box" can listen, process, then transmit. Do the math. Suggest alternatives. Point out that if the probe can be heard on the Earth with amateur radio equipment, then millions of people can listen. It certainly worked for Sputnik. Be realistic. If you suggest a system that you can kerchunk with an HT in your back yard, I don't think it will get much favor. But then again, the intent is to give student experience to a real probe that will gather significant data to be used for future lunar exploration. This program is not about what you want, but about what is a good experience for the students. If you think about it, you might find that "good for the students" might benefit you as well. You are the people who have shown interest in building and operating spacecraft. You are the kind of people that NASA wants to hear from. James Whitfield n5gui

I'm surprised how few people have mentioned parabolic dishes during this discussion about commercial Mode L antennas. L-band uplinks are mostly used in combination with a S-band downlink. Most people build L/S equipment with HEO satellites in mind. A single yagi or helix doesn't usually provide sufficient gain for L/S band use with a HEO satellite. You need the gain of a dish for satisfactory S-band reception of a HEO satellite. So one practical solution is an oversized dish with a L/S dual-band feed (helix or patch). A 4-foot dish was proven to work well for this on AO40. In my opinion a single 4-foot dish is more practical than, for example, cobbling together multiple yagi/helix antennas for S-band downlink and multiple yagi/helix antennas for L-band uplink. My 4-foot dish and dual-band patch feed were purchased commercially from Teksharp (Rick Fletcher KG6IAL). http://www.plumdragon.com/teksharp/hr_AO-40_products.htm The dual-band patch feed is sold fully assembled and tested, but the dish was a kit. I had to locally purchase 1/4 inch hardware cloth, cut it into 8 "petals", and use 200 zip ties to attach the petals to the frame of the dish. Hi Wayne and all I agree a four footer would be good for L/S. I used a four foot primestar for AO-40 (sobsob) on S band. I now have as yet untried dual feed for L/S for the same dish. I'm waiting fo the energy to connect everything up and give it try. I need another downconverter and a bird 43 L band slug, for tweeking. The feed is two concentric helix feeds on the same form for L/S. Should I not get desense to to proximity of the feeds it will be my future L/S antenna. Yes the primestar is solid and heavy, being off center feed it will lend itself to helix as opposed to a patch feed. I have heard the 3731AA downconverters from K5GNA have a good front end. I also have a UEK 3000 downconverter. Which will be be better, I don't know as yet. AO-51 Field Day mode

In reading through the e-mails to -bb, it seems L/U was well received among the membership on Field Day? I'd be interested in feedback about Field Day for consideration of next year's mode. Feel free to cc the -bb, as I'm sure it's of interest to many. 73, Drew KO4MA PS Congratulations to the handful of stations who were listening to AO-16 Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. I manually turned the satellite on several times on each of three passes, and several stations managed QSOs in the brief periods the old bird stayed on. Myself and the other command station will continue to try to restart the repeater when available, and maybe as temperatures change it will stay on a little longer, but no promises can be made.
