Commercial Mode L Antenna sources

I am thinking about putting in a 1.2 Ghz module in m IC910H. That has me looking at Mode L antennas. Until my browser blew up a few weeks ago, I had severa links to antenna candidates but have lost those now. Would appreciate any links to antennas that are usable with AO-51 and maybe the phase 3 birds when they launch. Thanks, Ron KA4KYI

Installing a classic clamp type N connector like the Amphenol 82-202 (UG-21D/U) on flexible coax with a real copper center conductor (RG-8,RG-213) is both easier and has a much higher probability of success than installing the common PL-259. You only have to make one easily accessible solder connection. I understand the budget differences. I am looking for options since my antenna building skills arent that great. It's unusual to see desense on 2m receive from a 70cm uplink, but I think the same solution can be applied. Many use a common 2m/70cm diplexer as a high pass/low pass filter. In this case you would want to feed the 2m antenna to the common port of the diplexer, and the 2m port of the diplexer to the input of either your preamp or rig if you do not have a preamp. This blocks your transmitted signal from the receiver/preamp input very effectively. http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/articles/Mode-J/ describes this for 70cm desense issues. Another option is to use a preamp with good filtering on the input. I had issues with Mode J desense with my Icom AG-35 preamp, but have none now that I have switched to SSB Electronics preamps. SEEDS-II heared in FM packet !

Picked up the last part of a pass of SEEDS-II today. Satellite was in FM 1k2 packet mode. First time that I heared this mode over Europe. Freq: 437.485 MHz. APRS FD

Are there any success stories for APRS and FD? If so, can you share them? We (W4IY) worked a couple stations through VO-52 and I was surprised how many SSB ops were on. I used a couple of omnis, TS-2K and Ham Radio Deluxe for doppler correction. Nice to see all the activity! Stu W7IY

The quality of the devices and the design of the amp is significant. In the cellular world at 850 I have seen cheap poorly designed (talking thousands for these units) TTA's generate more crud from minimial colocated signals then the well designed cheap ones. All the units I now use have a high IP3 point with integrated filters or duplexers. The unit ADC Telecom used to make had the filter integrated in the housing (machined out of a solid aluminum block). I was able to use these in downtown settings without fear of intermod. Newer units work as well but now have a seperate filter from the housing. Moral of the story: It's design not price that is the key. Cheaper not always badder. Compare specs. Other suggestion would be to establish the power level where the interference begins. Though it is not linear it will give u a sense of the degree of interaction between the UL and DL antennas. Andrew is onto something when he suggests different preamp sensitivities to out of band interference. One can also just have front-end oveload of energy on frequency. I have not had any issues with either Mode-UV or Mode-VU with my system where the antennas are separated 5-feet on a metal boom. My preamps both sue mgf-1302 GasFets. Both were special designs and not commercial mfrs. But I will say that ARR preamps seem to work well as do Kuhne Engineering (DB6NT) designs. The diplexer solution works for out of band interference when used in front of the preamp. In band front-end blockage can be handled by filtering the transmit coax line either with a bandpass filter or 1/4 wave coax stub tuned for the receive frequency. I got significant de-sensing of my 2 meter downlink from my 70cm uplink at Field Day. I know a good part of it was due to the short cross-boom (about 4 feet) I was using. I would like to decrease the de-sense on this set-up before I permanently install it at my home station. I have tried at times to give it a shot of RF uplink, "just in case". I mean after all AO-7 came back to us! Maybe it just needs enough up RF to jump start it. Delfi-C3 RASCAL OS X trouble

Hi All, I've been trying to get RASCAL to run on my Intel Mac mini (10.4.11). I've installed soylatte16 to get the JRE 1.6 compatibility, but when I launch the .jar I get the following error: Unknown error javax/swing/GroupLayout$Group The is not found on your computer. please check: javax/swing/GroupLayout$Group or reinstall Rascal I'm trying to run the .jar from my home directory, I kept the folder structure the same (i.e. the lib folder is inside the RASCAL folder). My station is an FT-847, into 11 elements on both 2M and 70cm. The two yagis are on the same polarization plane, perpendicular to the cross-boom. Coax runs are about 50 feet. The cross-boom is about 4 feet separation but will be closer to 10 feet on my home station. I had no external pre-amps in place during FD but will have at least a 70cm mast-mounted pre-amp at home. When uplinking on Mode B, I hear some static on the downlink at approximately S-4 to S-6. This effect is less pronounced on SSB than on CW but is still noticeable. I did not notice this when uplinking on 2 meters with 70cm down, but it's probably because I didn't have to swish the dits to find my downlink when working the Mode J FM birds. 73 de W0HV, Jim in Raymore, MO Light travels faster than sound... mirage preamp gasfets

Hi all, I have a pair of Mirage mast mount preamps, (1) KP-2/2M for 144mhz and a KP-2/440 for 70cm both that have blown GasFets. My old house for some reason ate a lot of those FET's and i used to replace them once in a while when it blew. But, I have moved, had the preamps in a box for last several years and no longer have any idea what device each of them took. They were bought in the late 90's. Mirage is trying to find someone to help me but haven't been able to yet so I thought I'd try here and see if anyone had a schematic, or knew what FET's might be in each of those preamps! In SatPC32, go to the tracking tab, then preview. Enter the QSO time, and look at the range entry across the bottom. Estimating Distance

>From this morning's email...any ideas? Hey Clint, VE4WMK/handheld called ME last night during a 32-degree pass! I was flabbergasted. We made the contact, and the QSL is on its way to Winnipeg. I am soooo hooked!!!!!\ Do you know of a formula I can use to get a "ballpark" estimate of the distance my signal travelled to AO-51? When we made the contact, the satellite was no more than 20 degrees, at a heading of about 320 degrees. I was simply amazed to make that contact, given those numbers, from handheld to handheld. I know my coordinates, and I'm sure I can find AO-51's orbital data from the AMSAT site. I'm just wondering if there is a way to get some kind of estimate on that line-of-sight distance. Something else to try, hook up the transmit side of the rig to a dummy load and see how your receive is. It may be something in the rig causing it, not the proximity of the antennas. I get this problem sometimes and have other vhf/UHF antennas that are maybe 50 feet away from the satellite antennas. A good start might be a "diplexer" at the antenna to terminate the energy you do not want presented at the receiver. Put a termination on the uhf port and stick it in the vhf side of the feedline, assuming you are running two coax cables down to the shack. If the VHF is desensing the UHF, do the same thing in the UHF feedline with a termination in the VHF port. You don't say how much power you were running, but there comes a time when too much is too much. Using two runs of 100 feet of 9913 on my TS2000, I only need the diplexer on the UHF coax. Funny how the third harmonic on VHF gets to be awfully close to the UHF frequency of interest. My watt meter can't tell the difference in UHF or 3 times VHF when I try to read the power. Alfa-Spid AzEl Rotator Experiences or Recommendations?

Hi, It is beginning to look as if it is time to replace my venerable Yaesu rotators after 20 years of abuse. I was wondering what experience people have had with the "new" AzEl rotator? (The http://www.alfaradio.ca/alfaspid.html web page calling it the "new" rotator was last updated in 2003, so that is probably any relatively recent purchase.) Doing the Google and checking eHam picked up a lot of discussion, but mostly of the standard Az rotators. The reports are mostly highly positive, with a small minority complaining of flimsy electrical connectors and gears. The latter seem to apply to older units. The M2 units are certainly impressive, but physically large enough to be a problem, as well as being pricey. I'm not sure of his email connection at his portable QTH for this week, his grid is IO87rj, I am in CN89wk should someone know how to figure the distance I'd like to know. Somewhere there is web link that will figure that. Also does anyone know his favorite downlink spot on AO-7, time is too short to hunt around. Should Paul and I make this QSO it might even best a good dx connect by our dear friend K3SZH. Hi all, I listened to the Robinson contact via the IRLP Discovery Reflector on the Internet on the 25th. Several of the other ARISS mentors also listened in. Nancy WH6PN did her normal outstanding job. At our weekly telecon meeting later that same day we did discuss the audio levels and time delays; something we always discuss after a telebridge contact. For this contact there was a delay of about 5.5 to 6 minutes between real time and when it came across the Internet. So if one was listening only at the real time AOS and gave up after a minute or 2; then you would have missed the contact. There is always about a 5 minute delay of the audio when it comes across the Internet. I believe that if you are listening in on an IRLP repeater that the audio is delayed only a few seconds. At the moment we have had 350 successful contacts. I believe we have had 3 contacts that were deemed outright failures. We have had I think 2 or 3 that were considered failures on the scheduled contact day but were rescheduled and were successful on the 2nd attempt. ARISS says congratulations to all of the school groups and hams around the world who have made that happen. Often times, that is the first satellite contact for the hams. When Kenneth or I post the ARISS announcements, we do try to indicate if Echolink or IRLP will be included but often times it is a last minute decision. If it is a telebridge contact, then the odds are pretty high that it will be on one or both. If it is a direct contact, then it is up to the ham group doing the contact to decide if they want to feed audio to IRLP, Echolink, or to their own webpage as it is an extra burden on them. ARISS does not require a group to do a simulcast but does encourage it. If we know it might happen, then I usually indicate "watch". If we know it is going to happen, the I usually indicate "should be" or something along those lines. As far as NASA TV providing coverage, we have been told to not expect it and not to ask for it. Remember ARISS is a guest on the ISS and we don't want to wear out our welcome. So ARISS does not request coverage. If on the oft chance that a camera does show an ARISS contact in progress, then consider it a blessing. Hope this helps. ARISS encourages everyone to find a school, fill out the application, and get on the waiting list. I think you will find it a great experience. Think of it as your most tension filled Field Day that you will ever do. RS-15 heard again

I just copied the beacon on 29.351, after not hearing anything for a long tmie. It's sending relatively short duration pulses today... 1 second on, 2 seconds off, give or take... later in the ascending pass(as I write this) , times are up to greater-than 4 seconds off /.75 seconds on Does that mean the spacecraft is warm? I heard from a few folks with a direct email. One told me that he did not measure his elements. He just sorted them by size. The purpose of my email was to call attention that you can not do that and get the maximum results from the product. It can be difficult to call attention to a mistake by someone with a good reputation. I may add the polarity switcher and appreciate your "heads up". June 29, 2008 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-180.03 26 June 2008 For immediate release IARU Officer Nominations Agreed for 2009-2014 Term The Administrative Council (AC) of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) held its annual meeting on 24-25 June 2008 in Konstanz, Germany and took the following actions. 1. The consultative process leading to nominations for IARU President and Vice President for the five-year term beginning on 9 May 2009 was completed between the AC and the American Radio Relay League, the IARU member-society that serves as the International Secretariat. IARU President Larry Price, W4RA had announced in 2007 that he was not available to serve an additional term. The AC agreed that Vice President Tim Ellam, VE6SH and Region 1 President Ole Garpestad, LA2RR are suitably qualified to serve as IARU President and Vice President, respectively. Their nominations will be offered to the member-societies for ratification. 2. A comprehensive review and update of the working document that defines the additional spectrum requirements of the amateur and amateur-satellite services was conducted. Requests from the amateur satellite community for support of additional allocations were considered and referred to the IARU Satellite Adviser for additional information. 3. The IARU International Coordinator for Emergency Communications, Hans Zimmermann, HB9AQS/F5VKP, presented his report in person. He noted the outstanding performance of radio amateurs in China who responded to the recent tragic earthquake emergency. 4. Reports of the other IARU international coordinators and advisers were received. They are International Beacon Project Coordinator Peter Jennings, AB6WM/VE3SUN; Satellite Adviser Hans van de Groenendaal, ZS6AKV; EMC Adviser Christian Verholt, OZ8CY; and Interim Monitoring System International Coordinator Chuck Skolaut, K0BOG. 5. An additional progress report was received from an ad hoc committee that is investigating the future role and structure of the IARU. Work since the previous AC meeting has refined the structure and identified the remaining issues to be resolved. 6. A resolution offered by Region 1 that seeks to improve the operating standards of radio amateurs was adopted. The AC endorses and recommends the principles set out in the booklet “Ethics and Operating Procedures for the Radio Amateur” by John Devoldere, ON4UN and Marc Demeuleneere , ON4WW, and encourages each IARU Region to consider this booklet, with a view to adopting it, including any Regional variations that might be felt appropriate. 7. A study of the international QSL bureau system was commissioned. The study will seek input from member-societies on the problems they face in light of escalating postage and other expenses, and the anticipated impact of electronic confirmation systems such as the ARRL’s Logbook of the World. 8. The three-year strategic plan for the development of support for amateur radio frequency allocations was reviewed and renewed for the period 2008-2011. The principal focus is on preparations for the 2011 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-11), especially the attainment of an amateur allocation in the vicinity of 500 kHz. 9. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) meetings at which IARU representation will be required for the coming year were identified, and plans for representation were reviewed. 10. The plans of Region 3 for the IARU presence at Telecom Asia 2008 (Bangkok, 2-5 September) and of the International Secretariat for Telecom World 2009 (Geneva, 5-9 October) were reviewed. 11. The budget for 2009-2011 as presented by the International Secretariat (ARRL) was reviewed. The budget includes provision for financial contributions from the three regional organizations to defray a portion of the expenses, in accordance with previously adopted policy. 12. The 29 March 2009 implementation of the worldwide exclusive allocation of 7100-7200 kHz adopted at the 2003 WRC was noted and the many contributors to this achievement were recognized. 13. “Amateur Radio: Your Resource in Disaster and Emergency Communication” was selected as the theme for the next World Amateur Radio Day, April 18, 2009. 14. Status reports from each of the three IARU regional organizations were received and discussed. The next regional conference will be that of Region 1, to be held in Cavtat, Croatia in mid-November. This, to commemorate the 45th Anniversary of Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova becoming the first woman in space. Tereshkova flew to orbit on June 16th 1963 as pilot onboard Vostok 6. Her call sign during the flight was Chaika. She spent 71 hours in space orbiting the Earth 48 times. Since that time women have made a significant contribution to space exploration and many of them have been licenced Radio Amateurs. A few of the many notable women space explorers since Valentina Tereshkova include American Sally Ride and the United Kingdom's Helen Sharman to mention only a few. Sharman was also the first UK woman to be issued a ham radio call for her flight. She operated from the Mir Space Station as GB1MIR And very apropos for this type of commemorative operation. I am putting together a 436CP30. I received it this week from M Square. They sent 12 1/2 inch elements for the first director. After checking with M Square I have cut off 1/4 inch per their antenna dimensions. I just wanted to alert anyone who might also have recently acquired this antenna. Easy enough mistake to remedy. There was NO audio from the telebrige WH6PN on either Echolink or the IRLP Discovery Reflector, and NASA TV's 'live coverage' segment made absolutely NO mention of the event - in fact, no 'on-board' coverage was shown at all! ISS was out of range of TDRSS earlier, but would surely have been back in touch by then? A camera at the ARISS position should have been easy to arrange, even if there is not one already present in that segment. What happened? Was there some other pressing event that could not be re-scheduled? A technical fault (though nothing was mentioned of such)? Did 'dirtside' cancel at the last minute? All Internet links showed the event would run as advertised right up to time. Echolink *AMSAT* Conference gives feedback on who is connected, and I observed 6 other stations on at that time (incidentally 3:45 AM next morning here in New Zealand). That is 6 parents or grandparents (like me) keen to demonstrate live one-on-one communications with an Astronaut IN SPACE, who are now extremely disappointed. For myself, it was my first attempt at such a conference, and I am _really_ glad I tried solo without getting 3 grandkids out of bed. Despite this disappointment, I will try again (solo), and given at least _some_ measure of success am likely to bring said children and perhaps others to witness the event some time in the future. THESE are your REAL audience - the Astronauts, Scientists and Engineers of the future! Besides, the exercise is NOT 'Carrying Ham radio events', but more an issue of continuing existing coverage, in similar manner to one of the Astronauts doing a video-tour of the premises (which they do from time to time). As I had pointed out, there is probably a camera already there - the 'Ham Shack' is in or near the 'Kitchen' area, which has been 'vid-casted' before. Can we do better? USB to serial interface

Hi All, There have been discussions on this BB in the past about the best USB to serial interface units. I seem to recall that there was one reccommended unit (not very cheap) which had the advantage of not reallocating COM port numbers each time the PC was restarted. I think it had 4 serial ports. Can anyone advise which this unit was Or alternatively recommend a good unit? Thanks and 73s Jim G3WGM

The schedule on ao27.org has been a little off for a few months now and shows AO-27 as being on when it is well past the USA. The schedule on the satellite is working good though, and will turn on when it is about 29 degrees North on ascending passes. So FD stations can assume it will turn on for the afternoon passes, although of course it will be off for the night passes. I worked it a few days ago and it was sounding great. 73 Sam KC2LRC

Am I looking at the skid wrong? Looks like 27 will not turn on in analogue mode till after it has passed the US. My tracker shows the 06/28/2008 18:24z turn on just as the northern border sees LOS. I tried to be diligent and do my searching before asking this question, but with no search ability on amsat-bb and google coming up near empty..... here goes!!! Are there any "popular" designs for AO51 antennas? I have my converters (3 of them actually, a drake, a direc broadbcast TV converted with teftape and a kit built down east microwave D/C) leftover from AO40 days. But I seem to have dismantled or lost or sold or something to my dish I used. I have various dishes from directv sized to starband sized. Is there any particular feed people are finding to work better than others? Is there getting to be a "common" setup for 2.4? Thanks!! -James KI0KN

Bob, No question that this issue is something which needs to be revisited and clarified, with the input of the AMSAT users, over the next year. For now, I will take the answer to mean that the ISS will be treated as any other orbiting amateur relay package, regardless of where it is bolted. And certainly for the 100 point bonus, which question started all this. BTW, good to work you at W3ADO this AM. My antenna decided to swing 360, and the phone rang from someone at the FD committee at the same time, so I could not get back to you. Alan WA4SCA

ao-7 vhf beacon report

Has anyone noticed the mode-B beacon is behaving in an interesting new way? Just now (over NA 05:00Z today) I recorded it sending a repeating pattern that didn't seem to be CW, just a pattern of dits numbering 1 5 7 repeating over and over. The tone quality seemed very "hash", and varied in width somewhat gradually narrower and wider to about 75Hz a-la aurora. I have heard this pattern before on a different occasion, but at the time i didn't know for sure if it was coming from Oscar-7. This time I know for certain that it was coming from Oscar-7! Also, that time, the sequence was playing-out very much faster than it was tonight, so fast that I could not make out the actual sequence, only that it was repeating, probably at least twice as fast as tonight. Does this signal have any meaning, or is it just a glitch brought-on by so many years of radiation? on an un-related note: I wonder how many hours the electronics have on them? I doubt any modern satellite can ever touch the record-setting performance of this old one . As the old saying goes... they don't make 'em like they used-to! To which I retort: why not?!? Box 310905 Newington, CT 06131-0905 USA FAX: +1 860 594 0259 E-Mail: iaru(a)iaru.org 26 June 2008 For immediate release IARU Officer Nominations Agreed for 2009-2014 Term The Administrative Council (AC) of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) held its annual meeting on 24-25 June 2008 in Konstanz, Germany and took the following actions. 1. The consultative process leading to nominations for IARU President and Vice President for the five-year term beginning on 9 May 2009 was completed between the AC and the American Radio Relay League, the IARU member-society that serves as the International Secretariat. IARU President Larry Price, W4RA had announced in 2007 that he was not available to serve an additional term. The AC agreed that Vice President Tim Ellam, VE6SH and Region 1 President Ole Garpestad, LA2RR are suitably qualified to serve as IARU President and Vice President, respectively. Their nominations will be offered to the member-societies for ratification. 2. A comprehensive review and update of the working document that defines the additional spectrum requirements of the amateur and amateur-satellite services was conducted. Requests from the amateur satellite community for support of additional allocations were considered and referred to the IARU Satellite Adviser for additional information. 3. The IARU International Coordinator for Emergency Communications, Hans Zimmermann, HB9AQS/F5VKP, presented his report in person. He noted the outstanding performance of radio amateurs in China who responded to the recent tragic earthquake emergency. 4. Reports of the other IARU international coordinators and advisers were received. They are International Beacon Project Coordinator Peter Jennings, AB6WM/VE3SUN; Satellite Adviser Hans van de Groenendaal, ZS6AKV; EMC Adviser Christian Verholt, OZ8CY; and Interim Monitoring System International Coordinator Chuck Skolaut, K0BOG. 5. An additional progress report was received from an ad hoc committee that is investigating the future role and structure of the IARU. Work since the previous AC meeting has refined the structure and identified the remaining issues to be resolved. 6. A resolution offered by Region 1 that seeks to improve the operating standards of radio amateurs was adopted. The AC endorses and recommends the principles set out in the booklet “Ethics and Operating Procedures for the Radio Amateur” by John Devoldere, ON4UN and Marc Demeuleneere , ON4WW, and encourages each IARU Region to consider this booklet, with a view to adopting it, including any Regional variations that might be felt appropriate. 7. A study of the international QSL bureau system was commissioned. The study will seek input from member-societies on the problems they face in light of escalating postage and other expenses, and the anticipated impact of electronic confirmation systems such as the ARRL’s Logbook of the World. 8. The three-year strategic plan for the development of support for amateur radio frequency allocations was reviewed and renewed for the period 2008-2011. The principal focus is on preparations for the 2011 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-11), especially the attainment of an amateur allocation in the vicinity of 500 kHz. 9. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) meetings at which IARU representation will be required for the coming year were identified, and plans for representation were reviewed. 10. The plans of Region 3 for the IARU presence at Telecom Asia 2008 (Bangkok, 2-5 September) and of the International Secretariat for Telecom World 2009 (Geneva, 5-9 October) were reviewed. 11. The budget for 2009-2011 as presented by the International Secretariat (ARRL) was reviewed. The budget includes provision for financial contributions from the three regional organizations to defray a portion of the expenses, in accordance with previously adopted policy. 12. The 29 March 2009 implementation of the worldwide exclusive allocation of 7100-7200 kHz adopted at the 2003 WRC was noted and the many contributors to this achievement were recognized. 13. “Amateur Radio: Your Resource in Disaster and Emergency Communication” was selected as the theme for the next World Amateur Radio Day, April 18, 2009. 14. Status reports from each of the three IARU regional organizations were received and discussed. The next regional conference will be that of Region 1, to be held in Cavtat, Croatia in mid-November. Send all your messages to ALL and include any other callsigns in the text of the QSL message. BE SURE TO CLEAR OUT YOUR MESSAGE memories before a pass so that you have room to capture any incoming. Hi, Question. I know that a QSO WITH the ISS does not count as a space contact for FD. Is it also true that a contact THROUGH the digi does not count? I got a call from a local FD group, and the Q&A list does not explicitly rule that out. Or at least it can be read that way. It looks as if the "amateur radio satellite" part does knock it out. Alan WA4SCA Q. Why doesn't our contact with the International Space Station count for the satellite bonus? A. While the ISS is be definition, the purpose of the satellite QSO bonus is to complete an Earth to Earth contact via an amateur radio satellite.

AO51 435.150 downlink ?

Hi all ! For 70cm I have a 2x8 elements beam. Fixed RHCP polarization. Downlink of AO51 on 435.300 is always strong, even though I do not have a pre-amp. Now, the 435.150 downlink I always hear very weak. a) is this because of the fact that AO51 uses LHCP on 435.150 ? b) anyone else confirming the same sharp difference between RHCP & LHCP on the AO51 downlink ? (guess this could be an argument NOT to use circular polarization) Reason for asking: I have now a 23cm antenna, and 10W out of my TS2000X and so I wanted to give the 23cm up / 70cm downlink a try ... but of course I first need to hear the downlink :-) ... yes, I know I should use pre-amps ... ! 73, Henk, PA3GUO

I can send APRS packets through GO-32 at will with 5 watts and an Arrow antenna on a tripod if the elevation is greater than 30 degrees. Last time I heard anyone else via GO-32 was on June 13 (VA3SU-1 at 13:14Z). A look at http://mangrove.findu.com/cgi-bin/pcsat.cgi?absolute=1 shows the current usage seems to be in Asia and Europe (or perhaps North America lacks Igates listening to GO-32). GO32 is in APRS mode for Field Day. I just checked on the LIVE DOWNLINK on the GO32 APRS web page: http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/GO32-ops.html And there seems to be active users testing. So if you want an uncongested satellite that anyone can work with APRS at 9600 baud you might consdier it. (The D7 and D700 are ready to go!) I also noticed that ISS is in APRS mode (1200 baud) so unless it changes before the weekend, that is also a possiblity. Bob, WB4APR

Version 0.3.0 of the General Astrodynamics Library has been released. It can be downloaded from the project website here: http://homepage.mac.com/pclwillmott/GAL/index.html Updates in this release: * ODE Integrator sub-library created. Lunar position and velocity routine added to ephemerides sub-library. Routine implements LUNAR SOLUTION ELP version ELP/MPP02 Solar position and velocity routine added to ephemerides sub-library. Acceleration from spherical harmonics routine added to gravity sub-library. Many routines updated for internal compatibilty with the upcoming official IAU SOFA C library. R-matrices have had indicies reversed compared to GAL 0.2 and earlier. Work will now be started on the classical keplerian models, and atmosphere models. The General Astrodynamics Library (GAL) is a numerical library for C and C++ programmers. It is free software under the GNU General Public License. The library provides a wide range of astrodynamical routines such as ephemerides, earth orientation, and orbit propagation. There are over 225 functions in total with an extensive test suite. Excellent pass for Delphi-C3/DO-64 over VK

Hi all, Just had an excellent pass for this satellite and managed to capture and upload 550 packets of telemetry to their servers. tracking programs

Been "off the air" with sats once the demise of AO40 but with all the new birds up, thought I'd give it another go. Since hardware and software have changed a great deal, thought I'd get some opinions. I have a Yaesu FT736r and and Yaesu FT847. G5400b rotor and a 22 element 2M cross beam and a larger 440 (not sure how may elements) beam. All setup on 2.4ghz receive with a converted direct broadcast box i modified and recently finished an LVB tracker. So the big question remains.... what software? Kind of narrowed it to either SCRAP or Nova, but any suggestions good bad or otherwise? I used to use WinOrbit before but would like to use az/el AND radio tuning with the 847... According to the schedule posted by Mineo JE9PEL earlier, FO-29 will be fired up on the 02:31Z pass over Japan. It will remain in the light as it comes down the Atlantic. So that means around 03:00Z, FO-29 will come in range of the far east US and should still be on. It will be a pretty low pass but it will be well in range of Europe so contacts with DX stations will be posible (DX stations can participate in Field Day by giving their station class and section "DX" although they can't submit their entries.) When the bird gets down to about the latitude of New York City, it will enter the eclipse and turn off shortly after, as the batteries are not in good shape. 73, Sam KC2LRC

Did you check the Radio Shack web site? They do have manuals for discontiuned products there. Not sure about rotors. I have a Radio Shack 15-1220 rotator and control unit and do not know how to connect the 5 wire cable. The control unit has terminals numbered 1-5, but the rotator has 5 screw terminals "without" numbers. do not want to damage the unit by hooking it up incorrectly. FO-29 and Field Day?

For the past several years I have used FO-29 for field day. Is this sat usable? The sat status appears that it is in a questionable state. I have never used a FM mode J sat for field day, and would assume that it would turn into what CBer's call a key down contest, were the biggest amp wins due to the capture effect. It seems that mode J-FM birds are already crowded during a regular day. I could only imagine that it would be very difficult to work during FD. I had listen to VO-52 during FD and noticed that there was not any FD traffic on the bird. Could we use this sat if FO-29 is not functional? If so, that is the satellite I plan on trying to work for FD. I miss RS-12/13 Good bird for FD. Thanks, Chris KQ6UP
