Cubesat Antenna Modeling and truth?

A big problem on small satellites (cubesats) is how to match antennas. Simply connecting a network analyzer, or MFJ antenna analizer or any other test equpment won't work. Connecting a cable to the satelltie model will completely upset the near-field and any useful measurements. Especiallly, trying to match a 2 meter antenna to a 4" cubesat! I wonder if the best way is to simply do the best you can with EZNEC or other modeling tool, then build a true fidelity model spaceframe with the fully designed and implemented mathcing network, but reserve one side of the model to have a field-strength meter on it connected internally to the actual TX/RX cable to the antenna. Then using long insulated dielectric "tweakers" just tune the matching circuit for max. (Of coures getting out of the way after each tweak).. Also, then comparing the results with a similar field strength meter and tuned dipole as a reference at the same distance. We tried lots of methods, including building in a directional coupler and having it report its reflected power via telemetery... but I think the one above is what I will do next time. When the spacecraft is small, relative to a quarter wave, everything near the spacecraft and any wires/cables have drastic impact.. Has anyone had other successes? Just thinking what we should be telling these students that are building cubesats. A 6" whip for 70cm is not too bad on a 4" cubesat, but 2m is compltely different... Bob, WB4APR

Creating Artworks based on Delfi-C3... or ?

Dear all, Previous days it was observed already, then in periods of maximum signal strengths on LHCP, there is a minimum on RCHP (and visa versa). Triggered by that I wanted to try something else: simulations reception of the two antennas of my 'X' antenna (2x6 elements DK7ZB), and plot the signal strengths over time. Most likely this can be considered as a totally useless experiment, but I wanted to do this for once (could have taken another satellite as well). Both antennas are only 6 cm distance from eachother, which is compensated by a bit of extra coax cable. The two cables enter the shack. One cable has been connected to an FT817. Other cable was connected to an TS2000. Using this set-up I did a simulatious reception of Delfi C3, and plotted the received signals above eachother: Result: Maximum on one antenna is minimum on the other, and visa versa. Did not hear anybody on AO-51 LS mode this morning pass 5 May 1512Z. Could be I have a weak setup? Using M2 yagi 23CM35EZ uplink (9 watts out) and 14 turn helix on downlink with 2400-144 downconverter. SatPC32 Doppler.SQF file set at AO-51,2401200.0,1268700,FM,FM,NOR,2256000.0,0. Hello all, The weekend presented a chance to gather some telemetry on AO-16. The telemetry looks nominal. Recently, the satellite seems to go silent on a nearly daily basis. Increasing eclipse periods remain a likely explanation, but we remain open to other explanations at this point. To this end, I have turned AO-16 OFF for a few days to rest and ensure that its batteries will be given a chance to become fully charged. Following its several day rest period, we'll try to conduct more tests to better determine what type of operations that AO-16 is currently able to support. Can you understand what she is saying before SSTV? She announces special code. Can you chatch the special code? I guess it is herad to catch it if it is clear condition. Thanks, Tony -K2MO Hello, I use Kansas City Tracker to operate my CDE Ham II azimuth rotor and Yaesu/Kenpro G500a elevation rotor. Modifying the G500a control box was a breeze! The rear panel has an eight wire terminal strip, although only wires 1-6 are actually used. I ran the common motor control wire to terminal #8. Now all necessary wires for automatic control are available at the back panel. I found my KCT board here on the BB a couple of years ago. . Seems like there should be a few more out there for sale? I think that the going rate is in the $40-$50 range? Just make sure that you have a PC with an available ISA slot. The most modern PC I've found with an ISA slot is a Pentium 2 450 MHz. It runs Windows 98 quite nicely, and SATPC32 operates my Icom radios and KCT quite nicely. I also use InstantTrack/Instanttune, which can be run in Windoze or DOS. K7RDG satellite activity on 3 May

Hi! Thanks to all the stations that worked K7RDG at the Larry Warren Cochise Amateur Radio Association hamfest yesterday. We made 31 contacts on 3 passes (2 on AO-51, 1 on SO-50). All stations who made contacts will receive K7RDG QSL cards directly. Although it will not be necessary to send anyone a card to receive a K7RDG card, I will act as the QSL manager for yesterday's activity only. I am not the normal QSL manager for the K7RDG call, but have offered to take care of the QSL-related stuff from yesterday. I'll send a longer report on the hamfest activity and my other activity from southeastern Arizona (including last night's quick road trip east to grid DM51) after I return home. I'm still in grid DM41 at the moment, but may be able to visit another unusual Arizona grid on my return trip. No guarantees. 73! GO-32, APRS mobile, and wasted D7's...

The good news is that it is easier to see one's self via GO32 than via the ECHO satellite, because GO32 has a PTT delay some of the time. So your radio will have turned around in time to hear your packet come back... But being in the mobile, you probably only get a good -downlink- for the center 3 minutes of a good high pass. But you can get in on the uplink from horizon to horizon if you are running your typical 50 watts mobile. That is why we need LOTS more people Igating the downlink. The best way to do this is to encourage all D7 owners that do not use their D7 routinely, to not just set it in the closet, but leave it hooked to an Igate all the time they are not using it. Connect this through a SHORT coax to a 19" vertical whip. This station will receive GO-32 downlink packets for the center 3 to 5 minutes of the best two passess per day... And if we have enough people doing this (say a dozen over the USA), then at least one of them will always have a good chance of hearing each packet and feeding the APRS-IS... Thus giving mobiles all over the continant the ability to get out a positon, messsage, or email from anywhere. And since coax loss is the big bugga... The better way is to put the D7 up near the antenna and run only the 3 wire RS-232 down to the shack... Then you don't need a pre-amp... Shucks, you can even use the same RS-232 to remotely control the radio, and use it for other weak-signal reception work as needed too... Bob, WB4APR

Nice recording with an FM signal peaking at S8 at TCA 18 degrees elevation. SSTV is also good but as usual i will have to fiddle with the slant correction parameters. This MMSTV version i got seems to have an auto slant correction algorythm but as usual i found that at LOS... :( I will check for the next pass over here at 0320Z it will be an higher one. P.S. FT 847 and Doppler for Delfi

Hi, Having fun here with Delfi and RASCAL. Keeping on tune and in sync is quite tricky though. Using computer control via the CAT port the Yaesu FT847 seems to limited to 10Hz steps. When manual tuning the available steps are Normal 0.1, 1, 10 Hz. Default 1Hz ( page 23 in the manual) Does anyone on the bb know if the CAT frequency step can be modified, perhaps by a hidden menu or similar. BTW this 10Hz limitation seems to apply to the FT817 as well. Yaesu G-800 to replace G-5500 Azimuth rotor

Dear All, I have a Yaesu G-5500 rotator set with the azimuth rotor being faulty. I have not got the time to open up and check that yet. However, it appears that the azimuth rotor of the G-5500 is similar (or the same?) as that of the Yaesu G-800. I would be glad if anyone could kindly advice if the G-800 rotor will replace the G-5500 azimuth rotor well? And will the G-5500 control box be able to control it? FCAL still alive

Greetings, Just copied ANDE FCAL (cat. #29667) on 437.385 during the 1140 UTC pass over EN62. Space-Track has predicted re-entry of May 2. It is amazing how low this "cannon ball" is. This last pass was a near over head pass and the range was 162 miles at closest approach. Height is 138 miles. Even so, reception is difficult. There seems to be many deep nulls in the antenna pattern of this bird. Some packets from yesterday and today. DELFI-C3 and SEEDS over West Malaysia

Dear All, This morning I was very happy to have copied very great and interesting signals from both DELFI-C3 and SEEDS. Pass details are as below: Time: 1035 Local or 0235 UTC Date: 04 May 2008 Max Elevation: 76 degrees Tracking: Object E The first half of the pass was used to track Delfi-C3 with 180 packet frames decoded. Just after TCA, Delfi-C3 stopped TX suddenly and appeared briefly again shortly. Can anyone explain this phenomenon? After that it was no longer heard even on 145.870 MHz +/- so I QSYed to SEEDS. To my surprise, SEEDS was in Digitalker mode. Also manage to decode 3 SSTV pictures (they are the same). Below are some interesting screenshot, images and recordings. I think that crazy tuning pattern boils down to this: If the station you hear is not using doppler they will appear to be going up the band. Then a station that is using doppler control may appear stationary or moving up the band depending upon how fast your doppler AND their doppler are updating. More frequent updates are better and eliminate a bunch of tuning. I think the default is around 100 hz. I use 20 hz. For your own signal, I'm assuming that your are hearing yourself. I often have to tune either the uplink or the downlink as much as 1500 Hz to match the uplink to the downlink. You are right on the LSB up and the USB down. Don't give up, you are almost there. Don't worry about the other stations. Pick a open spot and tune yourself first using the CAT Tuning window. I believe I usually have to tune the Uplink UP. Once you do it the first time, you'll get the hand of it. Also, sometimes when I first select an SSB bird, the Downlink and Uplink frequencies will be a ways off from the frequencies shown in the CAT Tuning window. If this happens, go to the up and down buttons just to the right of the Downlink and Uplink display, click the 20 up and then the 20 down. The Downlink and Uplink should jump to the proper frequency. This may have been caused by my CAT delay not being high enough, but I haven't observed whether changing that fixed it. I can hear people talking and have to constantly manually tune them in in crazy patterns. One persons doppler will go up and another will go down. It is like I am chasing people that are constantly changing their transmit frequency and does not fit a normal doppler change. Another thing is that I cannot tune myself in at all. It is like I am transmitting in the wrong sideband. I am recieving the downlink in USB and it is my understanding that the uplink is supposed to be LSB. The program I am using is SatPC32 that CAT tunes an IC910H into a M2 2MCP14 - M2436CP30 both with right hand polarization. Just trying to get away from the FM Birds and try some new ones and looking for some help to figure out what I may be overlooking or doing wrong. Thanks...

96 packet uploaded to the DELFI C 3 server a near overhead pass this evening and 45 seconds after Orbitron confirm he's was out of eclipse TLM start to flow in and signal peaked S6 at TCA. KEPS start to be off again by +- 45 seconds. DELFI was in science mode at 145.930 With 263 miliwatt the little box seems in good shape RAP 1 temperature was -68.1C and RAP 2 at 10.497C If you ask me what's RAP mean for i will tell you i don't know. Wouter, PE4WJ provided the following status of Delfi-C3: + Telemetry indicates that all solar panels and antennas have deployed properly and indicates nominal values for all housekeeping values. + Payload data has started to stream in, enabling the team to generate IV curves of the Thin Film Solar Cell experiment. (RASCAL users can view the IV curves by clicking Options-->show IV curves.) + The spacecraft is operating in science mode, we have had one orbit in emergency mode, which was most probably due to a databus issue. + Amateur radio operators have sent over 40000 frames of data using RASCAL, the Delfi-C3 telemetry capture software. + The spacecraft has decided to consistently use the backup radio on 145.930 MHz for its telemetry downlink. The primary radio on 145.870 MHz may be switched on by the groundstation so monitor both frequencies. + We have successfully switched the spacecraft to its primary radio on 145.870MHz temporarily, after this switch, the satellite came back on the 145.930MHz downlink. Telemetry indicated that the primary radio on 145.870MHz is healthy and working fine so that is good news. Note that the satellite will normally transmit on 145.930MHz for the time being, unless we command her to go to 145.870MHz. + The team is working on the issue with the downlink TX switching off later into the sunlit side of the orbit, which is the reason why Delfi-C3 has not been heard on some passes. It may switch off when the computer does not receive data but the transmitter itself is OK. Hiroki Ashida at the Tokyo Institute of Technology reported on the status of their Cute-1.7 + APD II satellite. The team is monitoring an anomaly where the telemetry received via FM packet shows very low battery voltage while the CW telemetry reports a nominal reading. If this low voltage condition exists the satellite may be in danger. Further testing in the lab has duplicated this anomaly and the team has confirmed that the batteries are in good shape at this time. The Cute-1.7 team requests telemetry information from radio amateurs around the world. The satellite transmits its beacon at 437.275 MHz using CW Morse Code. The telemetry data in the beacon includes the battery voltage. Details are explained on their web-page: http://lss.mes.titech.ac.jp/ssp/cute1.7/cwtelemetry_e.html. The packet telemetry is only enabled when the satellite is over Japan. Masahiko Yamazaki,JQ1YGV at Nihon University reported that the SEEDS satellite is currently overcharging so the team has enabled the FM mode to transmit the DigiTalker and SSTV pictures on 437.485 MHz. At some point CanX-2 was generating some 1.8 A and CanX-6 was at 1.4 A. Good temperature on both. CanX-2 propulsion system is holding pressure. We are continuing with commissioning. Both satellites are currently transmitting on the Space Research 2.2 GHz downlink. The UHF transmitter on CanX-2 would only be active over the ground station in Toronto, Canada. Signal reports of the cubesats have been received from around the world. Here is a brief example captured from the amsat-bb ... Just heard great signals of Delfic3 on 145.930. - Rob PE1ITR Received good signals from DelfiC3 tonight in IO91TK 15km west of London. Nice to hear another satellite on 2m. May 4, 2008 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-124.02 The AO-16 Command Team investigated reports this week that the satellite had gone silent. The team is aware of the anomaly and there is no cause for alarm. Control Operator, Mark, N8MH said, "Over the last month AO-16 has gone from full illumination (0 minutes of eclipse) to over 250 minutes of eclipse. Since the bird has no fancy housekeeping code running, a reasonable explan- ation is that the battery voltage dropped low enough to put the bird into a protected (and silent) mode." Mark was able to command AO-16 ON during a pass over the USA. The satellite resumed operating in its 1200 BPSK digital MBL telemetry mode on the 437.026 MHz transmitter. After further testing, Mark reported, "A quick look at the telemetry suggests that AO-16 is doing fine. The current transmitter output power is about 1.5 Watts. AO-16 is again configured for voice mode and is open for normal operation." AO-16 has occasionally turned off on subsequent long eclipse periods. Mark explained, "At about 2043 utc on 2 May 2008 I commanded AO-16 back ON again. Apparently the increasing eclipse periods require another reduction in the transmitter output power. AO-16 is now back and operational in voice repeater mode, with a slightly reduced output. It is reporting around 1.2 watts output, so it was still quite loud." The increasing eclipse periods are too long to sustain operations at the previous transmitter output setting. The sustainable power budget is being managed empirically by Mark, with "best guess" settings using the satellite's telemetry for feedback on its performance. When AO-16 is silent the batteries continue to charge with minimal current being drawn to sustain the vital functions of the satellite (CPU). Thus, it is in a safe resting state at the moment, and the batteries continue to charge when in sunlight. Thanks to a brilliance in design, construction, and coding, the bird is hardy and excellent at self-preservation. AO-16 Uplink: 145.920 MHz FM AO-16 Downlink: 437.0260 MHz DSB (LSB and USB). After recovery of AO-16 on May 3, the current plans are to leave the satellite in the digital MBL mode for a few days so as to collect telemetry for review. You can hear the satellite "humming" in its 1200 BPSK mode. Interested listeners of AO-16 can help by copying any telemetry captured via the Warbler sound card demodulator. This software is from the same folks that brought you the RASCAL software for Delfi-C3. A file called "warbler.kss" is produced when packets are decoded. These "warbler.kss" files can be sent to N8MH for analysis. Please include your QTH (gridsquare) and the time the telemetry was captured. Telemetry from AO-16 in the MBL mode is random and infrequent. It's possible to hear no telemetry during an entire pass. Please do not transmit to AO-16 until further notice. AO-16 in digital MBL mode

Hello All, Around 2010utc on 3 May 2008 I commanded the AO-16 TX A back ON (437.026 MHz). The current power level is conservative, at around 700 millwatts as reported by the telemetry. (It's a bit harder to hear than when it was transmitting at 1.8 Watts!) Current plans are to leave the satellite in the digital MBL mode for a few days so as to collect telemetry for review. You can hear the satellite "humming" in its 1200 BPSK mode. Interested listeners of AO-16 can help by copying any telemetry captured via the Warbler sound card demodulator available at http://home.casema.nl/b.ubbels/Warbler.htm. This software is from the same folks that brought you the RASCAL software for Delfi-C3. A file called "warbler.kss" is produced when packets are decoded. These "warbler.kss" files can be sent to n8mh AT amsat DOT org for analysis. Please include your QTH (gridsquare) and the time the telemetry was captured. Telemetry from AO-16 in the MBL mode is random and infrequent. It's possible to hear no telemetry during an entire pass. Please do not transmit to AO-16 until further notice. AO-16 again silent, 1200utc 3 May 2008

Hello all, Mike Rupprecht DK3WN has reported no signal from AO-16 as of 1200UTC on 3 May 2008. Again, a reasonable explanation for AO-16 to cease transmitting is that the increasing eclipse periods are too long to sustain operations at the previous transmitter output setting. As you are witnessing, the sustainable power budget is being determined empirically by me, with "best guess" settings. We are in uncharted territory here, folks! When AO-16 is silent, as it is right now, the batteries continue to charge with minimal current being drawn to sustain the vital functions of the satellite (CPU). Thus, it is in a safe resting state at the moment, and the batteries continue to charge when in sunlight. Thanks to a brilliance in design, construction, and coding, the bird is hardy and excellent at self-preservation. Rest assured that I will investigate and get some telemetry from AO-16 as soon as my schedule, and the satellite's visibility at my QTH, cooperate. Perhaps that will be as soon as this afternoon; but it may be tomorrow. In the meantime, please do not transmit to AO-16 until further notice. Attempts to uplink to the satellite in voice mode compete and complicate my ability to command the bird. Your cooperation will be appreciated. Computer Controll for old Yaesu Rotators

All, I have an old Yaesu G-500A elevation rotator mated to a Yaesu G-800SDX and would like to use computer controll for both. They each have their own controller, but they do not have buit-in computer controll boards. Idiom ( http://www.idiompress.com/rotorcard.html ) makes a board for the G-800SDX, but I can't find anything for the G-500A. What would be the best inteface / boads to use with this set-up? The Yaesu GS-232 interface is a bit pricy and was wondering about an alternative. I use NOVA software for tracking. Thanks, Tony -K2MO

Hi Sion, I listened to the file, and it sounds fine. The only thing is that you were probably tuned slightly to high, giving a too low audio pitch (on USB mode that is) so that the carrier frequency is outside the capture range of RASCAL (1400-1800Hz). If you have a program that can make a waterfall display like spectran or MixW, you can try running that parallel to RASCAL and try centering the signal on 1600Hz, best is to do this during the transmission of AX.25 flags between the frames since these give discrete spectral lines spaced 150Hz and the strongest one is the carrier which should be around 1600Hz. RASCAL may sometimes gives false sync indications with strong signals since it then tries to lock onto one of the sidebands. hope that helps! 73 Wouter Jan Ubbels PE4WJ

VO52 questions....

I have been trying for a week to get into the VO52 satellite and have some questions... I can hear people talking and have to constantly manually tune them in in crazy patterns. One persons doppler will go up and another will go down. It is like I am chasing people that are constantly changing their transmit frequency and does not fit a normal doppler change. Another thing is that I cannot tune myself in at all. It is like I am transmitting in the wrong sideband. I am recieving the downlink in USB and it is my understanding that the uplink is supposed to be LSB. The program I am using is SatPC32 that CAT tunes an IC910H into a M2 2MCP14 - M2436CP30 both with right hand polarization. Just trying to get away from the FM Birds and try some new ones and looking for some help to figure out what I may be overlooking or doing wrong. AO-16 operational

Hello All, At about 2043utc on 2 May 2008 I commanded AO-16 back ON. Apparently the increasing eclipse periods require another reduction in the transmitter output power. AO-16 is now back and operational in voice repeater mode, with a slightly reduced output. It is reporting around 1.2 watts output, so it is still quite loud. AO-16 is again configured for voice mode and is open for normal operations: Uplink: 145.920 MHz FM Downlink: 437.0260 MHz DSB (LSB and USB). Users of AO-16 are encouraged to report any aberrant operations by either posting to the AMSAT-BB or by emailing the command team at n8mh AT amsat.org "Aberrant operations" might include the following: complete loss of signal from the spacecraft or significant change in the transmitter frequency. Hi All, Just thought I'd drop a note saying that between May 12 and 16, I will be in Pond Inlet, Baffin Island (Grid Square FQ12AQ). While I will be there on business, I will be bringing my TH-F6A, and will attempt to work AO-51 in my spare time. Unfortunately, I don't think I can get an arrow antenna or other hand-held beam in time, so I'll be stuck with a whip. Hi Rob & all, I can also confirm strong signals here in the UK (South Wales ) IO81EM. Latest pass at 0956 GMT - I was in a local shop and stepped outside to listen with my Kenwood THD7 and just using the helical antenna - Good strong signals even down to an elevation of about 10 degrees. Caused quite fuss when I explained to people that it was an amateur satellite -Hi Sorry no method of recording, wish I had taken my mobile phone! Regards & may the good work and results continue. AAUSAT-II and CANX-2

Dear All, Has anyone successfully copied CW telemetry from AAUSAT-II on 437.425 MHz and CANX-2 on 437.478 MHz? If so, could someone kindly point out what keps are they using for this 2 satellites? Right now, all my time is dedicated to Cute-1.7 + APDII, Seeds, Compass-1 and Delfi-C3. But I think I should not leave out both of them. Quick checks during Object J and E passes for AAUSAT-II and CANX-2 but I did not hear anything. Maybe I will pay more attention to them later. Also, I read somewhere that CANX-2 also transmits on 2407.650 MHz. Can someone confirm that this is operational too? 73, Sion Chow Q. C., 9W2QC.

Dear All, Below is a pass of Delfi-C3 and Seeds over West Malaysia. Time was 0958 Local or 0158 UTC, Maximum Elevation 21 degrees. Seeds was heard at first and then I moved to Delfi-C3 on 145.930 MHz. Good to hear Delfi-C3 transmitting again over West Malaysia. This is due to my PC and has nothing to do with the satellite. Throughout the transmission, CW sounded nicely via the IC-910H's internal speaker. Cute-1.7 very low elevation pass very good !

Today, May 1st, tirst opportunity in the evening was an only 1.0 (!) degrees elevation pass. Using the latest kepler sets, HamRadioDeluxe (automatic doppler correction) and the TS2000X, my 2x8 elements beam (no pre-amp) picked up the signal beautifully, all the way from AOS to LOS ! Sound bite: http://home.vianetworks.nl/users/hamoen/pa3guo/cute_17_01may08_1725utc_pa3g… Again: less then one degree elevation, no pre-amp, from a 100mW transmitter in space. Fantastic satellite ! Henk, PA3GUO ps: the 75 degrees pass later the evening, showed the kepler set was good also: I used a 500Hz CW filter, and HRD automatically tuned perfectly for doppler.

Hi Rob, Those are indeed very interesting results ! Here are is another analysis I did on the spin rate, today during a 17 degrees maximum elevation pass (19:00utc). Measurement started just before the max 17 degrees elevation moment. At the end of the pass the TX went off, then on, and then stayed off (see the white arrows in the picture). I extrapolated the envelope of the signal. With the latest kepler sets auto doppler correction worked perfect. DELFI-C3 rx report 2008-05-01

Hi, Today tracked 7 passes of delfic3 all with good signals. The transmitter on 145.930 is random on and off each pass but its always present. Tracking NORAD# 32787 matches AOS and LOS very well. Interesting was pass 4 and 5 with low elevation. Signals where good and I could decode some packets on pass 4. Received signals on pass 5 but decoded nothing because the tx switched on to late (just before LOS). I noticed in RASCAL a correlation between the distortion on the downlink system and the OBC System bus voltage value. When the voltage showed 7~8 volts the distortion was present.
