Fox in a Box Question

I had no problem replicating the Fox in a Box. My 3B+ runs around 70% CPU when decoding white noise. I am having trouble receiving the satellites because of the Spike in the center of the passband as well as images to the side. Is there anyway to compensate for the offset voltage in LINUX that will run on the P! 3B+? Programs like HDSDR allow you to do the correction within the program but I cannot find where to do it in Fox Telem. There is a Funcube control program for Windows but I have not found one for the PI. According to the Fauncube site, alignment is required every time you loose power to the PI. Also, I presume that the internet interface for the leader board is not supported? When I click on leaderboard, I get a message that it is not supported but when I acknowledge the pop up, the web brouser launches. It does not seem to have this problem when sending or receiving data to the server. Is this normal. I you would like to call me, my number is 847-514-8566. AO-73 Telemeter

I copied my first telemetry from FunCube 1 back in 2016 and copied it for several months, on and off. Then I got interested in other things and didn't copy it for a while. Now I am back and have an anomaly that I would like to have some advice on. For the last few months I have not been very successful in copying telemetry. I seem to be getting good signals with a M2 2MCP22 controlled in AZ and EL. I use an Icom IC-910H for the receiver. I could not get dashboard to reliably auto tune. I use HRD Satellite to tune the rig for doppler set to 145.935. If I set the rig to USB, I don't copy anything. So just playing around I tried CW and can hear the data but still not copy. Then I tried adjusting the RIT and I stated copying. I only adjusted the RIT -0.65. Should I go back to USB and adjust the frequency to find the signal? FoxTelem Program & RTL820T Dongles

After reading the manual from FoxTelem, I decided to thy the 192KHz wide suggestion they made ... the intent being to use SDR-Console/Satellite and the RTL820T Dongle. SDRC/Satellite is unable to auto-switch to the next in a list of Sats so making a bandwidth big enough to take in the lower end of one to the upper end of the others means, technically, 'set and forget' . I never did understand though where the Find-Sat "switch" was. I was hoping a strong signal somewhere in the bandwidth, which I could see was wide enough to cover the 4, would be enough to make the FoxTelem program seek out the Sat and decode it. I'd hoped to be able to activate the programs overnight and collect from 85 91 92 95 . It didn't work out. Though in testing, I could visually see the Telem/Signal come up. Tracking objects from the SSO-A launch

All, Separations between the objects from the SSO-A launch are remarkably small, some no more than 1 or 2 s. And not all TLE sets have been published yet. So identifying objects is hard for the time being. But for tracking purposes I have some suggestions. For JY1Sat use object 43759, for ITASat 1 use object 43760, for Fox 1Cliff use object 43767 and for Move 2 use object 43761. These should work well for now. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Collège Léonce Bourliaguet, Thiviers, France on 10 Dec. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:12 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and F5KEM. The contact should be audible over France and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Due to its geographical location, Thiviers has always had a commercial vocation, and the reputation of its agricultural products has largely contributed to its expansion. As a medieval fortified town, Thiviers was always coveted for its strategic position, Thiviers was even many times destroyed, the town has been rebuilt again and again with the passage of history. Thiviers is a place of pilgrimage on the way to Santiago de Compostela. In the middle of the 18th century, for more than 174 years, Thiviers was an important place for earthenware. The small dynamic town of about 3000 inhabitants is famous for its many fairs and markets, including the Goose and the Duck in winter. The fairs of Thiviers were already known in the 15th century. In 1962, the city organized the first award-winning fair in the Dordogne, allowing it to obtain a label for its greasy markets and to be proclaimed "Capital of Foie Gras in Périgord". Ensuring the natural transition between the Limousin in the North and the great province of Aquitaine in the South, Thiviers is a gateway to the South of the Regional Natural Park Perigord-Limousin. Its geographical position is remarkable, on the RN21. On the other hand, its rail passenger and goods traffic ensures a continuous and ever increasing activity towards major centers. Hi Selwyn, 4 of these satellites are using ham frequencies as far as I can tell. CHOMPTT is using 437.560 9k6 GMSK CubeSail is using 437.505 9k6 GMSK DaVinci is a bit more interseting with a 145.1 UpLink and 436.5 downlink with Data? and CW. ISX-SR1 is using 437.15 FSK (9k6 ?). NMTSat is using UHF 437? December 9, 2018 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-343.01 Fox-1Cliff/AO-95 Commissioning Status Following the launch of Fox-1Cliff/AO-95 AMSAT Engineering began the commissioning process, with the help of AMSAT Operations, on Tuesday December 4. Satellite telemetry indicates that the bird is healthy, and I thank all of the stations who have captured and relayed the telemetry that enabled us to monitor and determine the health of the various systems on board. Fox-1Cliff required an extended period monitoring battery and power levels due to the anomaly and fix that was applied back in February of 2016 during environmental testing, and the result of that is positive. However, during the next steps of commissioning we discovered an anomaly with her receive capability. After a few days of tests, analysis, and discussion, it appears that Fox-1Cliff/AO-95 will not be commissioned as our fourth Fox-1 amateur radio satellite. AMSAT Engineering will continue to evaluate and test Fox-1Cliff/AO- 95 for solutions to the anomaly and your continued help in providing telemetry is appreciated so that we can have data throughout her daily orbits rather than limited data over our U.S. stations. The data, analysis, and testing could lead to a positive solution but at the very least will be important to AMSAT's satellite programs in providing information that would help us and others, as we do freely share our successes and failures, to avoid similar situations with future missions. Following deployment, the space- craft was activated on schedule at 23:54:27 UTC. At approximately 00:30 UTC on December 4th, several stations in Brazil, including PS8MT, PT9BM, and PT2AP, reported hearing the voice beacon "Fox-1Cliff Safe Mode," confirming that the satellite was alive. Just before 00:40 UTC, AMSAT Fox-1 Team Member Burns Fisher, WB1FJ, was the first to submit telemetry to AMSAT servers. Initial telemetry values show the satellite to be in good health. Thanks to the 29 different stations that contributed telemetry during Fox-1Cliff's initial orbits. At press time this week over 130 stations have received telemetry and uploaded their data to AMSAT's servers. Telemetry helps us tremendously, starting ASAP after startup (~59 minutes after deployment*) and for the next 72-96 hours at least (for the life of the satellite is preferred!) as we look for successful startup, watch the general health and function as the satellite begins to acclimate to space, and start to perform the on orbit checkout. The first station to successfully receive and submit telemetry to the AMSAT server will receive a special 3D printed QSL card acknowledging their contribution. If you are capturing telemetry with FoxTelem, please be sure that "Upload to Server" is checked in your settings and your Ground Station Params are filled in as well. You can help AMSAT and everyone waiting to get on the air with Fox-1Cliff tremendously, by capturing Fox-1Cliff telemetry. Safe Mode/Beacon Mode Operation on Start Up ------------------------------------------- In the initial Safe Mode after startup, which we actually call Beacon Mode, the transmitter is limited to 10 seconds on time then does the two minutes off cycle. For those of you capturing telemetry, that means that you will only see Current frames and no High or Low frames because the High and Low are truncated as it takes just over 10 seconds to send two frames. You will hear Veronica announcing "Fox-1Cliff Safe Mode" while in Beacon Mode. We will likely leave the satellite in Beacon Mode for 24 hours to observe power telemetry. If we are seeing good readings from what you gather, when it comes over the U.S. for the first good pass after that holding period we will command it from Beacon Mode to normal Safe Mode. That puts Fox-1Cliff in full (still Safe Mode though) operation and transmits a full two frames of telemetry which is one Current frame followed by, and alternating each ID cycle, a High or a Low frame. On-Orbit Checklist Activities ----------------------------- We will begin the rest of the in orbit checklist activities at that time, and it is expected to take 7 to 10 days. Help your friends and all of our satellite ham friends get on the air and have fun sooner by being polite and patient! The in orbit checkout procedure is similar to Fox-1D and could be completed in as little as 7 days if we have the cooperation of the users. It is very important, not to mention just plain good Amateur Operating Practice, to refrain from using the transponder uplink so we can do the on orbit tests, including when we turn on transponder mode for testing. All operations from the Queen Mary will be as W6RO, the call sign for the wireless room on the ship operated by the Associated Radio Amateurs of Long Beach. Depending on staffing in the W6RO wireless room, there may also be HF activity during the satellite operation. Amateur radio has a long history on the Queen Mary, including a special-event station GB5QM that operated as the ship made its final voyage from England to Long Beach in 1967, and in almost 4 decades with the W6RO operations from Long Beach. Jerry Buxton, N0JY requests stations with large antennas listen for a possibly weak signal from the satellite. The telemetry downlink frequency is 145.900 MHz, and is transmitted as five short ASCII words in RTTY. You can use any RTTY software to receive the telemetry. Set the center frequency of RTTY to 2344. The RTTY is sent as 45.45 baud, 7-bit ASCII with one start bit, two stop bits and no parity. We recommend fldigi for receiving the telemetry on PCs. I'm Having trouble with installing Fox Telem. I get errors related to creating the directory structure and copying the files. However, the directory structure is there as are the files. I am running Windows 10 64 bit on an almost new HP PC. The program is in my Documents folder and I tried the root of C with the same result. Any help would be appreciated! 73 Greg W4GHW

Decoding the new AX.25 packet satellites

I have several raw IQ captures from last few days with the new satellites passing and am trying to decode the AX.25 packets from two of them. I'm using SDRSharp to reply them and pull the signals out using USB mode. I've already replayed them successfully and decoded both JY1-Sat and AO-95 using their respective software packages, but I'm having trouble figuring out ITASAT and MOVE-2. I'm using Virtual Audio Cable to loop back the audio and UZ7HO Sound modem in an attempt to decode them. For ITASAT, it's set to 1200 bps BPSK and for MOVE-2, I'm using the 9600 baud variant of BPSK Sound modem from his site. However, efforts have been fruitless to get it to resolve any packets. Any pointers for these satellites would be appreciated. 73s Loren K7IW

Dear All AMSAT members My name is Tanan Rangseeprom my callsign HS1JAN. I am project manager of JAISAT-1 satellite. I am very happy that Thailand, represented by King Mongkut's University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUT-NB), has successfully launched a Knacksat satellite from the SSO-A mission on December 3, 2018. The Knacksat team are very happy to learn that Mike Rupprechat, DK3WN had been the first person to receive the CW signal, however, after that satellite receive ground stations of KMUT-NB HS0AK and ground station of RAST HS0AJ and AMSAT HS members in Thailand have tried to receive the CW signal from the Knacksat satellite but we have not been able to receive any transmission at all. Hence, I am asking for help from all AMSAT members by asking them to please try to receive the CW signal and confirm this online at the following website: https://knacksat-26d23.firebaseapp.com/decoder When you provide a signal report online, the Knacksat team will have a very nice QSL card and gift to send in response to thank you for helping us by receiving our signal. In addition, in the future when the satellite is operational, the Knacksat team will be able to provide a packet radio uplink on VHF so that the satellite can respond count number to you with its callsign. So I would like to ask all AMSAT amateur radio operators to please help us in this and to please send any data back to us online website. Recalibrate Control Box

Dear All, Many thanks for all info on the APRS settings but nothing helps. The radio sends the beacon but does not receive any aprs info on the screen I can hear the packet sound loud and clear. Can it be that is has something to do with US or EU settings. Thanks for info and reply. Rudi / ON7CL

ESEO telemetry information now available

Hi all, ESA has updated the telemetry documentation for the ESEO satellite, available in https://www.esa.int/Education/ESEO/Be_the_first_to_catch_a_signal_from_ESEO This will help us Radio Amateurs to build a telemetry decoder for ESEO. Could you please assist us and gather telemetry packets from ESEO so that we can test our decoder? The beacon is at 437.000MHz and it is 4k8 or 9k6 FSK AX.25, so it can be received with any packet radio TNC, such as UZ7HO's soundmodem, direwolf, or similar. 73, Dani EA4GPZ.

Decoding the new AX.25 packet satellites

I have several raw IQ captures from last few days with the new satellites passing and am trying to decode the AX.25 packets from two of them. I'm using SDRSharp to reply them and pull the signals out using USB mode. I've already replayed them successfully and decoded both JY1-Sat and AO-95 using their respective software packages, but I'm having trouble figuring out ITASAT and MOVE-2. I'm using Virtual Audio Cable to loop back the audio and UZ7HO Sound modem in an attempt to decode them. For ITASAT, it's set to 1200 bps BPSK and for MOVE-2, I'm using the 9600 baud variant of BPSK Sound modem from his site. However, efforts have been fruitless to get it to resolve any packets. Any pointers for these satellites would be appreciated. 73s Loren K7IW

Any update on AO-85?

As per title. With my limited setup I am not able to decode any telemetry from AO-85 anymore. It still comes through the squelch on my rig+discone, but S/N ratio on my SDR+ArrowAlaska is about half what it normally was and with fading added there is no long enough sequence for decoding frames.

Frank, The BB list does not pass attachments or HTML, so you will need to provide a link. Fox-1Cliff was in Initial Mode, which is somewhat different from Safe Mode. No idea why this should cause a problem, however. Ashhar Farhan's bird is ExseedSat-1 and not Fox-1Cliff (AO-95). ExseedSat-1's downlink is on 145.900 MHz. You can use the Fox-1Cliff TLEs as both the sats were on the same pod during launch. As far as I know, no one has heard ExseedSat-1 beacon. 73, AB3DC Dinesh

Bob Bruninga reminded me that I was confusing the solution to two different problems. The squelch needs to be off in APRS and Packet modes in order for transmit (not receive) to function properly. Battery Saver mode should be off, otherwise APRS packet decoding is likely to suffer, and there are several mentions in the Kenwood documentation about this. Sorry for the mistake. Todd AL0I

Heard "Fox 1 Cliff Safemode" very strong (S9+20) on an overhead pass here in CM98. 18:45Z and again at 18:47Z and 18:49Z a minute before predicted LOS. I was using the elements from 2018-099A. Frequency seemed a tad high (maybe a khz) for where gPredict said the satellite was, so either a small offset in the actual frequency, or the satellite was a bit behind predicted. Greg KO6TH

Multiple Satellites successfully decoded from second pass

I was able to detect several satellites from the earlier pass and decode them. JY1-SAT was quite strong and I was able to successfully decode and upload 7 packets from it. No stats have appeared on the new warehouse for me yet, but I expect that it's in the queue somewhere and will eventually make it through. I used the RTL-SDR.com SDR dongle with SDRTouch on my Android phone to record the pass along with an Arrow II LEO Satellite antenna. By carefully centering my signal in the OSCAR Subband and recording full baseband, I was able to record several 2 meter satellite signals from one pass and decode them one at a time. I also decoded and uploaded one frame from Fox-1Cliff during the safe mode beacon. It was a little weaker and harder to pull out. The other satellite I heard during that pass was ITASAT which is advertised to transmit an AX.25 BPSK signal at 1200 bps. I'm less familiar with that setup, but I tried to get UZ7HO Soundmodem to decode it with no success. I was expecting to also hear ESEO on either 145.875 or the revised downlink frequency of 145.895 MHz, but no luck there. There was a weak signal of something a little below 145.875, but nothing I could make out. I also hopped over to 436.5 MHz to grab a couple of the beacons from Al Farabi 2 before the pass was over with success. I've save a copy of the raw IQ captures of the signals in case they might be useful for analysis. - Loren K7IW

FoxTelm Crashes coping Fox1 Cliff

My FoxTelm crashes when coping DUV from Fox 1 Cliff. Program is okay coping DUV until Veronica speaks and then it crashes. The program worked fine on AO85 pass after Fox 1 Cliff pass. Attached is a screenshot of the error message. The program has also worked fine on AO91 and AO92 in the past. Don’t know what’s different about Fox 1 Cliff. Any ideas? Thanks, Frank K6FW

EU#450 Heilbronn Das Robert-Mayer-Gymnasium (RMG) ist eines von fünf allgemeinbildenden Gymnasien in Heilbronn. Unsere Schule wird von ca. 700 Schülern besucht, welche von ungefähr 70 Lehrern unterrichtet werden. Unsere Schule wurde nach den Heilbronner Arzt und Physiker Robert Mayer benannt, der für die Veröffentlichung einer frühen Version der 1. Regel der Thermodynamik bekannt ist. Der naturwissenschaftliche Unterricht hat insbesondere in den Jahrgangsstufen 11 und 12 einen hohen Stellenwert. Viele unserer Schüler nehmen zusätzlich an naturwissenschaftlichen Wettbewerben teil und absolvieren ihre Abschlussprüfungen in diesem Bereich. Aber auch Informatik und Astronomie sind Teil unseres Curriculums; insbesondere das Thema ISS wird regelmäßig im Fach Naturwissenschaft und Technik (NWT), welches als Hauptfach belegt werden kann, behandelt. Unsere Schüler können aus einer Reihe von zusätzlichen, außerunterrichtlichen Aktivitäten, wie z.B. Jugend-forscht (ein naturwissenschaftlicher Wettbewerb für Jugendliche in Deutschland) oder "Mach MINT" (vergleichbar mit STEM) wählen. Schüler der Mittelstufe haben zusätzlich die Möglichkeit an einer Junior-Ingenieur-Akademie in Kooperation mit lokalen Unternehmen teilzunehmen, wodurch sie ein ganzes Schuljahr lang wertvolle Einblicke im Bereich Ingenieurswissenschaften erhalten. Als Ergänzung zum naturwissenschaftlichen Unterricht werden die vielseitigen Angebote der Experimenta, einer naturwissenschaftlich orientierten Lern- und Erlebniswelt in Heilbronn, genutzt. Im Ausstellungsbereich besteht die Möglichkeit auf spielerische Weise verschiedenste Aspekte und Bereiche der Naturwissenschaften zu begreifen. In gut ausgestatteten Laborräumen können den Unterricht ergänzende Experimente in den Bereichen Mikrobiologie, Chemie oder Physik durchgeführt werden. Das Robert-Mayer-Gymnasium besitzt außerdem eine gut ausgestattete Sternwarte, welche in enger Kooperation durch den Verein Robert-Mayer-Volks- und Schulsternwarte Heilbronn e.V. geleitet wird. Aufgrund der oben genannten Angebote wurde unserer Schule das MINT-EC-Zertifikat verliehen. MINT-EC ist ein nationales Exzellenz-Netzwerk für naturwissenschaftlich ausgerichtete Schulen. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt an unserer Schule stellt die Förderung hochbegabter Schüler dar. Seit dem Schuljahr 2005/2006 sind wir offiziell als Schule für hochbegabte Schüler in Baden-Württemberg anerkannt. Die Schüler in den sogenannten Hochbegabten-Klassen werden durch zusätzliche Projekte gefördert und absolvieren das Curriculum in kürzerer Zeit. Neben der Förderung in besonderen Klassen bietet unsere Schule auch ein seit langer Zeit etabliertes und erfolgreiches Programm für besonders begabte Schüler an, den sogenannten "Robert-Mayer-Talente-Pool". Innerhalb diese Programm können ausgewählte Schüler aus individuellen Angeboten in den Bereichen Naturwissenschaften und Sprachen wählen. Sie haben die Möglichkeit ein Frühstudium zu absolvieren, können an diversen Wettbewerben oder Ein-Tages-Exkursionen teilnehmen oder verschiedene Sprachzertifikate zu erwerben. Die Kombination von attraktiven Arbeitsplätzen in einer Urlaubsregion, lässt die Einwohnerzahlen im Schussental und der Umgebung stetig steigen. MINT-EC is the national excellence-network for science oriented schools. Another main focus of our school is the promotion of highly skilled students. Since 2005/2006 we are officially a school for highly skilled students in Baden-Wurttemberg. The students in these specific classes are promoted by additional projects and are allowed to study at a higher speed. Besides the promotion in special classes our school has a proven and tested program for talented students, the so-called 'Robert-Mayer-Talente-Pool'. There we are preparing an individual offer in the field of natural sciences and languages for selected students. They are able to be part of junior-studies, competitions, several day excursions and language certificates. This program makes sure, that we can reach students out of all social classes. In our school we also have a focus on modern foreign languages. Our students are taught in English, French and Italian and in Chinese in special offers. Every subject is connected with a student-exchange program and the acquirement of language certificates. Hello All, Please listen to Exseedsat RTTY telemetry on 145.900 FM and send reports to me directly. The telemetry downlink frequency is 145.900 MHz, and is transmitted as five short ASCII words in RTTY. You can use any RTTY software to receive the telemetry. Set the center frequency of RTTY to 2344. The RTTY is sent as 45.45 baud, 7-bit ASCII with one start bit, two stop bits and no parity. We recommend fldigi for receiving the telemetry on PCs. Yaesu G-5500 and Labjack Piggyback

I'm building a "piggyback" to go with my Labjack U3 and have a question about the output of the G-5500 DIN connector. As I understand the G-5500 manual, connecting certain pins to ground makes the rotator move in certain directions. What I measure is about 15Vdc on all of the "direction" pins relative to pin 8 which is ground. Do I have something wrong with my G-5500 controller box? (not my piggback board). thanks, Bob W7OTJ

Hello, today I was trying to see the full scale of the Elevation. For mistake instead to turn the FULL SCALE ADJ pot I have Turned the OUT VOLTAGE ADJ one. Now I am not sure if I have reset it to the right position. Please anybody can tell me how to see if it is positioned in the right position? Also if it is possible for the Elevation one. I would like also know if it is normal that when the rotator it is at 0 degrees And have to point up when I press the Up switch I notice that the needle Does not move straight but after a couple of seconds.
