yea, I have installed linux on an old laptop and could go into terminal and find a command line there.But I admit that I am currently in win 10. Fox satellites query

For the past 36 hours or so I have been unable to download any of the telemetry from the 3 Fox satellites,before then over the past 7 or 8 days I downloaded over 1000 frames. I am still receiving downloading data from other satellites and decoding, I fact downloaded and decoded about 750,000 bytes of data from the 2 CAS satellites this morning so I assume my system Is working ok. Matthes-Enderlein-Gymnasium Zwönitz Der Name der Schule ist "Matthes-Enderlein-Gymnasium, sie wurde 1975, in der damaligen DDR gegründet. Der Gründungsname war Friedrich-Engels Polytechnische Oberschule. Ab 1992 wurde sie als Gymnasium geführt. In den Jahren 2002 und 2003 wurde die Schule renoviert und 2008 kamen naturwissenschaftliche Räume und moderne Räume für Informationstechnologie dazu. Jetzt lernen 670 Schüler und lehren 60 Lehrer. Since then, for over 90 years, we have been consistently devoted to industrial education and developed as a general industrial high school with 5 departments (Architecture, Civil Engineering, Electrical, Information Technology and Mechanical). And we have amateur radio school club whose call sign is JA2YNI and we are learning much knowledge of science and engineering through various experiments. Our dear friend, Bill Tynan, put one of the earliest (perhaps the first?) FM stereo stations on the air as an experimental station. It’s call sign? W3XO. (The station originally licensed as W3XO later was licensed in regular FM broadcasting service as WGMS [Washington’s Good Music Station].) When the experimental station call sign block containing W3XO was transferred from experimental stations and became assignable to amateur stations, Bill applied for and was granted W3XO for his amateur station. Bill: you were one of a kind and we miss you dearly. Thanks for being a teacher, colleague, and friend for so many years. 73, art….. Gpredict question

Folks, I seek enlightenment on why I cannot seem to get Gpredict to track Fox-1a AKA AO85? N2YO's site tracks it, but Gpredict does not have it on its list. I run Linux, not Windows, BTW, which is the main reason I use Gpredict. If this is an unfixable bug, are there any other Linux satellite tracking programs for Linux that anyone would recommend? "Bill" Tynan, W3XO, SK It is with great sadness that AMSAT reports one of its founding directors and charter members, William A. (Bill) Tynan, W3XO, passed away peacefully at his home on Tierra Linda Ranch in Kerrville Texas, on August 7, 2018. He was 91. Bill was born October 12, 1926 in Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. But, throughout his adult, life, he left an indelible mark on Amateur Radio with a long list of "firsts" since becoming licensed as W3KMV in early 1946. Indeed, Bill was in the forefront of Amateur Radio's growth and importance in many ways. His singularly distinctive accomplishments to our Amateur Radio Service were, quite literally, "out of this world." His active Amateur Radio interest really began in the mid-30s when he was a young boy. During the Second World War, and after obtaining a Restricted Radio Telephone Permit, he operated in the War Emergency Radio Service (WERS), donating his time to the effort to the citizens of Montgomery County, Maryland and, later, to the District of Columbia by operating WERS systems on 2 1/2 meter VHF (then called UHF). Of course, this occurred during a time when all Amateur Radio activity had been suspended for the duration of the War. His wartime activity would later spark his interest in the frequencies above 30 MHz, and he became an active VHF/UHF enthusiast almost since obtaining his first Ham ticket. However, it was his work in helping others exploit the VHF/UHF spectrum that best characterized Bill's numerous accomplishments and contributions to Amateur Radio. For example, in early 1969, Bill attended the charter meeting in Washington, DC to investigate the feasibility of carrying on the work of Project OSCAR, a group of West Coast Hams that had built and launched the very first satellites carrying Amateur Radio. The meeting later led to the establishment of today's Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT). Bill was elected to the first Board of Directors of the new organization, and was later named Vice President for Operations. Bill performed yeoman service in this position during the OSCAR 6 era, principally because that particular satellite had a nasty habit of unexpectedly changing operating modes "on its own". Bill's superb efforts coordinated the work of dozens of worldwide command stations to keep OSCAR 6 (then the only OSCAR satellite in orbit) up and running for the world's Amateur Radio Operators to use. His outstanding work allowed critical Amateur Radio propagation and other experiments, as well as other, more routine communications, to continue virtually unabated. His singular efforts extended use of a critical, space-based experimental Amateur Radio resource that otherwise would have been given up for lost. Later, Bill's strong reputation for getting things done, and his expertise as a leading expert in the VHF/UHF arena, led to a request from the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) that he assume duties as Contributing Editor for QST Magazine's "World above 50 MHz" column. Under his superb guidance, and during the next 18 years, Bill kept the column both fresh and alive, while providing Hams worldwide with a powerful forum to advocate and nurture such new Amateur Radio technologies as long-haul VHF/UHF, moonbounce, DX and contest work, as well as emerging meteor scatter and satellite communications. However, while Bill Tynan's first love was VHF and UHF work, his heart and soul were always with AMSAT. Not surprisingly, it is with AMSAT that Bill's positive impacts on Ham Radio were destined to become some of his longest lasting contributions to our Service. For example, since his earliest days in AMSAT, Bill was intrigued with the possibility of Hams on the ground being able to talk to Hams in space. Later, in the mid-1970's, he actively explored the idea of Amateur Radio operation from aboard the Skylab space station while Owen Garriott, W5LFL, was to be a part of that crew. Unfortunately, NASA did not approve this proposal, stating that it was too late to modify the station to provide for an antenna. However, later, as the Shuttle program was beginning (and on behalf of AMSAT) Bill authored the very first draft proposal to allow Amateur Radio operation from the Space Shuttle. His idea was soon picked up by the ARRL, and it resulted in a formal, joint AMSAT/ARRL proposal to NASA to allow this activity. Needless to say, Bill's superb vision led directly to Owen Garriott's historic first use of Ham Radio from space during the STS-9 mission, thus marking the birth of the (then) very popular SAREX program. In 1986, Bill was again elected to the AMSAT Board of Directors, and, in 1991, just as the Phase 3D project (which later became AMSAT- OSCAR 40 on orbit) was beginning to gain momentum, Bill assumed duties as President of the organization at a most critical period in its history. As with his previous callings, Bill wasted no time in making his lasting mark on the organization. As one of his first efforts, he was instrumental in pulling a team of over two hundred volunteer people from 13 different countries together with the common goal of building and launching the largest, most complex, and most expensive Amateur Radio satellite ever attempted. When he finally stepped down from his post as AMSAT President in late 1998, his repeated, annual re-election to this high post made his one of the longest running terms as President in the organization's history. In addition to his solid accomplishments in furthering Amateur Radio, Bill remained a very active Radio Amateur. He was a life member of the ARRL, a life member of AMSAT (membership number 10), and was an active member of the Central States VHF Society, also serving on its Board of Directors. He was its President in 1992 and put on the organization's annual conference that year. Bill was also a member of the Quarter Century Wireless Association, the Radio Club of America, the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) as well as the National Space Society. Locally, he was the Program Chairman of the Hill Country Amateur Radio Club at his home on the Terra Linda Ranch in Kerrville, Texas and also served on the ranch's Cable TV advisory committee. During his lifetime, Bill also received several prestigious awards, including "The Ham of Year" in 1996 from the Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA) and in 2012, the Barry Goldwater Amateur Radio Award from the Radio Club of America. Bill is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Mattie LeNoir of Kilgore Texas, along with numerous cousins, brothers and sisters- in-law. No services will be held. However, his ashes will be scattered in two locations, the cemetery in Elgin, Texas where his wife will be interred and the cemetery in Hagersville, Ontario, Canada which is his mother's birthplace, and where his parents are buried. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to the charity of your choice. Statement of AMSAT President Joe Spier, K6WAO, on the passing of Bill Tynan, W3XO: I can only second the many comments and condolences that are coming in from around the world on the passing of Bill Tynan, W3XO. From the many remembrances of Bill's past accomplishments, it is clear that AMSAT and amateur radio has lost a dear friend. Friend is an important way to honor Bill. Bill was a friend to AMSAT, a friend to ARISS, a friend to the ARRL, a friend to amateur radio, a friend to his community, and lifelong friend to his dear wife, Mattie. Bill's friendship extended to me when I became AMSAT President. After hearing me present on some subject, I received a three page treatise from Bill on the proper use of the pronoun "me." His keen ear had picked up on my error, and the improvement came in a paper titled "What's the Matter with Me?" Bill had a way of looking at issues from a different perspective. Last October's Board of Directors meeting was in the middle of a "heated" discussion on the verbiage of a proposal, when Bill walked in and sat down. After another 15 minutes of discussion, further discussion on the proposal was tabled until the following day. Bill's comment after listening to all this was "Wow, sounds just like the board meetings we use to have 40 years ago!" Recently, Bill asked to step down as the AMSAT OSCAR Number Administrator. Bill has been granting applicants who qualify OSCAR numbers for over two decades, since the late-1990s. Even Bill could not remember the first number he issued, but he believed it was either TO-31 or SO-35. In any case, Bill had issued at least 57 OSCAR numbers. This is over 60%, or very close to two-thirds, of all the OSCAR numbers currently issued at this time. Bill liked to keep busy with his passion for amateur radio, whether this was working in the foreground or background. Only a few weeks ago, Bill proposed to AMSAT the use of FT-8 as a digital mode on a future satellite. My friend, Bill Tynan, W3XO, was always thinking ahead. Ad astra. The group had launched a BACAR (Balloon Carrying Amateur Radio) - a high altitude balloon with various radio equipment on-board to explore near-space. While waiting for the data to return from the BACAR package, the YOTA group operated from grid KG43 on multiple satellites, ranging from SO-50, AO-91, & AO-92. "All the YOTA ZS9 members, who made their first satellite contact will receive the AMSAT Satellite Communicators Club Award" said Bruce Paige, KK5DO, AMSAT Director, Contests & Awards. The second powerful earthquake in the area killed at least 98 people and seriously injured more than 200 others. The electricity supply in the area is disrupted and the ORARI of West Nusa Tenggara Region led by YB9KA and YB9GV have taken action to cover areas with no cellular coverage including taking battery supplies to affected repeaters. At the moment four repeaters are operating in the disaster area with ORARI HQ asking their Bali Island Region (the closest area) to provide further repeater support for use by emergency communications in Lombok. ORARI HQ has also issued an official request to the nearest region, to help with both logistics and personnel to Lombok, and designating a National Frequency for the Lombok Earthquake at 7.110 MHz for HF, VHF on 145.500 MHz Simplex and 147.000 MHz Duplex, and also to activate ORARI Satellite LAPAN IO-86 to assist with communication. The Central Java Region of the Indonesian Search And Rescue Council has sent a group of rescuers and vehicles, led by YB2QC the Operation and Technical Head of ORARI, to join the National Rescue Operation in Lombok and ORARI. Jakarta is also arranging the delivery of logistical assistance to Lombok. (ANS thanks the IARU Region 1 and Dani, YB2TJV for the above information.) --------------------------------------------------------------------- BIRDS-2 Transmit Plans Announced JAXA's three BIRDS-2 satellites, BHUTAN-1, MAYA-1 and UiTMSat-1 are scheduled for deployment from the ISS on August 10, 2018. All three CubeSats of BIRDS-2 project will be operating with same uplink and downlink frequency. Each CubeSat will transmit a CW beacon at 437.375 MHz. Telemetry and mission downlink will use the same frequency but only upon a successful uplink command. Each CubeSat also has an APRS digipeater on 145.825 MHz. Since the CubeSats will be released at the same time from the ISS, there is a possibility that the beacons from three CubeSats will interfere with each other, making it difficult to decode. To avoid that, one of the measures adopted by the team is as described below. The CubeSats will be released together, which means they will turn on almost at the same time. Once turned on, one of the first things they do is start transmission of beacon to indicate it is alive. But the CubeSats are programmed in such a way that each of them waits for a different amount of time before the beacon starts. The first satellite coming out will be BHUTAN-1 and will be the first to start transmission. It will then of beacon and it will remain silent long enough to let other two satellites finish their beacon transmissions. The initial beacon signal period is set as 115 sec (30 sec transmission and 85 sec silent time). This is a temporary schedule for the initial operation phase. Fox-1 Cliff will be among the satellites aboard this launch. Spaceflight has contracted with more than 70 spacecraft from approximately 35 different organizations, to launch from a SpaceX Falcon 9 later this year. The mission, named SSO-A: SmallSat Express represents the company's purchase of an entire Falcon 9 to accommodate the growing number of domestic, international, government and commercial customers seeking affordable rideshare options to launch their spacecraft into orbit. SSO-A, which signifies the company's first dedicated rideshare mission to a Sun-Synchronous Low Earth Orbit, is slated to launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base. It includes 15 microsats and 56 cubesats from commercial and government entities, of which more than 30 are from international organizations from 18 countries including United States, Australia, Italy, Netherlands, Finland, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, UK, Germany, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Poland, Canada, South Africa, Brazil, and India. Planet is sending two SkySat small sats, the primary spacecraft on the launch, along with several Dove cubesats. They are also sponsoring the launch of two cubesats: one from Georgia Institute of Technology and one from University of Colorado Boulder Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. Among the spacecraft onboard, 23 are from universities, 19 are imaging satellites, 23 are technology demonstrations, two are art exhibits, and one is from a high school. Seventy-five percent are commercial spacecraft. [ANS thanks Spaceflight for the above information] --------------------------------------------------------------------- NASA Assigns Crews to First Test Flights, Missions on Commercial Spacecraft NASA introduced to the world on Friday the first U.S. astronauts who will fly on American-made, commercial spacecraft to and from the International Space Station - an endeavor that will return astronaut launches to U.S. soil for the first time since the space shuttle's retirement in 2011. "Today, our country's dreams of greater achievements in space are within our grasp," said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. "This accomplished group of American astronauts, flying on new spacecraft developed by our commercial partners Boeing and SpaceX, will launch a new era of human spaceflight. Today's announcement advances our great American vision and strengthens the nation's leadership in space." The agency assigned nine astronauts to crew the first test flight and mission of both Boeing's CST-100 Starliner and SpaceX's Crew Dragon. NASA has worked closely with the companies throughout design, development and testing to ensure the systems meet NASA's safety and performance requirements. "The men and women we assign to these first flights are at the forefront of this exciting new time for human spaceflight," said Mark Geyer, director of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. "It will be thrilling to see our astronauts lift off from American soil, and we can't wait to see them aboard the International Space Station." Additional crew members will be assigned by NASA's international partners at a later date. The last transmissions from LongJiang 2 were on 2018-08-05 from 00:30 to 02:30 UTC and from 07:30 to 09:30 UTC on 435.400 MHz and 436.400 MHz. Various experiments are being carried out with GMSK and JT4G downlink signals. Stations with 'normal' amateur equipment can receive the downlinks quite well. Downlink signals have even been received with no more than an Arrow antenna, no preamp. DK5LA was the first to have his signals relayed through LongJiang 2 on 2018-07-15. My apologies to all that were tuned into the SO-50 pass down the West Coast this morning at 16:17 zulu. I kepr throwing my call out there not realizing I was tuned to the incorrect downlink frequency until halfway through the pass. I finally checked the tuning on my receive HT, corrected it and KB6LTY came back to me right away. In addition to a few other QSOs, I believe I heard W7QL and another station K7 **Q toward the end of the pass. Please excuse this operator's error.... DOH! 73, Bob, N6REK

"Bill" Tynan, W3XO, SK It is with great sadness that AMSAT reports one of its founding directors and charter members, William A. (Bill) Tynan, W3XO, passed away peacefully at his home on Tierra Linda Ranch in Kerrville Texas, on August 7, 2018. He was 91. Bill was born October 12, 1926 in Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. But, throughout his adult, life, he left an indelible mark on Amateur Radio with a long list of "firsts" since becoming licensed as W3KMV in early 1946. Indeed, Bill was in the forefront of Amateur Radio's growth and importance in many ways. His singularly distinctive accomplishments to our Amateur Radio Service were, quite literally, "out of this world." His active Amateur Radio interest really began in the mid-30s when he was a young boy. During the Second World War, and after obtaining a Restricted Radio Telephone Permit, he operated in the War Emergency Radio Service (WERS), donating his time to the effort to the citizens of Montgomery County, Maryland and, later, to the District of Columbia by operating WERS systems on 2 1/2 meter VHF (then called UHF). Of course, this occurred during a time when all Amateur Radio activity had been suspended for the duration of the War. His wartime activity would later spark his interest in the frequencies above 30 MHz, and he became an active VHF/UHF enthusiast almost since obtaining his first Ham ticket. However, it was his work in helping others exploit the VHF/UHF spectrum that best characterized Bill's numerous accomplishments and contributions to Amateur Radio. For example, in early 1969, Bill attended the charter meeting in Washington, DC to investigate the feasibility of carrying on the work of Project OSCAR, a group of West Coast Hams that had built and launched the very first satellites carrying Amateur Radio. The meeting later led to the establishment of today's Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT). Bill was elected to the first Board of Directors of the new organization, and was later named Vice President for Operations. Bill performed yeoman service in this position during the OSCAR 6 era, principally because that particular satellite had a nasty habit of unexpectedly changing operating modes "on its own". Bill's superb efforts coordinated the work of dozens of worldwide command stations to keep OSCAR 6 (then the only OSCAR satellite in orbit) up and running for the world's Amateur Radio Operators to use. His outstanding work allowed critical Amateur Radio propagation and other experiments, as well as other, more routine communications, to continue virtually unabated. His singular efforts extended use of a critical, space-based experimental Amateur Radio resource that otherwise would have been given up for lost. Later, Bill's strong reputation for getting things done, and his expertise as a leading expert in the VHF/UHF arena, led to a request from the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) that he assume duties as Contributing Editor for QST Magazine's "World above 50 MHz" column. Under his superb guidance, and during the next 18 years, Bill kept the column both fresh and alive, while providing Hams worldwide with a powerful forum to advocate and nurture such new Amateur Radio technologies as long-haul VHF/UHF, moonbounce, DX and contest work, as well as emerging meteor scatter and satellite communications. However, while Bill Tynan's first love was VHF and UHF work, his heart and soul were always with AMSAT. Not surprisingly, it is with AMSAT that Bill's positive impacts on Ham Radio were destined to become some of his longest lasting contributions to our Service. For example, since his earliest days in AMSAT, Bill was intrigued with the possibility of Hams on the ground being able to talk to Hams in space. Later, in the mid-1970's, he actively explored the idea of Amateur Radio operation from aboard the Skylab space station while Owen Garriott, W5LFL, was to be a part of that crew. Unfortunately, NASA did not approve this proposal, stating that it was too late to modify the station to provide for an antenna. However, later, as the Shuttle program was beginning (and on behalf of AMSAT) Bill authored the very first draft proposal to allow Amateur Radio operation from the Space Shuttle. His idea was soon picked up by the ARRL, and it resulted in a formal, joint AMSAT/ARRL proposal to NASA to allow this activity. Needless to say, Bill's superb vision led directly to Owen Garriott's historic first use of Ham Radio from space during the STS-9 mission, thus marking the birth of the (then) very popular SAREX program. In 1986, Bill was again elected to the AMSAT Board of Directors, and, in 1991, just as the Phase 3D project (which later became AMSAT- OSCAR 40 on orbit) was beginning to gain momentum, Bill assumed duties as President of the organization at a most critical period in its history. As with his previous callings, Bill wasted no time in making his lasting mark on the organization. As one of his first efforts, he was instrumental in pulling a team of over two hundred volunteer people from 13 different countries together with the common goal of building and launching the largest, most complex, and most expensive Amateur Radio satellite ever attempted. When he finally stepped down from his post as AMSAT President in late 1998, his repeated, annual re-election to this high post made his one of the longest running terms as President in the organization's history. In addition to his solid accomplishments in furthering Amateur Radio, Bill remained a very active Radio Amateur. He was a life member of the ARRL, a life member of AMSAT (membership number 10), and was an active member of the Central States VHF Society, also serving on its Board of Directors. He was its President in 1992 and put on the organization's annual conference that year. Bill was also a member of the Quarter Century Wireless Association, the Radio Club of America, the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) as well as the National Space Society. Locally, he was the Program Chairman of the Hill Country Amateur Radio Club at his home on the Terra Linda Ranch in Kerrville, Texas and also served on the ranch's Cable TV advisory committee. During his lifetime, Bill also received several prestigious awards, including "The Ham of Year" in 1996 from the Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA) and in 2012, the Barry Goldwater Amateur Radio Award from the Radio Club of America. Bill is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Mattie LeNoir of Kilgore Texas, along with numerous cousins, brothers and sisters- in-law. No services will be held. However, his ashes will be scattered in two locations, the cemetery in Elgin, Texas where his wife will be interred and the cemetery in Hagersville, Ontario, Canada which is his mother's birthplace, and where his parents are buried. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to the charity of your choice. Statement of AMSAT President Joe Spier, K6WAO, on the passing of Bill Tynan, W3XO: I can only second the many comments and condolences that are coming in from around the world on the passing of Bill Tynan, W3XO. From the many remembrances of Bill's past accomplishments, it is clear that AMSAT and amateur radio has lost a dear friend. Friend is an important way to honor Bill. Bill was a friend to AMSAT, a friend to ARISS, a friend to the ARRL, a friend to amateur radio, a friend to his community, and lifelong friend to his dear wife, Mattie. Bill's friendship extended to me when I became AMSAT President. After hearing me present on some subject, I received a three page treatise from Bill on the proper use of the pronoun "me." His keen ear had picked up on my error, and the improvement came in a paper titled "What's the Matter with Me?" Bill had a way of looking at issues from a different perspective. Last October's Board of Directors meeting was in the middle of a "heated" discussion on the verbiage of a proposal, when Bill walked in and sat down. After another 15 minutes of discussion, further discussion on the proposal was tabled until the following day. "Bill" Tynan, W3XO, SK It is with great sadness that AMSAT reports one of its founding directors and charter members, William A. (Bill) Tynan, W3XO, passed away peacefully at his home on Tierra Linda Ranch in Kerrville Texas, on August 7, 2018. He was 91. Bill was born October 12, 1926 in Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. But, throughout his adult, life, he left an indelible mark on Amateur Radio with a long list of "firsts" since becoming licensed as W3KMV in early 1946. Indeed, Bill was in the forefront of Amateur Radio's growth and importance in many ways. His singularly distinctive accomplishments to our Amateur Radio Service were, quite literally, "out of this world." His active Amateur Radio interest really began in the mid-30s when he was a young boy. During the Second World War, and after obtaining a Restricted Radio Telephone Permit, he operated in the War Emergency Radio Service (WERS), donating his time to the effort to the citizens of Montgomery County, Maryland and, later, to the District of Columbia by operating WERS systems on 2 1/2 meter VHF (then called UHF). Of course, this occurred during a time when all Amateur Radio activity had been suspended for the duration of the War. His wartime activity would later spark his interest in the frequencies above 30 MHz, and he became an active VHF/UHF enthusiast almost since obtaining his first Ham ticket. However, it was his work in helping others exploit the VHF/UHF spectrum that best characterized Bill's numerous accomplishments and contributions to Amateur Radio. For example, in early 1969, Bill attended the charter meeting in Washington, DC to investigate the feasibility of carrying on the work of Project OSCAR, a group of West Coast Hams that had built and launched the very first satellites carrying Amateur Radio. The meeting later led to the establishment of today's Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT). Bill was elected to the first Board of Directors of the new organization, and was later named Vice President for Operations. Bill performed yeoman service in this position during the OSCAR 6 era, principally because that particular satellite had a nasty habit of unexpectedly changing operating modes "on its own". Bill's superb efforts coordinated the work of dozens of worldwide command stations to keep OSCAR 6 (then the only OSCAR satellite in orbit) up and running for the world's Amateur Radio Operators to use. His outstanding work allowed critical Amateur Radio propagation and other experiments, as well as other, more routine communications, to continue virtually unabated. His singular efforts extended use of a critical, space-based experimental Amateur Radio resource that otherwise would have been given up for lost. Later, Bill's strong reputation for getting things done, and his expertise as a leading expert in the VHF/UHF arena, led to a request from the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) that he assume duties as Contributing Editor for QST Magazine's "World above 50 MHz" column. Under his superb guidance, and during the next 18 years, Bill kept the column both fresh and alive, while providing Hams worldwide with a powerful forum to advocate and nurture such new Amateur Radio technologies as long-haul VHF/UHF, moonbounce, DX and contest work, as well as emerging meteor scatter and satellite communications. However, while Bill Tynan's first love was VHF and UHF work, his heart and soul were always with AMSAT. Not surprisingly, it is with AMSAT that Bill's positive impacts on Ham Radio were destined to become some of his longest lasting contributions to our Service. For example, since his earliest days in AMSAT, Bill was intrigued with the possibility of Hams on the ground being able to talk to Hams in space. Later, in the mid-1970's, he actively explored the idea of Amateur Radio operation from aboard the Skylab space station while Owen Garriott, W5LFL, was to be a part of that crew. Unfortunately, NASA did not approve this proposal, stating that it was too late to modify the station to provide for an antenna. However, later, as the Shuttle program was beginning (and on behalf of AMSAT) Bill authored the very first draft proposal to allow Amateur Radio operation from the Space Shuttle. His idea was soon picked up by the ARRL, and it resulted in a formal, joint AMSAT/ARRL proposal to NASA to allow this activity. Needless to say, Bill's superb vision led directly to Owen Garriott's historic first use of Ham Radio from space during the STS-9 mission, thus marking the birth of the (then) very popular SAREX program. In 1986, Bill was again elected to the AMSAT Board of Directors, and, in 1991, just as the Phase 3D project (which later became AMSAT- OSCAR 40 on orbit) was beginning to gain momentum, Bill assumed duties as President of the organization at a most critical period in its history. As with his previous callings, Bill wasted no time in making his lasting mark on the organization. As one of his first efforts, he was instrumental in pulling a team of over two hundred volunteer people from 13 different countries together with the common goal of building and launching the largest, most complex, and most expensive Amateur Radio satellite ever attempted. When he finally stepped down from his post as AMSAT President in late 1998, his repeated, annual re-election to this high post made his one of the longest running terms as President in the organization's history. In addition to his solid accomplishments in furthering Amateur Radio, Bill remained a very active Radio Amateur. He was a life member of the ARRL, a life member of AMSAT (membership number 10), and was an active member of the Central States VHF Society, also serving on its Board of Directors. He was its President in 1992 and put on the organization's annual conference that year. Bill was also a member of the Quarter Century Wireless Association, the Radio Club of America, the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) as well as the National Space Society. Locally, he was the Program Chairman of the Hill Country Amateur Radio Club at his home on the Terra Linda Ranch in Kerrville, Texas and also served on the ranch's Cable TV advisory committee. During his lifetime, Bill also received several prestigious awards, including "The Ham of Year" in 1996 from the Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA) and in 2012, the Barry Goldwater Amateur Radio Award from the Radio Club of America. Bill is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Mattie LeNoir of Kilgore Texas, along with numerous cousins, brothers and sisters- in-law. No services will be held. However, his ashes will be scattered in two locations, the cemetery in Elgin, Texas where his wife will be interred and the cemetery in Hagersville, Ontario, Canada which is his mother's birthplace, and where his parents are buried. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to the charity of your choice. Hi everyone. With no shortage of nervousness I’m planning a trip to Virginia’s Eastern Shore to attempt some passes from FM-27 this Saturday, Aug. 11th. I’ll plan to beacon APRS as K4KDR-9 from an IOS cell phone app throughout the day and if I happen to send out any Tweets, my ID on Twitter is @scott23192. My only remote operating experience was the first #WMPLOTA, so keep expectations low. Yes, I should have practiced more since then, but it’s hard to talk myself out of the air-conditioning this time of year. If FM-27 is a grid that anyone needs, I hope that I can work you on Saturday. Here are the passes that I’ll be shooting for: (all times UTC) 18:57 FOX-1A 19:52 CAS-4A 20:24 CAS-4B 20:38 FOX-1A ... and the next one is only a “maybe”. After we’re done with a meteor-watching event up at Wallops Island & are heading home, there’s a high pass of AO-92 at: 2018-08-12 02:07 FOX-1D ... so, if that one works out it might be half-duplex from the HT. Of course everything will go into LoTW. We’ve been dealing with very isolated, but strong storms around here this week and that’s predicted to continue into Saturday. JAXA announced BIRDS-2 three CubeSats BHUTAN-1, MAYA-1 and UiTMSat-1 deploy from ISS at 10th August. They will transmit 30 minutes after deployment. Initial mode looks CW on 70cm. They use same frequency 437.375MHz and transmit in the order of BHUTAN-1, MAYA-1 and UiTMSat-1. BIRDS-2 CubeSats has also APRS digipeater on 145.825MHz. So I'm putting out a call for other sat ops who might be attending Shelby and want to help out, by doing demos and/or manning a table. It depends on the level of interest of those attending/participating as to what might take place. (I certainly don't want to man an info table at that size hamfest all day by myself, so I hardly expect anyone else to either :-) .) So email me, and I'll start an email chain for those interested in participating, and we'll see what kind of activities we can reasonably do at Shelby to get the word out about the wonderful world of working the "birds" and AMSAT! Yes..., But I was thinking on something more visual, such as a calendar with a bar diagram covering all days of the activation. Something similar to the calendar of the Outlook. Each activaron a bar. And clearly seeing the call sign and grid. Even we could filter by FM SAT, SSB SATs or both. With a nice tool and a simple sight with colours more people will use it and it will be really a meeting-point for all of us. And even each person could configure its own filters, perhaps only activations with couverture USA-EU. Imagination takes lead! Mounting Coax feed lines to Az/El rotator

Hey all, Nearly one year ago I installed two cross-yagis on a Hummel Teletower with a YAESU G5400B rotator system. I have made a lot of thoughts on how to "wind" the coaxial feed lines around both: the azimuth and also the elevation axis. With elevation I am very fine, but maybe this is just a matter of time as it seems to be with azimuth! Some days ago I found some flipping faint/strong signals on my SatNOGS station (https://network.satnogs.org/stations/37/) in the 2m band. First I thought this could be some kind of frontend-overloading with the RF amplifier, but it turned out: this is not! Today I ran some tests while driving the antenna with my YAESU FT-847 at minimum output power (around 1.5W). I could see that with elevation rotation everything is fine from 0° to 180° el. Then I tried to turn the azimuth and - guess what? - SWR "jumps" at around 270° from 1.1 to >4! That truely indicates a broken cable. As I installed that wires, I made a short connection of flexible coax cable (HIGHFLEXX 7) from the phasing line box, down the mast and made a connection to ECOFLEX 15 running into the shack. The flexible lines are "wrapped" around the azimuth pipe with a radius of around 30cm. I am not sure, but it could be broken just on top of the N-connector... Do I need to somehow support that short piece of wrapped line? Any hints on how to mount the cables to prevent this are really appreciated! Kind regards, Patrick, DL4PD

I think AMSAT needs a meeting-point on his web where whatever ham can spot its portable/event activation, so will not need to subscribe to several webs, forums, whatsapp groups and twitter. Decoding the data from the XW satellites

I can receive them perfectly, but what software do I need to decode the data and importantly what settings should I use in the software . Si far I have tried HS_sound modem without any sucess. SatPC32 Rotor Control Question

I'm using a G5400B for portable operation and controlling things with SatPC32. The rotor interface is an older FoxDelta serial port version which is using the EasyComm protocol. Terrestrial Data Transmission & 38K4 Baud satellite

Guys, hope in an help. I have mounted the 38k4 Baud into my Kenwood TS-2000X.It has been mounted from the technical that make the 38k4 baud board. When I saw the radio after the modifications I have noticed that, he has used for the RX and TX connections the ACC2 Connector. Now I have two ACC cables that I have to keep plugging and unplugging. I mean when I have to do Terrestrial data communications like RTTY BPSK Packet etc. I have to use the old ACC2 cable, When I have to use the 38k4 I have to use the new one. Anybody can suggest me a way to avoid to plug and unplug the cables when necessary? When the packet module aboard ISS died in late 2017, the ARISS hardware team was heavily involved in design and safety certification of the new Interoperable Radio System (IORS). After basic troubleshooting and a few attempts to revive the failed module, we decided to dedicate our time to IORS and get it - with its packet and other capabilities - aboard ISS as soon as possible. Early this year, thermal testing of the first flight-identical IORS power supply showed that some changes to air flow were needed. This change looked likely to delay our expected IORS deployment from late 2018 to early 2019. With some newly available time, the hardware team was able to dig up an original duplicate of the packet module, replace its battery, and test the module to verify that it still works. Fortunately, NASA has approved flight of this identical unit with minimal paperwork, so we are asking to be on the manifest for supply mission 71P (a Progress spacecraft). Launch currently is scheduled for 31 October, with docking on 2 November. [ANS thanks AMSAT for the above information] --------------------------------------------------------------------- AMSAT Member Ruth Willet, KM4LAO Receives 2018 ARRL Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Award Nineteen-year-old Ruth Willet, KM4LAO, of Cana, Virginia, was named as the recipient of the 2018 ARRL Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Award by the ARRL Board of Directors at its July 20 – 21 meeting. The Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Award is given annually by the Board to a radio amateur under the age of 21 whose accomplishments and contributions to both Amateur Radio and the local community are of an exemplary nature. Willet, who earned her Technician class license in June 2015 and upgraded to Extra in May 2016, was instrumental in re-establishing the Amateur Radio and Electronics Club (K8HPS) at Kettering University in Michigan, where she is a junior pursuing a double major in engineering physics and mechanical engineering while maintaining an A average. She alternates 11-week academic terms with 11-week co- op jobs at Textron Specialized Vehicles in Augusta, Georgia. Willet recently relocated to Virginia from Lawrenceville, Georgia, where she grew up. Willet is actively involved in recruiting and mentoring new licensees and in community awareness programs, including demonstrations during the August 21, 2017, total solar eclipse. She is on the air daily on HF, using SSB or CW and satellites. In addition to her membership in ARRL, Willet belongs to AMSAT and CWOps, as well as several other clubs. She enjoys HF contesting, participating in local club events, and chasing and roving to grids on Amateur Radio satellites. Willet and her mom Sharon, KM4TVU, participated in ARRL’s highly successful National Parks on the Air (NPOTA) event in 2016. AO-85 hard of hearing?

I have attempted to make the last two passes of AO-85 over the West Coast, 8/3/2018 at 01:12 zulu on 8/03/18 and on 08/03/18 at 15:22 zulu. I could hear a number of stations but it seemed that the bird was having a hard time hearing me. I am running 2 HTs at 5 W transmit full duplex into an Arrow II hand held satellite antenna. I had no problem hitting AO-92 at 18:19 today. Thanks for your help. 73, Bob, N6REK

LongJiang 2 transmissions from lunar orbit

All, While many are preparing for the first Phase 4 amateur payload in a geostationary satellite, the first Phase 5 amateur payload is already operational in an elliptical orbit around the Moon. The next transmissions from LongJiang 2 will be on 2018-08-05 from 00:30 to 02:30 UTC and from 07:30 to 09:30 UTC on 435.400 MHz and 436.400 MHz. Various experiments are being carried out with GMSK and JT4G downlink signals. Stations with 'normal' amateur equipment can receive the downlinks quite well. Downlink signals have even been received with no more than an Arrow antenna, no preamp. DK5LA was the first to have his signals relayed through LongJiang 2 on 2018-07-15. Today the first picture of an onboard camera was downlinked with SSDV. The next SSDV test will be tomorrow. Other experiments will follow later. Why not give LongJiang 2 a try? 73, Nico PA0DLO

Paul: For portable use (carried by a vehicle), I use the Go-Vertical USA tripod adaptor. You can use any of the various aluminum surplus GI masts for the legs (I use 6 on the legs, 2 each side) That will hold a small Yagi-UDa at up to 25 on a low wind day with no guys. I use the smooth mast sections only for the vertical risers, and 1.75" mast clamps for guys for taller sections, up to 50 ft high. up to 35' is easy with one person; over that height, you start to need help. My 12 year old flip-phone went SK on me. I wanted another flip phone but they told me they would have to special order one. HA, so now I have an android smart phone. still trying to learn it. Just wondering, what apps are the favorites out there? Saw heavens above, Some PSK, SSTV, and RTTY apps. A neat looking audio spectrum analyzer app. Has anyone hooked up an SDR receiver to a smart phone? I've read the instructions, but the only labels I can print show date, time, mode, one band and no mention of a satellite. Very frustrating. Are there customizing options I've missed? -- Mark D. I'm looking for a portable antenna mast that I can use between passes while satellite roving. I would like it to be able to go to at least 20', hold a 5 element M2 6 Meter yagi, be able to fit in a small truck and be portable. I have looked at numerous military surplus masts, like at Go-vertical-usa, but they will not return any of my correspondence. I have looked into many "home brew" solutions, but I'm just not that handy. Anyone have any good sites I can go to for something that fits my needs? Thanks in advance for your help! FT-991A Transmit Interference

Hi AMSAT friends, I'm having a technical problem and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I've been experimenting with using an FT-991A transmitter and SDR receiver to run full-duplex on the satellites. My problem is as soon as I key the FT-991A transmitter, my SDR receiver waterfall goes completely white and I don't hear anything but static. Classic overload symptoms. I've tried several things: - Upgrading my receiver from an RTL-SDR to an SDRplay RSP1A: no improvement. - Adding a duplexer as a band pass filter: no improvement. - Transmitting with a vertical antenna about 40' away from my yagis: YES it did solve the problem but is not a suitable solution. I'm using the same yagi antenna setup that I've used successfully for years with an FT-847, and have also had the same problem with a handheld Arrow. At last I tried transmitting with a different radio, and the problem disappears. I figured the problem was in my FT-991A so I sent it for warranty repair, but just got the call that they can't find anything wrong with it. It has no measurable spurious or out of band emissions. I'm at a loss here... I know people are using the same equipment (FT-991 + SDRplay) successfully; Simon Brown comes to mind. Dear All, We have a bunch of active satellite operators in the region, mainly from Mauritius (3B8), Reunion (FR) and South Africa (ZS) also from Madagascar 5R8 sometimes , in spite many countries reachable particularly on FO-29 we do not hear much traffic except for regular QSO with Thailand (thanks to Kob, E21EJC). I guess the active guys reachable around the Indian Ocean (West Africa, Middle-East, Asia and Oceania) are not looking this way as not expecting any trafic and also due to time difference. Return of ARISS packet radio

If you have missed APRS and packet radio from ISS (as ARISS has), you'll be happy to hear that a replacement system is on its way. When the packet module aboard ISS died in late 2017, the ARISS hardware team was heavily involved in design and safety certification of the new Interoperable Radio System (IORS). After basic troubleshooting and a few attempts to revive the failed module, we decided to dedicate our time to IORS and get it - with its packet and other capabilities - aboard ISS as soon as possible. Early this year, thermal testing of the first flight-identical IORS power supply showed that some changes to air flow were needed. This change looked likely to delay our expected IORS deployment from late 2018 to early 2019. With some newly available time, the hardware team was able to dig up an original duplicate of the packet module, replace its battery, and test the module to verify that it still works. Fortunately, NASA has approved flight of this identical unit with minimal paperwork, so we are asking to be on the manifest for supply mission 71P (a Progress spacecraft). Launch currently is scheduled for 31 October, with docking on 2 November. Installation will depend on the crew’s busy schedule, but we expect packet will be operational again by the end of November 2018. Dave, W8AAS

Downloading telemetry from CAS-4A and/or B

Hi all I just bought these two antennas and I want to use them without the phaser for circular polarization. I want to use a switch for H and V in the mast, the idea is to use it for terrestrial & satellite with vertical rotor. I also wanted to know if routing the two coaxial cables along the boom until the horizontal crossbeam can affect the radiation diagram etc. I have consulted with the guys from M2 and they advise to route the coaxial cables towards the end of the boom and leave them hanging, but that makes the installation very complicated and will cause the boom to go awry. They also tell me about the possibility that VSWR does not match in UHF due to the phasing cables. Have any of you made similar changes with M2 antennas? This is the email exchanged with them Hello Jose, If you route the feedlines down the boom, the gain, pattern and VSWR will be degraded. No metal can run parallel to the elements. We recommend our L-brace kit, http://www.m2inc.com/FGLBKAM so that your coax is not hanging. One L-brace kit is required per antenna. Additionally, if you remove all of the phasing cables, the VSWR may not match the original settings (especially for 70cm). The antenna elements are tuned specifically to counteract any interaction with the phasing cables. You may (or may not) be able to achieve a reasonable match when converted to V/H linear polarity. We have not done any engineering/testing in this configuration. USB driver for Windows 7, 64-bit, for IC-9100

Hello, A friend of mine needs to steer the IC-9100 by SatPC32I/SatPC32ISS via the radio's USB port for a coming ISS school contact. He is using a Laptop with Windows 7, 64-bit. As he told me the generated virtual COM ports are marked with a yellow exclmation sign (which indicates a driver problem) and he gets the error message that a USB device could not be recognized. Does somebody successfully steer the IC-9100 via one ot the USB ports under Windows 7, 64bit? If so, what driver are you using (dirver name, download link)? As far as I see (I don't have an IC-9100) the driver name could be CD-301501-004.zip and the link: https://www.icom.co.jp/world/support/download/firm/IC-7600/usb1_30/ Can both USB ports be used for CAT control or only one of them? I recently purchased a EMOTATOR elevation rotator with an indicator problem. The little o ring that the motor drives the plastic pulley is bad. I maybe able to pickup something at the hardware store but would like to have the original part if possible. Does anyone stateside support these? Thanks Mike

9100 PAT with satellites

Has anyone got the PATed 9100 displaying a useful panadapter on the satellites? I’m getting sort of, useful signals on HF and repeaters. I’ve been tweaking my SDRPlay setup here for several days and just barely see anything on the visual display. Now I’m comparing this to my Flex VU5K which has an excellent panadapter display. I’m thinking maybe where I mounted the PAT board, it might be getting desenced, or the my old SDRPlay ver 1 could be replaced with a newer version, or better hardware. Anyone getting better results? If so your setup please… I could send pictures of what I’m seeing with the 9100 and what the VU5K is capable of to demonstrate my issue. 73 Jeff kb2m

Bill has been granting applicants who qualify OSCAR numbers for over two decades since the late-1990’s. Even Bill cannot remember the first number he issued, but believes it was either TO-31 or SO-35. In any case, he has issued at least 57 OSCAR numbers. This is over 60%, or very close to two-thirds, of all the OSCAR numbers issued. I want to thank Bill for his many dedicated years of service to AMSAT. However OSCAR numbers are a proud tradition of amateur radio, one that we hope to keep going for many years to come. Transmissions are scheduled to begin at 16:00 UTC on July 30, then powered down at 19:30 UTC. The next day (July 31), the system will be active from 13:25-19:15 UTC. Downlink should be on the traditional 145.80 MHz frequency and the operating mode will likely be PD120. When this event becomes active, SSTV images are downlinked from the International Space Station (ISS) at the frequency of 145.80 MHz and can be received using ham radio equipment as simple as a 2 meter handheld radio or a common scanner receiver the covers the 2 meter ham band. After connecting the audio output of the radio receiver into the audio input of a computer running free software such as MMSSTV, the SSTV images can be displayed. The two organ- isations are currently involved in propagation research on 5 MHz, and a study of the rapid increases in the radio frequency noise floor, its causes and possible mitigation, and the possible slowing down of the noise pollution which will ultimately render the radio spectrum useless for communication, particularly for weak signal communication. NASA on the Air - NASA 60th Anniversary

This week the Johnson Space Center Club is on the air as part of the NASA on the Air (NOTA) year-long special event. We are currently one of 12 NASA club stations participating in the event. Throughout the year, we will be continuously operating in celebration of a variety of significant NASA milestones. For July, we will be operating to commemorate the 60th anniversary of President Dwight D Eisenhower's July 29th, 1958, signing of the Space Act which established the creation of NASA. During this week, the JSCARC will be heavily operating on 10/15/20/40/80 m bands and also satellites. A commemorative 1958 vacuum tube vintage station will be activated consisting of a Johnson Ranger/Courier and a Hammarlund HQ145C, courtesy of one of our members, K5RG. This station will be used to make CW, SSB, and AM QSOs. In addition, our other shack radios will sue SSB, FT8, FM, CW, and SSTV to make contacts on all bands. A special 60th Anniversary QSL card (designed by AB5SS) will be available with an SASE for contacts made. A QSL card can be received only if you send an SASE to our address listed on our website (w5rrr.org), or QRZ.com. There will be a special certificate issued for top stations that work modes and bands across the NOTA NASA centers. Sorry for sending this to the group but I can't figure out what the email address is of individual who had questions re portable masts. I'm sorry to hear of your troubles contacting Go Vertical USA. I've had no issues contacting them, ordering things from them and getting the orders shipped to Canada. I have purchased all most all of my mast sections locally in VE7land but Go Vertical USA does have some nice accessories that make things work much better in my experience. After that pass of SO-50 and AO-91 over CN87 I found my recorder was malfunctioning. Does anyone have a tape of the AO-91 overpass? I have W7QL at 7/25 @ 2106 UTC. I would really appreciate it. Hi Paul, Check out this listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/24-FOOT-FIBERGLASS-ANTENNA-TOWER-MAST-SECTIONS-POL… These are excellent for portable and even permanent. They are mil spec so they will last a lifetime. Look at all the listings because prices are all over the map. Choose ones with free shipping. You may even find a set with an olive drab vinyl carrying bag. I even have a trailer hitch from Harbor Freight that has a piece of muffler pipe welded to it and it fits the fiberglass pole perfectly. You can put up 4-5 pieces and it does not move. On my permanent masts, I glue the pieces with Gorilla glue and paint them to protect from UV sun. Also, for the linux version at least, when you install it asks you if you want to install specific spacecraft (I usually say yes to all of them, including the ones that aren't in space yet). I'm sure there is a way to add them after the fact, but never done it. Decoding telemetry data

I am interested in downloading and decoding telemetry data from various satellites. The Fox satellites are easy, I can receive and decode them perfectly. I would like information on how to find software to decode the various protocols such as 1k2, 4k2, 9k2 BPSK and 9k6/19k2 GMSK etc. I have beams suitable for EME on 144 and 432 so receiving the satellites is no problem. Trip To AK BP64

SAT Gridders, I'm taking a "Bucket List" Trip to Alaska next week to check off a few items. Going to Fairbanks from 8/2 through 8/8 and taking my regular Rover Gear - IC820H & Arrow w/tripod. Plan is to activate BP64 and a couple nearby Grids - holiday style. That means I'll pop up on various Satellites with no strict schedule other than a Twitter Message with a few hours notice. LoTW upload upon return. Items to be checked off are: 1) 43rd State visited - AK; 2) Arctic Circle; 3) Denali Visit; 4) 112th Grid activated and hopefully more; 5) Northern Lights - KYFC; 6) Almost Midnight Sun 73,. I have know this has been answered, but, what is the best dual band mag mount type antenna for mobile satellite work? 1/4 w 2 meter that will also work 435, or a longer 5/8 2m dual band? I saw a post 2 months ago, but, didnt save it. It may not be the best setup, but it beats not roving at all. An International Space Station school contact has been planned the ISS R&D Conference in San Francisco, CA with participating students of Quest Institute for Quality Education in San Jose, CA on 26 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 20:22 UTC. It is recommended that you start listening approximately 10 minutes before this time. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and VK5ZAI. The contact should be audible over Australia and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Valley Christian Schools is committed to a Quest for ExcellenceT in all of its educational programs and provides a comprehensive kindergarten through twelfth grade curriculum with a rigorous college preparatory program and challenges youth to aspire toward lives of character, service and influence while pursuing their individual Quests for Excellence. Since 2011, The Quest Institute ISS Partner Program has successfully trained over 700 students from more than 20 schools, both public and private, from the United States and abroad. Accolades have come from four US presidents, multiple senators, actor Tom Hanks, and four US NASA astronauts. Students have presented their scientific results at the Cal Poly Space Conference, ASGSR, and at Lockheed Martin.
