Yaesu g5400B longevity in stroage

I acquired a G5400 az/el rotator that looks to be in pristine condition, apart from some rubber rot. I don't think it's ever been mounted outside in the weather. As of Friday, July 6 Slow Scan TV is still being transmitted from the International Space Station on 145.800 MHz FM. KENWOOD TM-V71A

I Peter, I have used the TM-V71A as portable with my ARROW II, works, great for SATs. also have one as base station and mobile. and use it for terrestrial packet. it puts out a fixed level voltage frm the dataport for packet so be sure if you use with a TNC it will operate at the levels of the radio.(9600 bd). its a great easy-to-program on-the-fly radio. 73 Christy KB6LTY

Hello All, Is anyone using the Kenwood TM-V71A for Satellite work? I am looking for a portable station for field operations and, looking at the spec’s this radio seems to fit the bill. TS-2000 packet setup

I am new to TS-2000 and have forgotten almost all I ever knew about packet. I am currently trying to set up UISS and UZ7HO apps. I have these working on the IC-7100. On the TS-2000, when I plug the 13 pin plug into acc 2, the rig no longer puts out audio. If I remove the plug, speaker audio returns. What am I missing? I would also like to hear from anyone successfully using packet on the TS-2000 - either with built-in TNC or software TNC. Thanks, Butch K8KO

If you can swing a little extra, consider getting the TM-D710G. It will allow operation on the APRS satellites (currently NO-84 and FS-3, but soon - hopefully, also PSAT-2 and Birds-2). I use a D710 as my "home base", and love it. Nice being able to crank it up to 50 watts to get sub 10° contacts THROUGH TREES in my backyard (got one yesterday with K2MTS, and the sat was at about 5° though my ash trees in my backyard). Normally I operate at 10w, which is more than enough to get all the FM voice sats, including AO-85, without having to do any "arrow flipping". Happy 4th everyone. My XYL ordered me a Yaesu FT2DR for my birthday. Apparently, all of the whining I've been doing pertaining to not being able to work the 9600 baud APRS gave her an idea for me. InstantTrack or similar usable on Win 10

I was wanting to describe to some folks I am doing a satellite demonstration for next week, about how some satellites have stable sun-synchronous orbits while others process earlier each day. The old DOS program, InstantTrack, that most likely will not work under the Windows 10/64 bit world had a nice display of this behavior, Are there any recommendations for a more modern application that will do the same type of thing? If you are not familiar with what I am talking about, look at page SO-3 in the current "Getting Started." book from AMSAT (As well as on earlier pages) to see what I am looking for. A web search shows that it should be in the AMSAT software archives but the page link for that particular software is broken. working packet sats

I have played with no-84 psat digi , i seem to hit it sometimes but really hard to hear it. and NEVER decode my packets repeated...seems like it digi's so fast i dont recover fast enough to hear them,,, perhaps ssb 2m preamp relay delay is a factor? do i need to hard wire the preamp relay to the rig ( ts2000) to over this delay ?thxbrad ko6kL please delete the old text below your answer ....

About fireworks: during first ARISS contact in mission Horizon, last week, Gerst was asked about fireworks at 31.12 (question #6). A German friend transladed for me: Alex never went on ISS during last eve night, but when he flies over Italy in summer he can see fireworks in touristic areas. Hello, your is an enormous work. I'm a teacher, I had two ariss contacts and I really love this program. Have mentors considered to ask schools to give ARISS a file with the answers? Every school have a registration and if any coordinatinating teacher does this work, it could be posted on ARISS website to share. I'm here if you ask me I'll send mine. Thank you for what you do! Unlike most of the other numbers in the Keps, the orbit count has nothing to do with predicting the orbit, and can be completely ignored. Some programs do that. Others compute backwards and forwards from the reference epoch and orbit number in the Keps they are using. I am most familiar with SatPC32, and when working on prelaunch Keps recently, I found that if you ran it backwards in time before the launch, it will happily show negative numbers. ;) The problem is that when the specification for the Keps we use was created, it only allowed 5 digits for the orbit count. That seemed enough, and comes from Space Track that way. So like an odometer it just rolls over. In principle, software could look for that, and automatically compensate. Hi everyone has anybody had any experience or knowledge of this companies SATPACK1 consisting of a double loop for 2 and another for 70 on a boom, I could get this array up to about 45 feet if that helps, it seems a bit pricey but if it works it works. When our club conducted a ARISS contact for a local middle school we had a problem with the main station on the yagi at the very last instant. We switched to the secondary station with the M2 eggbeater and we made the contact with no problem. Hi, The 1st FREE OF COST International Balloon ‘Satellite’ Launch CHALLENGE is open across the Globe for participants below 21 years of age. Leveraging the power of technology, the State of Rajasthan in India has become the “Digitalization Hub of India”. In the upcoming three-day technology carnival by the Government of Rajasthan- “Rajasthan Digifest 2018”, held at Jaipur (known as the Pink city of the world) there will be a plethora of opportunities for everyone. Help for "Moon Day"

I am looking to recruit additional volunteers from the AMSAT community in North Texas, Central Texas or elsewhere, to help promote "Amateur Radio in Space" to a large public STEM event. "Moon Day" at the Frontiers of Flight Museum at Love Field in Dallas Texas on July 21, 2018 is the largest space themed STEM event in Texas. Last year saw 1500 people attend the 6 hour event. https://www.flightmuseum.com/moon-day/ Again this year, I am heading an exhibit and satellite demos for AMSAT. We have a table inside the Museum, (Alongside the Dallas Amateur Radio Club Table), and a demonstration area outside. I will be setting up the outside activities and hope to work as many satellite passes as possible during the 10A-4P run of the show. I am looking for AMSAT people to both help with the inside table and also with the outside demonstrations. Joe Spier has promised me that he will send me the FOX "Engineering Model" but I am looking for additional demonstration aids to illustrate satellite orbits and other aspects of space communications like various types of antennas. Being a STEM event, there will be many young people in attendance, (General public as well as Boy and Girl Scouts), and they get a chance to earn a STEM patch by answering questions from exhibitors like US. Each year I do this, I am also surprised by ho many Hams I talk to at the event who are either inactive or have never experienced Amateur Satellites. We really need people and content for Moon Day so please consider spending Saturday, July 21 with us. Contact me off list for more information. SDR Recordings Requested for WMPLOTA

The WMPLOTA scoring minion (me) is looking for a few kind souls in the US to record and post SDR recordings for the XW-2D and XW-2F passes around 00:00 UTC on July 2. (This evening at 7 PM US Central Time). My limited understanding is that SDR software can record the entire transponder, and this can be played back to select and listen to QSOs on the various transponder frequencies. I am hoping to use these recordings to help determine the winner of the Early ‘Bird’ Award, for the first confirmed QSO nearest to 00:00 UTC at the start of the event. Ideally, the recordings would be from a station in more southern US latitudes as the satellites ascend from the south. I am also interested in an audio recording of SO-50 around 00:10 UTC as a fall-back, in the unusual circumstance that no confirmed WMPLOTA QSOs happen on the two XW birds. New FAQ "How do I program the Kenwood TH-D72A for satellites"

I added a new FAQ to the sats wiki after I ran across the question twice in one day. http://sats.wikidot.com/how-do-i-program-the-kenwood-th-d72a-for-satellites First enable both the A and B bands by pressing DUAL (0 key). While the B band is selected enable full duplex using F -> DUP (0 key as well). DUP should be displayed at the top of the LCD screen. The Kenwood TH-D72A won't store cross-band split memories. I use the VFO instead. I store one memory each for the downlink and uplink (labeled "SO-50 DN" and "SO-50 UP" respectively) and transfer the downlink to the A band and the uplink to the B band using the F -> VFO key sequence. To adjust for doppler on SO-50 I have to switch from the B band (uplink/tx side) to the A band and then adjust the frequency, and then switch back to the A band to TX again. With the Fox birds (AO-85, AO-91, AO-92) you mostly only have to compensate for doppler on the uplink so you don't have to flip around from one band to the other as much. Alternatively you could program all the doppler corrected frequencies in memory and just use memories, but you still won't be able to do split operation and at least for SO-50 you'll have to switch back and forth between bands through the pass. This is my first stab at it and if anyone wants to add more or edit it for clarity/etc. let me know and I will give you access to the wiki so you can do it. 73, John Brier KG4AKV

I got VUCC!

I haven't uploaded anywhere close to all my satellite contacts to Logbook of The World, but I uploaded enough to get 100 grids as of yesterday when WW8W confirmed our contact from 2018-06-17 on AO-91. He was in EN73. Thanks to everyone else who worked me. Clayton W5PFG got me the most grids at seven, and Gabe AL6D got me five, using almost as many callsigns! Yaesu G-5400B Followup to Problem

Once again, thanks to everyone who sent me links, suggestions and manual copies. It actually was an easy fix. I brought everything in to the bench and opened up the EL rotor to find what appeared to be some very poor solder joints on the wire side of the terminal strip. WX I guess over about 25 years had done a number on these joints. I resoldered them and hooked up a short pigtail to the rotor and voila...full rotation up and down!! I've also looked carefully at the AZ rotor and using the same pigtail check it out and all is still well with it. TNX again for your help and I may now be able to work a few birds from my summer QTH in FN21. 73 Rick, W2JAZ

Problem getting SDR-RADIO RTLUSB to work

Hi all, I recently had a hard drive crash in my laptop and have been in the process of re-installing everything. I thought I had re-installed SDR-RADIO V2 RTL-USB (I used the 20130209 version) for 64 bit correctly but when I go to run SDRConsole (V2) I get the following error message: SDRConsole.exe - Ordinal Not Found The ordinal 14056 could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program Files\SDR-RADIO-PRO.com\SDRConsole.exe. The program used to run just fine until I had to rebuild everything. Does anyone know what the fix might be? I am running Windows 10 Pro with an Intel i5-4210U CPU 1,70GHz 2.40GHz, 64 bit, with 8GB of RAM installed. I am wondering if I am missing something that didn't get installed when the new Windows was installed on the laptop. I was able to get HDSDR and SDRSharp to install and both work just fine. I have made numerous AO-85, 91, 92, and SO-50 contacts from my truck, mostly while stationary due to the desire to log the contacts, with a 25 year old Kenwood TM-733a (~25 watts) and a dual-band antenna on the roof of the truck. Even a simple 2m quarter-wave works fine and offers a decent match on 435 MHz. The feature that helps the most is the radio's full duplex capability. I thought I had found the problem with my old 5400 EL rotor when I discovered shorted wires at the terminal due to those awful old screw type terminals. Unfortunately after installing it the summer QTH I found that EL rotation worked only in one direction. I could use some help trouble shooting this as it could be in the control box or at the rotor and I have no manual with me. It could be that I'm off the air this summer in terms of satellite operation. 73 Rick, W2JAZ

EL84 next weekend, sats and 6m

One week from today, Robert KE4AL, Rich N4ESS, and myself, NJ4Y will be on Garden Key, EL84np in the Dry Tortugas. Robert and I will be active on all amateur satellites, while Rich will be operating HF CW for the grid chase. I will also be on 6m FT8, SBB and CW for as long as my batteries hold up. We will be arriving on the island mid-day on Friday July 6, staying all day Saturday, and then leaving Sunday morning July 8. We will be using the callsign K4R, and all logs will be uploaded to LOTW after the trip. Paper cards will be available on request via NJ4Y. The K4R QRZ page is up to date with our info, as well as k4r2018.com. We will also be able to tweet via a satellite messenger from the island, to our public twitter account at twitter.com/k4r_EL84. Weather sat imaging

To get images from NOAA weather satellites I have been using an RTL-SDR with SDR# software and the WxtoImg decoding program. This has worked successfully for a couple of years. I use the VB virtual audio cable to connect SDR# to WxtoImg. But about a month ago I had to reinstall SDR# as it wasn't working. I think it may have been due to an update in Windows 10. So, SDR# is working fine, but since the reinstall of SDR# I can no longer get viewable images in WxtoImg. The pictures look they have been through the shredder. I tried the slant correction and the resync as described in the Help section, but it didn't fix anything. It looks like a sync problem, but if the resync doesn't fix it, I'm not sure what to try next. I know these aren't amateur radio satellites, but I'm hoping there's at least a few of you out there who are downloading weather satellite pictures and can help me out. All reasonable suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. Steve AI9IN

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Pearl Technology STEM Academy, Peoria Heights, IL on 02 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:35 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and W9DWJ The contact should be audible over the state of Illnois and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Pearl Technology/Richwoods Township STEM Academy is a joint effort involving central Illinois organizations collaborating to educate local middle school students interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Together with Richwoods Township and the University of Illinois Extension, Pearl Technology helped found the first STEM Academy in 2016. Richwoods Township wanted to start a STEM Academy for local students in the Peoria Heights, IL area. The University of Illinois Extension has a strong history of running successful STEM Camps, and Pearl Technology provides the funding and technology for the annual STEM Academy. During the 2018 STEM Academy, held June 18-22, students built Raspberry Pi devices programmed to stream live video from the International Space Station and show the location of the ISS in its orbit. Students also took part in a high-altitude balloon launch and tracked it using APRS on amateur radio. Caterpillar engineers set up a virtual reality Mars environment and spoke to the students regarding NASA's 3-D Printed Habitat Challenge and Caterpillar's participation in the Challenge. The Challenge is designed to advance the construction technology needed to create sustainable housing solutions for the moon and Mars, using 3-D printing with materials found there. Students also learned about amateur radio, listened to the Dean of Engineering at Bradley University speak about STEM education, and talked with the Vice President of the Peoria Riverfront Museum about life on the ISS. Hi Remco. That is a really nice solution for a S/X transverter. I guess the LO module is some sort of eval board and works somewhere near 1968MHz on TX. Working simplex removes any problem of desense to the 10GHz downlink but I wonder if there is an issue where you are unable to hear the 'Leila' signal if it decides to transmit on top of you? Hope to work you later this year. I see there are a few unofficial sources saying 'August 18'......Although there are an equal number still saying 2016.........I guess we just wait. 73 David G0MRF I built my second Es'hail-2 transverter with easy available building blocks and junk box / flea market components. I consider the future (narrow band) transponder as a 'normal' amateur band (with latency) and therefore will operate 'simplex'. This means the LO frequencies are switched by the PTT (TX-enable). IC-910h preamp power and inline coax switch.

I am getting up to speed on working NO-84 with my TH-D72a. My primary antenna system and radio is IC-910h with the Icom Preamp installed near the antenna. The 910 powers the preamp through the coax, and I tend to leave the preamp on selection on the radio on all the time. I want to put a MFJ1702C coax switch inline with the 2m side so I can branch out the 2m antenna to my HT. The non selected port of the coax switch is grounded. If you accidentally ground the IC-910's coax with the preamp selected on, does it damage the preamp power circuit or is it tolerant of a short? I could not find a definitive answer in the manual other than the preamp may not activate properly. I know it wont power up the preamp. Inevitably, if I have to rely on remembering to turn off the preamp before I switch to the HT to work NO-84, I will forget. Just want to prevent burning something up. Thanks for any suggestions. The great thing is that the USB – UIRT is totally plug-and-play once you download the drivers from the USB – UIRT website. There is no programming or software involved with the gizmo. My web page has the link to the gizmo...and shows how to set up PstRotator to work with it. This worked flawlessly for me for the 11-12 months that I used it before upgrading to the M2 LEO PACK antennas and the Yaesu G-5500 az el rotator. Good afternoon satellite chasers! I will be operating vacation style from FM25 and FM26 June 29 through July 6. My primarily QTH will be FM25, where I plan to be on a fair number of FM and linear passes throughout the week. I will be operating from FM26 during Walmart Parking Lots on the Air from Walmart #2000! A club member from W6SD asked me if I could come to their FD site in Granada Hills CA to do the satellite contact for them. I said I would do it. I had planned ahead, figured out a list of the better passes of the FM sats and FO-29. Got set up and tried SO-50. We were fortunate. It was coming in from the south and the footprint didn't reach a lot of land yet. I heard WD9EWK on there and figured, "If anyone can work us through all of this, he can!" And he did. Well done. I had a small group around me as I did this. N7JY was holding the Elk and his Android tablet, watching the sat path and doing the aiming. I posted a picture on Twitter @ad7db. Few of the group actually heard the live exchange come back, but I did. I always record the pass, so, after we got the contact, I turned off the radio and played it back for them. It took a couple of plays to convince them, yes, we got the contact. "There he is coming back to us, right... there!" The next day I visited another group's FD site. I was dismayed to find they'd made lots of satellite contacts, even doing a couple on a final pass before the QRT call. What happened with the "one and done" rule? "7.3.7.1 - Stations are limited to one (1) completed QSO on any single channel FM satellite." Dave AD7DB

David - For a computer application (HamRadio Deluxe) to have “remote control” of another device ... it requires a communication path (using standards like serial, RS-232 or RS-422, for distance) and an intelligence (u-Processor) within device to interpret the communications and perform desired actions. — The Channel Master 9521(A) TV antenna rotator is a simple 50+ year 3-wire motor control design, updated in past decade with “Bling” (7-segment display and IR control) controller using a u-processor, to appear “modern” to non-STEM consumers. https://support.channelmaster.com/hc/en-us/articles/200382985-Rotator-Syste… In addition, there is No True BRAKE in these inexpensive designs (reason CDE created the Ham-series of azimuth rotators in 1957) The designs are virtually the same as early 1950s TV rotators in post-WW2 America. Why is that an important? NO positive feedback between actual direction of outside rotator and inside control box (subject to mis-alignments). One of the points made was that nowdays, working the FM birds is relatively easy, and to give relief to the crowded FM birds, we need more linear sat ops. How about giving 25 points for the FM contact, but 100 for a linear contact. You could do one or the other, not both.We are joking if we deny FD isn't about points. You want the big points, you earn them. Yaesu G-5500 setup

I have no operating experience with satellites. I am installing this G-5500 az-el rotator on a satellite ground station and I am using SatPC32 tracking software and an ERC interface. Everything is operational, so far... I am trying to decide whether to use 0 to 360 degrees or 0 to 420 degrees on the azimuth rotator. The station is located in Eastern TN, USA. The 0 to 420 uses all available rotation but then the meter readings are not as useful. Are there any preferences on this? From a practical, operating point of view, should the azimuth mid point or home position have the antenna pointed North or South? Or some other direction? Thanks for your input. Butch K8KO

I will be active on the Sats from the French island of Miquelon from 3 July through 17 July as FP/KV1J. This will be my 12th trip to the island. I mostly operate the low bands and 6 meters. When the WX is good, I try to get outside and work the linear birds. Occasionally I will also be on the FM birds. I use a pair of FT-817s and an Arrow antenna. Most of the time I will be grid GN17. M2, AMSAT and field Day

To the Folks at M2 Antenna Systems and the AMSAT Hierarchy. I ordered a Leo Pack from the AMSAT Booth,(Thank You for the Support), while at the Dayton / Xenia Ham Fest. It show up, at my home, about 2 weeks later. I built the array, in about 6 hours or so, the antennas went together really well. Then took another 8 hours or so to get my Field Day setup built, in the garage, Rotators and tripod. With a Comet Analyzer I swept each antenna assembly and found the to be exactly where they needed to be for LEO work. A week later I set everything up for field day. (Pix attached). I wanted to let you and everyone else know just how impressive this system is. It was either an AO-91 or an AO-92 pass over the western side of California, about between 2 and 3:30 am I was able to hit the satellite, make a contact actually 2; 1 in CA another in AZ, from the airport located Elkhart Indiana. The elevation on the shown on the AZ controller(LVB Tracker) reflected 10 to 14 degrees and the airport is about elevation is about 780' asl. This was my first Field Day and my First, actual satellite operation. I have been an Enthusiast, since I rejoined the amateur radio community, and have had no real contacts, until Field Day. I can now refer to myself as an real satellite operator, Yeah! I appreciate the M2 folks support of the AMSAT group, and I appreciate the AMSAT folks in their efforts to keep Amateur Radio in Space alive. All the Best! KD9ERA

I consider the future (narrow band) transponder as a 'normal' amateur band (with latency) and therefore will operate 'simplex'. This means the LO frequencies are switched by the PTT (TX-enable). I don't know if there were any true 2-way APRS exchanges on FS-3 during Field Day, but I did download an FD-related BBS message from KB6LTY and on the following pass, my reply to her was uploaded to the satellite. That's not a QSO, but just wanted to mention it since not everyone sees the postings on FS-3's BBS. Can't post an image with this message, but here's a link if anyone would like to see what a BBS message on FS-3 looks like: http://www.qsl.net/k/k4kdr//images/kb6lty-msg.png As for regular APRS packets, I wasn't awake when W4LHS (COASTAL AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETY, Savannah, GA) was active via FS-3's packet digipeater, but my K4KDR-15 iGate heard them being digipeated. James, I don't take exception with anything you have said. I would rather operate linear SATs anyhow. What bothered me about FD and generally any day, very few if any of them are worked using CW. CW is easier to copy and I think SAT exchanges during FD or otherwise would be faster and more efficient. If I could wish for one thing, that would be it, everyone try making CW contacts via SAT! I handled satellite ops for K4LRG (Loudoun Amateur Radio Group, LARG). Nice hilltop location at Franklin Park in Purcelville VA,excellent coverage to the south and east, decent to the west, and some trees to the north. 1st QSO was VE3YRA on 1st Ukube-1 pass, last a Brazil station on AO-7 just before 1800 UTC. About 135 QSOs before I remove AMSAT dupes. This is about double what we did last year; very happy about it. I'd like to give kudos to folks who stood out in my mind over the weekend: - The ops at W5RRR (JSC club). QSOs on 7 birds, CAS-4A @ 1539 6/24 UTC was VERY SPECIAL. A young man who is very interested in ham radio at the mike. You were his 1st satellite QSO, and he was double excited when I told him where you were. You made this kid's day! Thank you sirs. - K4BFT and VE3YRA - you guys were everywhere with solid signals. We worked BFT on 11 satellites (missed AO-7) and YRA on 10 (missed AO-7, AO-73). We worked several other stations with great signals on multiple satellite, these 2 stood out in my mind. - N8HM. Paul, how you do it with 2 817s (fully manual) and hand-held antenna continues to amaze. Thanks for the QSOs. - The ops on an early Sunday FM satellite pass (I forget which one). You were remarkably disciplined, even by FD standards. - The many ops who stayed with us to complete a QSO despite QRM, low elevation angles, jumpy AO-73 transponder, or insufficient caffeine in me on Sunday morning. My apologies to anyone I stepped on or became "that op." - Customer support at Yaesu in California. Murphy struck on Thursday; I broke a cross boom U-bolt on my rotator while getting ready. I called Yaesu; their customer service rep checked with their technician and they shipped a replacement to me. Which arrived Saturday! (I was worried it would not arrive in time and found a substitute locally that worked OK for FD). Excellent customer service. The number of satellites this year made for interesting times when one pass started while another was underway. We had QSOs on every CW/SSB or FM-capable satellite except AO-7 Mode A and AO-92. Weather was very wet (rained all day Friday and showers on Saturday) and a severe t-storm 1 hr after shutdown on Sunday (2 shelters damaged but no injuries thankfully!). All the satellite QSOs and Sunday gorgeous sunrise and morning made up for it. I still need to get digital modes working (can copy NO-84 and FS-3 but don't have uplink working) and build an L-band antenna for AO-92. Field Day

Well, this certainly was more fun than last year. I participated as W5SI with the Texas Emergency Amateur Communicators (TEAC) club in Kingwood, TX again this year. We doubled our satellite contacts from last year. Our station had an unobstructed view north and south. To the east, we were next to a building so zero visibility. To the west we were blocked the first 20 degrees or so. Had to wait for the highest passes. We started off field day working SO-50 and AO-91 on the first passes. Everything was done manually, radio tuning and LEO pack antenna turning. That makes it a little more fun as more people can be involved. Did not work a single station. By 4:00 PM I decided to head to the house. We had to have high elevation passes due to our location. When I returned an RV had moved along side the antennas. The antennas were moved another 20 feet away and had to place the radio in the back of my car as the coax was not long enough to reach where the radio was before. Next pass that was high for us was FO-29 in early evening around 8:30 PM. I have not worked an SSB satellite since 2001. Have been using the HT and mobile radio with the Arrow. But, heck it is like riding a bicycle. Found my downlink, cruised around and found W5RRR, my friend Andy, W5ACM, at the mic. We made a contact with them. Next good pass for us was SO-50 later in the evening around 10:30 PM. Unplugged the power and coax cables, closed up the car and went inside for some air conditioning. Time to work SO-50. A good 14 minute pass, we should make one contact, easy as pie. Hooked up the radio and started listening, nothing. Did not hear a peep (you can see where this is going?). Pass was about 90 degrees and still nothing. Someone looked down and said, the coax is not plugged in. Uh, huh, in my haste, forgot to plug them in. Quick which is 2m, which is 70cm. Hooked up and listening. Heard a familiar voice. Yes, last couple minutes of the pass, worked W5RRR with Andy once again at the mic. What are the chances? Out of all the stations on the air during field day, we wind up working not only someone else in the Houston area but the same station. Murphy tried to ruin our field day, but we got over on him. Those that were there to help and watch the satellite contacts enjoyed it and as I said, we did double our score from last year. We had 2 this year. Maybe next year will use Satpc32 for radio control and double this year's score. Be sure to get your scores into me. They are due by 11:59PM Central Time on July 9, 2018. A lot less time to submit than ARRL. Excellent condensation of what we were saying Greg, not to mention the additional concept of a net control getting extra points, as well as the need for training. Now--in a normal emergency net, a net control is pre-designated (I think). How do you think we could do that for FD while still being in the spirit of "practice for the real thing"? FM sats and FD

Well first of all the article that appeared in QST a little while back made it sound too darn easy, which yes it is, but not on field Day. The problem with Satellites and field day in my mind it relates to the way the rules are set up. Yes ARRL and AMSAT both stipulate that only one FM QSO per FM Satellite per field day station. The issue is in ARRL rules is that all Satellite contacts whether FM or SSB are seen as the same, then if somebody does hog the transponder trying to get multiple contacts on an FM bird, there is no way on the field day logging rules to throw those extra contacts out. On 91, I threw my call out twice made one contact and was gone. I spent most of my effort on linear satellites and ignored other FM passes. I do think you should look at this in a positive light. The growth in the number of amateur radio satellite has spurred a renewed interest in this aspect of a hobby and thus we have a potential easier time promoting AMSAT to more and more hams. Field day is a great place to do that because most of the people that come out are either already into amateur radio or new to the hobby and get excited about interest areas and that’s where AMSAT people need to get out of their house and to local clubs and field day set ups to do what we do will help to educate people and maybe save some of the bad behavior on the FM birds. I had my share of issues and problems this weekend, but I had fun and in ONLY six hours of operating beat my score from last year so that was a win. I also got to do some education too and that helps the future of our aspect of the hobby. 73. Tom. N5HYP

AMSAT change the satellite rules for FD!

Hi folks, Every year we have the same issue. Folks who want to collect their "100" points for the contest, folks who just want to operate on the satellites, folks who want to use FD for demonstration and education and all the above plus more. I have never understood why ARRL or whoever made FD a "competitive" thing. FD is so much more. If we (and AMSAT) take the satellites out of the equation (no more points), we can still have fun, educate, show off on FD and more. Yes, some satellites based on location, pass, time etc will always be congested, others will not. At least the pressure of getting the "100 points" is off and the non-pressure fun/hobby part gets back in the equation. Personally, I don't need "100" points at FD, I like have folks observing, learning and enjoying the hobby and test the equipment. That's my FD spirit. FD is about to get out, working with others, invite the community to see what we are doing, learn how our equipment works etc. Let's start an FD "transformation" and get rid of "points" for satellites :-) My 2 cents and honest opinion :-) 73, Stefan VE4NSA

Fresh install of ver. 12.8d on Win 10 Running for first time and doing the following: Enter lon & lat (in my case -84.3, 36.0) Register > enter data and password > get password is OK! Tap OK, program runs, Obs. (in lower left corner) reads -84.3/36.0 All looks good, do nothing else but quit. Run program again, get Obs. 8.9/51.9 … why? Did this several times with same results. Guys, guys, I didn't intend to start an argument, that was not my intent at all. Maybe "dismayed" wasn't the right term to use. My interpretation of the rules was "do one FM contact and that's all." The spirit of it was to help keep the satellite clear for others to make their contact. I thought the spirit of this was to also apply to the other sats to help reduce crowding on them, even though the rule didn't say so. As it happened, I was fortunate to get a good contact on the first sat we tried and then I got off of there. The guy at the other FD station had mentioned how many FM sat contacts he'd made during FD and I saw him make more. I didn't say anything, figured it was his choice. Besides, he had such a nice setup with three antennas and a rotator, and all of that for one contact? Why not make more and get on more passes. It just wasn't what I would have done. 73... Hi Group, Helping a fellow Ham setting up his radio to decode the DUV from the Fox birds. Has anyone had success using the Yaesu FT991A USB audio output into the Fox Telemetry decoder. Any setup details would be much appreciated. TNX Joe

Satellite audio on 145.500 FM, related to ISS

I read a thread on reddit amateurradio discussing whether an ISS downlink could be heard on 145.500: https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/8t9nsu/iss_repeater_active/ But I did not pay a lot of attention. Until this afternoon when I was in a park keeping an eye on my child while keeping an ear on some 2 meter frequencies with an HT. And indeed at some time 145.500 sprung to life with the kind of audio that I expect from satellite contacts (gridsquares, callsigns all in rapid succession). I checked Hamsatdroid and indeed an ISS pass was active. Signal reception was possible until a few seconds after LOS. Any ideas what's going on? Or what the uplink would be? It was good to hear actual contacts being made and not a 'zoo' like some of the other satellites on a Sunday afternoon.
