I see an amateur radio-equipped Geo bird over Central, South and North America as a phenomenal resource for the American Red Cross and others working disasters. It’s not in the traditional “easy sat” category, since it will take about $1000 for a decent ground station. So I cannot anticipate it being “overloaded” by newbies. An alternative would be to launch a cubesat style satellite to GTO and raise the perigee just enough to make the lifetime comply with the debris mitigation rules. After 15 years or so it burns up at perigee. With an orbit from 35,000km down to 800km, a linear transponder could be used with current phone technology (SSB) during the lower part of the orbit. At higher altitudes where the limited link budget, say 4W, is insufficient for the typical SSB + LEO pack, operators could use digital comms (think of another mode being added to WSJT-X) to overcome the path loss. It would inspire some to improve their standard antennas and preamps so they can extend the range of CW/SSB QSOs up a sat altitude of around 10,000km. If each picks up a million dollar ticket, with matching grants, 10 M USD isnt a big deal. It is also big business for them. Yaesu G-5500/ GS-232B issue

Dear All, I struggled with my rotor for about a month to get it pointing well to LEO’s and finally discovered today that the 4 screws to the AZ/Ele meters in the G-5500 were loose and doing intermittent electrical path, most probably due to temperature change over the 6-8 years I am using it After tightening these and recalibrating all is OK. Current ARISSoperations include voice repeater transmissions with the JVC Kenwood D710GA inthe Columbus module and APRS packet operation from an identical radio in theService Module (Zvezda). Packetoperations are on 145.825 MHz. The ARISS Russia and USAteams have been working for several weeks to prepare the Service Module radiofor APRS operations. ARISS Russia teammember Sergey Samburov, RV3DR, led the effort, working with Russian missioncontrollers and the on-board ISS cosmonauts to configure the Service Moduleradio for APRS ops. On August 11, finalcheckouts were completed and the APRS packet mode was switched on for amateurradio use. Perhaps not really from US sources as I would have liked. I decided to contribute my flight software and hardware designs to Open Research Institute and the repo will be available soon. My son came down with Covid last week so it slowed up things at my home and work. If anyone would like to replicate the EP firmware and hardware for Bricsat-p and Canyval-X and consider collaborating with me on improving its design for future amsat, the repo hosted by, and supported by ORI will be open to all. All hardware designs are still current. My commercial patent on the topic of synchronization of arrays of such thruster devices may be useful for those who want to build scalable (uN-s to mN-s, steerable) contraptions and they could contact GWU or myself for details. But with either of those systems the work by GSFC (Flight Dynamics treatments) show practical uses of gravity manifolds for deep space (non-GEO, cis-lunar) trajectories using the flight control system I developed. But as I was not the main developer of the actual thruster, one needs to include a thruster selection in the trade study process (PPT, MEVAT, Hall, uCAT, MEVA, ...) and use it in *pulsed* mode. For the adventurous, calculus wizardry will show benefit of store-idle-standby-run-fire modes of impulse burns quite a lot more efficiently than exoected. My lines are open. Rocket Lab's definition of "sensible cost" is $10 million. That is indeed a bargain price for a dedicated HEO mission. Do we think that AMSAT could raise that amount of money in a sensible amount of time? But I am also curious about the extent to which terrestrial HF signals can be heard well outside the bounds of the ionosphere. My guess is that if much of the long-distance terrestrial propagation we experience on HF is due to ionospheric absorption and re-radiation (i.e. setting ions in motion at an RF rate), then it might be much more transparent than we have been led to believe. I seem to recall a story about a Chinese satellite that traveled to the vicinity of the Moon and carried with it an HF receiver. A spectrum plot made by the satellite showed it was filled with HF signals originating from the Earth. 73 de John, KD2BD

Many of the other activities that amateurs engage in can be done in other personal radio services, but technical experimentation is, and should remain, limited to the amateur service." Today we can extend the phrase "other personal radio services" to include Internet and cellular services as well. So, what could we do in a geostationary orbit that won't simply be a duplication or an enhancement over what's already been done for decades? I think it would be neat to have the equivalent of a WebSDR in geostationary orbit to see exactly what can be received well beyond the Earth's ionosphere.
