Nothing should be in the way of the threaded bolt. The boom is empty unless you have the diplexer from them and that isn't long enough to go up to where the reflector is connected.
Probably the holes in the boom are just a little tight or the threaded bolt is a bit bent. Try and "screw" it in with some pressure. Maybe try another element/bolt. If it is brand new this is normal. In this case it's okay to force it. You can shine a light inside the holes and see nothing is inside the boom.
