Gerald,
I'll respond to the BB, since, this is... kinda good conversation for the BB. I have my RSPDuo hooked up to a broadband discone at roughly 20ft. I have an RSPDuo (and a couple other SDRs, funcube prov1.1, nooelect e4000 and a dvb-t stick), but I have dedicated the discone to this SDRduo. The SDRuno software it comes with is what I use. You can route the output (see RX settings) to any WME output device, which makes it uber easy to interface other devices with it, or you can write your own code to process the output, pipe it to the internet, etc... If you know c/c++, there's also an api you can use to control the RSP. This makes it easy to control the SDRPlay with Python / C#, etc... You can also easily interface the software with signalink USB. Oh, and the software is super easy to use, my two kids (9 and 11) can set the tuning frequency and tune around with it.
I will say, the SDRUno software does have some kinks to work out. The biggest annoyance to me is that I come and go from my home office regularly, and like to turn devices off or put them to sleep. When SDRUno is up and running and you put your machine to sleep, if you try to come back, it doesn't re-enumerate / connect to the device... You have to kill / restart it. Which is, kindof a pain. Also, the scanner is somewhat primitive and could use some more options.
Side note, you should also be able to download the RSP-spectrum analyzer, which is also neat.
You're welcome to contact me off the list anytime to discuss.
