The US crew was performing routine EVA battery charging yesterday in preparation for the EVAs to be performed during the next shuttle mission. I think that has gotten folks confused because of all the discussions on KEDR occurring around the same time.

Let me clarify this battery charging issue for ARISSAT. The crew has the capability to charge the battery onboard ISS. The battery is a Russian suit battery. That means they have a certified charger on board. The system was designed such that it's easy to remove the battery and charge it. From what we can tell they elected to not do that. We have very little knowledge as to what the status of ARISSat is. There has been no word from the Russians. If any of the ARISS or AMSAT team has word. It will be published as quickly and as widely as we can do it.

I agree completely with you and via OSCAR-10, OSCAR-13 and AO40 as well in HF when calling stations in South America I realized that for best understanding it was better to use geographical linguage instead of the ICAO phonetics and my call letters i8CVS becomes Italia Ocho Canada' Victoria Santiago or Italia Ocho Condensador Valvula Sintonia and with QRM,QSB and weak signals my call was better understud by people of espanish linguage.
By the way when calling stations in USA the ICAO phonetics Italy Eight Charlie Victor Sierra sounded better for me.

Basically, everyone is chasing their tail. That is, those who think that the ICAO phonetics are sacred and need to be used no matter what against those who believe that certain circumstances require using an alternative phonetic alphabet. Few persons are going to change their minds!
One needs to look at the public safety arena where the ICAO phonetics are just not used. If the ICAO phonetics are so great then why is there an APCO phonetic alphabet? The basic answer is that public safety organizations have found that the ICAO phonetics just don't do a good job. Therefore, the APCO phonetic alphabet.
I can assure you that this discussion will never end because those who insist that the ICAO phonetics must be used no matter what seldom realize that they are no panacea and that alternate phonetics do have a place in radio communications.

Not wanting to be a naysayer, but this was discussed a few weeks ago on Amsat-bb with the word from the mission staff that no external power connection was provided. In other words it runs on solar-charged batteries. Of course, we know they had some sort of "bench power connection" for testing. I hope the "folks" on the ISS are good technicians and can "rig up" something. There was a concern the batteries might drop off in storage until this summer when the "Main Show" is to happen.
Of course maybe they can "duck tape" it outside and let it run on the panels/batteries? OK that was in jest (humor).
I only have operational is a 2m Lindenblad CP omni directional antenna that is probably not good enough to hear ARISSat when down at the horizon and at max range. Just luck that my 2m-eme system is out of commission at present else I would had a excellent receiver.

Today's 3:30 EDT AO-51 pass was the first pass I have tried to work on a LEO in a long time (years). Blew the dust off the FT-530 and Arrow and sat out in the parking lot at work.
Was that pretty typical (i.e. quantity of stations) now for a mid-afternoon, weekday pass over the US? What about the very early morning passes?

I did not listen to the AO-51 pass you mention, but I would guess it was very crowded as is common. I will not comment on a guess but I will say that early morning passes are generally less crowded and "laid back". If you are up for the VERY early morning passes of SO-50...come join me, I'm often by myself.

Hi all.
I have a minor (probably operator error) with the TLM software.
Is there a way to get the audio to feed through to the PC speakers? I've tried Spectran and Spectraview without problem, but the ARISSat software does not appear to send audio out on my system. I cant hear the radio as I have a jack in the headphone socket which mutes the radio's speaker.
The software is working. I can decode the CW callsign and locator of a 2m beacon and the level is controlled nicely with the windows 'microphone' record level.
It's not muted It's got the correct input selected and the gain turned up.
But.....no audio out...so I'm just setting the frequency by visually putting the signal in the right place.
