I did. Despite my assumption it was the cap it in fact was not.
There's a strangle little spring that's part of the coupling between the motor and the first drive cog. Not sure why its there, but it had slipped out of position and was jamming the motor. I was tempted to leave it out (as it seemed it would work fine with out it), but put it back in any way and all is working fine. If it happens again I'll remove the spring for ever.
