
You can't tell reliably by just looking at the serial number. My FT-847 has an "old" serial number and originally had the unidirectional firmware, but when I sent it to Yaesu for servicing (early in its life) they updated the firmware to the bidirectional capability. Unfortunately, I am almost certain that they no longer offer that service.
