I guess that receiver could just about be a direct-conversion one, with good enough filtering.
I have a crate of old VHF and UHF PMR handies at work, with various "cosmetic" faults - broken channel selects, broken volume controls, or more seriously poor TX or poor RX. No-one takes me seriously when I suggest we match 'em up in pairs, stick a solar panel on it, put half a dozen in a rucksack and get them flown to the ISS. When one dies, get them to roll down the window and toss another over the side ;-)
