Because maybe they have invested years of their time into it, and don't want to see it all hacked up beyond recognition by the whims of a few hack-and-go programmers who play with it for a while, screw it all up and then move on to the fad of the next flashing icons
And why would you care if they do? It doesn't make the program work any less. You are under no obligation to accept their patches back into your source.
Let me turn my question around, then. What do you gain from keeping your source code a secret?
