[amsat-bb] Working the Transponder Sats

It has been suggested to me that I try the transponder sats. My question is what type of equipment would I need for this. I'm currently unable to run any type of mast mounted antenna(s) and would prefer it be portable or mobile if possible.

My current setup is an Icom W32-A handheld with an Elk antenna. Am I correct in my belief that I can't work the transponder sats with an FM radio?
